Insight Wine is traditionally taught in a formal setting, which can be intimidating and even pretentious in the eyes of millennial women. This prevents them from learning about wine, even though they are some of the biggest consumers.


Introducing Blush A coffee table book that acts as a simple girl’s guide to wine. Using our own photography and lessons told in a conversational tone, we’ve bridged the gap between young millennial women and old school education.

Abstract

We’re adults now. Kind of. We’ve moved out of our parents’ house but still get carded trying to order a drink. Yes, we know we look 16 – No, we don’t want to be told we’ll be happy about it someday. And while we’ve mastered the art of toasting in sophisticated restaurants, we clearly can’t afford, to our friend’s futon for no reason at all - knowing how to talk about wine still alludes us. And why wouldn’t it? There are so many descriptors floating around; a wine can be toasty, velvety, creamy, have legs - LEGS! You guys, how can wine even have legs? The truth is we have no idea when it comes to ordering the perfect glass of wine, and it’s a little embarrassing. So we created this simple guide to wine, hoping to help women just like us in conquering this new frontier. In here you’ll find everything from recipes to how to capture the perfect wine-related insta. So one day, when our future (gorgeous, charitable, and modest) fiancé has a mother who asks, “How did you like the wine I sent for Christmas?” there will be no need to blush. We can effortlessly tousle our hair and say, “It had a lovely bouquet, we really enjoyed the undertones of oak.”

Ordering Wine All you need to remember are these three simple traits: body, flavor and texture. Body refers to the weight of a wine. Think of skim milk vs cream; skim would be described as light bodied while cream would be described as full bodied. As far as flavors, determine whether you want sweet or savory. Then, decide if you want a tart wine, a smooth wine, something with bite or something that is more mild. Texture is talked about to describe the way a wine feels in your mouth. Is it opulent, creamy, smooth, oily, silky or succulent? That my friend, is for you to decide. Experiment until you find the traits you like. Once you know what you prefer, you can ask your waiter the right questions to find your ideal wine no matter where you go. “Excuse me sir, I’ll take a glass of your best rose wine. Something full, sweet, and smooth.”


Sangria In the world of wine, Sangria is the beautiful, fun and slightly crazy older cousin. Traditionally from Spain, the name derived from its deep red color, translates to bleeding – safe to say it sounds a whole lot better in Spanish. Sangria has been served for generations at get-togethers of every size throughout Europe. And once you see its vibrant colors in guests’ hands you’ll understand why this drink embodies the perfect party vibe. If you’re thinking about adopting Sangria for your next get-together, take comfort in knowing this recipe is as simple as it gets, and will still make you look put together. The drink typically consists of red wine, chopped fruit, a sweetener and brandy - but can also be made with white and rose wines. Basically, if you’re putting fruit and wine in the same pitcher you’re already killing the game; but if you’d like a little more guidance start with the recipe below. Ingredients 1/2 cup brandy 1/4 cup lemon juice 1/3 cup frozen lemonade concentrate 1/3 cup orange juice 1 (750 milliliter) bottle dry red wine 1/2 cup triple sec 1 lemon, sliced into rounds 1 orange, sliced into rounds 1 lime, sliced into rounds 1/4 cup white sugar (optional) 4 lbs granulated sugar 2 cups carbonated water

Directions In a large pitcher or bowl, mix together the brandy, lemon juice, lemonade concentrate, orange juice, red wine, triple sec, and sugar. Float slices of lemon, orange, lime and maraschino cherries in the mixture. Refrigerate overnight for best flavor. For a fizzy sangria, add club soda just before serving.

Vocabulary Assemblage – This is the art of blending wines from different grape varieties, most commonly Bordeaux and Champagne.

Bouquet – The particular smell that a wine develops after it has been fermented and aged in the bottle. A wine’s bouquet takes years to develop.

Finish – A measurement to describe the flavor that Body – This is not the quality of a wine, but rather, the impression of weight that a wine leaves lingers in your mouth after you taste a wine, also in your mouth. known as the “aftertaste.” Astringent – The dry, puckering effect on the inside of the mouth due to tannins.

Decadent – When the wine is just over the top awesome. Rich, delicious, the bomb.

Acid or Acidity – All grapes contain acid, and acid helps preserve wine. When a wine has a higher acidity, it tends to be crisper and sharper in taste. A wine’s acidity is often rounded out with softer wine elements like alcohol and sugar.

Aeration/breathing – The process of allowing a wine to breathe. It can be accomplished by simply pouring a glass of the wine or by transferring the entire bottle to a decanter.

Chewy – When a wine is chewy, it means the tannins are so strong they severely dry out your mouth, causing you to chew in order to create saliva and moisten up your mouth. Balance – A wine’s balance refers to all of its individual elements – alcohol, acidity, fruitiness, sweetness, and tannins – and how they work in harmony with one another. Legs – The droplets of wine that form on the inside of a wine glass. They can indicate either high alcohol content or high sugar content in wine.

Tannins – The substance in wine that causes your mouth to pucker. Wines that are high in tannins are considered “dry.” Although if a wine high in tannins is aged it can be soften. Complex – Complexity in a wine is highly valued. A wine that is complex features a variety of flavors and a harmony of tastes. Vintage – The year in which the grapes were grown and harvested. This is not necessarily the same as the year that the wine was produced and bottled.
