PROBLEM
We’re facing a big challenge in America. Many people seem to have varying definitions on what it means to be an American. Various groups and individuals are facing discrimination. Others feel unwelcomed or unwanted. At a time when our differences seem greater than our similarities, we need to find a common thread.

SOLUTION
In a series of five posters, the Common Thread project emphasizes Americans’ shared values of perseverance in the face of adversity. It is a way for Americans to stand up and unite against the divisive political rhetoric that has spread. In collaboration with Humans of New York, Monotype will connect the perspectives of Americans with very different backgrounds to show how they are connected through thread typography.

Each poster stands alone beautifully, but when united with the others, it tells a more compelling story. That’s why in cities with the highest amount of cultural diversity (Jersey City, NJ, Oakland, CA, New York, NY, and Silver Spring, MD), there will be pop-up installations where visitors can get up close and personal to experience the thread that runs through these stories.
#COMMONTHREAD
To promote the pop-ups and allow people outside these diverse cities to participate in the Common Thread campaign, we will use Instagram’s new multi-image feature.

Instagram viewers and pop-up visitors can access the microsite to learn more about the Common Thread project, read other Humans of New York stories and spark a conversation on their own social media by sharing their own “Thread”, or personal anecdotes.
