EDITORIAL

sta duodécima edición de la Ruta del Arte representa de nuevo una invitación a los amantes de las artes para visitar los estudios de artistas en Ibiza y Formentera así como una guía por la escena artística.

his twelfth issue of the Ruta del Arte is once again an invitation to art lovers to visit the studios of the participating artists in Ibiza and Formentera and a guide to the island's art scene.

Además, en este número damos cierta prioridad a la fotografía y al arte digital, realzando en la exposición a los fotógrafos participantes en la revista bajo el título “Luces vagantes: información incidental acerca de una isla” en Eivissa a finales de septiembre. En futuras ediciones iremos dando relieve a otros medios de las artes visuales, por ejemplo la escultura el año que viene.

The focus of this year's edition is on photography and digital art. It will be followed up with a group show titled "Stray lights: incidental information about an island" in late September in Ibiza town. In issues to come, other visual media will be highlighted, for instance sculpture next year.

Las portadas muestran una tormenta espectacular, captada por Bamboo. La foto fue tomada hace unos 25 años con su Nikon analógica y exposición larga desde el tejado de su casa en los montes de Sant Joan cuando de improviso el cielo se oscureció y esta tremenda tempestad frustró sus planes para ir a una fiesta de luna llena. Años después ha retocado la imagen digitalmente para amplificar sus colores. En el contexto de poner en relieve la fotografía, Pritam dedica un artículo al arte digital y las nuevas posibilidades del diseño visual que ofrece la tecnología informática: programas como el legendario Photoshop ponen la manipulación de imágenes al alcance de artistas que les gusta hacer experimentos. Sin embargo, las imágenes y sus contenidos no solo pueden ser modificadas sino también se pueden inventar desde el principio: componer diseños complejos y con muchos niveles y efectos sorprendentes en un ordenador, ‘pintar’ en una tablet y así mismo cortar peliculas de autor en un smartphone. A los artistas se les ofrece un medio nuevo. Otro artículo se dedica a las artes en la isla hermana, Formentera, en la que una rica escena artística se ve obligada a enfrentarse con reducidas oportunidades para exponer sus obras.

El último artículo es un homenaje a un amigo y colega, Holger Dunckel, que falleció inesperadamente el año pasado. Una gran perdida para la escena artística de Ibiza ya que Holger ha promovido eventos que transcendieron los limites de la isla– como organizar exposiciones internacionales a los que ha llevado artistas de Ibiza. Otro evento incisivo en el transcurso del año pasado fue el conocimiento de los sondeos petrolíferos en el Mediterráneo, también en el entorno cercano de las Pitiusas. La reacción en las islas fue casi unánime y furiosa y llevó a una alianza de acción a la que se unió también el ArtClub ayudando, por ejemplo a dar forma al evento ‘InformArte’ que tuvo lugar en Las Dalias en octubre. La Alianza Mar Blava ha tenido eco entre los artistas lo que demuestran varias obras representadas en esta publicación que tratan el tema o lo comentan críticamente. The cover shows a spectacular thunderstorm, captured by Bamboo about 25 years ago. He took the shot with his analog Nikon and long exposure from the roof of his house in San Juan. when the storm was approaching as he was preparing to go to a fullmoon party. Later the colours were digitally enhanced. In the context of focusing on photography, Pritam contributed a feature on digital art and the possibilities for visual arts made available by information technology: Applications like the legendary Photoshop put image manipulation in the hands of artists keen to experiment. Moreover, the contents of images not only may be modified but also invented from scratch: you may compose complex, multilayered artworks with stunning eﬀects on a computer, paint on a tablet and cut an indie movie on a smartphone. For artists, this is a new medium which recently entered the scene. Another feature is dedicated to the arts on our sister island, Formentera, where a thriving art scene is faced with diminishing opportunities to exhibit. The last feature is a tribute to a friend and fellow artist, Holger Dunckel, who died unexpectedly last year. For the art scene of Ibiza he had a considerable importance as he promoted events like international exhibitions to which he invited artists from the island. Another decisive point last year was the news of oil prospection going on in the Mediterranean, also in the immediate vicinity of the Pityuses The unanimous reaction on the islands was one of outrage and led to the foundation of an action alliance which the Art Club also joined, helping, for example, to give form to the event InformArte in Las Dalias last October. The Alianza Mar Blava (Blue Sea Alliance) has caused repercussions among the artists, visible in various artworks featured in the magazine which depicted or commented the instance. critically. Highlights have been so far, for instance, the Moscow Ballet, the retrospective on the gallery El Mensajero, the annual exhibition of the Association of Visual Artists of Eivissa (AMAE) and various operas staged by Armin Heinemann.

l Far de ses Coves Blanques es el antiguo faro, ya en desuso, de Portmany, construido en 1887. Tras una restauración y adecuación, actualmente está dedicado a usos culturales. Es la sede del Centre d’Interpretació de la Mar, que tiene como fin el estudio, la investigación, la exposición y la promoción de temas marinos. Cada verano acoge la Universidad Internacional del Mar.

he Far ses Coves Blanques was formerly Portmany’s lighthouse, built in 1887 but out of order for years. After restauration and shaping up, it is now dedicated to cultural uses. It is the seat of the Centre for the interpretation of the Sea, whose task is the studying, putting on display and promoting marine matters. Each summer, it hosts the International University of the Sea.

an Portmany es una de las mejores muestras de la arquitectura ibicenca de inspiración colonial, obra del arquitecto Joan Gómez Ripoll, Campos, que la construyó en 1933. El edificio tiene la consideración de Bien de Interés Cultural y actualmente es un espacio municipal que acoge distintos servicios y eventos de carácter social y cultural.

an Portmany is one of the best examples of Ibicencan colonial inspired architecture, designed by Joan Gómez Ripoll and built in 1933. The building is among the ones considered for declaring it a monument ‘of special cultural interest’. At the moment it is a location that hosts various services and events of a social and cultural character.

a galería de arte Can Jeroni fue inaugurada el 17 de diciembre de 2009 con el objetivo de difundir, dinamizar y fomentar las diferentes artes plásticas, creadas tanto en la isla de Ibiza como en el exterior. Can Jeroni se encuentra en el centro de Sant Josep, al lado de la iglesia y en el inicio del camino que lleva hasta sa Talaia. Sus instalaciones forman parte del antiguo cine de Can Jeroni, que durante años se mantuvo activo y que de nuevo recobra su vocación de centro de expansión cultural. En Can Jeroni se han realizado a lo largo de estos últimos años varias exposiciones que han dotado a esta galería de una merecida fama entre los artistas de la Isla. Sus instalaciones, llenas de luz y tranquilidad, ofrecen un espacio idóneo para disfrutar de la creación artística.

Can Jeroni es actualmente la galería de arte de referencia en el municipio de Sant Josep con una programación encuadrada en el programa de acciones culturales que la Regidoria de Cultura realiza a lo largo del año.

he art gallery Can Jeroni was inaugurated December 17, 2009, with the aim of promoting the variety of visual arts created both on the island and abroad. Can Jeroni is located in the centre of Sant Josep, not far from the church and at the beginning of the path to the Atalaya mountain. The building is part of the old cinema that was operating for many years. Now it recovers its vocation as a cultural centre. Can Jeroni hosted a couple of shows over the last years that made its name among the artists of the island. The rooms, brightly lit and quiet, oﬀer a space that is ideal for looking at art. At the moment, Can Jeroni is the showroom of reference in the municipality, with a program that fits the cultural action staged by the cultural department of Sant Josep.

Después de varias remodelaciones, Can Curt adquiere un aspecto moderno que se integra con la arquitectura tradicional de los edificios que la rodean. Su ubicación en la plaza de Sant Agustí, le proporciona una especial relevancia como núcleo de oferta cultural que de forma continuada ofrece la Regidoría de Cultura del municipio josepí.

After being remodelled various times, Can Curt obtained a modern look which integrates with the traditional architecture of the surrounding buildings. Its location on the plaza of Sant Agustí imparts a special relevance as a nucleus of cultural events that the department of culture of Sant Josep is constantly promoting.

Desde su inauguración han sido muchísimos artistas quienes nos han ofrecido diferentes muestras de su trabajo. Can Curt ofrece la posibilidad de que artistas consagrados o no, puedan mostrar su trabajo a quienes decidan disfrutar de la calma y el relajado ambiente que ofrece Sant Agustí.

Una feria de arte al aire libre

n 2003 el Art Club, y en particular Sola, su actual presidenta, iniciaba una exhibición mensual en la que los artistas visuales podían exponer sus obras de manera informal. Escultores, pintores y fotógrafos montan una muestra al aire libre que supone una panorámica artística de la isla.

n 2003, the Art Club, and in particular its actual president, Sola, initiated a monthly forum for artists to display their work for an evening in an informal way. Painters, sculptors, photographers put on an outdoor show that makes for a rich cross section of what’s being created on the island.

Al comienzo tenía lugar exclusivamente en los jardines de Las Dalias bajo el nombre Noche del Arte. A partir de 2008 se celebra en lugares alternos bajo el título Domingo del Arte. Santa Eulària y sus varios municipios fueron su primer anfitrión, desde entonces el acontecimiento se ha celebrado también en Sant Josep, Eivissa y Sant Antoni.

At the beginning it used to be called Noche del Arte and took place exclusively at Las Dalias. Since 2008 its location is diﬀerent every month during the season. It first ventured out to Santa Eulària and its various villages, and then it spread to Sant Josep, caught on in Eivissa, and two years ago included Sant Antoni.

El año pasado cambió de nombre otra vez y se llama ahora Luna llena de Arte lo que indica una sincronía con la luna en vez de los domingos como día fijo. Pero la modificación insinúa además que cambia quien organiza el evento. Ahora se encarga Aida Miró de la muestra, y la marca con un estilo propio aunque sin alterar el concepto.

Last year the name changed another time to Luna llena de Arte which indicates a synchronization with the moon phases instead of the link to Sundays. But, moreover, the modification hints at a relay of who organizes the event. While the Ruta del Arte invites you to come and see the work of resident artists in their own surroundings, the Domingo del Arte offers a panoramic view of the island’s art scene. Occasionally highlights like performances, video projections and installations are staged, however, as these events are spontaneous we cannot announce them yet.

Initially more centered in oﬀering conferences and debates, the Club recently diversified considerably its activities. Thus, the platform iniciated by the newspaper hosts movies, concerts, theatre plays, dance events and art exhibitions, converting it into a dynamic element within the social and cultural life of the island.

a Ruta del Arte se inició hace once años como iniciativa de una libre asociación de artistas. Su propósito es dar a conocer unos cuantos de la extraordinaria multitud de creadores –muchas veces desconocidos– y presentarles al público en toda su diversidad. En el proyecto sin jurado, compuesto por colegas sin prejuicios, se mezclan artistas renombrados internacionalmente con estudiantes avanzados y aficionados empedernidos. La selección se basa esencialmente en la iniciativa de los participantes sin representar la totalidad. Además resulta que la participación varía de un año a otro, así que se incorporan nuevos talentos cada vez. La Ruta del Arte sale a fin de invitar a un público interesado en las artes –tanto a los expertos y coleccionistas como a los aficionados– a explorar la isla por caminos diferentes a los habituales y visitar a los artistas de los que quieran conocer su obra y el lugar en que trabajan. Así que póngase en marcha y empiece la verdadera ruta del arte descubriendo algunos de los artistas siguientes. Bajo la condición de pedir cita previa, la visita será bienvenida durante la temporada entera. El plano del camino de acceso, en algunos casos, facilita encontrar los estudios esparcidos por la isla. Pueden participar artistas visuales que tienen estudio en Ibiza o Formentera y que estén dispuestos a recibir visitantes.

he Art Route was started eleven years ago as an initiative of a few artists who informally founded an association. It’s purpose is to highlight some of the multitude of creative minds on the islands, often thriving in the shadows, and present them to a wider public, in all their diversity. Compiled by colleagues, without a jury, the project admits internationally renowned artists as well as committed newcomers and keen amateurs. The selection is based essentially on the initiative of the participants and does not claim to be complete. Moreover, participation fluctuates from one year to the next, and thus new talents are continually being incorporated. Ruta del Arte invites a public interested in the arts – experts, collectors and art lovers alike– to explore Ibiza off the beaten track, and meet the artists they choose at their place of work. So take the opportunity and start out along the real RUTA DEL ARTE by visiting some of the following artists and their work while touring the island. Visitors are welcome all year round. The only condition is to phone in advance and fix a date for the visit. Sketch maps will help to find some of the studios scattered all over the island. For visual artists with a studio in Ibiza or Formentera willing to welcome visitors applications are invited.

‘La fotógrafa, que desde mis inicios en la fotografía me inspiró fue Francesca Woodman, por la intensidad de sus imágenes, casi siempre autorretratos en blanco y negro.

‘The photographer who inspired me from the very start was Francesca Woodman because of the intensity of her images, nearly always black and white self portraits.

Mi trabajo se basa en el autorretrato, retrato y desnudo, como forma de expresión para captar la esencia y el yo más profundo que hay en cada ser y así inmortalizarlo.’.

acer en una necrópolis impone una cierta tendencia oxímoron. O al menos es una buena excusa para justificar la contradicción, la ambigüedad y la incoherencia que campan a sus anchas en la obra de Toni Planells: fotos que parecen dibujos, dibujos que parecen fotos, fotos que parecen dibujos que parecen fotos… De oficio pastelero, hace una década que trabaja en una sala de exposiciones y auditorio. Tiene estudios en Historia del Arte en la Universidad de Zaragoza, pero no logró acceder a Bellas Artes. Aún así se cree ilustrador, hasta el punto de que hay quien le sigue la corriente y ya le ha encargado portadas de discos, carátulas de documentales, carteles e ilustraciones para el suplemento cultural de Diario de Ibiza. Incluso ha conseguido proclamarse vencedor en un concurso de cómic.

Desde hace cerca de un lustro se dedica a la experimentación fotográfica, aunque no es fotógrafo. Nació en una necrópolis, recuerden. ARTE DIGITAL

oy, cuando ya hemos vivido un 14% del siglo XXI, el arte visual cuenta con una herramienta que está silenciosamente revolucionando la historia del arte. Con la aparición de la tecnología digital y la posibilidad de aplicarla en la creación, impresión y transmisión electrónica de imágenes, las Bellas Artes entran en una nueva dimensión. Desde siempre los pintores figurativos han utilizado instrumentos y técnicas para ampliar sus pequeños dibujos a un lienzo de grandes dimensiones. En la antigüedad se utilizó la cuadrícula y el pantógrafo. En el siglo XVI Miguel Ángel hizo grandes plantillas de papel para transportar sus dibujos al techo de la capilla sixtína. En ese mismo siglo se inventó la “cámara oscura". Compuesta de lentes y espejos, la utilizaron Canaletto y muchos otros artistas de la época, para proyectar el dibujo ampliado en el lienzo a pintar. A principios de siglo XX la fotografía era el "Arte Nuevo" y en 1924 Man Ray realizó su famoso montaje: "El violín de Ingres" poniendo las aberturas en forma de f de un violín sobre la espalda desnuda de una mujer. El autor realizó en esa época muchos de sus famosos collages de inspiración surrealista. Picasso, Braque y otros pintores cubistas pegaron también recortes de papel y fotografías en sus pinturas. En tiempos mas recientes los proyectores de diapositivas se utilizaron mucho, sobretodo en las obras hiper-realistas cuando se intentaba que los retratos tuvieran una calidad "fotográfica". Todo eso e infinitamente mas, es posible ahora gracias al ordenador. Potentes programas informáticos ponen en manos del artista instrumentos capaces de realizar las mas variadas tareas de forma fácil, rápida y eficiente. Photoshop, el programa conocido popularmente por su capacidad de mejorar el cuerpo de modelos y famosos, es una extraordinaria herramienta que dispone de muchísimas aplicaciones: 16 millones de colores y un número incalculable de pinceles de distintas formas y tamaños. Cuenta también con un aerógrafo (que nunca se tapa ni gotea) y se pueden usar capas y transparencias. Las opciones de brillo, contraste, tono y saturación permiten editar las imágenes con gran precisión. Sus innumerables filtros y efectos amplían el horizonte y dan nuevas alas a la imaginación.

La opción de retroceder y eliminar lo que no nos gusta estimula la experimentación. Tenemos la posibilidad de probar con distintos colores para una figura o un fondo. Podemos cambiar un personaje sin perder tiempo y sin gastar una gota de óleo o acrílico! Es posible ampliar un detalle para trabajarlo mejor y también de reducirlo para verlo "de lejos". Se puede poner dos o mas versiones de un mismo tema en la pantalla, para compararlas. Que no nos engañe el nombre del programa; se puede crear Arte Digital sin utilizar para nada la fotografía. El punto de partida también pueden ser: dibujos propios escaneados o realizados con las herramientas del ordenador. El pintor de caballete sabe bien lo que es un día de viento. Sabe también que si empieza con la luz de la mañana es posible que termine de pintar con el cielo rojo y unas sombras totalmente distintas. Y que antes de terminar tendrá que limpiar todos esos pinceles o se secará la pintura. Aún así, son muchos los pintores fieles a los medios tradicionales que jamás dejaran el óleo, el mezclar manualmente los colores y el sentir el aroma de la trementina. Son artistas que han sabido sacar el mejor partido de esas técnicas para crear obras memorables. El óleo también fue una revolución en la pintura y nadie duda de su excelencia. Es todavía único en la creación de atmósferas, como las conseguidas por Velázquez o Vermeer. Y ya está demostrado que dura mas de 500 años! Hay pintores que pintan al óleo sobre una impresión digital, o que intervienen la impresión con barnices y veladuras coloreadas. Otros la dejan tal como salió de la impresora digital, aplicándole sólo una capa de barniz mate como protección. En el contexto académico e institucional de galerías y museos, una impresión artística de alta calidad producida digitalmente se denomina: Giclée, y está reconocido como un medio de expresión artístico valorado y perdurable. Obras únicas o ediciones numeradas y firmadas por el autor, de la forma que se hace tradicionalmente con grabados como: litografías, xilografías, serigrafías, Etc. En el aspecto comercial y social, la edición múltiple de una obra hace que baje su precio de venta y que se amplíe su difusión. Esta fue una de las metas del Pop Art pero que sólo se

logró a nivel de pósters y camisetas. Las serigrafías de Andy Warhol, realizadas también a partir de fotografías, valen hoy muchos miles de dólares. La historia de la humanidad es la historia de la evolución de la consciencia y el arte es un reflejo de esa evolución. La belleza y la armonía de las obras hablan a los estudiosos del grado de cultura, inteligencia o refinamiento de un pueblo o de una época. En nuestros días Photoshop, Illustrator, Painter, Etc. son el milagro tecnológico. En un comienzo lo usaron fotógrafos y publicistas, pero rápidamente pasa a ser vanguardia entre los artistas visuales. El ordenador es un instrumento con el que se crean composiciones, colores, armonías y ritmos diferentes. Imágenes surgidas del estudio y la inspiración dan vida a obras de nuevos estilos, belleza y profundidad. El genio salió de la botella y puso en nuestras manos una máquina que puede hacerlo todo. ¡Ahora el único límite… es la imaginación! Empiezan a aparecer las primeras impresoras 3-D capaces de materializar pequeños objetos tridimensionales creados con el ordenador. Actualmente se utilizan especialmente en medicina, pero ¿Cuánto tardarán los escultores en empezar a crear con ellas? Arte y Ciencia unidos para transformar los sueños en realidad. Invito a todos los artistas que no lo conozcan a probar las posibilidades del ordenador. Les aseguro que es mucho mas de lo que he escrito aquí. Cada uno encontrará la aplicación que le sea mas útil. Para los que dibujan a mano alzada existen tabletas gráficas con diferentes lápices sensibles a la presión. Hay también pantallas sobre las que se puede dibujar directamente. Tiene esta nueva ciencia algo de orgánico que hace que los colores se mezclen y a veces chorreen como en la realidad. Tecnología extraterrestre, dice un artista amigo. Termino con una frase de Steve Jobs, alma del Apple Macintosh, y que muchos en Ibiza compartirán conmigo : “Prefiero ser un pirata a enrolarme en la marina” Pritam, 2014.

oday when we have already lived 14% of the XXI century, visual arts count on a tool that is silently revolutionising the history of art. With the upcoming digital technology and the possibility to use it in the creation, printing and electronic transmission of images, Fine Arts is entering a new dimension. All along figurative painters have used instruments and techniques to enlarge their small drawings to a sizable canvas. In ancient times, they used a grid and the pantograph. In the XVI century Michelangelo made big paper stencils to transfer his drawings to the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. At the same time the ‘camera obscura’ was invented. Made up of lenses and mirrors, it was used by Canaletto and other artists at the time to project the enlarged drawing onto the canvas to be painted. At the beginning of the XX century, photography was the ‘new art’. And in 1924, Man Ray created his famous montage ‘Ingre’s Violin’ by putting the f-shaped openings of a violin on top of the back of a naked woman. The author did many of his famous surrealist-inspired collages in that period. Picasso, Braque and other cubist painters glued paper cuts and photos in their paintings. More recently, slide projectors were used, especially for hyper-realist works trying to achieve a ‘photographic quality’. All this and infinitely more is possible now thanks to the computer. Potent applications put instruments in the artists’ hands enabling them to complete most varied of tasks in an easy, fast and efficient way. Photoshop, the program well known for its capacity to pimp the images of models and film stars, is an extraordinary tool that boasts innumerable applications: 16 million colours and countless brushes of different forms and sizes, among them an airbrush (that never cloggs up nor drips). And you may build your image in layers that include transparencies. The options for contrast, brightness, colour tone and saturation allow for editing images with great precision. Its countless filters and effects enlarge the horizon and award new wings to the imagination. The option to go back and eliminate what we did not like stimulates experimentation.

We have the freedom to try different colours for a figure or shape or a background. We can modify a figure without wasting time and without wasting a drop of oil or acrylic paint! It is possible to enlarge a detail in order to work on it more closely or to shrink the whole image to get an overall view ‘from afar’. You can put various versions of the same design side by side on the screen in order to compare them. But don’t let the name of the application fool you: digital art may be created without the use of photos. The starting point may also be one’s own drawings scanned in or made up with the tools at hand in Photoshop. The painter with his easel knows well what a windy day means. He knows as well that if he starts with the morning light he may well end up painting with red skies and completely different shadows. And before leaving his studio he has to clean all these brushes or the drying paint will stiffen them. Nevertheless, many painters stay with their traditional media and will never quit oils, the manual mixing of colours and the smell of turpentine. They are artists who have managed to make the best of these techniques to create memorable works. Oil paint was also a revolution in painting and no one doubts its excellence. It is still unique in creating atmospheres like the ones achieved by Velázquez or Vermeer. And it has proven to last more than 500 years! There are painters who paint in oil on top of a digital print, or who intervene in the printing with coloured varnish and glazes. Others leave the digital print as it is and give it only a coat of flat varnish as protection. In the academical and institutional context of galleries and museums, a high quality digital print of an artwork is called Giclée and is recognised as an esteemed and enduring medium of artistic expression: unique pieces or numbered editions, signed by the author, just like traditional engravings are dealt with: lithography, woodcuts, silk-screen etc. In a commercial and social perspective, issuing multiple copies of an artwork means its price drops and its diffusion increases. That was one of the goals of Pop Art though it was achieved only on the level of posters and printed T-shirts.

The history of mankind is the history of the evolution of consciousness and the arts are a reflexion of this evolution. The beauty and harmony of the artworks tell researchers about the culture, intelligence or refinement of a people or an era. Nowadays, Photoshop, Illustrator, Painter are the technological miracle. At the beginning they were used by photographers and in advertising, but quickly their use spread and became vanguard among visual artists. The computer is an instrument that induces diﬀerent compositions, colours, harmonies and rhythms. Images surging from studies and inspiration give life to artworks of new styles, beauty and profoundness.

The first 3-D printers are becoming available, capable of materializing small objects according to computer designs. At the moment they are used mainly in medicine, but how long will it take sculptors to start creating with them? Arts and Science united to transform dreams into reality. I invite all artists who have not experienced the possibilities of the computer, to do so. I promise, they oﬀer so much more than I am able to discuss here. Everybody will find an application that suits him. For those who like drawing by hand there are graphic tablets with diﬀerent styluses sensitive to pressure. There are also touch screens that you can draw on directly. This new science has something organic that lets you mix colours and at times they drip like in real life. ‘Extraterrestrial technology’ is what an artist friend calls it. I end with a phrase by Steve Jobs, the soul of the Apple Macintosh, and that many in Ibiza will agree with: “ I prefer being a pirate to enrolling in the navy.” Pritam, 2014

Trabajó y vivió durante largos períodos como actriz y cantante en Berlín, Viena, Hamburgo, Múnich y Nueva York. En 1970 tiene sus propios shows en la televisión alemana, como por ejemplo ‘Belle Epoque’ o ‘Rut Rex canta Erich Kästner’. Después de la muerte de su marido en 1973 se despide de su carrera de escenario cantando en el Recital Carnegie Hall en Nueva York.

En 1976 una sospecha de cáncer la relacionó con el arte chino de Qi Gong. Estudia medicina tradicional china (TCM) en Beijing y Tíbet y en este contexto viajó extensamente por China. El gran hombre de letras, médico y monje Shaolin Shi De Qian se prestó de maestro y se volvió su ‘abuelo buddhista’. También enseñó en el conservatorio superior de música del territorio del Sarre. A partir de los años 90 se dedicó a escribir libros, entre otros ‘Eine Frau reist allein durch die Welt’ (Una mujer viaja sola por el mundo), ‘Gesichter der Liebe’ (Caras del amor), ‘Endstation Alzheimer’ (Estación terminal Alzheimer). En este momento trabaja en una guía de salud inspirada por los monjes Shaolin ‘Was mich die Shaolin Mönche lehrten: Bis ins hohe Alter gesund, schön und sorglos glücklich’ (Lo que me enseñaron los monjes Shaolin: Sano, bello y feliz hasta en la vejez) Se siente como en casa en todo el mundo y a la vez en ninguna parte, se enamora de Ibiza en 1997 – del mar infinito. Sintió que aquí se cumpliría su sueño de volverse ‘un ser de luz, un angel del sueño, una estrella entre las estrellas’ como escribió Djelal ed din Rumi. En 2003 una amiga – la reconocida pintora Traute Nierth basado en la isla de Sylt– la instigó a experimentar con la pintura bajo el lema ‘del color a la forma’. Y resultó que esa frase le iba a significar el mundo: pidió movimiento, baile, energía elemental y color a gritos. Desde entonces, pintar en Ibiza significa para ella sumergirse en la vida y la infinidad del mar.

At home everywhere and nowhere in the world, in 1997 she falls in love with Ibiza - with the infinite sea. She felt, her dream of becoming ‘a light being, an angel of dream, a star among the stars’ as Djelal ed din Rumi described it, might come true here. In 2003, a friend of hers, the renowned painter Traute Nierth based on the Isle of Sylt, inspired her to experiment with color according to the motto ‘From color to form’. To her this phrase became meaningful. It cried out for movement, dance, elemental energy, for colour and power. Ever since then, painting on Ibiza means immersing herself in life and the infinite sea.

Sin ellos mi labor no tendría demasiado sentido.

Soy pintora, la pintura es parte de mi, convivo con ella desde muy pequeña. Conozco sus olores, sus caminos, sus detalles, amores y contradicciones, es para mi una forma de vida. Cada lugar con sus luces, sombras y estados de ánimo me llevan a recorrer ese camino y así plasmarlo en mi obra. Trabajo con variadas técnicas; desde la suavidad de la acuarela y el papel hasta los aceites y óleos usando maderas con texturas totalmente rústicas. Trabajo en mi propio taller en Ibiza. Actualmente imparto talleres de pintura decorativa y participo de muestras colectivas con artistas de la isla.

I am a painter, painting is part of me, I live with it since a very early age. I know its smells, its ways, its details, loves and contradictions, it is a way of life for me. Every location with its lights, shades and states of mind takes me down this path and thus include it in my work. I use various techniques, from the smoothness of watercolours and paper to to the rustic style of oils on textured wood. I work in my studio in Ibiza. At the moment, I give workshops for decorative painting and take part in group shows with artists of the island.

Holger E. Dunckel Artista polifacético: pintor, fotógrafo, escritor, músico, performance artist *1953 – † 2013

olger E. Dunckel nació en el barrio de Wilhelmsburg, en el Puerto de Hamburgo en 1953. Gran artista muy querido en la isla, falleció inesperadamente el 18 de junio de 2013. Dunckel fue un artista vanguardista que estudió economía y marketing, dibujo y filosofía. Participó con importantes formaciones en la movida musical contemporánea con performances multimedia en Europa (Documenta 77 en Kassel). LLega a Ibiza en la primavera del 78 y encuentra una vida rural, aprendiendo agricultura, mampostería y la lengua del lugar. Desde entonces residía en la isla, hablando el ibicenco perfectamente, organizaba exposiciones en Alemania (“Ein Kürbis voll Asche” 1995, “Por la mar” 2011, ambos Hamburgo) y colaboraba con muchos artistas en Ibiza. Se ocupó del Centro Cultural de Sant Joan de Labritja desde el 93. Organizó un congreso euro-ecumenico sobre arte y religión para la Fundación Tecsal en Valencia (Editado: “Perspectivas del Arte cristiano del siglo XXI”).

Siempre se consideró un artista polifacético, y ciertamente lo era. Pintaba desde pequeño, dominando la acuarela y el óleo. olger E. Dunckel was born in 1953 in Wilhelmsburg, a borough in the port area of Hamburg. A great artist and very acclaimed on Ibiza, he deceased unexpectedly on June 18 last year. Dunckel was a vanguard artist who studied economy and marketing, drawing and philosophy. He took part in important formations of the contemporary music movement with multimedia performances throughout Europe (for instance on the Documenta 77 in Kassel). He came to Ibiza in the spring of 78 and switched to a rural way of life. He learned about agriculture, dry masonry and the local language. Henceforth, he resided on the island, speaking Ibicenco perfectly. In addition, he organised exhibitions here and in Germany (“Ein Kürbis voll Asche” 1995, “Por la mar” 2011, both in Hamburg) and worked with many artists in Ibiza. From 94, he managed the Cultural Centre of San Juan. He even helped organise a euro-ecumenical congress on art and religion for the Tesal foundation in Valencia (publication “Perspectivas del Arte cristiano del siglo XXI” [Perspectives of Christian Art in the XXI century]).

He always considered himself a versatile artist. and certainly he was. He painted from early on and mastered watercolours and oils. Moreover, he did collages, stone sculptures (one can be found in the restaurant Es Pins). Music played a prominent role for him, he composed, wrote poetry and theories on art and aesthetics (with Pepe Tauste he founded the “Nou Surrealisme Pitius” [new Pitiusan Surrealism]). He engaged in performance art, and above all he masterd digital photography, distorting the image with the camera as if he were painting, and without digitally retouching it afterwards on the computer. Holger was full of plans, some already in progress, others in a state of imagination. His wife, Claudia Scharapenko – muse, collaborator and helper in all his artistic projects – is left with all his artistic remnants that still await to be shown in a retrospective. No busco la belleza estética; más bien busco los mensajes que a través de la pintura afloran del subconsciente. Pintar para mí es como soñar de noche, cuando muchas imágenes se solapan alterando su significado corriente.

was born in England in 1976, but brought up in Ibiza, where I have spent most of my life. I paint as a way of discovering the unknown to me. I don´t search for beauty, I search for messages that come from the subconscious. I never know what I will paint, I just follow the shapes and find relationships between the elements. Son los residuos de la búsqueda – una especie de testimonio.

Las obras de Lila recuerdan la intimidad heterogénea que pueden evocar los famósos collages de Max Ernst, John Heartfield o Jacques Prévert, donde la destreza gráfica se asocia a ideas desenfrenadas, poéticas, absurdas e incluso políticas. Sus composiciones, tanto en 2D como en 3D, oscilan entre la sensibilidad y el humor corrosivo, siendo la técnica del collage el aliado perfecto de este proceso artístico, basado en la recuperación de objetos obsoletos y en el desvío de imágenes emanantes del excedente de nuestra sociedad iconográfica.

FORMENTERA, ¿DÓNDE ESTÁ EL ARTE?

“E

n Formentera levantas una piedra y aparece un fotógrafo o un pintor”. Son palabras de un conocido profesional de la fotografía de la Pitiusa menor. Es cierto, esta pequeña isla del Mediterráneo ha acogido y acoge a multitud de artistas: fotógrafos, pintores, escultores, músicos, escritores. Imagino que raíces y troncos de sabinas dormitan a la espera de unas manos que les saque de su letargo, o que el mar regala a diario las piezas de un puzzle para algún espíritu creador. Quizás sean las lunas de Formentera, esas lunas de insomnio, las que gestan ideas geniales, o acaso sea esta luz prodigiosa de nuestra isla que compromete a mirar diferente, la inspiración está en el aire, se respira. Todos somos creadores. ¿Quién no ha jugado a poner piedra sobre piedra ante la mirada atenta del horizonte?, ¿Quién no ha dibujado en la arena de una playa? La costa de Formentera está llena de composiciones que evidencian nuestra inherente necesidad de expresión, pero algunos hemos decidido convertir esa necesidad en una dedicación, y ¿Dónde está el fruto de nuestra labor?, ¿Dónde está el arte en Formentera? No es difícil encontrarnos en un paseo por el interior de la isla con obras de artistas afincados en Formentera desde hace años expuestas en los jardines de su propiedad. Esculturas en piedra, madera, que cobran vida ante la mirada curiosa del paseante, pero existe otro arte que no tiene tanta suerte, las viviendas y talleres de muchos otros creadores albergan trabajos que anhelan la mirada del espectador que los complete como obra de arte. Formentera ha crecido a un ritmo vertiginoso. El número de visitantes y residentes ha aumentado considerablemente, y debido a este hecho han aumentado asimismo los servicios, las infraestructuras, los locales de restauración, las plazas turísticas, los comercios. Paradójicamente el número de espacios que acogen exhibiciones artísticas ha menguado. Si hace unos años disponíamos de tres salas, Sa Nostra, La Caixa y la Sala d’Exposicions “Ajuntament Vell”, en la actualidad sólo esta última ofrece asiduamente exposiciones. Existe otro espacio de reciente creación, el Centre Gabrielet, centro artesanal y mercado payés, que una o dos veces al año presenta algún evento artístico. Por otra parte la Sala d’Exposicions “Ajuntament Vell”, dispone de muy poco espacio temporal para artistas residentes, ya que ha de ubicar en su agenda otros eventos como concursos o talleres y además está muy solicitada por creadores que no trabajan en la isla. En concreto en 2013 se realizaron 21 exposiciones en esta sala, de las cuales sólo cuatro correspondieron a artistas residentes, dos fueron colectivas de los mismos, siete de artistas no residentes, y el resto fueron exhibiciones de talleres, concursos, conmemorativas, etc.

Podemos encontrar arte en la calle, en el Mercado de arte de San Ferran y el Mercado de la Mola, y algún artista muestra sus obras en el salón o las habitaciones de un hotel. Eso es todo, sin duda insuficiente para la cantidad de creaciones “made in Formentera”. Las características de un entorno determinan la singularidad de su propuesta artística, y descubrirla nos enriquece culturalmente, pero ¿cómo encauzar su difusión? Es otra labor que nos compete, tratar de promocionar y divulgar nuestra obra. Empecemos por “La Ruta del Arte”. On the other hand, the Sala d’Exposicions “Ajuntament Vell” dedicates only very limited time to resident artists as its schedule has to allow for workshops, contests and shows of artists from abroad with whom it is very popular. For example, in 2013 twenty-one shows were held in this showroom, only four of them by resident artists, two were group shows of the same group, seven exhibitions of artists from abroad, and the rest were various workshops, competitions, commemorative events etc.

o quote a reknown photographer of the smallest Pitiusa: “In Formentera, you pick up a stone and a painter or a photographer appears.” True, this small Mediterranean island has long hosted an amazing number of artists of all kinds: photographers, painters, sculptors, musicians, writers. I visualize the dozing roots and trunks of sabinas in quiet anticipation of some hands to relieve them from their lethargy, or the sea providing creative spirits with new puzzle pieces on a daily base. Maybe, it is the Formentera moon, this moon of insomnia, which stimulates creative spirits. Or perhaps it is the prodigious light, which compels people to look at things in a diﬀerent way. Inspiration is in the air, you breath it. We are all creators. Who did not playfully put stone on stone under the watchful gaze of the horizon? Who has never drawn on the sand of a beach? Formentera’s coast is full of compositions that demonstrate our inherent need for expression, but some people have turned this necessity into a permanent occupation. And what about the fruits of this endeavour? Where do you find art in Formentera? On a walk over the island, you may easily find yourself faced with artworks which artists have exhibited in their gardens for years: stone or wood sculptures that come alive under the curious looks of passers-by. But other works of art do not get attention as easily. They remain hidden in workshops, studios and houses of their authors yearning for the attention of spectators to complete them as a work of art. Formentera has developed at a dizzying speed. Both visitors and residents have considerably increased in numbers, and therefore, the infrastructure was extended, tourist resorts, restaurants, shops, etc. increased. Paradoxically, the spaces for art exhibitions have diminished.

We may find some art on the streets, on the Mercado de arte de San Ferran and the craft market on “La Mola”, and some artists show their work in the hotel lounges or rooms. That's about all, and certainly insufficient for the remarkable number of creations ”made in Formentera”. To a certain extent, the characteristics of the environment determine the uniqueness of its artists. Discovering their creative proposals enriches us culturally, but what about promoting its diffusion? That’s another step to take on, trying to promote and diffuse our work. A few years ago, there were three exhibition rooms, Sa Nostra’s, La Caixa’s and the municipal Sala d’Exposicions “Ajuntament Vell”, whereas currently only the latter one oﬀers exhibitons continuously. In addition, there is a recently built space, the ‘craft centre and peasant market’ that once or twice a year hosts an artistic event.

ació en Japón en 1987. Estudió Bellas artes en la Universidad de Tohoku para Arte y Diseño en Yamagata, especializándose en cerámicas. Su primera exposición fue en Tokio. Desde poco tiempo reside en Ibiza, en la que vino a vivir por amor. La experiencia obtenida en el tiempo vivido aquí la llevó a crear su nueva obra llamada “Pureza” con la cual quiere transmitir la paz entre las personas y la naturaleza, un homenaje a lo bueno que encontró aquí en la isla.

rma started painting in 1989. After being a radio host at Holland’s "Cable One", she decided to dedicate all her time to art. Her figurative paintings got noticed by some of the Dutch magazines. Her first solo show took place in Rotterdam in 1990. After her move to Ibiza, canvas was replaced by pieces of wood she found in the island’s countryside. The wood, touched by time and weather, formed a great source of inspiration. Irma reanimated it with colour. Her pieces read like a vivid story. Since 1991 her objects found their way into several Spanish and Dutch galleries and were also shown in New York.

rma comenzó a pintar en 1989. Tras ejercer como locutora de la radio Holandesa Cable One, decidió dar un giro a su carrera profesional y dedicarse al arte a partir de ese momento. Sus pinturas figurativas fueron reseñadas por varias revistas holandesas. Su primera exposición en solitario se realizó en Rotterdam en 1990. Después de mudarse a Ibiza, el lienzo fue reemplazado por madera encontrada en el campo de la isla. La madera, tocada por el tiempo y el clima, fue una fuente de inspiración. Irma reanimó las maderas con color. Sus piezas se pueden leer como un cuento vivaz. A partir de los años 90 sus obras de arte han sido expuestas en varias galerías de España, Países Bajos y Nueva York.

The syllable is considered by Hindus as the primordial sound, origin and base of the majority of mantras. Anita Lois does the sign in a variety of materials, all of them recycled. They may be pieces found from nature or from the residues of civilization.

Her hand modelled ceramics show the traces of the hand and reflect the beauty of Ibiza, her inspiration. The nature of the island transforms into a sculpture or a simple tea bowl expressing the love for the unique things that surround us.

Representan figuras, animales e incluso abstracciones de diversos objetos. Su trabajo versa sobre lo cotidiano, moviendose entre el sueño y la realidad, llevándonos a veces al objeto infantil abandonado y olvidado pero que nunca quisimos perder o hasta una escena cómica y de caricatura. Lo que nos ofrece, es un paseo entre la seriedad de los recuerdos y la alegría que debería encerrar el futuro y lo desconocido.
