HOSTS

KATE

Shindle

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Kate Shindle has loved the Miss America Organization for a lifetime. Some of her earliest memories are of the years when her mom was a hostess and her dad helped with logistics for the annual pageant in Atlantic City. As a teenager, she too was a volunteer, taping off parking spaces in Convention Hall and lending a hand at the parade. At 20, she took a year off from Northwestern University for the privilege of serving as Miss America 1998, dedicating about 90% of that time to HIV/AIDS education and prevention. Although she returned to finish school and pursue work as a professional actor, that year was formative in teaching her to use her voice as an activist. Kate has appeared on Broadway in Cabaret (Sally Bowles), Legally Blonde (Vivienne, original Broadway cast), Wonderland (Mad Hatter) and Jekyll & Hyde. Her most recent national tour was Fun Home (Alison). TV/Film credits include a recurring role on The Good Fight (Rachelle Max), Capote, Law and Order: SVU, Elementary, and The Stepford Wives. She has performed in regional theaters and concert halls across the country. In 2017, she received the prestigious Sarah Siddons Award for Actor of the Year. Kate’s writing has appeared in Variety, The Daily Beast, Salon, Newsweek, and her 2014 book Being Miss America: Behind the Rhinestone Curtain, published by the University of Texas Press. In 2015, she was the youngest member ever elected President of Actors’ Equity Association, the union representing actors and stage managers working in live theatre, and is now serving her third term. She is also President of Theatre Authority, and a trustee for both the Entertainment Community Fund and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. She lives in New York City. #MISSAMERICA2023

The statistics are in. As of the end of 2021 student loan debt in our country reached $1.75 trillion and 59% of that debt was held by women. The cost of education continues to rise each year. If a student were to attend Boston University for four years of undergrad and three years of graduate school, before any student aid, the cost is a staggering $543,634.00. The student loan debt statistics and the ever-rising cost of a college education is illustrative of the importance of the Miss America Organization’s scholarship grants. When Emma Broyles earned the job of Miss America last December, it came with a $100,000 scholarship—the largest single scholarship ever granted by the Miss America Organization. That award will certainly assist Emma as she pursues a medical degree. Besides Miss America, there are many success stories at the state and local competition levels of the organization. Those scholarship grants at the various levels of the program make all the difference for young women trying to pay for their college careers. Each time a woman enters a Miss America local program, she has a

chance at a scholarship. When she wins her local title, she has the opportunity to add to her at the state level.

The stories are compelling. Devanni (Partridge) Pearson served as Miss Washington 2009. She held two local titles and then earned the state title on her second try. Although she received $30,000 in cash scholarship grants, it was the in-kind tuition grant offered at Miss America by a chiropractic college that allowed her to graduate with a doctorate degree debt free. By the time she graduated, tuition for the 10 trimester four years of graduate school cost about $110,000.00. The full ride grant she received because she made it to the Miss America stage made all the difference. Devanni says, “The average Doctor of Chiropractic medicine graduates with between $150,000 and $200,000 in student loan debt.” Without the weight of those crushing student loans, Devanni—who also met her husband at college—was able to open a practice after graduating. Today she and her husband have a thriving practice in

Report Highlights: Women owe a disproportionately high amount of the total student loan debt and are more likely to have higher amounts of debt. In part this is due to the fact that female bachelor’s degree holders are paid 74% of what their male peers make. $1.75 trillion in total student loan debt (including federal and private loans). 59% of student loan debt is held by women $929 billion in student loan debt belongs to women. Females’ average debt is 9.6% higher than their male peers one year after graduation. Approximately 42.9 million Americans with federal student loan debt each owe an average $37,105 for their federal loans. The average public university student borrows $32,880 to attain a bachelor’s degree.

*Several million federal loans are commercially/privately held and are ineligible for the protections and benefits extended to other federal borrowers under the CARES Act.

Minot, North Dakota. They have three children, and Devanni still volunteers at the Miss Washington State Competition. Moreover, her parents also volunteer for the Miss Auburn local program. After her mother encouraged her, Dr. Mackenzie Howe, entered New Hampshire’s Outstanding Teen program ten years ago. Her mother, whom she lost during her first year of college, had competed in the Miss NH College (now Southern NH University) local program. After Outstanding Teen, Kenzie began competing in the Miss program to help pay for three years at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences. She won the Miss Derry title and received a $10,200.00 cash scholarship. At Miss NH in 2022, she was a top 10 finalist, a STEM award winner, earned the Congeniality award and the Humanitarian scholarship altogether winning $4,900 in grants. This year she competed in a total of three local programs, earned $3,800 in the

first two and hit the jackpot in her third, earning the title of Miss Winnipesaukee and a $15,250.00 scholarship. Her total through the MAO/MAOTeen program is just under $39,000. This puts a dent in her $198,000 in student loans taken while earning a Doctorate in Pharmacy, which she did this past May. Now a licensed pharmacist, Dr. Howe is excited that she has two more years in the program. “This program has opened a window of opportunities for me— not just scholarships but professional development as well. I am comfortable speaking with peers, MDs, and patients because of the life skills I developed through this program.” The new Executive Director for the Miss Montana Organization, Danette Sawin, took a non-traditional career path after winning her local title, Miss North Shore, in 1984. Danette used her scholarship to attend Airframe and Powerplant school at Everett College. She was one of two

women in the class and after her two-year program was awarded an FAA license to work on aircraft. She was immediately hired by Boeing as a hydraulic and pneumatic mechanic on the 747 airliners. She is now a manager overseeing the 787 operation managing 32 engineers. Once at Boeing, the company paid for the remainder of Danette’s degrees including a BS in Professional Aeronautics & Aviation Safety and an MS in aeronautical science from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. Danette says, “Without that cash scholarship— which went a long way toward my two year program—it never would have got me started with what is a very lucrative career. I was a very independent young woman and I wanted a career where I could support myself. Between the Miss America program and Boeing I have never been in debt with student loans.” Danette met her husband at Boeing and they are set to retire in Montana. They have two daughters. #MISSAMERICA2023

by Kim Parrish Former President, MAOTeen, Inc.

Eighteen years ago, state leaders within the Miss America Organization brainstormed an idea to create a national teen program for the many states who were already running teen events as successful fundraisers within their organizations. Volunteers in each state were abuzz with excitement over the prospects of a national competition highlighting scholastic achievement, creative accomplishment, healthy living, and community involvement for America’s teens.

From humble beginnings to eventually becoming a leading provider of scholarships for young women across the nation, Miss America’s Outstanding Teen, Inc. (MAOTeen) has now shaped the lives of nearly 1000 national competitors and tens of thousands of state and local hopefuls vying for the chance to represent their country, earn educational funding and have a voice to implement positive changes in this world.

Let’s take a journey through some of the most memorable moments in MAOTeen’s history. 28

MAOTEEN

The Beginning

On a summer night in Orlando, Florida in 2005 state representatives traveled to the Linda Chapin Theater at the Orange County Convention Center in the hopes of capturing scholarships and the opportunity to be named the first “little sister” to Miss America. MAOTeen’s trademarked tune, “It’s Your Time to Shine,” flooded the theatre as the titleholders charged through the aisles on their way to the stage holding their state flags. To say the least, the energy and excitement was intense! Meghan Miller, an articulate student from Beaumont, Texas, had already won two Preliminary Awards as her talent was unforgettable. On stage with her two closest “friends”, Abner

and Shannon, Meghan brought down the house with her ventriloquist act, S u p e rc a l i f ra g i l i st i c ex p i a l i d o c i o u s. Although the remainder of the competition was fierce, Meghan was crowned Miss America’s Outstanding Teen 2006 by Miss America 2005, Deidre Downs. Meghan says it was her love of watching the Miss America Competition when she was a child that motivated her to compete. Along with the title and job opportunity, Meghan also won $33,000 in cash scholarships. Just as Margaret Gorman will always be immortalized as the first Miss America, Meghan Miller will always be our beloved first Miss America’s Outstanding Teen, paving the way for her sisters to follow.

Scholarships

Miss America’s Outstanding Teen is a scholarship competition. Since 2005, MAOTeen has made its mark by awarding more than $2 million in cash scholarships to nearly 1000 young women and has paid scholarships to more than 200 universities across the nation. In fact, MAOTeen has made these scholarship payments to schools in every state as well as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Everyone involved in the Miss America Organization knows the challenges of collecting donations for cash scholarships or finding the right connection at a university willing to offer an in-kind scholarship. In fact, saying it is “challenging” is an understatement! In the first year of competition, MAOTeen still managed to offer $155,000 to the 52 candidates at a time when in-kind scholarships within the organization didn’t even exist yet! MAOTeen needed support and the state leadership in Alabama answered the call for help by sharing their connections to admission offices at leading universities. Troy University became the first school to step up and offer each qualifying contestant a full tuition scholarship! Auburn University followed in 2009 and the University of Alabama joined the list in 2013. Many more schools from around the country followed and hundreds of titleholders have since taken advantage of these full tuition scholarships! 30

M ISSA M E R I CA .O R G

In-kind scholarships became a huge focus of growth and goals were set to provide support from universities in every state. By 2016, the in-kind scholarships grew even more to a record high of $33,495,532 in assistance provided to qualifying candidates. What a year! In 2021, MAOTeen made more scholarship connections as the organization was introduced to the universities supporting their “big sister” competition, Miss America, and is pleased to continue to offer more than $30 million per year in inkind assistance. As for cash scholarships, MAOTeen has now paid out nearly $1.7 million directly to universities on behalf of hundreds of state titleholders! MAOTeen would like to acknowledge the following schools for their current or previous support: The University of Alabama, AL Troy University, AL Dakota State University, SD West Virginia University, WV Hollins University, VA Auburn University, AL Rowan University, NJ Sherman College of Chiropractic, SC Oklahoma City University, OK Nova Southeastern University, FL University of New Haven, CT Point Park University, PA University of San Diego, CA Manhattan School of Music, NY Edgemar Center for the Arts, CA ECPI University, VA, NC, SC, FL, TX

MAOTEEN

Social Impact

MAOTeen promotes community service and requests that each participant develop their own Social Impact Initiative. On average, state titleholders contribute more than 10,000 collective hours annually to volunteering. Each national titleholder proved to be a changemaker in their own way championing causes like Arts Education, Cancer Research, Dance Therapy, Organ Donation Awareness, and countless projects on finding the power to achieve your dreams through self-confidence. Here are a few highlights: Miss America’s Outstanding Teen 2008, Caitlin Brunell, created Caitlin’s Closet, a registered nonprofit, to collect gently used dresses and distribute to those who could not afford to purchase attire for prom or homecoming events. Caitlin’s Closet was embraced by the state organizations and thousands of dresses were collected across the nation. Texas led the largest drive accumulating more than $300,000 worth of gently used gowns in honor of Caitlin’s Closet and redistributed them to seven area school districts. Caitlin’s efforts were featured in USA Today, highlighting her work on Make a Difference Day. Miss America’s Outstanding Teen 2015, Olivia McMillan, had a standout year of service as she inspired teens to be self-confident by promoting “body positivity”. She appeared in Seventeen Magazine and TeenVogue featured her, twice, and named her one of “Ten Teens

Who Changed the World in 2014” along with Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai. Olivia was also named a spokesperson for American Eagle’s sister company Aerie. MAOTeen was named a “Top 100 Business” by the US Chamber of Commerce and received 8 Stevie Awards for Women in Business including “PR Campaign of the Year” for the Presidential Project. Allie Nault, Miss America’s Outstanding Teen 2016, hit the ground running in a presidential election year and was a powerhouse on the campaign trail. With a platform called “Making Sense”, she found her crown and sash gave her access to the presidential candidates visiting in her home state of New Hampshire. She launched the Presidential Project and asked every candidate about his / her plan for the $19 trillion of debt. She became a spokesperson for Rock the Vote and found herself interviewed on major news networks. Miss America’s Outstanding Teen 2017, Nicole Jia, launched her #BeSelfless Campaign calling on all girls across the nation to take less selfies and more photos of them doing selfless acts of kindness. She even led a beach cleanup with the 50 state teen titleholders at the New Jersey shore, picking up trash during Miss America week. In 2020, Payton May became the first Miss America’s Outstanding Teen to hold

the title for two consecutive years during the Covid- 19 Pandemic. Payton was challenged by the decrease of in-person opportunities and turned to more unique ways to spread her message, reaching thousands via social media to register 3,000 voters, appearing in Nickelodeon’s “Kid’s Pick the President” show and partnering with Civics Unplugged and Harvard’s Voter Mobilization and Civic Engagement Series.

Fun Facts

Lauren Nelson, Miss America 2007, represented Oklahoma as their state teen titleholder in 2004 prior to the creation of the MAOTeen Organization. Lauren performed as Miss Teen Oklahoma on the Miss America stage in 2005 to promote the upcoming national event. Miss America 2014, Nina Davuluri was Miss Michigan’s Outstanding Teen 2006. Savvy Shields, Miss America 2017 was Miss Arkansas’ Outstanding Teen 2009. Cara Mund, Miss America 2018 held the title of Miss North Dakota’s Outstanding Teen 2010 and Emma Broyles, Miss America 2022 also represented her state as Miss Alaska’s Outstanding Teen 2017. The very first MAOTeen Scholarship was paid to Brigham Young University for Miss Utah’s Outstanding Teen 2005. Since then, checks have been written to universities in all 50 states!

Miss America 1998

K AT E It’s not an exaggeration to say that Kate Shindle has loved the Miss America Organization for a lifetime. Some of her earliest memories are of the years when her mom was a hostess and her dad helped with logistics for the annual pageant in Atlantic City. As a teenager, she too was a volunteer, taping off parking spaces in Convention Hall and lending a hand at the parade.

Shindle

##MMI S I SSSAAMMEERRI C I CAA22002233

Miss America 1948

Beatrice Bella Shopp spent her childhood in Downers Grove, IL and teen years in Hopkins Minnesota. In 1948, at the young age of 18, she became our Miss America and no one was more surprised than BeBe to win the title for she thought she was too young. She did win Preliminary Swim Suit, but fortunately it was decided that year, after 15 years, Miss America would be crowned in an evening gown. Her personal goal was only to achieve a scholarship to help her pay for a music education. She did that and much more. BeBe’s year began with a whirlwind trip to NYC and the first of many firsts for a young Miss America. An exhausting dress fitting for sponsor Everglaze Fabrics, a first plane flight to California for sponsor Catalina Swim Suits, automotive shows for sponsor Nash Motors, conventions for sponsor Pepsi Cola and attending numerous civic meetings, pageants and traveling the State of Minnesota were but a few of the activities on her busy schedule. Going home for the first time was very exciting for the community response was heartwarming. She had not been a homecoming queen at her high school, so this new title suprised many people! Becoming Miss America means that you mature quickly and learn new skills on a daily basis, devoted parents Ed and Bea Shopp. Her mom became her chaperone and her Dad her business manager. They worked tirelessly with Lenora Slaughter and Brad Frapart to train, protect, organize, develop, and schedule BeBe’s very busy year as Miss America.

Miss Americas mature fast and develop new skills on a daily basis. For BeBe, the most challenging skill was public speaking. Coached by her Dad and putting what she learned to regular use helped her become an accomplished speaker. Daily travels across America in her Nash Car or short flights on Eastern Airlines necessitated that BeBe sleep in her car and sleep through bumpy take-offs and landings at many airports. Quick makeup applications, hair prep, memorizing names, recalling community facts, histor:y and smiling all the time, are some of the little things you learn to do being Miss America. In August of 1949, BeBe unknowingly created an international fashion controversy. She was invited by travel editor, Virginia Safford, of the Minneapolis Tribune, to visit Europe for a month. At the start of her trip, BeBe and Virginia gave an interview at the airport in New York. An innocent comment on American women preferring one-piece bathing suits to bikinis became “Miss America on her way to clean up Europe”. Several comments were distorted to create an uncomfortable environment on the trip but generated great publicity for the pageant and recognition of BeBe across Europe and the USA. Lenora was initially ver:y upset and feared Bebe’s crown was in jeopardy. Lenora eventually realized the value of the publicity but advised against further commentary. BeBe could not look at the those newspapers clippings for years and now laughs at them, for uncomfortable PR can be advantageous.

In September 1949, BeBe took her $5,000 scholarship to the Manhattan School of Music. She graduated in three years with a Bachelor of Music in percussion. Postgraduation, she toured parts of America with a vocal/musical trio for a year. She returned to Minnesota and the television world where she started her own show, “An Afternoon with BeBe,” which ran from 1953-1954. In 1954, she married Bayard Waring and raised four girls. BeBe continued to represent and promote the Miss America pageant, becoming the New England representative for the Pageant in 1960, the first Miss A Sister to emcee pageants. She also judged many state and local competitions and judged the Nationals in 1953 & 1990. She went on to volunteer for VISta for two years in Little Rock, AR for the drug educational programs. She has traveled to Afghanistan with her Miss America sisters, visiting six US Army bases for a “Meet and Greet Tour” in 2009. She sang in a “Share the Music” group on Cape Ann in MA. for 10 years and was President for 6 years of The Glouceter Stage Company. She is a licensed Lay Minister in the Episcopal Church. She has 10 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren. Bayard passed away in March of 2022. BeBe and Bayard were married for 67 1/2 years. BeBe is ver:y proud of her title as Miss America 1948. The Pageant has given her a lifetime of memories, opportunities, friends, experiences, personal growth and much joy. She has cherished representing the class of 1948 and an organization that has done so much for young women across the nation. It has been an awesome 75 Years! #MISSAMERICA2023

IN MEMORIAM

In Memoriam Miss America

PA M E L A Pam was the third of five Miss Michigans to be crowned Miss America and the first ballet dancer to become Miss America. At the Miss America Pageant, Bert Parks asked her the final question: “What advice would you give your fourteen-year-old sister Melanie, and other young girls, about to enter the ‘now’ generation?” What Mr. Parks did not know was that Melanie was born with several birth defects and severe developmental delay-conditions that were not often discussed in the late 1960s. Pam tackled the question in her straightforward manner, replying, “Well, unfortunately, my little sister Melanie is brain damaged, so I really couldn’t give her any information. But I think a young girl entering the ‘now’ generation today, I’d just tell them to be themselves and enjoy life by being 42

themselves.” Advocating for the special needs community was a lifelong interest of Pam’s, and as Miss America she became a national spokesperson for the March of Dimes. Pam also went on two USO tours to Vietnam, a highlight of her life. She was awarded citations for courage under fire when enemy forces prompted evacuations during a live show and she was honored to be Miss America at the 50th Anniversary celebration of Miss America. After her year of service, Pam returned to Michigan and graduated from Mercy College (now University of Detroit Mercy) with a degree in Speech & Drama, and she continued to model and perform in the Detroit area. She married in 1976 and the pride and joy of her life, Hilary Levey Friedman, was born in 1980. After

divorcing, Pam started her own business as a cosmetologist and electrologist. She also taught modeling courses, judged dance competitions, and wrote for The Oakland Press. After her sister, Melanie died in 2008, Pam established the Pam Eldred Community Health Scholarship through the Miss Michigan Organization, awarding a $2,000 scholarship to young women pursuing careers impacting the special needs community. Pam’s daughter has also remained engaged with the Miss America community, judging at the local, state, and national level, teaching a university course on beauty pageants as an American institution, and writing a book about the feminist history of pageantry. Pam enjoyed one of her last public appearances at the 100th Anniversary parade, riding with her grandsons, Carston and Quenton.

After graduating from Virginia Tech with a degree in Clothing, Textiles, and Related Art, Kylene won the title of Miss America 1979…the first from the State of Virginia. On the Today Show after her crowning, she was asked about her post Miss America plans and Kylene said since she’d won the title she might just go into business on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach. That day she received an invitation to Palm Beach to open a “parking lot” and drove the Gucci Cadillac Seville displayed in front of the

Gucci store to break the ribbon. “My future unfolded and I signed a 10 year lease at age 23 and d. Kylene opened in November. Going into business was like getting a PHD in Business Administration. Kylene was immediately part of the fashion world and traveled as a spokesperson for fashion and beauty related corporations like Clairol. PrewittSalem

Cheryl Salem walked the runway to become Miss America 1980, despite what appeared to be all odds stacked against her. A horrific car crash resulting in a physical handicap and over 100 stitches in her face, were no match for what God had planned for her life. Through childlike faith in Him, she overcame the obstacles and eventually took the crown in Atlantic City to become Miss America 1980. She has used this distinction as a springboard to launch the gospel into churches, women’s conferences, and many television appearances. According to Cheryl, “None of these things would be possible, if not for my Jesus.” In 1985, Cheryl married the love of her life, Harry Salem II. Harry and Cheryl Salem travel the world ministering the gospel, telling people that Jesus loves them and that He is returning soon! Their lives revolve around seeking the Lord and where He would have them go. Two by two they travel, loving God’s people, living and moving in His anointing. In 1999, Harry and Cheryl endured the loss of their 6-year-old daughter, Gabrielle. As they boldly took steps of faith to overcome the agonizing pain of Gabrielle’s death, they asked God to restore them and for souls to come into His kingdom. God has restored the Salem family and because of His mighty anointing, the altars have been full! Harry and Cheryl are committed to leading godly lives as an example to their sons, Harry III and Roman. In 2012 Roman

Healing and restoration came full circle to the Salem family with the miracle births of Roman and Stephanie’s children, Mia Gabrielle and Roman Harry. In 2017 Cheryl was honored to receive an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Heritage University and Seminary. Cheryl and Harry have written over forty books. From her first book to her last, Cheryl’s books are open and honest with such transparency you can almost hear her talking to you while you read! She has recorded numerous worship music projects, from prophetic books of the Bible, lullabies, instrumentals, prophetic flowing intercession, and beautiful worship CDs. Harry and Cheryl are walking out the Lord’s plan in their sessions of School of Worship. These are intensive training schools where the Salems teach, impart, and personally work with students to help them grow to the next level in their worship, life, and ministry.

Emma has spent over half of her life advocating for people with intellectual disabilities through her work with Special Olympics Alaska. Her older brother, Brendan, has Down syndrome and is a source of inspiration for her. When Brendan became a Special Olympics athlete at the age of 8, Emma started attending weekly track and field practices 60

with him. She and her younger brother, Ben, enjoyed helping at the practices by chasing down balls during the tennis ball throw and running laps with the athletes. She grew up learning from those who are unlike her, allowing her to develop an understanding of the importance of inclusion and empathy. This understanding drove her to continue her involvement through Partners Club, a school program through Special Olympics Alaska. There, Emma served as co-president and had the chance to see relationships bloom between students with and without intellectual disabilities. She realized the significance in teaching students about inclusion and equipping them with the necessary tools to be leaders of social change in their communities. As Miss Alaska, she toured schools to spread the

message of inclusion, working closely with Special Olympics school programs in her hometown. Miss America serves to demolish stereotypes about women and show the world that outward appearance should never determine someone’s worth. Similarly, Special Olympics strives to promote an Inclusion Revolution, encouraging people all around the world to celebrate one another’s abilities rather than focusing on our differences. Special Olympics works to spread compassion and acceptance in a way that can unite the world. As Miss America, Emma advocated for Special Olympics on an even wider scale as a Special Olympics International Champion Ambassador to ultimately mend communities one connection at a time.

EMMA BROYLES

I was a senior in high school when a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit my hometown. As the floor shook and the walls rattled around me, I dove under a table and hung on for dear life. Everything around me had shifted. When I’m asked about what was going through my head when I was named Miss America 2022, I’m reminded of that feeling during the earthquake. The big, shiny stage on which I was standing no longer felt stable. It all felt like a dream. I heard the audience cheering, felt the crown as Camille Schrier pinned it to my shaking head. Tears filled my eyes as I looked up, watching the confetti begin to fall. I remember turning around to face my Miss America classmates, unsure of what to do or what just happened. They held me up, fixed my crown, and wiped my tears, bringing me back to reality. They reassured me and celebrated with me and on that night, I truly understood the meaning of the Miss America sisterhood. Having the Forever Miss Americas on the stage with me on this life-changing night reminded me of the rich history and powerful impact the Miss America Organization has had on all of us who have ever stepped foot on a Miss America stage from locals to nationals. I felt humbled by their presence, knowing that it’s up to me to honor their legacy and that of the Miss America Organization as we head into the next 100 years. Years from now, I hope to look back at 2022 and feel that I made a difference as Miss America. That we will all be kinder to one another, and not just to those with whom we agree. That we will be more accepting of others, especially those with whom we have

the least in common. And most of all, that we will have compassion for those we understand the least. My year as Miss America has been a dream come true! Some of my favorite events included flying in an F-16 with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbids, attending the Special Olympics USA Games in Orlando as a Special Olympics International Champion Ambassador, riding in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, attending the start of the Iditarod in Alaska, being recognized by Alaska’s governor in the State of the State Address, attending events for the 2022 Superbowl in L.A., and touring schools around the country to speak about Special Olympics and the significance of inclusion.

To the Miss America staff, board, and volunteers, thank you for supporting

me and for devoting so much of your time and energy to this organization and the young women who benefit from it.

To my family and friends, I can’t thank you enough for uplifting me during this crazy year. Thank you for reassuring me and showing me endless love. To the Miss America class of 2022, I couldn’t be Miss America without your love and support. It has been a tremendous honor and privilege to represent you this year, and I hope I have made you proud.

To the next Miss America, enjoy this whirlwind of a year and soak up every moment. Remember that you deserve this, and you were given this opportunity for a reason!

Love, Emma #MISSAMERICA2023

Job Description

Miss America is the most visible representative of the mission and vision of the Miss America Organization (“MAO”). Miss America’s job is one of purpose. She is one member of the MAO team and is responsible for positively promoting the goals and objectives of MAO as well as advancing her own Social Impact Initiative (“SII”). Miss America is a full-time job. As an employee of MAO, she earns a salary, is eligible for MAO employee benefits and is subject to the policies and procedures of the MAO. She reports to the MAO Travel Manager or designated staff. While traveling and at events and appearances, she works side by side with her assigned Tour Manager to fulfil the wishes of MAO clients, partners, and sponsors. Miss America works with the MAO team to develop a realistic, actionable strategic SII plan with metrics that are then used to measure her performance. The performance metrics include building on her

SII she brought to the job, identifying new national partners for her SII and working as part of the MAO team to expand her SII’s reach through the Miss America platform. She is also expected to be a national ambassador of MAO’s national partner(s) and sponsors as directed, and advance recruitment into the MAO program. Through public interaction, media appearances, speaking engagements, sponsor and partnership support, presentations, social media and administrative work, this position advances MAO’s primary goals of education and service. The job of Miss America is demanding. It is not a typical 9-5 position and the scheduling demands differ daily. She must be mentally, emotionally, physically and professionally equipped to travel, sometimes daily, across the country and potentially around the world. Each day she must come to work ready to promote a positive, friendly, approachable, relatable, engaged and enthusiastic voice.

Specifically, Miss America will: • Serve as a national spokesperson for the Miss America Organization in furtherance of its mission and vision • As a member of the staff, work as a team member to help develop goals and facilitate the execution of her SII • Travel independently under the direction of a Tour Manager and Promotions Manager • Research, prepare and deliver public appearance presentations, performances and speeches • Serve as a spokesperson and brand ambassador for MAO’s national partners • Research and prepare content such as short videos, blogs, op-eds and/or thought-pieces for media and social/digital outlets • Serve as a voice on timely issues for her generation • Maintain and manage her personal social media accounts in accordance with MAO policy • Be an example to and inspire potential candidates • Perform administrative tasks relevant to her job: email correspondence, expense reports, metric reporting, thank you notes, and other tasks as directed • Help build on recruitment and interest opportunities to bring new women into the fold. • Build on the legacy of Miss America by leaving MAO better than she found it

Miss America is not a celebrity, nor is she a “beauty queen.” Instead, she is a person of character and a representative of service, and an example of what it means to be a giver, not a taker. It is her work that will be celebrated as she uses her job to serve others, promote scholarships and the importance of education, and to make a lasting impact on communities across the nation. When Miss America’s term expires, she will be successful if she has made a measurable, positive difference in the growth of MAO and her SII objectives. Miss America is expected to understand that in this position, she is but one part of an ever-evolving legacy of multi-dimensional women at every level of MAO. Her execution of the job is reflective not just of her, but of the entire organization. Miss America is about building on the past and helping to craft a future of relevancy for this and the next generation of women leaders.

While I am unsure of the context or the exact time this was said, my mentor/best friend, Joscelyne Swift, said “do the hard things.” Those silly four words became our anthem, our catchphrase, and our motto. During my senior year of high school, I played the role “Jo” in a theater adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel, Little Women. In that play, there was a quote that encompassed perfectly what those four words implied,”I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.” It seemed at first glance like an insignificant four words, but rest assured they have motivated me more than any four words ever have. #MISSAMERICA2023

Harrison, Arkansas, is a city in the North Central part of the state that is full of beautiful people. Growing up in Harrison, I spent most of my time dancing and playing sports. I took dance classes in Harrison, and It is where I fell in love with the sport. My entire family has lived in Harrison for as long as I can remember. It Is still a place I call home and always will. The people of Harrison have shaped me into the woman I am today. Harrison is a loving and accepting place for people from all backgrounds and walks of life. The city of Harrison has a community college that allows people to achieve their higher education goals right in their hometown. I have benefitted from the many extracurricular activities that the city of Harrison offers. With two competitive cheerleading gyms in Harrison, I trained to advance my skills so that I could receive a scholarship to the University of Central Arkansas. I am forever grateful to Harrison for helping me achieve the many scholarships I earned in college. Every teacher, coach, and friend has played a part in my journey to the Miss America stage. My love for the Miss America Organization started in Harrison. I met my first Miss Arkansas in the third grade at Eagle Heights Elementary School. Her name was Eudora Mosby, Miss Arkansas 2005. After meeting her in my hometown, I knew I wanted to be Miss Arkansas just like her. My coaches and teachers pushed me to be the best I could be because they knew that I respected and looked up to the women wearing the Miss Arkansas crown. All my senses are alive at home: Through my eyes, Hawai’i encompasses every imaginable biosphere. Our islands are a visual feast, from snow-capped Mauna Kea to sun-drenched Waikiki Beach. I love witnessing the stunning reds, oranges, and yellows of a Haleakalā sunrise 10,000 feet above sea level to the lush forest greens and crystal blue waters standing on the edge of the Nāpali Coast. When I close my eyes and listen, Hawai’i is the land of musical songbirds, rushing trade winds, and ancient chants, echoing the words of our kings and queens and spreading messages of peace and inclusivity. Our food, like our culture, is a melting pot of international cuisines, sharing the flavor and warmth of authentic cultural experiences. When I take a deep breath in, I’m filled with the delectable scents of island blossoms, forest groves, and the salty sea. Hawai’i’s beauty takes my breath away. The Windy City is a vibrant and multicultural city I love to call home. I grew up in the heart of downtown Chicago where I attended the Frances Xavier Warde School right next to Old St. Patrick’s Church, one of only seven buildings to survive the Chicago Fire in 1871, and Holy Name Cathedral. I was a part of the second graduating class from the Chicago High School for the Arts, the city’s first public performing arts school. My parents ensured that I was raised culturally diverse by being a part of organizations like the Lake Shore Chapter of Jack and Jill of America Inc. and dancing at the Chicago Multi-Cultural Dance Center, home of the Hiplet Ballerinas Chicago is known for its unique architecture that can be viewed from the Chicago River; the only river engineered to flow backward. In 1893, the World’s Columbian Exposition, also known as the World’s Fair, was held on the grounds of Chicago’s Jackson Park. The Windy City is not only known for

being windy but also has great food, specifically deep-dish pizza. The million-dollar question when it comes to deep dish pizza is, “Lou Malnati’s? or Giordano’s?”... I’m a LouMalnatis girl! No matter what season it is in Chicago, you will always be entertained. Chicago is home to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, 5th best Orchestra in the World, and sports teams for every major sport. My personal favorites are the Chicago Bears (home of NFL Home of Famer Walter Payton) and the Chicago Bulls (won 6 championships, led by Hall of Famers Michael Jordan, and Scottie Pippen). Chicago is also the home of legends; Chance Rapper, creator of the ABC shows Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy Shondra Rhimes, the 44th President of the United States and the first African American President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, and many more. Katrina Kincade BOSTON My dad once told me, “If you really love Boston, you’ll find a way to come back home.” This was in 2015 when my journey to go to my dream college was taking me to Washington D.C., away from home for the first time. I’m a born-and-raised Bostonian. I spoke on the city’s community access TV channel when I was seven, learned how to use the subway alone when I was 12, received my first summer job through a city program at 14, and was on the Mayor’s Youth Council when I was 17. I’m proud to say that my community helped raise me into the woman I am today. From a young age, I knew I wanted to be a Boston news anchor. Boston is one of the top 10 news markets in America and I admired the journalists who told the stories of the communities that I grew up loving so much. Now at 25, I am honored to work

for CBS Boston as a news reporter and fill-in anchor. The city is made up of so many diverse neighborhoods and people. My favorite part of my job has been to tell the unheard stories of those people, the people who historically didn’t get featured on the news. We didn’t come up with the term “Boston Strong” out of nowhere. People from Boston are resilient, determined, and passionate. My hometown is filled with wicked amounts of pride and love. So if you ever come by, try the pastries at the 24/7 bakery in our Italian district, Bova’s, or some Cape Verdean food in Dorchester. Maybe even try counting the Smoots on the Mass. Growing up, my mom always said “home is where the army sends us!” As a military child, I moved often and had the opportunity to live all over America. Due to this experience, I attended 12 different schools before starting high school, 3 of them were in the “Old North State” of North Carolina! This nontraditional upbringing taught me how to adapt to new environments, to remain calm in the face of adversity, and to greet new people and perspectives with a smile! When I began my college career at Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina became my new home. The beautiful mountain scenery and loving community of Boone has been an integral part of my personal growth and Miss America journey. Communities such as the Appalachian Musical Theatre Club, Honors College, Student Government Association, and the Omicron Kappa Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated made this small mountain town my home!

The city is beautiful and full of community-loving individuals who support our local nonprofits and public-school system. I have learned the value of giving back to my community and enjoying all it has to offer. Edmond is an amazing city full of wonderful people and desirable amenities. Often referred to as the crown jewel of Oklahoma, Edmond offers its people a very high quality of life that includes top-notch education opportunities, beautiful landscapes and it is a place where you always feel safe. The city is always growing and evolving. You can be sure that there is always something on the horizon that is true to Edmond’s motto, “A Great Place to Grow”. However, no matter how much it grows, the people are always the heartbeat of the community.

They truly care about one another, and I have seen this firsthand by serving alongside many great community members that provide for those in need. The “Oklahoma Standard” of caring for others is on display every day in Edmond. The last thing I’ll share is about the amazing experience I had growing up attending school in Edmond. The community is known for its outstanding educational opportunities including its highly ranked public-school district, wonderful private school options, cutting-edge technology center and local university options. I had great experiences attending both Washington Irving Elementary and Oklahoma Christian School where the teachers genuinely care about the educational and spiritual growth of their students. I get to call Edmond, Oklahoma my hometown, and for that, I am blessed. #MISSAMERICA2023

I was born and raised in Leesport, Pennsylvania, a small borough located in Berks County, Pennsylvania. But even with just around 2,000 residents, my small town instilled big dreams in me, and has provided me even bigger love and support since representing them as Miss Pennsylvania. The education and mentorship I received at Schuylkill Valley High School was integral to the person I am today, fulfilling my lifelong dream of competing on the Miss America stage. People travel from all over the state to visit the Leesport Farmers Market for farmfresh produce and a true, homemade Pennsylvania Dutch meal. I go almost every Wednesday with my dad. Berks County is the perfect combination of city and country, and agriculture and industry. It’s the birthplace of Taylor Swift, the home of the snack pretzel, and at one time, was a prime shopping spot dubbed the “Outlet Capital of the World”. I’d be remiss not to mention my second home and favorite city in the world, Philadelphia, where I spent my college years, became a (slightly) obnoxious Philly sports fan, and joined a rich,100-year history serving as Miss Philadelphia 2019 and 2020. In a beautiful, full-circle way, my very first local title in the MAOTeen Organization was my hometown title, Miss Greater Reading’s Outstanding Teen; my last local title in the Miss America Organization was Miss Greater Reading. I have always been, and will forever be, so proud to be from Berks County.

Jill Dudley MYRTLE BEACH Growing up in the Myrtle Beach area was always fun and exciting as a child! There are beach stores on every corner, golf courses along the coast, ice cream shops are open year-round, and each night you can listen to the humming of cicadas outside your porch. The Pee Dee region of South Carolina has a special place in my heart because of my love for the people in it. I was raised in a community that seemed like a big city - but once the tourists left at the end of September, it became quite small! I went from first grade up to high school in the town of Socastee and later graduated from Coastal Carolina University in Conway, SC. I spent many summers in Surfside Beach collecting shells, learning to paddle board, and spending as much time in the sun as possible. South Carolina is known for its beautiful beaches along the coastline and there is nothing better than a Carolina sunset with its colors of orange, pink, purple, and yellow. When I am not at the beach you can find me at my alma mater cheering on the CCU Chanticleers whose colors are teal and bronze, which represent the sea and shore.

Myrtle Beach is a huge tourist destination along the east coast. The city hosts over 15 million visitors every calendar year. With an average of 215 sunny days a year, it’s no wonder that many people come to one of the Palmetto State’s most popular cities. If you want to work on your golf swing, Myrtle Beach is the mini golf capital of the world with more mini golf courses per square mile than anywhere else! It also has more than 100 golf courses in the city and is home to various professional and amateur golf tournaments year-round. My hometown is a vacation spot for many, but it’s where I planted my roots. As Miss South Carolina, I’ve been able to sing the national anthem for my alma mater, Coastal Carolina University, and model for local boutiques, such as the Foxy Lady. I’ve made numerous TV and news appearances for local stations - but most importantly, I’ve shared my passion for Miss America and Shatter the Cycle with my community. I love my life at the beach!

Fun Fact

The world’s first frozen margarita machine was invented in Dallas, Texas, Dr. Pepper was also invented in Texas in 1885, and the nation’s fastest stretch of road is located between Austin and San Antonio, with a speed limit of 85mph! I was born and raised in McKinney, Texas, and attended Prosper ISD for all twelve years of public school. Both towns had small town feels, farm land, and even tractors driving on the road! Growing up, I participated in theater, choir, dance team (don’t ask me to do my splits), won state championships in university interscholastic league competitions, and ranked nationally in speech and debate. At the wise old age of 16, I convinced myself that Texas was boring and flat. I bought into the idea that the only places to be successful were large cities like LA and New York, and the Texas culture simply couldn’t compete. However, a decade later, I have the honor of falling in love with the Lone Star state all over again. From the delicious korean barbeque in 204

Carrollton, Texas, to my favorite coffee shop, La La Kind Cafe in Addison, to the mountains of big bend, rolling hills and wineries in Fredericksburg, and the beaches of South Padre Island, Texas has it all. Texas entered 2021 as the world’s 9th largest economy based on GDP. Many Dallas Fort Worth suburbs are among the nation’s fastest growing cities and lead the nation in population growth. With the rise of business and population, comes an immense opportunity for growth, progress, and good ole fun. I’ve had the pleasure of traveling more than 35,000 miles across my great state in just five short months as Miss Texas and have met hundreds and thousands of Texans. I can attest, it’s always bigger and better in Texas!

“World-class education on a personal scale” is the tagline for Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management and it could not be more true. During my two years in Vanderbilt’s Master of Business Administration program, I gained a network of colleagues who have become friends for life, and professors who have become lifelong mentors. One of the most rewarding parts of my Owen experience was becoming involved in campus leadership. During my time in Nashville, I served as the Director of Finance for the Marketing Association, the Secretary of the Christian Business Association, and as a Senator in Student Government. Additionally, the diverse backgrounds of all my classmates were an asset. We had students from around the world, students who had served or were serving in the armed forces, and students who had pursued careers in various industries before returning to school for their MBA. I enjoyed hearing about their unique perspectives during class discussions. For me, choosing Vanderbilt was an obvious choice. I had always dreamed of attending a top-ranked business school, but the location set Vanderbilt apart. Nashville is the center of the country music universe, but also showcases professional sports teams and is home to major corporations. The intersection of entertainment and professional possibilities afforded me the opportunity to intern in strategy with the Nashville Predators professional hockey team and at Mars Petcare in brand management. I grew up in the legendary Dodge City, a community filled with cowboy history and lore. This community enabled me to grow, and become the person I am today. When you visit my neck-of-the-woods, you become a part of that legend that is still evolving to this day. I also found a home in Hays. This well rounded community has a little bit of everything, and FHSU was an institution where I knew I could thrive. I wanted to find a place where I could just be Ayanna, not another head in a lecture hall. This university allowed me to grow in ways I never imagined and pursue my passions, both academic and personal. For an angler like myself, the fishing in Northwest Kansas is immaculate and was a great way to find a slice of inner peace. On the academic side, I was awarded a full-ride scholarship and was able to continue my journey as a member of the dance team.

Heart and hustle make Kansans amazing. There’s always someone to be kind to you, and everyone is willing to give you the shirt off of their back. I aim to bring that heart and hustle to everything I do as Miss Kansas. For those that would like to adventure to Kansas, I always recommend the Boot Hill Museum in Dodge City, to immerse yourself in the Kansas agriculture scene (harvest isn’t just a time of the year around here, it’s truly an event to behold), find yourself a great hole-in-the-wall taco place (there’s too many to choose from), and to ride off into one of Kansas’ famous sunsets. If you’re a music lover, you have to check out the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield. This world-famous event brings bluegrass musicians from across the globe to compete, to play, and to learn from one another. All in all, Kansas is an incredibly diverse place. We have a melting pot of cultures, communities and lifestyles that means there’s a little something for everyone here in the center of it all. #MISSAMERICA2023

I never thought I would be the 85th Miss South Carolina. Until the last few years, I would have never dreamed of going to Miss America. As an avid soccer player, I pictured my life as a professional athlete. However, once I became part of local community theater and Socastee Singers Show Choir in college, I realized I had a love for the arts. Through performing, I found confidence. That new-found confidence led me to win my first Miss America Preliminary competition, Miss Teal and Bronze, back in 2019. Within the three years of pursuing the job of Miss South Carolina, I gained scholarships, friendships, service opportunities, and a new perspective on what I wanted in life. Now four years later, I’ve received over $70,000 in scholarships through the Miss America Organization, which has paid off my undergraduate debt and my paralegal program. I now have the opportunity to go to law school! In addition to the scholarship money, I have gained a platform to share my passion with my personal initiative, Shatter the Cycle: Supporting Survivors and Ending Rape Culture. As a rape survivor myself, I know firsthand that America has a problem with sexual assault. Nearly half a million of us- 1 in 6 women and 1 in 10 men are sexually assaulted every year. I’ve taken Shatter the Cycle all across South Carolina and to the Capitol in Washington, DC... and now, it is time to take it to the Miss America stage. My assault has not defined me, but given me a drive to help survivors who have lost their voice by becoming a criminal prosecutor for sexual assault and domestic abuse cases. I’d like to give a big thank you to those who have helped me make it to this point. I would not be the woman I am today without my family, friends, the Miss South Carolina Board, and of course, my faith in the Lord.

I have evolved from victim to survivor to advocate.... and soon to be prosecutor. This is my journey, but it has only just begun.

City: Dallas, TX Field of Study: Juris Doctoral Graduate from SMU Law School May 2022, B.A. in Human Rights and Sociology with Honors This past May, I traded my sash and crown for red and blue velvet regalia, and a fancy picasso hat! I received my juris doctorate degree at Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law in Dallas, Texas. I never thought I would walk the stage. As a child, my family relied on food programs and experienced housing insecurity. Neither of my parents graduated from college and both of them worked two jobs each to ensure we had food to eat. I had trouble imagining myself even going to college, let alone graduate from law school. Today, despite all odds, I have broken the chains of self doubt and poverty thanks to the support of my community. I now

have the privilege of giving back to those who poured into me. Through my international nonprofit, consulting business, legal advocacy, and local government position in Dallas, I help grow and build-up students, children, and families. I provide scholarships to children in Southeast Asia and first generation students in Texas. I write policies that address anti-hate and racial violence for the Dallas Mayor. I have grown a million followers on social media for my candid and comedic content that encourages my audience to be their authentic selves. And finally, through my consulting business and media partnerships with Fortune 500 businesses, I have generated more than $400,000 in revenue, 60% percent of which went to paying off my $220,000 of student loans.

I consider my journey a fairytale. As Cinderella, I grew up in difficult circumstances, only to come out more resilient and strong thanks to my fairy godmothers (you!). Thank you, and here’s to more wishes being granted!

Elizabeth Lynch WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

City: Morgantown, WV Field of Study: M.S. in Food and Nutritional Science

My time in the Miss America Organization has afforded me the opportunity to excel in academia. Because of the scholarships received, I will be able to graduate ten years of higher education completely debt free. I fell in love with agricultural sustainability research while studying at Delaware State University and became an undergraduate research assistant. During this time, I had the opportunity to study abroad in Belize under a USDANIFA internship where I performed soil, air, and water quality research. I graduated with my B.S. in Animal and Poultry Science with a minor in biology in the Spring of 2020. My post-graduate education started at West Virginia University in the fall of 2020. My research focus at WVU was applied poultry nutrition and feed manufacture research. In my graduate research assistantship, I facilitated multiple research projects under the direction of Dr. Joseph Moritz,

Coming home to West Virginia University to obtain my master’s degree gave me the opportunity to work with West Virginia’s number one agricultural commodity, make an impact in the poultry industry, and appreciate the rich history of this state even more. assisted in maintaining the well-being of thousands of birds, and performed teaching assistant duties in four classes such as advanced nutrition and poultry production. I have been accepted to Texas Tech University to pursue a PhD in One Health Science with a focus in food animal parasitology. The One Health Science PhD at TTU currently is the only one of its kind in the United States. They have allowed me to take a deferment of my admissions in order to serve my state as Miss West Virginia and potentially our country as Miss America. With this degree, my ambition is to become a professor at a land-grant university with a three-way split appointment in teaching, research, and extension. #MISSAMERICA2023
