SOCIAL IMPACT INITIATIVE: NATIONAL PSORIASIS FOUNDATION/TAKE ACTION ALABAMA When I picked up the telephone in 2013 and called the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF), I had no idea what a rewarding, challenging, and life-changing decision that would be. My mother and uncle have suffered with a psoriatic disease my entire life, and I wanted to learn more about this condition that I have a 40% chance of contracting. I was astonished to learn that 125 million people worldwide suffer with psoriasis, including 8 million Americans. This debilitating disease is much more than the skin rash people perceive it to be as it affects its sufferers physically, socially, emotionally, and financially, causing depression and social estrangement while creating an environment rife with bullying. In fact, of all diseases, psoriasis has the #2 rate of depression among its sufferers, second only to congestive heart failure. "Psoriasis" comes from a Greek word meaning "to itch" and is a chronic autoimmune and genetic disease, causing skin lesions, non-stop itching, pain, and scars. Psoriasis correlates with psoriatic arthritis, a chronic disorder similar to rheumatoid arthritis that causes pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joints, and can be crippling. The NPF notes that psoriasis is not contagious but awareness is. There is no known cure, and people suffering with this disease often live in the shadows, hiding their illness from friends. However, I have learned that people suffering with this chronic condition are more than just skin deep. What I have done: • I became the youngest of 36 Community Ambassadors for the NPF in 2013 and progressed to where I am now the youngest Committee Member with the Outreach Department at NPF and have been appointed to the NPF Youth Advisory Group. • In the absence of a support group in my home state, I founded Psoriasis Take Action Alabama (PTAA) in 2014. • I attended the FDA Patient Drug Forum in Baltimore, Maryland. • In March 2019, I participated in the NPF Capitol Hill Day where I spoke to staffers about supporting psoriatic disease research funding, Federal Step-Therapy reform, and re-authorization of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). • In April of 2019 I was featured on the NPF Psound Bytes Podcast on episode 18. • Last year, I was appointed by the NPF as a Student Ambassador Recruiter on college campuses. • I brought to Alabama an anti-bullying campaign for children called the Pso-Fun Classroom Tours. The NPF has now asked me to be an advisor to volunteers across the nation who want to start their own version of my tours. • I have partnered with Cahaba Dermatology and Brookwood Dermatology, and have worked with Pack Health, a Birmingham start-up company where I consulted on a 12week product trial. • I was the keynote speaker at Pstamp Out, the first event the NPF ever held in Alabama. • I worked with Dr. James Krell to record an educational video to distribute to both news and social media outlets in support of World Psoriasis Day. • My mother and I were on the cover of the 2019 winter edition of NPF Magazine. • My PSA on social media educates others about psoriatic diseases. • I have helped local residents in my area find doctors, receive co-pay assistance, and handle insurance denials. • I am the recipient of a 2015 NPF Outstanding Volunteer Leadership Award. Beyond the specific application of my social impact initiative work with NPF, I convey to all audiences to whom I speak a broader message of tolerance, acceptance, and understanding that is relevant to people of all ages and backgrounds.
I'm PSO-READY to find a cure and continue my fight against psoriatic diseases. MISS ALABAMA 2021

The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic upended how we live, work, learn and play. Everyday activities we took for granted, as well as major and important life events, were suspended or cancelled. We struggled as individuals, as a society, and as a nation. We worried, we conformed to a new normal, we disagreed, we debated, and we moved forward. There were many terms we either learned for the first time or with which we became more familiar and viewed in a new light…

1921
The Beginning One of this country’s most beloved annual traditions, the Miss America competition began in 1921 as an attempt to generate publicity and extend Atlantic City, New Jersey’s tourism season which customarily ended on Labor Day weekend. Newspaper executives saw this proposed new extravaganza as a vehicle to increase newspaper circulation, and it was suggested that newspapers across the country promote local competitions to crown a representative to send to Atlantic City. In 1915, the Birmingham News had sponsored a grand ball at the luxurious Tutwiler Hotel and Governor Thomas Kilby crowned Lois Wilson as the winner of the Alabama Beauty Ball, which was directed by Martha Jelks Cabaniss and supported local charities. Later, the Birmingham News designated Lois to serve as the state’s first representative to the Miss America competition. The Miss Birmingham competition also took place at the Tutwiler Hotel in 16

Due to the worldwide depression, the national event was suspended for several years. When it returned, the Birmingham News chose to stage the coronation at the plush new movie facility, the Alabama Theatre. Private interviews with candidates were conducted at the Thomas Jefferson Hotel (which is now the TJ Tower) until 1937 when they were also moved to the Tutwiler Hotel.
1943 Scholarship System Is Established In 1943, Miss America Director Lenora Slaughter and Miss America Jean Bartel attended a tea at Birmingham-Southern College where the coeds were chatting about the upcoming Phi Beta Kappa exams and scholarships. Their enthusiasm about obtaining scholarship money furthered the notion that the Miss America competition could become something beyond a swimsuit competition. Ms. Slaughter enlisted the help of MISS ALABAMA 2021

former Birmingham-Southern College President Guy Snavely, who was then the Executive Secretary of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, to gain the cooperation of the nation’s institutions of higher learning. Since that time, the Miss America Organization has evolved into a major provider of scholarships for young women. With the advent of the college scholarship program, contributions made by various chapters of the Alabama Federation of Women’s Clubs boosted the cash scholarship fund. The AFWC has remained active in the program and sponsors a luncheon each spring at the Women’s Club House for all participants. In the early years, competition at Miss America was not limited to one candidate from each state and some U.S. cities also sent representatives. Many of the early representatives from Alabama carried the title of Miss Birmingham, though in 1936 a separate competition held in Tupelo, Mississippi, awarded the title of “Miss Alabama” to Tommy Marie Peck who then competed at Miss America. Crowned in separate competitions, in 1926 Miss Mobile competed at Miss America, and from 1937 to 1940 Miss Montgomery competed in Atlantic City. In 1946 and 1948, two winners (Miss Alabama and Miss Birmingham) were 18

A commendation from 1951 signed by Lenora Slaughter, Atlantic City Mayor Joseph Altman and other Miss America officials congratulates the Miss Alabama Organization on sending a representative to Atlantic City in each year of the contest’s existence. In 1951, Bettye Burson assumed the title of Miss Alabama after Jeanne Moody relinquished the crown after competing at Miss America 1952. In 1961, Patricia Ellisor assumed the title of Miss Alabama after Delores Hodgens relinquished the crown after competing at Miss America 1962. The event remained at the Alabama Theater through 1967. Other venues after that included Boutwell Auditorium (1968), the Alabama State Fairgrounds (1969), Birmingham-Southern College (19701974) and the BirminghamJefferson Civic Center (19751990). A Year To Remember.
Dear Tiara,
Miss Alabama
We are filled with gratitude and respect for your work as Miss Alabama the past two years. When you won the title in 2019, no one could have foreseen the way our world would be so profoundly changed by a global pandemic. Your willingness to stay in the role an additional year as you returned to your studies at the University of Alabama has garnered respect throughout our community. You work on behalf of Alabamians suffering from the debilitating autoimmune disease of psoriasis has caught the attention of the National Psoriasis Foundation which has involved you in leadership roles with both national and international scope. That telephone call you made at the age of 13 to the NPF offering your services as a volunteer has changed your life and the lives of many others, and it proves what can be achieved by a proactive desire to make a difference in the world. You are a remarkable role model for all the citizens of Alabama, and we are so happy that your path crossed ours. Love and best wishes, The Miss Alabama Organization Board of Directors

KATHERINE PUTNAM

Katherine Putnam made international headlines when she was selected as the first Indian-American Miss Louisiana in state history. In January 2010, she traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada, to compete in the Miss America Competition, where she placed third-runner-up and was also the recipient of the National Miracle Maker Award. Her social impact initiative, “The Miracle of Music,” is a motivational program she developed to champion and implement music therapy for children of all ages. It is based upon her own life experiences and the lessons she has learned as the oldest of six children, as a minister’s daughter, as a musician, and as Miss Louisiana. She shared “The Miracle of Music” with thousands of students across the state of Louisiana and represented her home state to millions of global listeners when she was featured on the BBC television network. In celebration of her cultural heritage, Katherine had the honor of traveling to Washington, D.C., to meet with the Asian members of Congress and Louisiana’s legislative leaders in the House and Senate, where she was featured as a guest performer in the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) “Building Today for Tomorrow” 16th Annual Gala Awards Dinner. Katherine has over fifteen years of experience as a professional pianist, vocalist, musical director and educator. She has completed master classes with Van Cliburn Silver Medalist Joyce Yang, Franc D’Ambrosio (best known as the Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony award-winning musical “The Phantom of the Opera”), and has performed twice with renowned concert pianist Dino Kartsonakis. Her year of service ended on a high note when she performed her Miss America talent, “The Hallelujah Chorus,” with Bill Gaither and the Gaither Vocal Band. Katherine has continued to share "The Miracle of Music" as a professional performer, speaker, early childhood music specialist, and piano and vocal performance instructor. Thanks to the scholarships provided by the Miss America and Miss Louisiana Organizations, she completed her Master’s degree from the University of Richmond in Nonprofit Studies debt free, and now works with Louisiana Tech University as their regional recruiter for Baton Rouge and the surrounding area.

I have had many memorable experiences through my community service, but I have a lifelong memory with someone in the organization. I met my best friend during my first year at Miss Alabama while we were both representing our universities. We didn’t get off on the best foot, but we clicked one day and have been best friends ever since. She will always be the purple and gold to my green and gold. What defines you? What you see, is what you get. And pizza. And Dr. Pepper. Aunt Har.

GRATEFUL, SPUNKY, DRIVEN What has been your most memorable experience as a local titleholder? As a little girl, I dreamed of performing on the Miss Alabama stage, and last year, that dream came alive when I danced at Miss Alabama. I have never felt more thankful, excited, or inspired as I did in that moment. What defines you? The best way to understand me is to listen to the opening line of Motley Crue’s Home Sweet Home – “You know I’m a dreamer, but my heart’s of gold.” I am defined by my enthusiasm and passion for creating positive change in the world around me, and I truly believe that no goal is out of reach.

After winning the last prelim of the year, all of the immediate encouragement I received on stage from the other candidates completely overwhelmed me. I was in awe of having so many girls that knew they would be competing against me in June offering me their support. It is a sisterhood I will always cherish. What defines you? My faith truly defines me. Because of it, I live with passion and purpose knowing that each day my life has meaning, and I can make a difference in the lives of others. MISS ALABAMA 2021

This situation helped me understand the need for more minority representation within our system. What defines you? Everyday I wake up motivated to work towards the person that I hope to be someday. Knowing the dedication it takes to become successful and impactful within my community, I use the vision that I have for my future as a way to define myself today. In no way will I be perfect in this pursuit, but I am striving everyday to become one step closer to the woman I hope to be. 68

The most memorable experience I have had as Miss UNA was being the Mistress of Ceremonies for Step Sing. This weekend was full of laughs and excitement from watching my sisterhood compete to having to continue through the program with a busted zipper. It was full of moments that are unforgettable. What defines you? The biggest thing that defines me are my values. Growing up, my parents have always been so compassionate and so driven to accomplish whatever they set their minds to. This example they have set for me has always played a large role in my life.

Michelle Obama wrote, “As if growing up is finite. As if at some point you become something and that’s the end.” I define myself as someone who is constantly learning and evolving. What has been your most memorable experience as a local titleholder? Being a local titleholder has provided so many opportunities for me to further engage and volunteer within my community. Besides all the memories of being able to mentor and connect with children across Sylacauga, I would say my first appearance as Miss Sylacauga was the most memorable. Not only did I have a blast being able to perform Christmas songs for an evening, but I was quite warm after I spilled an entire cup of scorching hot chocolate on me. Let’s say that when I had to ask the mayor if he could unlock the bathrooms, his face after taking one look at me is forever engraved in my memory. What defines you? I think what defines a person is the ability to overcome negative occurrences and rise above them. What defines me is my will to remain positive when things aren’t looking up. My faith and deep appreciation for the simple wonders of life ultimately gives me the ability to do so throughout my day-to-day routine.

Alabama became the 22nd state on December 14, 1819. Sources vary regarding the origin of the state name, but the traditional story is that "Alabama" comes from the Native American Creek language and means "tribal town." Other sources claim it is derived from the Choctaw language, translating as "thicket-clearers" or "vegetation-gatherers."

I had the opportunity to speak with our Senators and Representatives about the importance of therapy for those with autism. In 2018, a bill was passed that required insurance to fund therapies for children with autism. It was a privilege to get to be a part of this monumental moment for the autism society. What defines you? I am a very family-oriented person. My family is the foundation of everything I am. They encourage me, inspire me, and have built me into the person I am today.

t the January 2003 Miss America Winter Workshop in Chicago, the concept of a national teen program under the auspices of the Miss America Organization was a primary topic of conversation. Miss Alabama Organization president, Nan Teninbaum, and vice president, Anita Walker, could tell that it was only a matter of time before teen programs in each state would be required by the Miss America Organization. On the plane ride home, they started planning for the first teen scholarship competition directed by the Miss Alabama Organization. They knew that with the solid base of volunteers involved with the Miss Alabama Organization at the state and local level, a teen program could be launched quickly. Within a few months, thanks to the remarkable talents and dedication of Joy Deupree, Jeanne Halfman, and numerous volunteers, the first Miss Teen Alabama/America competition was held in Sylacauga. Whitney Dykes, a 16-year-old clogger from Louisville, Alabama, and a student at Dixie Academy won the inaugural title. Whitney Vautier, a native of Mobile, won the 2004 title. Whitney, a pianist, was a student at USM-Wright Preparatory School. In late 2004, the Miss America Organization announced the formation of a board of directors for the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen program in Orlando, Florida. Following suit, the Alabama teen program was renamed, and for the first time Miss Alabama’s Outstanding Teen would compete at a national level. Jenna Bryant, a dancer from Hoover

Good Luck, Contestants! It’s not just about getting your degree from Jacksonville State University. It’s about the journey and being prepared for where it may take you. It’s about sitting down and asking the important questions. What do I want to become? What do I want to achieve? And how will I get there? At JSU, we not only help you answer these questions, we help you find where you’re going. MISS ALABAMA 2021

MISS ALABAMA 2021
There she is... Miss Neurosurgeon, Miss Social Activist, Miss Jet Pilot, Miss Investigative Journalist, Miss Expert Coder, Miss CEO . . . Miss Whatever-She-Wants-to-Be. And yes, she is beautiful. Beautiful in the way she is smart, principled and passionate. Stunning in how she leads, commands a room and makes an impact. Striking in her genuineness, fearlessness and general awesomeness. Never guided by what she ‘should do’ but forever driven by what she ‘could do’. She has the confidence, the skills and is empowered to make it happen. There she is. Miss America. No wonder she has a crown — she rules.
M I SS A M E R I C A
As a young woman who previously battled an eating disorder and body image issues, Camille chose to compete in the Miss America program because of the redirection from physical appearance to social impact. In June of 2019, Camille was named Miss Virginia after breaking from tradition to perform the “catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide” as her onstage talent. Her unique talent performance and focus on women in STEM has sparked a positive reaction of inclusivity for the program as a whole. Camille’s story has been viewed by millions on national and international media outlets including The Today Show, Talk Stoop, CNN, BBC, The Kelly Clarkson Show, CBS This Morning, Inside Edition, The Weather Channel, Southern Living, Canada’s CTV, Germany’s RTL, and many more. On December 19, 2019, Camille earned the job of Miss America 2020 after competing live on NBC from the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut. A certified Naloxone trainer in the city of Richmond, VA, Schrier uses the Miss America recognition to nationally promote her social impact initiative, Mind Your Meds: Drug Safety and Abuse Prevention from Pediatrics to Geriatrics. Camille was awarded the Engineering Champion Award by the Phi Sigma Rho National Sorority for her work in promoting women in engineering and technical fields. Camille has been busy sharing her passion for science and drug safety at many events, including being the first Miss America to speak in the General Assembly at the United Nations through a special invitation by HRH Princess Dr. Nisreen El-Hashemite, Executive Director of the Royal Academy of Science International Trust, for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science Assembly.

100 YEARS
Celebrating the
1920s
the
1930s
In the summer of 1921, on the boardwalk of Atlantic City, an American icon was born. For the past 100 years, Miss America has been one of the country’s most recognizable household names and has been at the center of everything from national trends to social movements to the birth of television. The young women involved have made a significant difference in people’s lives through their charitable and community service endeavors, using the national platform to educate millions of Americans on issues facing the nation.
In the decades just prior to the competition’s creation, there was a marked transformation around women’s roles in society with expanding social, political and cultural activity for women. A new image for women developed, symbolizing the changing times. The modern woman was vigorous. She exercised and was encouraged to eat right. This was an unprecedented break from the rigorously controlled physicality prescribed for the ideal 19th century woman, with its emphasis on delicacy and fragility.
In 1933, the country was in the throes of the Great Depression. Some prominent Atlantic City businessmen finally decided to revive the competition after being convinced they were missing out on valuable revenue. The outdoor parades and other big attractions were left out due to the high cost that Depression Era businesses could not afford. Due to the lack of adequate publicity, the 1933 event was a financial disaster. It was not revived in Atlantic City on secure financial footing until 1935. Innovations to raise the public image included the talent segment, which was added to the competition in 1935, and the formation of the vast Hostess Committee. The committee was made up of prominent Atlantic City women.
the
1940s
During World War II, the competition once again faced discontinuation, this time because of war. Officials had to think quickly and adapt to the changing world around them. Miss America was transformed into an emblem of patriotism and national pride. Her image was connected to the war effort as the winners of those years sold more war bonds than any other public figure. Thus began the tradition of Miss America as a morale booster for American troops. Also during the 1940s, the Miss America Organization created the single most important innovation of its time—a scholarship program. Sponsoring scholarships changed the program dramatically, which, with time, helped the organization become the country’s leading provider of educational scholarships for women.
the
1950s
1950 marked the start of post dating the title. In September 1950, Miss Alabama, Yolande Betbeze, was crowned “Miss America 1951.” With television taking the country by storm, the advent of a telecast caught the imagination of the American public. For the first time, the Miss America Competition came into people’s homes. The annual program provided a kind of entertainment never before experienced nationally. It seemed that the women onstage embodied the dreams of every young girl. By the end of the 1950s, Miss America had become an international symbol of the ideal young woman. For many, their earliest memories of television are of Bert Parks, surrounded by intelligent, talented and beautiful young women vying for the coveted title of Miss America.
the
1960s
The 1960s were once again a time of redefinition for the Miss America Organization, as well as for American society. Television ratings continued to soar and in 1966 the first color broadcast hit the airways. But soon, the country’s attention began to focus on our involvement in the Vietnam War. It became apparent there was a need for Miss America’s role to expand even more. Although the organization was heavily criticized for the 1967 launch of the “Miss America USO Troupes” into Vietnam and around the world. To this day, the Miss America Organization, maintains its support of the US Armed Forces. In 1968, feminists stormed the boardwalk in Atlantic City in their crusade for equal rights. They used Miss America as a symbol for their fight, which encouraged even more change for the Miss America Organization.
the
1970s
The 50th Anniversary in 1970 saw a rise in television ratings. By 1974, a law student crowned a doctorate student. The groundwork for the modern Miss America was sealed. Not only were candidates becoming more interested in gaining a good education, they also saw Miss America as a means to success. As the momentum of the women’s movement grew, the women of Miss America were increasingly turning their attention to professional goals.
1980s
the The decade witnessed several firsts beginning in 1980 when Doris Janell Hayes (Washington) and Lencola Sullivan (Arkansas) became the first African-American women to win preliminary awards and Miss Sullivan becoming the first African-American woman to place in the Top Five. Vanessa Williams was crowned Miss America 1984 becoming the first African-American woman to win the coveted Miss America title. Kaye Lani Rae Rafko was the first Registered Nurse when named Miss America 1988 which became the genesis of the official platform requirement in 1989.
the
1990s
the
2000s
the
2010s
The 1990s marked a new era as young women increasingly began to see the Miss America program as an opportunity to pursue higher education, professional opportunities and social causes. Winners of the title started becoming internationally recognized spokeswomen on issues ranging from literacy to AIDS awareness. Each Miss America was now required to have a platform issue to increase the public’s awareness during their national speaking tour.
The new millennium brought many exciting challenges and fresh changes to the Miss America Organization. The scholarship foundation continued to grow, and more and more individuals began to recognize the importance of the countless community service hours the candidates offered their communities. In conjunction with CMT and TLC, the Organization was fortunate to align itself with new network partners who understood the intrinsic value of this historic institution while making it more relatable to young women across America.
Miss America has evolved in society as women in society have evolved. In 2019, candidates were no longer judged on physical appearance. That meant the elimination of the swimsuit competition and additional time and focus on the candidates’ voices to be heard more often. Throughout the competition and in interviews, candidates had additional opportunities to advocate for their social impact initiatives and to demonstrate how they are uniquely qualified for the exciting and challenging 365-day job of being Miss America.
REDEFINING CYBER The Beacom College With innovative education, research, partnerships, and outreach programs, Dakota State University is redefining cyber. DSU supports women as they rise to meet their goals in education and their careers. A special congratulations to all the women of Miss America 2020.
