Peace of mind for your patients Temperature monitoring for direct-to-patient shipments Getting medication to patients in the right temperature range is critical for reducing unnecessary reshipments. Including a TransTracker® in outgoing medication shipments can help. These inexpensive, singleuse indicators monitor temperature exposures – letting your patients know at-a-glance whether medication has gotten too hot or too cold while in transit. Dottie Farfone, Chief Clinical Pharmacist, and Scott Farfone, Chief Operations Officer, achieved 100% compliance on their first application to URAC in 2015 and maintained 100% compliance during re-accreditation in 2019.

Building a new pharmacy operation from the ground up Dottie and Scott Farfone started Dottie’s Pharmacy in Charleston, SC in 2013, leveraging his business experience and her pharmacy background. At first, it was just the two of them, with Scott as technician and Director of Business Operations and Dottie as Chief Clinical Pharmacist. They quickly built their client base up by setting regular goals – first 10 patients, then 25, then 75, and so on. Their strategy worked. Today Dottie’s Pharmacy has been licensed from Virginia to Florida. Their team of technicians, along with seven full-time and part-time pharmacists, fill over 400 prescriptions a day. It wasn’t long before they decided to add a specialty focus to their business. “We knew we would need a niche to grow and thrive,” says Scott. “The doctors we were working with were asking us to look into carrying specialty medications,” adds Dottie. Moving into specialty pharmacy just made sense. They also knew to be successful in the space, they would need their URAC accreditation, which is what ultimately led them to investigate temperature monitoring solutions.

Cardinal Health: Innovating solutions to support medication adherence

Consumer expectations for convenient, on-demand services are increasing, driving the need for innovative, forward-looking solutions to meet those expectations and maintain critical relationships with patients. Cardinal Health is delivering digital solutions that will enable independent pharmacies to expand service offerings and improve healthcare outcomes.

Patients look to you for help with complicated medication regimens. Compliance packaging is great for patients, but it can be a time-consuming and costly to scale up. The average compliance fill can take up to 25 minutes, requiring you to shift focus to behind the counter, taking time away from your most critical role — connecting with and caring for patients. Additionally, machines that automate the process can cost more than $250,000. To balance the increased expectations of patients, you need solutions that can help improve patient medication adherence and simplify prescription fulfillment, providing more time for patient consultations.

Cardinal Health™ NavixRx™ Compliance Packaging is a new solution that allows pharmacies to outsource the costly, timely and cumbersome process of compliance packaging for patients taking two or more prescriptions daily. Eliminating both the cost and burden of compliance packaging provides time with patients to simplify complicated regimens and improve healthcare outcomes.

As patients look for a balance of convenient and personalized care, one of the best things a pharmacist can do for patients is help them with medication adherence. NavixRx™ Compliance Packaging provides both the time and scalability needed to meet the needs of patients and help pharmacies thrive into the future. NavixRx™ Compliance Packaging digitally integrates with your Pharmacy Management System allowing pharmacists to send compliance orders safely and easily to the Cardinal Health centralized fulfillment center. There, a team of on-site pharmacists use high-speed, automated central fill equipment to compliantly package prescriptions, by the dose, into a 30-day supply of strip packs. Over-the-counter medications and vitamins can also be added to the daily strip packs with the prescriptions to simplify medication regimens and improve outcomes. Multiple quality checks, including digital imaging, are performed at the Cardinal Health fulfillment center to confirm the contents of every package before sending the compliance strips back to the pharmacy for delivery to or pickup by the patient.

The 30-day supply of compliance strips is shipped unbranded to the pharmacy, allowing for the addition of pharmacy branding, before delivering to patients. Each pouch is clearly labeled with the patient’s information, contents, and time of day when the medication should be taken. NavixRx™ Compliance Packaging provides the tools and resources to help independent pharmacies thrive in today’s evolving healthcare market and continue providing personalized care to patients now and into the future. The speed of innovation and the evolution of consumer expectations has resulted in a watershed moment for how we address the needs of today, and how we prepare to meet the demands that tomorrow will bring. This includes helping pharmacies expand their consumer goods presence.

E-Commerce Storefront is a digital platform offered by Cardinal Health that expands your pharmacy online, providing a virtual endless aisle of products. With online shopping increasing at an exponential rate, E-Commerce Storefront gives patients access to more than 11,000 over-the-counter products for online purchase. And it provides an additional revenue opportunity without the additional inventory storage and management. The E-Commerce Storefront website is a cloud-based solution that integrates into the existing pharmacy website, providing a streamlined dashboard to reconcile orders. Available overthe-counter products are automatically processed through the pharmacy distribution center with the standard shipment. E-Commerce Storefront offers next-day delivery from the Cardinal Health warehouse to the independent pharmacy, along with marketing support from Cardinal Health. Customers want the convenience of virtual shopping and the high-touch, high-value relationship that their local pharmacist can provide. The ability to meet the needs of both gives pharmacies a competitive edge and allows them to have a significant impact on healthcare outcomes. Cardinal Health is in pursuit of even better delivering innovative solutions to help independent pharmacies unlock the highest level of performance, solve unique challenges, capitalize on opportunities ahead, drive value, and deliver high-touch service to patients.

Benefits of NavixRx™ Scalable As a central fill solution, NavixRx™ saves you and your team time, allowing you to focus more on patient care programs, including comprehensive medication reviews and vaccines. Simple NavixRx™ fits into your existing workflow and integrates with your Pharmacy Management System, eliminating complexity and streamlining your day-today operations. Reliable With a combination of automated machinery and a dedicated team of on-site pharmacists, the NavixRx™ fulfillment process gives you peace of mind. Affordable Eliminating your need to purchase high-cost automation equipment or find a way to fit compliance packaging into your staff’s day.

Case Study: The Road Map to Accreditation

C ASE ST U DY THE ROAD MAP TO ACCREDITATION Valisure Achieves Success With Innovatix INTRODUCTION

When patients pick up their prescription, they place their trust in the pharmacy that their medications are high-quality. But, unfortunately, bad batches and counterfeits still occur. Adam Clark-Joseph suffered serious complications caused by batch variability, which is why he pursued changing the industry. In 2017, Clark-Joseph partnered with David Light to establish Valisure, the first digital pharmacy to dispense chemically validated medications directly to consumers, ensuring medications met quality and consistency standards.

Deanna Akinbajo PharmD, RPH, MPH Chief Pharmacist ~ ValisureRX Pharmacy

Valisure achieves success with Innovatix.

Modeled after food labels that contain nutritional information, every prescription Valisure ships comes with a certificate of analysis listing important chemical properties analyzed at Valisure’s lab. They achieve this gold standard with cutting-edge technology that only dispenses medications that pass a rigorous screening process.

INTENDED OUTCOME

Valisure’s chief pharmacist, Deanna Akinbajo, PharmD, RPH, MPH, believed their growing company with a unique value proposition as a mail service pharmacy and analytical lab would benefit from a URAC Mail Service Pharmacy Accreditation. This achievement could increase higher payer reimbursements, demonstrate strict adherence to quality processes, and offer consumers even more evidence of patient safety. From the outset, Akinbajo's primary intent for these initiatives was to make Valisure even more patient-centric. “Valisure was unique from the start. Our corporate headquarters houses a pharmacy, mail-order prescriptions, and quality-testing lab,” Akinbajo stated. “We experienced early success with our offering. And the growth plan included expanding licensing beyond the existing 38 states and showing high standards to patients and payers by acquiring URAC accreditation.” Akinbajo told her team that they had to achieve a no deficiencies report if they were going for accreditation. Her mission of excellence went even further. She wanted to earn that seal within a tight time frame.

THE CHALLENGE

Accreditation is not a small initiative, it is rigorous, complex, and time-intensive. The growth-stage independent company already had staff wearing multiple hats when Akinbajo received approval to pursue accreditation. Valisure was also in the midst of major initiatives such as hastening the workflow of transferring prescriptions to mail order and increasing Valisure’s presence with PBMs and insurance networks. It quickly became apparent to Akinbajo and staff that accreditation was becoming a heavy lift on everyone’s shoulders. www.innovatix.com

Celebrating

10 YEARS Brad Jones, Founder & CEO of Retail Management Solutions Reflects on a Decade of Change and Looks at What’s Next for the Pharmacy Industry

How has the business of pharmacy changed in the last 10 years and how has RMS responded to those changes?

solution providers to help make that opportunity more accessible. One of our latest offerings that brings tremendous opportunity for pharmacy is integrated drug induced nutrient depletion recommendations. No one else is doing this. It can offer pharmacies additional revenue stream, and improved patient outcomes.

When I reflect about change over the last 10 years, it’s important to think about how it’s evolved over the last 30 or 40 years, because that’s also What role does point-of-sale play in the success of impacted how it’s evolved in the last 10. One of the big catalysts for change in the industry has been competition. Big box stores didn’t start growing pharmacies today vs. 10 years ago? until the end of the ‘80s and into the ‘90s and early 2000s. This happened On one side, today’s role is very much the same as it was 10 years ago. because since 1980 there have been more pharmaceutical drugs The same profit analysis and the same movement reports exist today. introduced into the market than in all of the years prior to that. Point-of-sale remains incredibly important because in order to This rapid expansion of prescription drugs, combined make the best business decisions, you have to do it with with more people than ever taking prescriptions means data, and point-of-sale provides that data. I think that there’s profit to be made, so more players entered You have to make sure the value of point-of-sale has arguably increased the market. that you are stocking selling because of other things going on in the industry.

Your margins on the back end are squeezed products, and you have to continue to evolve and innovate. — maybe that will get fixed, perhaps it won’t. You can’t change that. What you can do is focus This has been part of RMS’ model on the things you can change. Your front end is from day one. We’ve continually valuable real estate. Point-of-sale can help you identify products that aren’t selling to figure out innovated, being the first to market with solutions to help why or replace them with something that does. Of course, I mentioned drug-induced nutrient depletion All this means is that we have seen a shift from what we pharmacies run more recommendations earlier. These recommendations add always thought of as the traditional front end, carrying effectively.” incredible value and make it much easier for pharmacy everything from school supplies, to gifts and greeting cards, Grocery stores also started to carry virtually everything to do with OTC and the most common health and beauty items. While many pharmacies think of big box and Amazon as their biggest competition, grocery is a very big competitor. Not everyone takes a prescription medication, but everyone goes to the grocery store.

to a smaller apothecary front end with a focus on services. Luckily, we’ve seen the number of independent pharmacies become very stable, but the size of the pharmacy itself is decreasing. From the point-of-sale perspective, every product you sell counts. You have to make sure that you are stocking selling products, and you have to continue to evolve and innovate. This has been part of RMS’ model from day one. We’ve continually innovated, being the first to market with solutions to help pharmacies run more effectively. Starting with the first pharmacy system integrations and electronic signature capture solutions over 20 years ago, to today where we’re continually updating our point-of-sale solution and our more than 30 pharmacy system integrations to help independent pharmacies succeed. Some of the most important services we help with are curbside and home delivery which is becoming essential. E-commerce is also growing and offers an opportunity. We integrate with e-commerce

teams and the customer when integrated at the register.

Customer loyalty also adds another layer. Having all the information about your best customers offers another opportunity to engage. Pointof-sale today can help you engage with your customers and move away from transactional relationships.

What are some of the opportunities you see coming for pharmacies over the next 10 years? There are always opportunities. You have to remember with adversity comes opportunity, and right now, there’s a tremendous amount of adversity. There’s a lot of competition, and I know pharmacies are really worried about Amazon. I think that’s interesting because this is one place where pharmacies have an advantage. Yes, Amazon getting into the prescription business is scary. FA L L 2 0 2 1

They’re going to do it, and they’re going to do it well, but you have an opportunity to provide services they can’t. Most places aren’t going to be able to offer same-day delivery. So providing free same day or next day delivery whenever you can is a way to edge them out. We are also running into a time where you have some sort of e-commerce presence. We have an interface with Pointy that uploads your products to Google and lets people know where they can find the products they are looking for locally. It’s pretty awesome because it takes only a couple of minutes to set up in our system, there’s no ongoing maintenance, and it’s free. Of course, there’s no one size fits all here. There’s also opportunity in making your pharmacy a destination. In many communities, this can absolutely continue to be a successful business model. I do think there’s still opportunity in services like e-commerce and delivery, even in these cases.

How do you think the business of pharmacy will continue to change? I see two main paths that pharmacies will continue to grow their businesses, but both boil down to making your pharmacy a destination. One way is of course through front end. Unique products, gift items, local products, and such. We have many customers that do this successfully today, and will continue to evolve along that path. The other very important way is clinical services. They’re a great opportunity to increase sales. We’re seeing so many successful independent pharmacies take on services like medication synchronization, disease state management, point-of-care testing, vaccines, and more. These services make your pharmacy a destination, and they open the door to pick up some ancillary sales because you’re bringing convenience back into the mix.

How is RMS helping pharmacies prepare for this change? We’re continually evaluating every single clinical service and figuring out where we can play a part to make offering these services more accessible and just plain easier. Much like we did with nutrient depletion recommendations. We’ll continue to push the boundaries of what technology can do now and really focus on innovation in our products and services.

One of the biggest things we’re doing right now is CLIMB, our monthly webinar series. CLIMB stands for Care, Lead, Innovate, Motivate, and Balance. We started the series in 2020 and we bring pharmacists, industry experts, and really insightful speakers together to talk about topics important to pharmacy. We don’t talk about point-of-sale, we really just want to bring content and inspiration to pharmacies to help them respond to industry change, learn about new options and revenue streams, and find success with those options. It’s open to every pharmacy, and we’re really excited to continue to bring this content to the industry.

What role does pharmacy point-of-sale play in customer-centricity and profitability? Customer-centricity really does start with how you train your staff and how well they interact with patients. Point-of-sale gives you the tools and additional information to do a better job of that. Again, circling back to customer loyalty, if you’re embracing loyalty, it helps you recognize your best customers and your team can recognize and thank them. It also makes the checkout process simple, fast, and efficient which is really important. Also with nutrient depletion recommendations, we give you the opportunity to improve customer-centricity by helping patients feel better and have more success with their medications. And of course, this also ties into profitability. You’re selling something you wouldn’t otherwise have sold. Reporting capabilities also have close ties to profitability. Like identifying which departments are underperforming and need some change. You can improve your bottom line by simply making business decisions based on the reporting tools that are available to you through RMS’ system.

What is the most important action item you’d give to pharmacy owners? Change. Embrace it. Think about the pharmacy business today versus 10, 20, or 30 years ago, and you’ve seen the change happen already. You have to change. You have to adapt. About 80% of the Fortune 500 companies that existed in the early ‘90s don’t exist today. And then think about Amazon, which started as a bookseller. They changed and evolved because that’s what successful businesses have to do. We don’t need to be Amazon, but we do need to evolve. Either evolve, or you perish.

Founded in 1998 with a mission to help pharmacies understand and use technology-based tools to run a successful business, Retail Management Solutions is now one of the most respected POS providers in the industry. In 2020, RMS launched the CLIMB webinar series with the goal of helping all pharmacies become more profitable and customer centric. CLIMB stands for Care, Lead, Innovate, Motivate, and Balance. Join us on the second Thursday of each month to learn about topics from cash flow to drug-induced nutrient depletion, clinical services, and more. Learn more and register at www.pharmacyclimb.com.

Product Overview

RMS’ holistic approach is comprised of four major components. Software, hardware, training, and support. Each component plays an important role. n Software: RMS’ software solutions are comprehensive, scalable, flexible, and easy to use. Our software programs and over 30 pharmacy system integrations go beyond the basics of what you might expect from a POS system. We empower our users to work with the partners of their choosing and build a system that is tailored to their needs. There are a number of software capabilities built to help pharmacies grow profits and improve customer-centricity. •  Our NutriButler program embodies these goals by integrating supplement recommendations based on drug-induced nutrient depletion right into the transaction. Making it easy to help customers experience improved outcomes and increase supplement sales. •  WillCall by RMS saves time, and your wallet by using built-in functionality to batch multiple prescriptions into a single bag. Scan a single barcode at checkout for faster transactions and no left behind prescriptions. •  E-commerce solutions help increase your store’s online presence. Our integration with Pointy from Google uploads your products to your Google My Business page and displays them to shoppers searching for businesses and products in their area. Our integration with 24SevenCommerce allows you to easily manage your e-commerce stores.

•  RMS Delivery simplifies management of the home delivery process. This essential service is streamlined with easy transaction prep and offline electronic signature capture. •  SafeSign offers a way to capture signatures, using your customers smartphone. This contactless solution eliminates the need for a standard signature capture device and keeps your pharmacy on the cutting edge. RMS customers also have access to many more robust POS options. Integrated Customer Loyalty aids you in strengthening customer relationships, including advanced promotion and reward options that you can customize to suit your needs. You can also support charitable giving easily through any RMS system, strengthening your ties with the community you serve. Streamlining pharmacy operations is no small task. Point-of-sale applications extend beyond the customer interaction to help you run your business more efficiently. For pharmacies managing retail departments, RMS’ inventory management solutions open the door for advanced management of front-end products. Wholesaler interfaces allow automated price updates and a streamlined purchasing and receiving process. Integrated shelf labels keep your shelf prices and system prices in sync. And advanced product reporting can help you reduce overhead costs by identifying products that aren’t selling, enabling you to take a more agile approach to the products you carry and make the most of your retail space. A host of additional reports, both canned and customizable, are also available from cash management, to employee performance, to A/R balances, and more. RMS systems give you the data you need to drive important decisions and run a more profitable and efficient pharmacy. n Hardware: Our flexible hardware options mean that there’s an option for every scenario. Sales can be processed in many different ways to meet the unique needs of your pharmacy. Whether you need standard retail lanes, an option for drive-thru payments and signatures, curbside pickup solutions, or an easy way to track home deliveries, you can mix and match to create the perfect modern technology scheme. n Training: RMS’ training programs are tailored to the needs of your pharmacy. In addition to product training and expert implementation, customers can choose one of our outcome focused approaches. RMS Boost focuses on ways to make your pharmacy more profitable and the RMS Care training program puts an emphasis on customer-centricity. If you’re not sure where you’re at, the CLIMB checkup will help you evaluate and create a road map to reach your goals. n Support: Every RMS customer has access to our 24 hours, seven days a week support line staffed by a team of U.S. based support specialists. Automating Pharmacy Workflows

Are you getting the most out of your staff? Your staff could be focusing on other tasks that would make the pharmacy more efficient and productive.

Automate manual processes We automate the portions of your pharmacy that don’t require human contact including processing scripts from your PMS, printing labels, adjusting inventory, and sending scripts to autonomous blister card filling. DOSIS Systems helps reallocate pharmacy efforts by looking at total production volume and what could be offset by integrated software and automated filling. Software Integration

This type of pharmacy management increases total output without additional labor expenses.

We’d love to give you a demonstration!

Seeing is believing with the DOSIS System. We can give you a full demo of a working system so you can see for yourself the value of DOSIS workflow.

Dosis Systems — Reallocate Your Staff Efforts by Automating Manual Processes DOSIS Systems offers an autonomous workflow that partners with pharmacies to ensure improved efficiency, productivity, and bottom-line by automating over 75% of their production. When our partner pharmacies thrive, we thrive!

Company Background DOSIS Systems is seeing pharmacies all over the country improve their efficiencies in workflow, increase production volumes, and become more profitable. We have a proven track record of automating up to 80% of a pharmacy’s blister card volume. This includes pharmacies that are currently producing over 250,000 blister cards per month. In order to do this, we focus on each pharmacy’s needs. This allows us to offer the best solution for each partner pharmacy and increase their efficiencies where it matters most. Product Overview DOSIS Systems starts with customer care to better understand your pharmacy’s workflow and efficiencies. We then integrate a seamless system to match your needs using the flexibility of our technology; this includes custom integrations with your inhouse software. Knowing that your workflow and integrations are efficient, we introduce autonomous blister card towers that produce a 24/7 product that becomes the muscle of your growth. From this system, we can continue to analyze your production volume to ensure that you are getting the most out of DOSIS Systems and generating more revenue, causing you to thrive! Features & Options By customizing the capacity, features, and workflow integration, DOSIS Systems can make a tremendous impact in a wide variety of pharmacies. For example, a 55,000-cards-per-month pharmacy serving mental health patients is producing 35,000 cards per month in DOSIS automation while providing different filling and labeling formats for their various customer facilities. Another partner pharmacy is filling 250,000 cards per month for SNF patients with

DOSIS Systems filling over 200,000 cards every month (dailies and cycles). DOSIS automatically prints color-coded med-pass information on every label in this system based on the prescription data. A 48,000-card-per-month pharmacy is getting 37,000 cards per month via DOSIS Systems. It is actively converting away from the cycle-fill model because it is more efficient for them to fill on-demand using their integrated DOSIS automation. They have already eliminated pre-packs from their workflow “to reduce inventory and extra touches.” Using DOSIS Systems to automate filling cards and printing timepass labels, an 18,000-card pharmacy doubled in size without adding any staff on the floor. At another pharmacy doing 180,000 cards per month with 75% filled by DOSIS, the return-to-stock feature allowed them to efficiently track and re-use cards filled for scripts that are canceled before shipping. For a pharmacy filling 97,000 on-demand cards each month, the pre-pack manager feature extends the DOSIS Systems’ productivity by automatically restocking pre-pack card inventory after hours — DOSIS produces 58,000 cards each month, and the pharmacy is open less than 60 hours per week. Every month, DOSIS Systems fill over 2-million cards in pharmacies large and small; SNF, mental health, and corrections; dailies, cycles, pre-packs; with and without med-pass and auxiliary label information; single- and multiple-tablet per blister; calendarstart and straight-fill.

DMEPOS & Pharmacy Combined. That is Accreditation. Simplified. The Compliance Team One set of standards for DMEPOS and Pharmacy Accreditation saves time and money. Founder & CEO: Sandra C. Canally, RN Founded:

1994 Phone: (215) 654-9110 Address: 905 Sheble Lane, Suite 102 Spring House, PA 19477 Website: www.TheComplianceTeam.org

Company Background

n Delivering Exemplary Provider® Recognition for Over 25 Years The Compliance Team, Inc. (TCT) was founded in 1994 with the fundamental philosophy that accreditation should not be difficult or costly to achieve. It is a philosophy that providers immediately embrace when they start working with TCT and see how we eliminate the “minutia”. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach to standards, we have comprehensively streamlined them to deliver a far more simplified approach — with a lot less paperwork. At TCT it is all about your time and quality of patient care. Simplification does not mean compromising quality. The fact is our patientcentric standards are what set us apart and deliver on our promise to every DMEPOS and pharmacy provider: Accreditation. Simplified. While others will proclaim to be the “gold standard,” the Exemplary Provider Accreditation from TCT is a true designation that your facility delivers the very best in care to your patients. Our providers choose to be exemplary.

Product Overview

n Combining DMEPOS and Community Pharmacy Together — For You Most pharmacies, whether chain or independent, maintain a part B DME PTAN, allowing them to bill Medicare DMEPOS. To do that, accreditation is mandated. TCT recognizes the efforts that providers take to prepare for accreditation, and in maintaining our simplified approach, combines the DMEPOS requirements into our community pharmacy program. By accrediting your entire pharmacy and all the products and services you provide, it sets your pharmacy apart from the competition giving referral sources sound mind. Further, accreditation of your core pharmacy is a pathway to documenting star-ratings data to your plans. n A Full Suite of Pharmacy and DMEPOS Programs for Providers Beyond the combined community pharmacy and DMEPOS accreditation, TCT offers a full suite of programs and certifications to support all of your practice needs. Our DMEPOS sub-specialty programs include: • Complex Rehabilitation Technology Accreditation • Orthotics and Prosthetics Accreditation • Clinical Respiratory Services Accreditation • Patient-Centered Respiratory Home™ (PCRH™) Accreditation

Our pharmacy accreditation programs include: • CMS Approved Medicare Part B — DMEPOS • Community Pharmacy • Long-Term Care •  Sterile and Non-Sterile Compounding (USP Chapters 795, 797, and 800) • In-Store Clinic • Mail Order • TelePharmacy • Patient-Centered Pharmacy Home™ • CMS Approved Home Infusion Therapy (HIT) Our pharmacy certification programs: • Point-of-Care Testing Certification • Immunization Certification (Adult and Pediatric) • COVID-19 Vaccine Preparation and Oversight

Simplified Approach. Team Commitment to YOU.

The TCT approach is superior, but it is our team that truly makes the difference. The accreditation experience is often “deemed” laborious with the institutionalized accreditation organizations that insist on a onesize-fits-all approach. Our commitment to service is personal, genuine, and tailored to your facility’s needs. CASE STUDY

Patient-First Focus Leads to Growth Dottie Farfone, Chief Clinical Pharmacist, and Scott Farfone, Chief Operations Officer, achieved 100% compliance on their first application to URAC in 2015 and maintained 100% compliance during re-accreditation in 2019.

CASE STUDY Monitoring temperatures in patient medication shipments Dottie’s Pharmacy began using temperature indicators in their cold chain shipments as soon as they started in specialty pharmacy. “We used a different indicator initially,” says Scott. “But they weren’t accurate at all. We knew we wanted something better for our patients.”

The pharmacy opted to have a W-200 sensor installed in each of their refrigerators and freezers, says Dottie. “What we found almost right away was that regular refrigerators and freezers do not maintain a consistent enough temperature to store our medication.”

Then, at an industry event, Dottie and Scott met Katie Kraverath, Senior Business Development Manager at Temptime. Since then, they’ve used TransTracker® in their patient shipments. A single-use temperature indicator, TransTracker gives patients an easy-to-read visual cue of whether their medication has gotten too hot or too cold. In some instances, for example, shipments have been delayed in transit because of weather or holidays. “With the TransTracker, our patients can see immediately if their medication needs to be replaced,” says Dottie. Scott says the bottom line is that it’s all about the patients.

“We’ve never had a TransTracker fail us – and that’s what really matters. It just gives us and our patients peace of mind.” Shortly after they committed to specialty pharmacy and began using TransTracker, Dottie’s Pharmacy moved into a new, larger space. “Specialty medications can cost $40,000 or $50,000 for a 30 day supply,” explains Scott. “We needed a way to make sure we were following manufacturer instructions and keeping them in the appropriate temperature range, so they remained effective for our patients.” Added to this, URAC requires pharmacies working toward accreditation to verify they are monitoring medication temperatures onsite as well as in shipping. On Katie’s recommendation, Dottie and Scott chose the W-200 – a long-range wireless sensor designed to monitor temperatures and relative humidity in production and storage areas as well as refrigerators and freezers. A free mobile app helps them set preferences such as alarms, while a web-based dashboard gives them an at-a-glance view of the status of all their devices in real time. The pharmacy then receives immediate alerts should any of the sensors record temperatures that exceed the programmed limits.

CASE STUDY “Beyond URAC accreditation, we’re committed to making sure our packouts do what we need them to – not just that they’re performing in a laboratory setting,” explains Dottie. To do that, they send packages to family members in the different shipping zones they cover and include the M-300 in each package. They can then view the data to see how the packages performed during transit. “We spend a lot of money on cold chain shipping,” says Scott. “We have to know our packouts are effective.

W-200 electronic temperature and humidity sensors monitor the pharmacy refrigerators and freezers

Verifying medication package performance Another component to URAC accreditation is Package Performance Qualification (PPQ) testing, which confirms that pharmacy packaging for patient shipments is keeping medication at the appropriate temperature range. To earn accreditation, pharmacies must provide documentation for bi-annual or seasonal testing on packouts. This includes testing for packouts used to ship frozen, refrigerated and room temperature medication for each different geography.

“Temptime was an important part of our accreditation. All the reports are easy for us to generate and easy for URAC to read; they loved them.” After consulting with Katie, Dottie’s Pharmacy chose Temptime’s M-300 for their PPQ testing. The M-300 is a portable, Bluetooth®-enabled, reusable sensor that monitors and records temperature data. Like the W-200, the M-300 comes with a free mobile app to program preferences including alarm limits and reading intervals as well as a web-based dashboard to view data and run reports.

End-to-end temperature monitoring for URAC accreditation As a result of all the thoughtful steps they took, Dottie’s Pharmacy achieved 100% compliance on their first application to URAC and earned their accreditation. The pharmacy also earned its reaccreditation in 2019. “The beauty is how well these solutions all work together,” says Scott. For example, when the pharmacy lost power in the middle of the night during hurricane season – they were alerted by the W-200 sensor that temperatures were rapidly decreasing but still safe. This gave them time to transport medication to a powered refrigerator. “We used the M-300 to confirm that the medication stayed in range while we were moving it,” says Dottie. They also put the M-300 in the backup fridge with the medication as an extra precaution. “Knowing when there’s a problem is critical,” says Scott. “Getting alerts during off-hours has saved us.” The product is superior, but Dottie and Scott agree that it’s the customer service where Temptime really excels. “When we have an issue or a question, we know we can reach out and get the answers we need right away,” says Dottie. “We’re very busy; we can’t sit around waiting on hold,” Scott adds. “The fact that you can get someone on the phone immediately is important to us.” Dottie agrees, saying she sends anyone asking who they should turn to for temperature monitoring right to Temptime.

LONG-TERM CARE DELIVERY/ B ACK-UP PHARMACY SERVICES Q & A

& Q A

Kevin R. Fearon, R.Ph., MBA, FASCP, President ASCP

Q. Does Absolute Pharmacy use a delivery service or backup services? Why?

Q. How quickly is your back-up able to respond to a request?

Absolute Pharmacy is open 24/7 so most stat deliveries are fulfilled in-house at our pharmacy. We do have an extensive network of retail, institution, and hospital pharmacies that are used as needed to fulfill orders that are urgent, backordered drugs, and/ or unplanned events. Our private delivery service coordinates all of the pick-up and drop off activities. Our system provides layers of redundancy and extends our internal resources to be in the strongest position to always provide medication timely.

Back-up pharmacies are just that — a back-up source. They have their own priorities and may not be able to complete the transaction in a timely manner. The end result could be a delay of the medication being delivered to the patient. Pharmacies need to carefully understand the waiting and delivery times before selecting a back-up service.

Q. What are the benefits of having delivery/

backup services implemented?

The benefits of a backup network is that it provides depth to a pharmacy’s ability to provide medications regardless of the timing or product requested. The pharmacy has many methods to ensure delivery, including if a facility is in need of medication quickly because of medical, survey, or family concerns, having a backup pharmacy that could be 10 minutes away from a nursing facility but two hours away from the pharmacy allows a faster turnaround time. Another example is if weather shuts down roads, having something proximate to the facility facilitates easier and efficient delivery.

Q. Does your pharmacy have software to permanently store an electronic delivery manifest on a real-time basis? There are many benefits of software that immediately notifies the pharmacy of delivery and is retrievable by date, Rx #, and location of delivery in the event that a problem occurs. Caregivers and patients often are unaware or do not know the medication has been delivered and a confirmation to the pharmacy allows for management and assurance of the medication being available. Additionally, this record is very useful with pharmacy audits.

Q. Have you taken into consideration that senior

pharmacies have special formularies that retailers might not have? Senior drug usage often uses specialized drugs such as liquids, low dosage, or uncommon inventory. Back-up pharmacies many times do not have these geriatric or unusual dosage forms in stock. We typically prefer high-volume pharmacies that have a robust inventory. Pharmacies may need to have a plan on how to remedy locating senior medications from a reliable supplier.

Q. Will I receive unusual requests from nursing facilities to special deliver medication? Nursing facilities are often busy places, where care is handed off to other nurses, agencies, both overworked and understaffed. You should anticipate emergency requests for refills, OTC, and non-urgent orders. The nurses are under regulatory compliance pressure, family expectations, and management rules. You will need to understand the expectations so that there is satisfaction at both ends. It’s so important to be a consummate educator and problem solver as the stream of requests occur.

Q. What are common drugs or emergencies that

need to be expressed to the LTC?

Pain medications are difficult to coordinate legal requirements with any third party, so the pharmacy needs to have a method of providing control drugs. New admissions are common requests by facilities that need to have medications immediately available.

Q. Who pays for the expensive delivery? This is a difficult problem — no one wants to pay. The nursing facilities goal is to have medication available. Pharmacies need to be prepared to incur the delivery cost and pre-arrange the financial expense.

Q. What about security and reliability of unknown drivers picking up medications and having access to healthcare settings? We prefer delivery services that concentrate on healthcare and are trained in procedures. Our drivers are assigned to our routes and locations and get to know our facilities. They become an extension of the pharmacy. We have tracking methods that allow us to know where the driver and medication are in terms of location and delivery status. The drivers have a dress code that helps facilities recognize them.

Q. A hybrid approach to a delivery service is

more robust, controls costs, and often is the quickest method of delivery. Can you elaborate on what this model could look like? A hybrid model has multiple layers. The first layer is 24/7 availability. We do not use an answering service so phone calls and requests are received by employees at any time or day (inclusive of holidays). Being a 24/7 pharmacy, delivery of most stat medications will come directly from the pharmacy.

The second layer is a good emergency kit system located at the facility. The kit should be regularly updated with the facility’s most common medications and checked for stock and valid expiration dates. Medication storage can be in well-designed plastic boxes or in electronic cabinets that interface with the pharmacy. Lastly, use the backup service network as needed if the other two resources cannot fulfill a medication need.

Q. What about using electronic cabinets? There are many cabinets on the market and varying degrees of functionality and price. They usually are subject to regulations on contents, security, and process. They are expensive but do offer immediate patient medication availability. The higher-end cabinets are interfaced with the pharmacy to grant access to medications, matching patient profiles, billing, and replenishment with each transaction. Work with vendors to finance and learn more about their applications.

Q. How do you see LTC delivery and back-up pharmacy services evolving in the future? I think technology will continue to evolve and “smart kits” will predominate the industry. Electronic Health Record system should help the industry transfer information seamlessly to help providers have more accurate information on a real-time basis and avoid gaps of med availability. I see e-mars populating and synching the supplies with pharmacy and medication orders being sent on a “just-in-time” basis.

LONG-TERM CARE DELIVERY/ B ACK-UP PHARMACY SERVICES Q & A

Antibiotics, hypertension, NSAID, allergy, and other irritable conditions affecting a person’s comfort, are also common requests and should be anticipated.

Company Background

Advanced Pharmacy Solutions has been an innovative leader in remote automated dispensing for more than 20 years. APS has partnered with skilled nursing facilities and assisted living communities providing AP Passport, the industry leader in remote, on-site, automated dispensing which packages medications on-site in advance of each nursing shift. APS is a “best in class” technological advancement that dramatically enhances patient care, saves valuable nursing hours, provides significant cost containment, and improves the overall efficiency of a care facility. As the senior care environment transitions to value based metrics, there is an increased need for state-of-the-art technological solutions to enable improved patient care through enhanced pharmacy quality, nursing efficiency in the performance of medication management tasks, and the elimination of drug waste for all payers.

Product Overview

The APS Ecosystem, a design based on years of experience and with guidance from our customers, is a user friendly (just four clicks), state-ofthe-art remote automated dispensing system designed for long-term and post-acute care facilities. The APS Ecosystem is comprised of the APS 250 — the primary dispensing device with capacity of 250 medications, the APS Mini — a smaller dispensing device designed to dispense “as needed” pain medications in a post-acute unit, and the APS Vault — containing emergency unit-of-use medications. Facilities adopting the APS Ecosystem will experience greater nursing efficiency, increased patient satisfaction, improved medication availability, improved pharmacy accuracy, and reduced medication costs. The ecosystem will package the medication pass in patient specific multi-dose envelopes just hours in advance of the scheduled medication administration, improving nursing efficiency. On-site access to “as needed” pain medications, antibiotics, and other key medications improve patient satisfaction, reduce unscheduled re-hospitalizations, help solidify referral source relationships, and improve star ratings.

The APS Ecosystem connects seamlessly with your pharmacy and electronic medical record, allowing speedy and accurate dispensing according to the latest physician order. Access to medications quickly when there are order changes or new orders allows your care team to ensure a patient never misses a dose and their care is not compromised due to a pharmacy delay.

Advanced Technology to Provide Superior Care

APS customers are assigned a dedicated APS Concierge to be their onestop point of contact from initial onboarding to ongoing customer care to ensure they achieve all of the benefits of APS for their organization. Your APS Concierge manager will coordinate the following services for your organization: • A dedicated team to transition your facility to the APS Ecosystem. • Clinical specialists assigned to you for go-live and on-going support. •  24-hour live support, providing quick and simple solutions. •  Includes real-time video monitoring of your APS Ecosystem and necessary equipment maintenance to keep your APS Ecosystem performing perfectly.

The APS Ecosystem includes the latest data-management technology used to generate real-time customized and standard analytical reports that help you maximize savings and improve care. The analytics provide you with deep insights into all facets of your organization — from medication utilization to regulatory compliance. Primarily, the analytics track medication utilization by drug type, patient, and facility, and enable you to predict utilization trends, physician prescribing patterns, and formulary compliance. They also help you cut costs by streamlining accounting and improving your financial management and bottom-line performance. Our team of experts will work with you to design analytical reports customized to the needs of your care facility, taking into account specific needs, including your operating and regulatory environment. CAS E S TU DY THE ROAD MAP TO ACCREDITATION Valisure Achieves Success With Innovatix INTRODUCTION

www.innovatix.com

CAS E S TU DY Valisure also entered the accreditation realm as COVID-19 arrived in the U.S., making Valisure an essential business where continuity for their patients mattered more than ever. “If Valisure was to meet its goal, we couldn’t just hope that everything would work out. We had to be all in at 100 percent to achieve 100 percent,” said Akinbajo. The challenge for Valisure involved knowing when to seek outside counsel. For Akinbajo, it meant engaging an accreditation firm now to keep all initiatives moving forward. “Hiring a firm was a big deal and a big ask of the founders. I appreciated their trust in my decision that this was the route to take,” said Akinbajo. The next challenge for Valisure was finding the right firm.

THE DECISION TO GO WITH INNOVATIX

The interviews to find the consulting firm that excelled in URAC accreditation started with Akinbajo asking her peers in the pharmacy industry, specifically those in mail order. “One name kept coming up, and that was Innovatix. Their strong reputation in the industry, and that of their parent company, Premier, Inc., proceeded them,” said Akinbajo. “My cold call to them ended up being the best call I could make for our pharmacy. From the minute they put me in contact with Jennifer Valentine, I felt reassured Valisure could attain our no deficiencies goal.” The team at Valisure conducted additional due diligence and assessed other firms, but they kept coming back to Innovatix. The decision proved right at every stage because they exceeded expectations on each criterion. The essential requirements include: 1) Put Patient Care First: The number one priority for Valisure was that the patient came first. When searching for a firm, Akinbajo needed to hear how Innovatix would conduct its program with existing operations and patient care initiatives. Leaders of the Innovatix Accreditation Advisory Services team presented a plan based on Valisure’s imperatives and resources and detailed how each step would work with each department given existing workloads. Innovatix’s initial spot-on review of Valisure’s differentiating operations and analytical lab for patient safety immediately instilled trust and confidence that only grew throughout the engagement. 2) Want Budget-Friendly Pricing: Pricing was a primary reason Valisure went with Innovatix. There also couldn’t be any cost surprises down the road. Innovatix was true to their word and met Valisure’s budget and tight time frame. The budget-friendly price also came with Innovatix’s A team, who delivered at every milestone. “We gave them our expectation, and Innovatix achieved it. They also put forth accreditation daily and monthly goals and made sure we met them. Innovatix was invested in our success. And it wasn’t an overlord situation but rather like working with long-time friends who wanted the best for you.” 3) Make the Process Easy and Flexible: Accreditation is known for its intensity and difficulty. Valisure requested options in terms of capabilities. Innovatix delivered department-specific project plans that Akinbajo viewed as attainable. The team came to Connecticut and demonstrated its turnkey, pivot-on-a-dime abilities. This flexibility would prove invaluable as shortly after their meeting, COVID-19 started shutting down the country. Beyond the immediate affinity between the two organizations, they both understood that a whole new level of difficulty would occur with conducting services remotely.

www.innovatix.com

“Innovatix customized a solution for Valisure. They put creativity into a dry and daunting process,” said Akinbajo. “The team put us at ease from the very first zoom and always made themselves available to us. They even created a color-coded spreadsheet of everything I needed to submit. We followed the colors and met the time frames. It was the definition of concierge service.” 69

CAS E S TU DY 4) Provide the Gold Standard: From start to finish, the team at Innovatix went above and beyond to ensure Valisure met the stringent requirements of URAC. They aligned standards and processes against accreditation measures. The tools that proved vital entailed the performance programs, reporting metrics, and risk mitigation strategies. “Even remotely, Innovatix’s hands-on and helpful approach imparted confidence that the copious amounts of documentation met the necessary benchmarks,” said Akinbajo. 5) Ensure Readiness: Throughout the preparedness time frame, Valisure and Innovatix completed vast amounts of work remotely. The Innovatix team kept Valisure on track with monitoring the required staff, resources, and expertise required by payers and manufacturers. “Prescriptions require precision, and our URAC documentation and submittals needed the same exactness,” said Akinbajo. “Innovatix had everything prepared, in order, and organized. Valentine and the team would put forth the policies to review and address. We completed the policies and went into the simulated review fully prepared for a successful accreditation survey."

THE RESULTS

“We achieved an accreditation result of no deficiencies. Nothing detracted from our top rating, not a pandemic or expansion plans,” said Akinbajo. “Valisure could not have achieved all we did in 2020 without Innovatix, who was with us every step of the way.” Beyond accreditation efforts, the partnership with Innovatix produced a tighter organizational alignment and enhanced patient care. The process started in December 2019 and coincided with the first news of COVID-19, when access to medications took on a whole new meaning for everyone. However, despite a pandemic, in November 2020, Valisure earned the symbol of excellence from URAC, representing a commitment to quality and patient safety. Accreditation reinforces even more quality measures. URAC accreditation now provides additive evidence to further support Valisure as a leading authority in identifying and addressing medication quality issues because of their high-precision analysis of prescriptions. In 2021, Express Scripts contracted with Valisure, accomplishing a key goal of expanding its customer base. “Our team became so excited about the new PBM contract because it allowed us to promote the news, resulting in new inquiries. One of the biggest things we are now experiencing is that patients from large PBMs are seeking certified medications,” said Akinbajo. “The work with Innovatix strengthened our pharmacy’s reputation and raised our profile as an analytical lab."

THE CONCLUSION

From analyzing batches to staffing their 24-hour telephone customer service line, Valisure maintained superior service and operational excellence during a pandemic while seeking accreditation for the first time. Valisure’s ability to succeed during a tumultuous time directly correlates with hiring Innovatix and adhering to its program. “I wouldn’t change a thing with our partnership with Innovatix and choosing them as our advisory firm,” said Akinbajo. “Without Innovatix, I don’t know if we could have done everything we did in 2020. The team alleviated so much of the URAC preparation burden. Their support allowed us to survive and thrive as an essential business and maintain our number one goal of serving our patients.”

The Pyrosate® Kit is available in sensitivities of 0.03 EU/mL, 0.125 EU/mL, and 0.25 EU/mL, in both 10-pack and 30-pack formats. In addition to research and water testing, Pyrosate® is ideal for dialysis centers, compounding pharmacies, and pharmaceutical and medical device companies.

Performing the Test

The Pyrosate® kit is a rapid gel-clot test that contains a 2λ* endotoxin tube (PPC) matched to the sample (SPL) tube for each sensitivity. This feature is unique to the Pyrosate assay. The endotoxin tube (PPC) assures that the sample does not interfere with the test, ruling out false negatives. Pyrosate is formulated to eliminate false positives due to (1g3)-ß-D-glucans. This endotoxin specific reagent does not require additional blocking buffers.

Reconstitution Pyrosate® is reconstituted directly with the sample by adding 0.5 mL to the sample tube (SPL). After approximately 60 seconds of gentle mixing, 0.25 mL is transferred to the endotoxin tube (PPC). The lot-specific incubation time at 37±1°C is given on the Certificate of Compliance. Stability Pyrosate® is stable at room temperature and does not require refrigeration for shipping or storage. Product Applications • Hemodialysis • Water and Water Systems • Filter Industry • Research • Final Product Release Product Benefits • Shorter Assay Time • Endotoxin Specific • No Dilutions Required • No Refrigeration Required • Matched Positive Product Control * λ (lambda) is the lowest concentration of endotoxin to cause a positive test result under standard conditions.

Company Background

Founded in 1992, Return Solutions is one of the most experienced and trusted reverse distributors in the industry. Over the last 30 years, we have formed relationships with group purchasing organizations across the country and are currently recommended by over 25 buying groups representing 20,000+ pharmacies. In 1998, we became the first returns company to issue checks to our customers for credit, and since then have paid customers over $1 billion.

Product Overview

Reclaim time spent tracking pharmaceutical return credits so you can focus on patient care and running your business. The OneCheck Select program optimizes the reimbursement process, consolidating credit into one check and ensuring that you receive credit quickly — within as few as 10 days if you choose our 10-Day Pay program, or within no longer than 90 days with our most economical option. Credit values are listed on the check stub, so you know exactly how much you have received from each manufacturer. Our all-inclusive fee, including shipping, CI-CV processing, destruction of non-returnable items, and extensive reporting available on our website, is a fixed percentage of your returnable product value and is deducted from the check we issue to you, so there are no hidden fees or surprise charges. Choose from our comprehensive on-site service and let our experienced representatives handle every aspect of your return or use our easy and economical web-based mail-in service if you prefer to complete your returns on your own time.

Capital Inventory Inc. — Accurate and Dependable Pharmacy Inventory Services

Our decades of experience working specifically with pharmacy inventory make us uniquely qualified to provide accurate valuations through a streamlined process. Our clients can trust that we will be transparent, supportive, and reliable in every interaction.

William Straub Sr. President: Shannon McArthur Founded: 1979 Employees: 75 Toll-Free Phone: (800) 345-8049 Phone: (770) 928-7202 Fax: (770) 928-2287 Address: 9725 Main Street Woodstock, GA 30188 Website: www.capitalinventory.com

Company Background

Capital Inventory, Inc. was founded by William Straub Sr. during the late 1970s in Alexandria, VA. The company relocated to Georgia in the early 1980s and serves the entire nation, including Alaska, Guam, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands from its office in the Atlanta, GA area. Capital Inventory, Inc. has been in business for over 42 years, providing service to thousands of hospitals, university medical centers, regional medical centers, and health systems. Capital Inventory exclusively services hospital, outpatient, specialty, and infusion pharmacies. Our inventory experts are in pharmacies daily and year-round. Employees of Capital Inventory are employed full-time and receive complete benefit packages. Employees undergo extensive and continuing education including pharmacy practices, drug information, and HIPAA regulations. You can be confident and secure as all of Capital Inventory’s employees undergo an extensive background check including felony, misdemeanor, and sex offender. Our employees are 12-panel drug tested regularly and at a minimum of twice a year. All testing is conducted by third-party specialty companies. Additionally, employees are required to be current with all vaccinations including yearly Influenza and TB testing.

Product Overview

Our people are the difference. Our teams speak “NDC fluently” and understand the dynamics of pharmacy operations. The physical inventory process is seamless and unobtrusive as team leaders strategically place the team in locations throughout the pharmacy to ensure accuracy and efficiency. Before completion of an inventory service, our teams actively work with finance and/or independent auditors while on-site to validate the accuracy of the inventory data collected. Beyond the physical inventory, the data is then received, analyzed, and formatted into a report that includes all pertinent information to allow for accurate and precise analysis of the inventory data. Let our team of experts provide your next inventory valuation with precision, accuracy, and confidence.

n What to Expect on Inventory Day Upon arrival, the Capital Inventory team will be introduced to the pharmacy and staff. Our team leader and a pharmacy representative will map the pharmacy and its respective areas. Team members are then assigned to the designated areas and proceed entering each NDC number and QTY into our proprietary hand-held data gathering computer. Once all areas are completed, the raw inventory data is then transmitted to an independent team for review and analysis. n What to Expect Post Inventory Day Items will be priced according to GPO/Wholesaler Cost Data and Direct Purchase/Secondary Wholesaler Cost Data. Upon review the data will be adjusted, compiled, and valuated. Finally, the inventory data will be delivered electronically as an Excel file. n What to Expect After Receipt of Inventory Data If it is identified that adjustments are needed, we have an easy stepby-step way to apply the indicated changes. When submitted, the adjustments can be made and returned within 24-48 hours. Unlike other companies that do not allow adjustment to the inventory data, we will adjust the data as requested to ensure the final value is a true representation of the on-hand inventory.
