Member Of The Month

It’s a new month already! Crazy how time passes when we are mostly stuck at home. It’s time to announce the member of the month for May. Not only was she active throughout all her time in Key Club, we can tell that she puts a lot of effort into her work. Her efforts are noticed and without f urther ado, Rumla Irfan is our member of the month for May.

Happy Birthday Key Club!

Hello everyone! On May 7th, 2020, D8 celebrated Key Club’s 95th birthday by creating a montage. Can you believe it?! It has been 95 years since Key Clubbers first started making change. I hope to have another year of exciting events and FUNdraisers with all my Key Clubbers. - Michelle đ&#x;‘‹đ&#x;?źđ&#x;˜‰

Virtual March Of Babies Step Up March of Dimes this year was unique: it went virtual. This year’s March of Dimes, Key Clubbers marched from home. Thanks to the help of Charity Miles, we were able to continue moving toward a cause: a safer world for babies. For those who don’t know, March of Dimes was created to advocate for safer childbirth. Under normal circumstances, two babies die every hour in the US, and about every 12 hours a woman dies as a result of complications from pregnancy. With this coronavirus outbreak, the chances grow even worse as medical staff are stretched thin, and it’s a threat to even go outside. I wasn’t able to go out much, so much of the miles I did was from home. Whether it be running or walking, every mile I do, I know that it’s a step closer to raising awareness. -

Note Of Hope Today, we are faced with a pandemic: Covid-19, which has affected thousands of lives. During this time, families want to make sure that they are safe and healthy. This may be especially worrying for new mothers and their babies who are seeking for the best ways to stay safe. Although Covid-19 has brought a feeling of uncertainty, it is important to thank doctors who are one of the most essential workers and who risk their own lives to save the lives of others in their communities. I wrote a Note of Hope, because it is important to show appreciation for healthcare workers and their extensive efforts. Showing our appreciation could also motivate them, knowing that we are thankful for their services in treating sick patients and informing people on how to stay necessary precautions to stay healthy. Doctors are going to work everyday to help families feel hope and security for the future. -

Teacher Appreciation Week For teacher appreciation week I wrote a thank you email to my coach, the girl’s track team coach Mr. Boccuzza. He played a big role in track keeping us safe and also entertained. Even though sometimes he makes us run in the raining weather or tells us to run the annoying mile repeats, at the end of the day he still makes us giggle. There’s time where he’s really serious, which makes me scared but there’s also times where he’s just like a friend that makes me laugh. Just transferring to Bayside my sophomore year made me scared because everything was new. But joining track, Boccuzza made me feel welcomed. I appreciate every moment of track, the hardship, the laughter, everything. Thank you Boccuzza! -

LLS Fundraiser

I thought it was important to donate because by donating money, I could help someone who is suffering. Since I had the ability to donate, I took the opportunity to. LLS is a non-profit organization that funds lifesaving blood cancer research around the world. I am so glad that I donated and I hope others can also donate, even if it’s just a little bit of money. -

I wanted to join this campaign because I am very passionate about helping others and i’m aware how it feels losing someone. I saw this opportunity to raise money for blood cancer and took it to help as many families as I can. I believe that every step can make a huge difference and that every donation goes a long way. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) helps to fund lifesaving cancer research and services for patients battling blood cancer. Whether it be a form of acknowledgement, spreading awareness or a donation, anything helps to change the lives of many people. A simple action you take is a difference you can make! -

May Divisional The May Divisional went better than our first zoom meeting. Afterall, we didn't really know what was going to happen and I heard it in concept but never in reality. We had the perks of being a normal divisional with the fact it was virtual. I met many old friends during the divisional from other schools such as Francis Lewis and Cardozo. It was nice to see that they were able to be there and able to join the divisional. Overall, the divisional was surprisingly normal even with all the obstacles that would stop it from being so. -
