LAYERS:
South Africa has a rich history from the political to the physical landscape. Drawing from the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden’s Master Plan, this project details the design for the center zone and Mediterranean climate South Africa. With a rich landscape South Africa is not just lion, rhinos and giraffes, but a culture of layers, from the political to the physical. Designed to not only house animals in their natural environment this portion of the zoo layers in plant communities from the Botanical Garden, culture from South Africa’s past, present and growing future and lastly a concern for the existing property ecology. Some of the biggest factors that influenced the design were the drastic changes in existing grade, South Africa’s history such as (the Apartheid) and the existing riparian corridor that divides the site.
