Top 10 moments as Miss Montana:

10. Driving my incredible 2020 RAV4 from Ressler Motors for the last two years! I have been so blessed by its reliability, cargo space, and worry-free Toyota Care! 9. Attending the Medora Musical was the first time I was officially recognized in public as Miss Montana! This was the moment everything started to feel real. 8. Singing the national anthem at the Montana State Capitol for the beginning of the senate session. Not only was this an incredible experience to visit with our lawmakers, but I also met some wonderful people who continued to be close friends. 7. Flying to Uncasville, Connecticut in September and representing “Montana Agriculture” in the iconic Show Me Your Shoes Parade to celebrate the 100th Year Anniversary of Miss America! 6. Attending the Miles City Bucking Horse Sale to sing the national anthem for a crowd of over one thousand, then ride in the parade alongside some of the cast of Yellowstone! 5. Attending the induction of some incredible members into the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame while singing, praying, and celebrating Montana’s western heritage. 4. Visiting with Special Olympics athletes in Billings during their summer games! Some of my favorite parts of the job were talking and sharing stories with all the different types of people you get to meet while in this position. 3. Visiting over 70 schools on my Crown to Classroom Tour: teaching martial arts and encouraging kids of all ages to have a Sense of Defense. 2. Competing at Miss America! It was an incredible honor to sing my talent piece, The Jewel Song, on the Miss America stage while representing the Big Sky State. The memories and friendships from Miss America are the kind that will last forever. 1. Riding in the Battle of the Little Bighorn reenactment after singing the national anthem and speaking for the wreath dedication at the Battlefield National Monument. Two years ago, in the middle of the craziness, the Lord saw fit to grant me the title of Miss Montana. I hope you believe I served with humility, passion, and gratitude. I hope you think of my time with excitement and joy. The past two years have not always been easy, but I will forever be grateful for the hard lessons I learned, the memories I made, and the opportunities I was given. I prepared for 6 years to become Miss Montana, then did my very best for two years to be her… But I never prepared myself for how I was going to let her go. I have held this title longer than any other in Miss Montana history. I reigned through a pandemic, through massive change within the program, and through the centennial year of Miss America. Now, it is extremely difficult to say goodbye. As I look back on this insane two-year journey with my sparkly hat, there are too many people to thank. Michael, thank you for standing by my side and weathering this journey together. It hasn’t been an easy one, but I cannot wait to marry you in two weeks! Mom, thank you for driving me to all those practices when I first decided to compete in the Miss America Organization over 7 years ago (and thanks for everything since!). Momma Jan, thank you for taking in a lost Miss Montana and always being there for me, no matter what I needed. Amber, thank you for always letting me call and talk on the long car trips across the state. Alissa, thank you for being the sister I never had. Annika, thank you for sharing this experience with me through COVID and everything else in the last two years. Miss America sisters, thank you for making this worth it. Every sponsor, volunteer, guide, friend, appearance coordinator, and helper along the way, thank you for everything. I could not have done it without all of you. To the next girl who gets this incredible job: your life is going to change forever. Being Miss Montana will force you to grow in ways you never could have imagined. You will get to ride in parades, sign autographs, and be recognized in the grocery store! You will go to Miss America, and meet 50 new best friends. You will smile so hard your cheeks hurt. You will grow, you will cry, and you will become stronger because of it. I hope you go to every appearance with a joyful heart, and take advantage of every opportunity given to you because of the crown you wear. I hope you remember that being authentic is way cooler than being perfect. I hope you always remember the honor, and pride, that you carry with you- whether you are wearing your sash or not. Stay kind, stay humble, and enjoy the ride! You are going to love it.

Montana, it has been my honor to serve you,

Jessica Criss: your Miss Montana 2020 & 2021 “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” - Romans 8:28

Miss America 2022

Emma Broyles is a second generation Alaskan born and raised in Anchorage. She is a junior at Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University where she studies biomedical sciences and voice performance. After graduating, Emma plans to attend medical school to become a dermatologist, using her $109,000 in scholarships she has earned from the Miss America Organization. Emma has spent over half of her life advocating for people with intellectual disabilities through her work with Special Olympics Alaska. Her older brother, Brendan, has Down syndrome and is a source of inspiration for her. When Brendan became a Special Olympics athlete at the age of 8, Emma started attending weekly track and field practices with him. She and her younger brother, Ben, enjoyed helping at the practices by chasing down balls during the tennis ball throw and running laps with the athletes. She grew up learning from these athletes, allowing her to develop an understanding of the importance of inclusion and empathy. This understanding drove

her to continue her involvement through Partners Club, a school program through Special Olympics Alaska. There, Emma served as co-president and had the chance to see relationships bloom between students with and without intellectual disabilities. She realized the significance in teaching students about inclusion and equipping them with the necessary tools to be leaders of social change in their communities. As Miss Alaska, she toured schools to spread the message of inclusion, working closely with Special Olympics school programs in her hometown. Miss America serves to demolish stereotypes about women and show the world that outward appearance should never determine someone’s worth. Similarly, Special Olympics strives to promote an Inclusion Revolution, encouraging people all around the world to celebrate one another’s abilities rather than focusing on our differences. Special Olympics works to spread compassion and acceptance in a way that can unite the world. As Miss America, Emma will continue to act as an advocate for Special Olympics on an even wider scale to ultimately mend communities one connection at a time.

I was a senior in high school when a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit my hometown. As the floor shook and the walls rattled around me, I dove under a table and hung on for dear life. Everything around me had shifted. When I’m asked about what was going through my head when I was named Miss America 2022, I’m reminded of that feeling during the earthquake. The big, shiny stage on which I was standing no longer felt stable. It all felt like a dream. I heard the audience cheering, felt the crown as Camille Schrier pinned it to my shaking head. Tears filled my eyes as I looked up, watching the confetti begin to fall. I remember turning around to face my Miss America classmates, unsure of what to do or what just happened. They held me up, fixed my crown, and wiped my tears, bringing me back to reality. They reassured me and celebrated with me and on that night, I truly understood the meaning of the Miss America sisterhood. Having the Forever Miss Americas on the stage with me on this life-changing night reminded me of the rich history and powerful impact the Miss America Organization has had on all of us who have ever stepped foot on a Miss America stage from locals to nationals. I felt humbled by their presence, knowing that it’s up to me to honor their legacy and that of the Miss America Organization as we head into the next 100 years. Years from now, I hope to look back at 2022 and feel that I made a difference as Miss America. That we will all be kinder to one another, and not just to those with whom we agree. That we will be more accepting of others, especially those with whom we have the least in common. And most of all, that we will have compassion for those we understand the least. I’m honored to be Miss America 2022 and look forward to my year of representing this country that my grandparents chose and representing this organization that has made such a tremendous impact on the lives of young women for the past 100 years.
