WEEK 6 READING: SURFACES THAT CAN BE BUILT FROM PAPER IN ARCHITECTURAL GEOMETRY Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description. 3 elementary types of developable surfaces are cylinders, cones, tangent surfaces of spaces curves. The reason why cylinders are the developable surfaces is that it is consisted of parallels. For the cones, it is briefly made up of one vertex and many straight lines originate from the top vertex. Then the tangent surfaces of space curve is the compositions of many planar quadrilateral faces.
Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion. Once the surface is developable, it means that it can be mapped in the plane. For the constructions purpose, designers have to consider the technical feasibility of turning the 2- dimensional design into physical construction. Therefore developable surfaces which can be unrolled is much easier for constructing, and designers can also use plenty of developable surface to create a complex geometry. For instance, the appearance of Greenhouse is very similar with the unrolled pattern in the Rhino and be made up of developable surfaces.

WEEK 7 READING: DIGITAL FABRICATION Complete your reading before attempting these questions:
Question 1: What is digital fabrication and how does it change the understanding of two dimensional representation? Comparing to the hand drawing design of the building, the digital fabrication can explore more possibilities of the construction since it is not only used to present the appearance and simple annotation of the design but also contains thousands of accurate data which can have the strong connection with the production. For example, when using Rhino to make a 3D model, models are built in a logical way, every connection with the points are recorded and can be changed easily which is suitable for the physical construction.
Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design? The first reason of the extensively usage of the folding is that it is a good way to extend the spaces, different ways of folding can create different space of the model, which can easily transfer the planar pattern into the 3-dimensional model. Second reason can be the flexibility of changing the tendency of the surface, the direction of folding can decide tendency and the number of the fold can decide the degree of the crook.
