a revista Ruta del Arte publica su undécima edición – una guía por la escena artística y una invitación a los interesados en el arte a visitar los estudios de artistas en Ibiza y Formentera.

he magazine Ruta del Arte brings out its eleventh edition –as always, an invitation to art lovers to visit artists’ studios in Ibiza and Formentera, and a guide to the art scene on the islands.

Producida localmente – distribuida globalmente: Artistas de todas partes del mundo, residentes en Ibiza, se unen para sacar a la luz una publicación, concebida, maquetada, impresa en Ibiza y al mismo tiempo accesible globalmente como App.

Locally produced – globally distributed: Artists from all over the world, resident in Ibiza, get together for a joint publication, conceived, laid out, printed in Ibiza at Can Imprès, but, on the other hand, available globally as an App.

Además de la versión impresa habrá una edición digital para el iPad esta vez. Ya hemos adaptado la edición de 2012 para experimentar. Desde enero se puede bajar del iTunes Store de Apple gratuitamente.

Yes, in addition to the printed version there will be a digital version for the iPad this time. We already adapted last year’s issue for a try which, since January, can be downloaded at Apple’s iTunes Store for free.

En esta occasión hemos tardado más de lo habitual hasta que suficientes participantes se han decidido finalmente a unirse al proyecto de la edición actual. Ha habido una marcada fluctuación entre los artistas, algunos salieron, otros entraron. Pero al final, aúna más artistas que nunca: por primera vez tocamos el triple dígito. Las portadas muestran una pintura reciente de Anthony Johnson, un díptico titulado The Gathering. [la reunión] que lleva al espectador a un mundo misterioso entre los tiempos, de poderes oscuros y un realismo mágico, poblado por arquetipos y brujas, lleno de indicios y alusiones. El título de las muestras al aire libre que ha organizado el Art Club desde hace 10 años se modificará a Luna Llena de Arte, ya que Aida Miró se encargará de la organización a partir de este verano. Tendrá lugar mensualmente de junio a septiembre en Sant Joan, Santa Gertrudis y Sant Josep.

Nevertheless, it took longer than in previous years until, finally, the required number of participants made up their mind and joined the project of this edition. There was remarkable fluctuation, some opted out, others newly joined. But, as a result, there are more participants than ever: we reached the triple digit for the first time. The cover shows a recent painting of Anthony Johnson, a diptych titled The Gathering, that leads the observer into a mysterious world between the times, of dark powers and magic realism, peopled by archetypes and witches, filled with hints and allusions. The name of the Art Club’s open air events that have taken place for 10 years will change to Luna Llena de Arte, as Aida Miró takes charge of the outdoor show this season. It will take place monthly from June to September in Sant Joan, Santa Gertrudis and Sant Josep.

Un artículo se dedica al ‘festival proactivo Bloop’ de arte urbano que este verano tendrá lugar por tercera vez. Su base será el antiguo faro Ses Coves Blanques en Sant Antoni, sin embargo los acontecimientos tendrán lugar en varios puntos de la isla.

A feature is dedicated to the ‘Proactive Bloop Street Art Festival’ which will take place for the third time this summer. Its home base will again be the old lighthouse Coves Blanques in Sant Antoni, but the events will take place in various locations all over the island.

El concurso de escultura Escultores en vivo en Dalt Vila, Eivissa, se ganó también una retrospectiva, ya que es uno de los pocos Chris von Gagern – editor acontecimientos que se centra en la escultura. ¡Ojalá que se repita en 2013!

Last year’s workshop and exhibition Escultores en vivo [Sculptors live] in Dalt Vila, Eivissa, also seemed worthy of a retrospective, especially as it is one of the few events focusing on sculpture in a long time and, hopefully, will be repeated this year.

Finalmente, incluimos un tributo a Bernd Flemming, pintor y miembro fundador del Art Club Ibiza que falleció el pasado 8 de diciembre en su estudio de Düsseldorf, Alemania. Una actualización de la foto de los fundadores del año 2000 parece apropiada en este contexto.

We also pay tribute to Bernd Flemming, painter and one of the Art Club’s founders, who deceased December 8 in his studio in Düsseldorf, Germany. An update of the founders’ photo from 2000 may be appropriate in this context.

l Palacio de Congresos de Ibiza se integra en un edificio singular inspirado en la arquitectura tradicional ibicenca y rodeado de un medio natural de alto valor que pone a su disposición unas instalaciones y equipamientos adecuados a la categoría de eventos que en él se desarrollan.

No solo se organizan congresos sino actividades culturales de gran prestigio y profesionalidad. Como ejemplo de ello podemos citar: el “Ballet de Moscú”, la retrospectiva a la galería “El Mensajero” o la exposición de la Asociación de Artistas Visuales de Islas Baleares (AAVIB) y la Ópera, que cada año, organiza Armin Heinemann.

Highlights have been so far, for instance, the Moscow Ballet, the retrospective on the gallery El Mensajero, the annual exhibition of the Association of Visual Artists of the Balearics (AAVIB) and various operas staged by Armin Heinemann.

l espacio cultural de Sa Punta des Molí consta de una sala de exposiciones, una almazara y un molino museizados, un auditorio y un jardín botánico. Se encuentra en un punto de gran valor etnológico y natural desde donde se domina la bahía de Portmany. El espacio conforma un lugar único y es el referente cultural del Poniente de la isla. A lo largo del año acoge todo tipo de instalaciones creativas y acontecimientos culturales: exposiciones, conciertos, festivales de cine, talleres, presentaciones de libros, espectáculos, teatro…

he cultural space Sa Punta des Molí comprises a showroom, an oil press and a windmill turnd into a museum, an auditorium and a botanical garden. It is situated in a place of great ethnological and natural value dominating the Portmany bay. The compound forms a unique location and is the cultural reference point for the West of the island. Over the year it hosts all kind of creative installations and cultural events: exhibitions, concerts, film festivals, workshops, book presentations, performances, theatre...

Far de ses Coves Blanques Sant Antoni de Portmany Carrer Alemanya, 2

l Far de ses Coves Blanques es el antiguo faro, ya en desuso, de Portmany, construido en 1887. Tras una restauración y adecuación, actualmente está dedicado a usos culturales. Es la sede del Centre d’Interpretació de la Mar, que tiene como fin el estudio, la investigación, la exposición y la promoción de temas marinos. Cada verano acoge la Universidad Internacional del Mar.

he Far ses Coves Blanques was formerly Portmany’s lighthouse, built in 1887 but out of order for years. After restauration and shaping up, it is now dedicated to cultural uses. It is the seat of the Centre for the interpretation of the Sea, whose task is the studying, putting on display and promoting marine matters. Each summer, it hosts the International University of the Sea.

Can Portmany

an Portmany es una de las mejores muestras de la arquitectura ibicenca de inspiración colonial, obra del arquitecto Joan Gómez Ripoll, Campos, que la construyó en 1933. El edificio tiene la consideración de Bien de Interés Cultural y actualmente es un espacio municipal que acoge distintos servicios y eventos de carácter social y cultural.

an Portmany is one of the best examples of Ibicencan colonial inspired architecture, designed by Joan Gómez Ripoll and built in 1933. The building is among the ones considered for declaring it a monument ‘of special cultural interest’. At the moment it is a location that hosts various services and events of a social and cultural character.

a galería de arte Can Jeroni fue inaugurada el 17 de diciembre de 2009 con el objetivo de difundir, dinamizar y fomentar las diferentes artes plásticas, creadas tanto en la isla de Ibiza como en el exterior.

he art gallery Can Jeroni was inaugurated December 17, 2009, with the aim of promoting the variety of visual arts created both on the island and abroad.

Can Jeroni se encuentra en el centro de Sant Josep, al lado de la iglesia y en el inicio del camino que lleva hasta sa Talaia. Sus instalaciones forman parte del antiguo cine de Can Jeroni, que durante años se mantuvo activo y que de nuevo recobra su vocación de centro de expansión cultural.

Can Jeroni is located in the centre of Sant Josep, not far from the church and at the beginning of the path to the Atalaya mountain. The building is part of the old cinema that was operating for many years. Now it recovers its vocation as a cultural centre.

En Can Jeroni se han realizado a lo largo de estos últimos años varias exposiciones que han dotado a esta galería de una merecida fama entre los artistas de la Isla.

Can Jeroni hosted a couple of shows over the last years that made its name among the artists of the island.

Sus instalaciones, llenas de luz y tranquilidad, ofrecen un espacio idóneo para disfrutar de la creación artística.

The rooms, brightly lit and quiet, offer a space that is ideal for looking at art.

Can Jeroni es actualmente la galería de arte de referencia en el municipio de Sant Josep con una programación encuadrada en el programa de acciones culturales que la Regidoria de Cultura realiza a lo largo del año.

At the moment, Can Jeroni is the showroom of reference in the municipality, with a program that fits the cultural action staged by the cultural department of Sant Josep.

Después de varias remodelaciones, Can Curt adquiere un aspecto moderno que se integra con la arquitectura tradicional de los edificios que la rodean. Su ubicación en la plaza de Sant Agustí, le proporciona una especial relevancia como núcleo de oferta cultural que de forma continuada ofrece la Regidoría de Cultura del municipio josepí.

After being remodelled various times, Can Curt obtained a modern look which integrates with the traditional architecture of the surrounding buildings. Its location on the plaza of Sant Agustí imparts a special relevance as a nucleus of cultural events that the department of culture of Sant Josep is constantly promoting.

Desde su inauguración han sido muchísimos artistas quienes nos han ofrecido diferentes muestras de su trabajo. Can Curt ofrece la posibilidad de que artistas consagrados o no, puedan mostrar su trabajo a quienes decidan disfrutar de la calma y el relajado ambiente que ofrece Sant Agustí.

Since its opening, countless artists have showcased their work. Can Curt offers the possibility to artists –be they renown or not– to show their work to visitors that enjoy the calm and relaxed atmosphere of Sant Agustí.

Para el presente año hay programadas exposiciones diferentes casi cada semana, reservando las fiestas de Sant Agustí, en agosto, para las exposiciones más tradicionales y especiales. En esta ocasión se prepara un gran homenaje a Vicent Trull, el fotógrafo del pueblo, que nos dejó ya hace un año.

For this season, different exhibitions are scheduled almost every week, except for the celebration of Sant Agustí’s patron saint in August when the more traditional and unique shows will be on. For that occasion, a tribute to the late photographer of the people, Vicent Trull, is in preparation.

l Club Diario de Ibiza nació en abril de 1993. Los ibicencos han encontrado en él un foro para el diálogo. Un club abierto y plural que no ha parado de crecer desde sus inicios. El Club organiza más de cien actos anuales y congrega a más de 11.000 visitantes cada temporada. En la actualidad, se ha constituido en una referencia esencial en la vida social y cultural.

At present, the Club organizes more than a hundred events per year and attracts more than 11.000 visitors each season. It has become an essential reference point for social and cultural life.

Durante los últimos años, el Club, inicialmente más centrado en ofrecer conferencias y debates ha vivido una diversificación de las actividades. Así, el foro del periódico lleva a cabo numerosos ciclos de cine, conciertos, obras de teatro, espectáculos de baile y exposiciones de arte que le convierten en un auténtico dinamizador de la vida social y cultural de la isla.

Initially more centered in offering conferences and debates, the Club recently diversified considerably its activities. Thus, the platform iniciated by the newspaper hosts movies, concerts, theatre plays, dance events and art exhibitions, converting it into a dynamic element within the social and cultural life of the island.

An art fair in the open

n 2003 el Art Club, y en particular Sola, su actual presidenta, iniciaba una exhibición mensual en la que los artistas visuales podían exponer sus obras de manera informal. Escultores, pintores y fotógrafos montan una muestra al aire libre que supone una panorámica artística de la isla.

n 2003, the Art Club, and in particular its actual president, Sola, initiated a monthly forum for artists to display their work for an evening in an informal way. Painters, sculptors, photographers put on an outdoor show that makes for a rich cross section of what’s being created on the island.

Al comienzo tenía lugar exclusivamente en los jardines de Las Dalias bajo el nombre Noche del Arte. A partir de 2008 se celebra en lugares alternos bajo el título Domingo del Arte. Santa Eulària y sus varios municipios fueron su primer anfitrión, desde entonces el acontecimiento se ha celebrado también en Sant Josep, Eivissa y Sant Antoni.

At the beginning it used to be called Noche del Arte and took place exclusively at Las Dalias. Since 2008 its location is different every month during the season. It first ventured out to Santa Eulària and its various villages, and then it spread to Sant Josep, caught on in Eivissa, and two years ago included Sant Antoni.

Este año cambia de nombre otra vez y se llamará Luna llena de Arte lo que indica una sincronía con la luna en vez de los domingos como día fijo. Pero la modificación insinúa además que cambia quien organiza el evento. Ahora se encargará Aida Miró de la muestra, y la marcará con un estilo propio aunque sin alterar el concepto.

This year the name changes another time to Luna llena de Arte which indicates a synchronization with the moon phases instead of the link to Sundays. But, moreover, the modification hints at a relay of who organizes the event. From now on Aida Miró, painter, dancer, performance artist, is taking charge and will mark the show with her own style even though she claims not to alter the concept.

Mientras la Ruta del Arte invita a conocer la obra de artistas individuales en su propio entorno, la Luna llena de Arte ofrece una impresión panorámica de la creatividad en la isla. Ocasionalmente la presentación está acompañada por actuaciones en vivo, desfiles, videos e instalaciones. Pero como suelen surgir espontaneamente, no podemos anunciarles aún.

While the Ruta del Arte invites you to come and see the work of resident artists in their own surroundings, the Domingo del Arte offers a panoramic view of the island’s art scene. Occasionally highlights like performances, video projections and installations are staged, however, as these events are spontaneous we cannot announce them yet.

MEETING POINT SAN CARLOS

a Ruta del Arte se inició hace once años como iniciativa de una libre asociación de artistas. Su propósito es dar a conocer unos cuantos de la extraordinaria multitud de creadores –muchas veces desconocidos– y presentarles al público en toda su diversidad. En el proyecto sin jurado, compuesto por colegas sin prejuicios, se mezclan artistas renombrados internacionalmente con estudiantes avanzados y aficionados empedernidos. La selección se basa esencialmente en la iniciativa de los participantes sin representar la totalidad. Además resulta que la participación varía de un año a otro, así que se incorporan nuevos talentos cada vez. La Ruta del Arte sale a fin de invitar a un público interesado en las artes –tanto a los expertos y coleccionistas como a los aficionados– a explorar la isla por caminos diferentes a los habituales y visitar a los artistas de los que quieran conocer su obra y el lugar en que trabajan. Así que póngase en marcha y empiece la verdadera ruta del arte descubriendo algunos de los artistas siguientes. Bajo la condición de pedir cita previa, la visita será bienvenida durante la temporada entera. El plano del camino de acceso, en algunos casos, facilita encontrar los estudios esparcidos por la isla. Pueden participar artistas visuales que tienen estudio en Ibiza o Formentera y que estén dispuestos a recibir visitantes.

he Art Route was started eleven years ago as an initiative of a few artists who informally founded an association. It’s purpose is to highlight some of the multitude of creative minds on the islands, often thriving in the shadows, and present them to a wider public, in all their diversity. Compiled by colleagues, without a jury, the project admits internationally renowned artists as well as committed newcomers and keen amateurs. The selection is based essentially on the initiative of the participants and does not claim to be complete. Moreover, participation fluctuates from one year to the next, and thus new talents are continually being incorporated. Ruta del Arte invites a public interested in the arts – experts, collectors and art lovers alike– to explore Ibiza off the beaten track, and meet the artists they choose at their place of work. So take the opportunity and start out along the real ruta del arte by visiting some of the following artists and their work while touring the island. Visitors are welcome all year round. The only condition is to phone in advance and fix a date for the visit. Sketch maps will help to find some of the studios scattered all over the island. For visual artists with a studio in Ibiza or Formentera willing to welcome visitors applications are invited.

Nace en los años cuarenta y se deja llevar a Londres a finales de los 60 donde encuentra un deposito de imaginación revolucionaria parecido a la suya. Cuando agota la ilusión con Inglaterra, viene a Ibiza en 1972, y es aquí donde vive aún. Ha expuesto en todo Europa durante los pasados 30 años. Born in the mid forties, Tilbury gravitated to London at the end of the 60's where he found a reservoir of revolutionary imagination that matched his own. When disillusion with England set in, he left in 1972 and went to Ibiza where he has lived ever since.

l día 8 de diciembre Bernd Flemming falleció en su estudio en Düsseldorf a causa de un infarto cardíaco. Hemos perdido no solo un artista multifacético y un amigo íntimo sino también un miembro fundador del ArtClub en el que participó de manera decisiva desde el principio cuando expuso 2001 en la galería El Pintor del acuarelista Johann Baptist Klinger en Cala Llonga. Ahí tuvo lugar entonces una tertulia semanal de artistas que evolucionó hasta constituirse como ArtClub en 2002 y así sigue hasta al día.

Por primera vez, Flemming vino de vacaciones a Ibiza hace 30 años - y quedó tan impresionado, que desde entonces repartió su vida y su trabajo entre Düsseldorf, su domicilio principal, y la mediterránea isla. Antiguo alumno del carismático Joseph Beuys, se instaló en una casita de Dalt Vila, en el antiguo casco de Ibiza, iniciando su personal restauración artística de la isla. De ello dan testimonio, ante todo, las innumerables variaciones sobre detalles de fachadas, fotografiadas por Flemming durante sus primeras exploraciones de la isla. Las fotos en blanco y negro de puertas, ventanas, rejas y cuerdas con ropa tendida, que reflejan juegos de sombra y luz sobre los desmoronados muros, le sirvieron de patrón en un proceso de técnica mixta que le permite retocar libremente, colorear con pastel, combinando de este modo la libertad de las tendencias abstractas con el realismo de los detalles mismos. Si sus primeras fotos ya vivían de los efectos lumínicos del cielo meridional, con el fino granulado de la pintura entra en juego un aspecto material adicional. El color se convierte en portador de luz que dirige hacia los ojos del espectador el calor de los paisajes meridionales. Fueron surgiendo paralelamente otras muchas técnicas mixtas, a menudo mucho mayores en tamaño, que también se apoyaron en el principio básico de mezclar detalles concretos con variaciones de color libres. Puede tratarse de platillos volantes, pero también de objetos concretos como puedan ser sillas, bicicletas o tazas; pueden aparecer poses famosas de Einstein o de Marilyn Monroe. o también elementos del

cómic, bocetos para manuales de instrucciones o señales y marcas de imprenta - Flemming utilizó y revolvió mundos de imágenes de procedencia muy diversa, y los combinó para crear nuevas y sorprendentes visiones del mundo. Es su modo de combinar la forma en que dispone las cosas, lo que nos enseña a contemplar con nuevos ojos esas realidades cotidianas y aparentemente tan familiares. Quedan abolidas la perspectiva central y la adherencia al suelo: dirige ahora la "varita mágica" del lápiz de pastel. La larga lista de sus exposiciones se extiende a Alemania, Suiza y España. Solo podemos mencionar unos momentos estelares: su repetida participación en la ART BASEL así como su colaboración con la Galería BEN WARGIN comprometida con la protección del medio ambiente. Con BEN WARGIN salió a una gira por Alemania y Suiza en los años 80 que duró 3 años advirtiendo artísticamente de los riesgos ambientales. En Ibiza encontró su refugio preferido en el Art Café Escalón en Dalt Vila cerca del Plaza de Vila que llevó su amigo íntimo Volker Zimmermann de 2004 a 2009. Ahí no solo expuso Bernd sino que se turnaban los artistas del Art Club.

n December 8 Bernd Flemming passed away in his studio in Düsseldorf of a heart attack. We not only lost a multifaceted artist and an intimate friend but also one of the founding members of the ArtClub that he shaped in a decisive way from the very beginning when he exhibited in 2001 at Johann Baptist Klinger's gallery El Pintor in Cala Llonga. There, a weekly artists' meeting took place which evolved to become the ArtClub in 2002 and still continues to the day. Flemming, who first came to Ibiza 30 years ago for a vacation, was so fascinated by the island, that from that time on he lived and worked between Düsseldorf, his main residence, and the Mediterranean island. Pupil of the charismatic Joseph Beuys, he moved into a house in the old town initiating his personal artistic restoration of the island. The innumerable variations about details of storefronts, photographed by Flemming during his first explorations of the island, bear witness to this. The photos in black and white of doors, windows, balcony railings and cloth lines that reflect the play of light and shade on the weathered surface of the walls served him as a template for a mixed media technique that allows to freely rework them with pastel and thus combine the liberty of abstraction with figurative details. If his first photos drew from the light effects of the southern sky, the fine grain of the colour adds a material aspect. The colour becomes the medium of light and transports the southern warmth into the eye of the spectator. Besides, he created numerous other mixed media, occasionally much bigger in format but based on the same principle of mixing concrete details with free variations in colour. They may be flying saucers or concrete items like chairs, bicycles or cups. Einstein or Marilyn Monroe may appear in famous poses or elements from comics, sketches of manuals or signs and signets – Flemming uses and mixes images from different worlds and origins and blends them to form surprisingly new points of view. It is his way of combining them that teaches us to look freshly at seemingly familiar every day realities. Central perspective and footing get invalidated; pastel takes over the directing like a magic wand. The long list of exhibitions stretches from Germany to Switzerland to Spain. We can only mention some highlights here: his repeated participation in the ART BASEL as well as his collaboration with the Gallery BEN WARGIN engaged in the protection of the environment. With BEN WARGIN he went on a 3 yeartour of Germany and Switzerland in the 80s emphasizing the environmental risks with artistic means. In Ibiza he found his preferred hangout at the Art Café Escalon in Dalt Vila close to Plaza de Vila which was run by his friend Volker Zimmermann from 2004 to 2009. In this place not only Bernd showed his work but members of the ArtClub alternated in staging exhibitions .

started at art school with fashion design. But my main interest lies with images and sculptures. For many years I painted and illustrated, did portraits, drawings, pastels and oils. Because I began to travel extensively, my way of working adapted to mobility: I painted on sea-stones, designed masques from papier-mâché, jewelery from dried and painted flowers or cactuses – I have a predilection for organic materials and forms. Lately I dedicated a lot of time to writing, because this I could easily do on the road. Unexpectedly I even received a litterature award in Holland three years ago. Since last year I am working for La Maison de l’Elephant.

ace 1968 en Paris, El freeman se impregnó de cultura underground. Dibujó sus primeros carteles en 1987 en Valencia influenciado por el arte psicodélico de los años 70. La pintura, el dibujo e Ibiza (su principal fuente de inspiración) son tan importantes para él, que decidió dar una nueva orientation a su vida después de haber trabajado durante 17 años como sumiller y bodeguero en Francia.

Ahora pintor en Ibiza, utiliza la energía extraordinaria de esta isla mágica para dibujar sus sueños como contando historias.

orn in 1968 in Paris, El Freeman was impregnated by underground culture. He drew his first pieces in 1987 at Valencia, influenced by psychedelic art of the 70s. Painting and drawing and Ibiza as his principal source of inspiration were so important for him that he made up his mind to change his life after working for 17 years as a wine maker and wine tester in France. Now a painter in Ibiza, he exploits the extraordinary energy of this magical island to put his dreams onto paper the way somebody writes stories.

Pinto como manera de descubrir lo desconocido para mi. No busco la belleza estética; más bien busco los mensajes que a través de la pintura afloran del subconsciente. Nunca sé lo que voy a pintar, sólo sigo las formas que surgen y encuentro relación entre los elementos. Pintar para mí es como soñar de noche, cuando muchas imágenes se solapan alterando su significado corriente.

I paint as a way of discovering the unknown to me. I don´t search for beauty, I search for messages that come from the subconscious. I never know what I will paint, I just follow the shapes and find relationships between the elements. Painting is like dreaming at night, where lots of images overlap shifting their meanings.

Carlos Genicio Sant Antoni

orn in Oviedo, he studied in his home town where he also had his first solo exhibition at the age of 19. This exhibition was critically acclaimed. He had a regular column with the magazine “Asturias semanal” for a few years. After completing his military service, he came to Ibiza where he first designed ceramic miniatures which were very popular on the island. Later he continued his art studies in Paris, and in 1979 he returned to Ibiza, where his exceptional ability as a portrait artist stood out, and he is now considered to be one of the best in his field. In 1984 he presented his collection of textile designs at the fashion week known as “Ad Lib”. This had a great influence on the trends of that time. During this period of time he designed various publicity posters for the disco “Es Paradis” and was responsible for all their graphic work. This led to more work in decoration, for example the painted ceiling in the restaurant “Il Vaticano” which is a representation of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, also the mural in the bar “If” and the hotel “S’Anfora” in San Antonio, Ibiza. Now he alternates between portrait artist in the summer months and art teacher in the winter, while at the same time improving his technique in acrylic and oil painting. Carlos Genicio also was awarded a number of prizes and appeared in prestigious publications.

Durante algún tiempo colabora en la revista “Asturias Semanal” con una sección fija denominada “Burradas de Genicio”. Tras su paso por el servicio militar, llega a Ibiza por primera vez, diseñando miniaturas de cerámica, muy populares en la isla. Después se traslada a París, donde amplía sus conocimientos de dibujo y pintura, y en 1979 regresa a Ibiza, donde destaca su excepcional habilidad como retratista, siendo considerado en la actualidad como uno de los mejores. En 1984 presenta su colección de estampados para telas pintadas a mano en la semana de la moda “Ad Lib” con gran repercusión en la esética del momento. Durante esta década realiza varios carteles y diseños para la discoteca “Es Paradis” conocidos en todo el mundo, siendo responsable de la imagen publicitaria de esta empresa en la actualidad. Son destacables los trabajos en el campo de la decoración, como los techos pintados del restaurante “Il Vaticano” en Ibiza, con una magnífica recreación de la Capilla Sixtina, murales como los del bar “If” o los del hotel “S’Anfora” de San Antonio en Ibiza. En la actualidad alterna el retrato durante la temporada de verano, con la de profesor de pintura en invienrno, temporada en la que desarrolla su mayor actividad creativa y pictórica. Carlos Genicio está en posesión de numerosos premios y galardones, figurando en libros y revistas de reconocido prestigio.

o me alcanza la memoria para determinar cuando comencé a jugar con los colores. Pero sí puedo decir que es constante el aprendizaje. Aprender a mirar, a ver, y evolucionar. Parte de esta evolución se la debo a todos los alumnos a los que intento enseñar, así como a la gente que me ha acompañado en las exposiciones y que han decidido colgar un trabajo mio en su casa. Sin ellos mi labor no tendría demasiado sentido.

Bloop Proactive art Festival

l colectivo Biokip realizó, con la ayuda del Ajuntament de Sant Antoni de Portmany, durante el verano del 2011 la edición cero de un festival interactivo de arte urbano denominado Bloop Festival. Bloop, como el nombre de un sonido marino misterioso, se entiende como un mensaje del fondo del mar para el underground. Biokip es un versátil conjunto creativo que se originó en 2004, 'inspirado por gente ordinaria para gente ordinaria'. Sus actividades incluyen eventos de música y fiestas como también actividades de galeristas y comisarios de exposiciones.

Por este motivo, se empezó a trabajar en la edición del 2012 que se denominó Bloop International Proactive Art Festival. Un concepto que pretende que los tres elementos -artistas, obras y espectadores- lo protagonicen igualmente. Tuvo lugar del 15 de julio al 31 de agosto y ha pasado de una sala a más de diez espacios y escenarios expositivos: el Faro de Coves Blanques y Sa Punta des Molí en Sant Antoni, Can Curt en Sant Agustí, Can Jeroni en Sant Josep, Dalt Vila de Eivissa, Kumharas, Space, Salinas, Las Dalias ... Colaboraron cuatro instituciones y participaron cerca de 40 artistas, entre los cuales por primera vez: Aleix Gordo Houstad, Asia Komarova, Billy, Skount, Royal, Phlegm, Olek, Montse Nadal, Mina Hamada, Massimo Mazzone, Marc Colomines, Malarky, LoSpino, Livio, Lee Simmons, Kenor, Federico Massa aka Cruz, H101, Bortusk Leer, Btoy, Claudio Sinatti. La sociedad actual está manejada por los mercados y las personas son meros robots que se han de rebelar de alguna manera.

saac Asimov's laws of robotics and artificial intelligence are the concepts on which he founds his work. All the pieces have a double meaning which relates to the actual crisis and the necessity for humans to reinvent their reality. In the series 'EPROM' he introduced reprogramable informatic circuits out of production. 'They can be erased and newly programmed just like we can learn to forget the known in order to get to know it freshly from another viewpoint'. The society today is managed by the markets and people are mere robots that have to revolt in some way.

His sculpture originates from transforming different materials like iron, stone, wood, bark, roots. In painting he attempts to implement plasticity where the quest for new forms and textures and mixing media has absorbed his creativity. The artworks are not only painted but basically constructed from textiles like sackcloth, canvas, cotton and other elements which consolidate the surface of the piece and gain a life of their own.

He exhibited in solo and group shows in Spain and Portugal, applying a technique oriented to polymeric textures and mixed media on canvas or plywood etc.. Stage design for theatre and dance has been one of his last jobs that extended his endeavours to the performing arts.

La escenografía para Teatro y Danza ha sido uno de sus últimos trabajos llevando su obra al terreno de las artes escénicas.

Los motivos, aunque figurativos, surgen de una multitud de piezas de procedencia muy variada que aportan sus propios motivos e historias. Así se origina una cierta tensión, ya que los detalles llevan su propia voz y se encuentran alusiones, juegos de palabras e ironías que parecen contradecir al motivo del cuadro entero. Como emplea reproducciones de sus propias obras y las de otros artistas entre el montón de lo que reune, en sus collages se encuentra un mundo – un espejo de la historia contemporánea y en particular de lo que pasa en Ibiza.

The subjects, though apparently figurative, are made up of a myriad of pieces from an entirely different origin each carrying its own motif and history. The process creates a tension, because the details have their own voice and may contain allusions, word games and ironies that contradict the total picture. As she uses reproductions of her own work and that of other artists among the pile of her collections, in her work surges a microcosm – a mirror of contemporary history and, in particular, of what happens on Ibiza.

ste año voy a mostrar una pieza esculturórica. Comenzé con la escultura relativamente tarde en mi vida pero creo que el descubrimiento me ayudó encontrar un nuevo acceso a mi arte. Me formé como pintora en Londres pero fue mi afición a los caballos y a sus movimientos lo que me atrajo a la escultura. Después de vivir fuera de Inglaterra por más de 50 años, ahora tengo mi estudio en Ibiza. Para mi ambas artes se complementan.

his year I decided to exhibit a piece of sculpture. I came to sculpture relatively late in life, but I believe this discovery helped me find a new approach to my art. I was trained as a painter in London, but it was my love of horses, and also of movement that lured me into the art of sculpture. After living away from England for more than 50 years I now have my studio in Ibiza. For me both arts go hand in hand.

scultores en vivo (sculptors live) -subtitled ‘Outdoor atelier’- is a project put on stage for the first time last October in Ibiza by the freelance event manager, Analía Varela, Butaca5, with the backing of Eivissa’s cultural department. It is a meeting of sculptors from different parts of the world installing their workshops in a public space in order to create a piece of art live.

They worked iron, wood, stone, cement, glass, cardboard and various recycled materials.

The following week, from October 24 to 31, an exhibition with the resulting pieces was staged in the Cloister, former seat of the municipality. By majority, the participants awarded the prize to Jaume Marí.

• imparting visibility of an artist’s solitary work to the general public • taking art to the streets and allow the visitors to gain an insight into the sculptors’ different techniques and styles of working. Ibiza’s municipality collaborated in the organization of the event by putting the location and infrastructure at their disposal, and even established a prize of 1.200 € for the piece selected by the jury comprising the participating sculptures only. The project was promoted by two Ibicencan sculptors who took part in the event themselves: Pedro Juan Hormigo and Jaume Marí Torres. From October 16 to 23, twenty sculptors installed themselves on the Baluarte de Santa Lucia, a part of the town’s fortification in the old part of Ibiza. For their work they were given a sun blind, a table, a chair, power access and running water. Moreover, each participant had access to a shed where to keep his tools and the artwork in process after a day’s work.

During the week, each artist developed his project of creating a sculpture from an idea to the final result, the whole process open to the public. Visitors were able to see how the sculptures were made and how they evolved in the course of the week.

The organizer, Analía Varela, Butaca5, has the firm intention to repeat the event in 2013. Even though, at the time of going to press, the exact date could not be confirmed, we may hope that it will be scheduled in autumn 2013. It certainly would be a welcome enrichment of the island’s cultural agenda which so far has widely lacked events focusing on sculpture.

Vernissage en la Sala Capitular, Claustro Eivissa

scultores en vivo con el subtítulo Outdoor Atelier (estudio al aire libre) es un proyecto que se realizó por primera vez el pasado octubre en Ibiza por la gestora cultural freelance, Analía Varela, Butaca5, con el apoyo del Ayuntamiento de Eivissa. Se trata de un encuentro de escultores procedentes de diversas partes del mundo, que se instalaron de forma individual en un mismo espacio público para crear en vivo una obra.

Los objetivos de “Escultores en vivo” :

La organizadora, Analia Varela, Butaca5, tiene la intención de repetir el acontecimiento en 2013. Aunque en el momento de cierre de redacción no se podía confirmar la fecha exacta, podemos esperar que se fije para el otoño 2013, ya que abriría una agenda cultural de la isla con una actividad que hasta ahora han sido pocos o más bien inexistentes.

• Dar visibilidad ante el público general a un artista solitario como lo es el escultor. • Llevar el arte a la calle y permitir comprender al público los diferentes procesos de trabajo y las técnicas de cada escultor.

El Ayuntamiento de Ibiza colaboró en la organización de este encuentro facilitando los espacios públicos y la infraestructura, además estableció un premio de 1.200 € para la obra más valorada por el jurado que fueron los propios escultores participantes. Apadrinaron este proyecto los escultores ibicencos y también participantes en el encuentro: Pedro Juan Hormigo y Jaume Marí Torres.

Del 16 al 23 de octubre 20 escultores se instalaron en la explanada del Baluarte de Santa Lucía, dentro de la zona antigua amurallada de Ibiza. Para su trabajo les facilitaron un toldo, una mesa, una silla, acceso a electricidad y agua corriente. A cada participante correspondió también un almacén para guardar sus materiales y la obra después del trabajo cada día. Trabajaron el hierro, la madera, la piedra, el cemento, cristal, cartón y materiales reciclados. Durante una semana cada autor desarrolló el proyecto de creación de una

La semana posterior a este encuentro, del 24 al 31 de octubre, se realizó una exposición en el Claustro del antiguo Ayuntamiento de Ibiza con las 20 obras resultantes del encuentro. El premio lo ganó Jaume Marí por voto mayoritario de los participantes.

here are recurring elements in our work: human figures, animals, fishes, fisherwomen, the varieties of ‘looking for some energy’, the ‘healing trees’, the dangerous fishes, the monsters, the ‘love trees’. All of them wrapped in emotions. The sculptures and paintings of the fisher women represent the fisherwoman or the fisherman that is inside everybody, capable of fishing the infinite opportunities that life can offer .
