Relay for Life takes place at the University of Miami annually on the Foote Green. Students, faculty and local businesses set up booths around the Foote Green, which creates a track. Participants can either walk the track in support or sell items at their designated booth. In 2015, the committee met its goal to raise $40,000, and in 2016 has a goal of $45,000. Relay for Life is Friday, April 7, from 4 p.m. to midnight.
Who We Are

Felicia Knaul to Speak at 16th Annual Relay for Life CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Felicia Knaul, Ph.D., breast cancer survivor and wife of University of Miami President Julio Frenk, speaks at the University of Miami's Relay for Life on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 8 p.m. on the Foote Green. Knaul looks forward to sharing her survivor experience with Relay participants. Knaul is a researcher and advocate for cancer around the world. She founded a Mexican nonprofit organization, Cáncer de Mama: Tómatelo a Pecho, which aims to spread awareness and help with curing breast cancer in Latin America. “Reaching out to the student life is what gives me energy, and I look forward to engaging with the students at Relay for Life,” she said. “We all want to cure cancer, and it’s events like these that make that goal seem attainable.” Knaul also plans to lead the opening survivor lap, accompanying 30 survivors. With each lap, she aims to speak to each survivor, exchange stories and take photos. Relay for Life is an annual event that raises money for the American Cancer Society. The University of Miami has hosted this event for the Coral Gables community for 16 years. Students, faculty and local businesses set up fundraising booths around the Foote Green, which creates a track. Each booth sells items like burritos, pizza, smoothies and more. UM’s Relay for Life Wants You!
What is Relay for Life?
Tell Me More • Relay for Life is an event that raises money for the American Cancer society • Clubs and organizations set up booths that line a track. Team members walk that track in honor of friends and family who have been affected by cancer • At UM, the Relay committee is an organization that provides students with friendships and support • Our committee is dedicated to planning a fabulous Relay for the Coral Gables community and fundraising as much as possible • The committee works throughout the year to organize the main event and fundraisers
Tell Me Even More • Relay for Life is the biggest fundraiser that the committee plans. What are the smaller fundraisers you may ask? • The committee is infamous for holding a pie-in-theface fundraiser on campus, where anyone passing by can pie a committee member in the face • Just this semester, the committee has held fundraisers at: • California Pizza Kitchen • Chill-N • Chipotle • Mellow Mushroom
Why Should I Relay?
Here’s Why • Relay for Life participants decide to Relay for so many different reasons • It may be because you lost someone you care about to cancer and you’re there in his or her memory • It may be because a friend lost someone close to them to cancer and you’re there for support • It may be because someone you love just got diagnosed with cancer and you’re there on his or her behalf • It may be because someone close to you has beaten cancer and you’re there in his or her honor • It could even just be in honor of anyone affected by cancer
You Make an Impact • With your help, we raise money to directly help cancer patients in so many ways • The American Cancer Society assists with: • Research for cancer patients • Housing for patients who need to relocate • Transportation to and from doctor visits • Bills for patients who haven’t been able to work • Information and support for patients and those at risk • Exercise programs that help patients regain strength during and after treatment
Volunteer Opportunities
The Committee • Along with planning Relay for Life and smaller fundraisers, the committee does even more • The committee meets every other week in the fall and every week in the spring to brainstorm fundraising, recruitment and general event ideas • Committee members also attend team bonding events to get to know their fellow Relayers • The committee is made up of seven subcommittees: • Activities and entertainment, fundraising, luminaria, mission advocacy, public relations, retention and recruitment, and sponsorship
Join the Committee • Applications for UM’s Relay for Life committee come out every May for continuing students and every August for freshman. • The committee leaves many positions open on purpose to encourage freshman to apply • Pick a subcommittee that you feel you can excel in and submit your application at the appropriate deadline • If you feel passionate about a specific subcommittee apply to be a chair to lead your peers to success in the area of your choice
Team Captains • If you want to start a Relay team with your friends, dorm mates or organizations, you’re in luck! • You can become a team captain to lead your friends through Relay • Team captains meet once a week in the spring to talk to eBoard about plans for their booth and team fundraising goals • To become a team captain, sign up on www.relayforlife.org/UMFL and choose the Create a Team option • Make sure that your team has at least 10 members
The Teams • If these positions sound too daunting for you, you can sign up to be a team member • You can find a team through your organizations and friends or you can find a team online • To join a team, go to www.relayforlife.org/UMFL and select the Join an Existing Team option • As a team member, you have to help your team caption come up with ideas for your fundraising booth and reach your fundraising goals
Event Volunteers • If you don’t want to commit to a certain fundraising goal or don’t have the time but still want to be involved, you can volunteer at Relay for Life • Come to the event, check in with the committee and help out at a station • We can brief you before the event starts about what happens at each station • Some of the stations include: • The survivor tent • The luminaria tent • The bead table • The merchandise table • The stage
Fundraising
Individual Fundraising • Along with committee fundraisers, each committee member and team member has specific fundraising goals • Committee members are required to fundraise at least $150 • Team members can set their own fundraising goals, but if they raise over $100 they get a free T-shirt • A great way to raise money is by writing a short email about what Relay for Life means to you and sending it out to some of your friends and family • Even if 20 friends donate only $5, you can still reach $100 in fundraising
Our Event
Relay 2017 at UM • This spring, our event is scheduled for April 7, 2017 from 4 p.m. to midnight • It’s located on the Foote Green in front of the library • The team’s fundraising booths line the Foote Green to create the track, which stretches from the library to the bookstore • Our fundraising goal is $45,000 • We plan to have around 40 registered teams and booths • We can’t wait to see you there!
Thank You!
