Sabaidee pi mai readers! Cover Story – Lao Elephants and their Mahouts. On a lighter topic, we visit the new Kuang Si Butterfly Park in Luang Prabang. In Laos, there’s great diversity in the butterfly species. This new park aims to do conservation, research and share this knowledge and beauty with everyone. Along with the many species of butterflies, the park is filled with over 100 varieties of tropical plants. The local people in the area worked to build the park and building materials such as bamboo or wood scraps are from the area. For ASEAN Connect, we take you back in time to a grand kingdom called Mrauk U. This kingdom of Myanmar ruled from about 1430AD – 1780AD. During their reign, many pagodas and buddhas were built to honor the successes of the kingdom. You can climb to the hilltop and gaze and a sea of pagodas. After that, visit the largest one called Koe Thaung Temple and try to see all of the 90,000 buddha images.

French Cuisine UN Meet and Greet In March, the UN office in Vientiane hosted a Meet and Greet event and members of the press were invited. It was an informal yet informative event held in the wonderful garden of the One UN office. Many staff members of various UN departments were present to network with local press and share updates of their work towards achieving Millennium Development Goals. Some of the departments mingling with the press were the World Food Program, UNICEF, UNDP, UNFAO and UNACT. The attendees were also treated to a creative performance by the local puppet team called Kao Niew. http://www.la.one.un.org/

On March 19, 2015, over a thousand chefs in many restaurants and in 150 countries around the world honored the French gastronomy through the project “Goût de France/Good France”. In Laos, many chefs took part in the event in Vientiane and Luang Prabang and helped the public discover the special flavors that characterize French cuisine. At the French Embassy of Laos, chefs in Vientiane representing French cuisine came together to present a stunning seven course meal. Each course paired with French wine provided by a local wine shop. On top of that, half of the proceeds are donated to the Lao Disabled Women’s organization.

What investment activities are planned from now until 2020? From now until 2020, we want to community to become more involved in our development. We need the community to be directly involved and bring their expertise and investments for building hospitals and schools. Currently, we have Saysettha Hospital which was developed by the community. Next, we want to achieve development and investment for building schools. With improved schools and education, our local community can have the opportunity to improve their skills to more competitive in the global market. How do you think AEC integration will help boost the Lao economy? The aim is for Lao PDR to become a hub, geographically and economically within ASEAN. We hope it will bring increased tourism and foreign business investment. What would you recommend to businesses looking to invest in Laos? Agriculture and tourism are two key industries I recommend for foreign investor. Our business community is continuing to expand cooperation to work with the ASEAN economic community. Could you recommend to our readers some good Lao New Year’s activities? I invite you to visit Pakse or Luang Prabang. Both of these cities have preserved their cultural heritage. The Pi Mai festival in Luang Prabang has been practiced with a long tradition. There you will get to experience many of the traditional activities. If you are lucky, you will have a chance to bless the Prabang Buddha with water. The Prabang is symbol of our culture and heritage.

But if you are looking for a more a colorful ceremony and unique celebration, Luang Prabang is just the right place to visit and join the great event during this period. Highlights of the 3-day festival includes the procession of Prabang, one of Laos’ most celebrated Buddha images, which will be carried in procession from the former Royal Palace to Vat Mai where it will be temporarily installed for people to pour water on it as a blessing ceremony. The event of Pi Mai Lao in Luang Prabang also includes the mascot parade of “Pu Yer Ya Yer” and “Singkham Singkeo”. Pu Yer Ya Yer are demigods and their pets were raised as adopted kids, believed to be ancestors of Lao people. Also a highlight of the procession is the famous beauty contest of “Miss New Year” called “Nang Sanhkhan”. After the official celebrating days, local people and tourists will have fun getting soaked and playing with splashing water for the entire week.

Tropical Laos is recognised globally as being extraordinarily rich in its species diversity. Where better a place to open Kuang Si Butterfly Park focusing on conservation, research and education. The founding creators Ineke and Olaf, both devout nature lovers since childhood are on a mission to show the unique diversity of butterflies in Laos, a species that has long captured the heart and soul of mankind. Crossing the wooden footbridge one is immediately struck by the tremendous amount of planning and energy that must have gone into the design and building of this haven downstream from Kuang Si Waterfalls. After collecting a ticket from the friendly volunteers I was introduced to Ineke who would guide our small group around the gardens. Also available is a fun and engaging guide book introducing the different areas in French and English.

beautiful yellow colour when mixed with water were used to create the landscape gardens which curve and flow harmoniously with the lie of the land. Hydropower is utilised for electricity which gives the natural pressure needed to water the plants. The compost toilets are beautifully designed as are all the buildings working together with nature.

Work began 11 months before the opening in December 2013, with Olaf and Ineke each armed with a shovel and they began to dig. Over the next few weeks their team grew to around 7 workers per day rising to 12-14 during the last 3 months when the netting and bamboo supports of the butterfly enclosure itself were erected. The building materials were sourced locally where possible. Left-overs, bamboo, river stones and lime sand which turns a

The plants are locally sourced and native to Luang Prabang, each one selected for their attractive qualities to butterflies. When planting the aim was to mimic nature and create a natural habitat for the plants so they will thrive in their new home. Passing through the orchid garden, every last detail has been attended to. Just before the enclosure there is a charming waterfall tucked into the hillside, the perfect place to gain a sense of calm before entering the magical world of butterflies. Stepping into the enclosure you become at once encapsulated by the tall, lush foliage, rainy season is an especially good time for butterflies, the strong sunshine and array of nutritious plant material supports a variety of life with over 100 different types during wet season although butterflies are busy breeding all year round! Wander and absorb the superb display of local flora and fauna whilst learning about the life cycle and behavior of butterflies. Spotting what looked like a moving leaf was a butterfly in disguise, one of their many tricks of survival and if you are really lucky a butterfly may come to rest on your skin. Butterflies’ taste buds reside in their feet and are 200 times stronger than humans so your salty skin may be just the remedy for a hot day. There is also a fish spa where you can dip your feet in the water and meet the tiny fish who like to nibble your toes. This is a tropical paradise!

Here you can see tiny eggs, pupae, and caterpillars at different phases of their life cycle completing the incredible metamorphosis which still remains one of life’s great mysteries. The future vision at Kuang Si Butterfly Park is to secure funding for education projects at local schools providing field trips and written materials for young students educating them in a fun and engaging way so they learn firsthand how precious their local environment is and how vital it is to conserve such heritage for future generations. Free transport will be provided. It is clear that the value of biodiversity is a huge

asset to Laos in this growing culture of ecotourism therefore protection of these wild and wonderful lands is paramount to the economic development of the country. Children are the leaders of the future and encouraging them to love and respect diversity in nature and understand the value of conservation may help prevent the over exploitation of natural resources allowing future generations to enjoy their special country. Finishing the visit with a freshly made baguette and cool drink was tranquility itself soaking up the peaceful atmosphere of the idyllic gardens. Life is too short to be rushing around all day so for now just float like a butterfly and bask in the sunshine.

Once the heart of a triumphant empire, Mrauk U is another ancient town that leaves behind evidence of how religious devotion can lead to the construction of veritable heaven-on-earth cities to be enjoyed by the faithful. And though Mrauk U has declined since medieval times, many traces of its previous glory still remain.

Rakhine is today known as one of Myanmar’s geographic states, but it was formerly known as the Arakan Kingdom, and was not only one of the wealthiest kingdoms of the past, but also one of major Southeast Asian trading towns on the Bay of Bengal. The kingdom can be roughly divided into four periods: Dhanyawaddy (1507 BC - 327 AD); Vesali (327 AD - 818 AD); Lemro (818 AD - 1430 AD); and Mrauk U, which was the last kingdom before the decline in 1784 AD. After the exhausting eight-hour journey to arrive at Mrauk U, I began the next morning with a climb up the hilltop in order to inhale the fresh morning air while observing the sea of old pagodas gradually appear from under the morning mists. From up here this beautiful kingdom seems heavenly.

Shite-Thaung Paya Temple is normally the first place any guide will take you in town. Built in 1531 AD by King Min Bin, at the peak of the kingdom’s prosperity, the temple commemorates the king’s conquest of Bengal. The temple’s main shrine is a central bell-shaped stupa surrounded by four smaller stupas at the corners, and a multitude of even-smaller stupas surrounding them. But the must-see highlight is the three layers of tunnel corridors that encircle the main hall and contain countless reliefs of Buddha images and other religious sculptures along both sides of the walkway. The name of the temple literally means The Temple of 84,000 Buddha Images, and this is one of the most stunning places I’ve ever seen in Myanmar. Now If 84,000 Buddha images are not enough to make your jaw drop, make a trip

to Koe Thaung Temple and be amazed by 90,000 Buddha images. This largest temple in Mrauk U was built in 1553 AD by King Dikkha - the son of King Min Bin who built the first temple mentioned. The temple here has the main stupa located in the center of a square basement measuring 77 meters on each side, and is surrounded by five rows of many smaller stupas. The corridor that leads around the 4 sides of the monument is magnificently decorated by crowds of Buddha images, most of which are now covered with moss and lichens. In Mrauk U visitors will be amazed not only by relics from the past, but also by the local people’s way of life. This is a life that revolves around faith, and its slow pace seems quite out of step with the hectic modern world. But that is also what makes it so special.

How to get there The most convenient and fastest way to get to Mrauk U is to fly with Air Bagan from Yangon to Sittwe, the coastal city next to the Gulf of Bengal on the west coast of Myanmar. From there it takes another 8 hours by ferry along the Kaladan River to reach Mrauk U. Another option is to go by car from Sittwe, but the road trip is as time consuming as traveling by river because of the road conditions. The ferry to Mrauk U departs from Sittwe jetty every Mon/Tue/Thu/Sat at 7:00 am, and travels back from Mrauk U to Sittwe every Tue/Wed/Fri/Sun at 7:00 am. If you want to avoid the strict schedule of the boat trip, Zarmani Creative Tour can arrange for you a road trip to Mrauk U, with an English speaking guide, and the necessary permissions from the government to travel by road that foreign tourists must have before making this journey by automobile. www.zamani.com

Where to sleep Mrauk U is a small and sleepy town with few choices of accommodations. Hotels with mid-range rates and acceptable quality include the Nawarat Hotel (maungayelin@gmail.com) and Vesali Resort Hotel (vesaliresort@gmail.com, vesali@myanmar.com.mm) where you can climb up to the viewpoint of the mountain located behind the resort.

For the land of a million elephants the plight of the elephant population, now below 1000, is critical. The elephant population is in rapid decline and is estimated to be extinct in Lao within the next 30 years. (The expected life span of the current adult elephant population.) This is why finding an eco-friendly and financially sustainable way of life is so important for both the mahout and elephants. Conservation Tourism is the only way forward for Lao to keep and re-populate the elephant population.

The forest has been their home, place of work and the reason for their existence, with deforestation and mechanization of the timber industry, a mahout cannot afford to keep or breed an elephant. A mature elephant consumes between 200 - 250 kg of food a day, plus equivalent amounts of water. They can live in the wild, for 80 years, begin to mature at 17, but are unable to carry large weights or loads until the age of 30. Most of the elephants currently in Lao are between 35 – 50 years of age. The males being too aggressive, especially during their musk season, are not worked or kept. The females are the preferred animals to work with. A pregnancy lasts 22 months and a calf is weaned at age 4, allowing a working elephant to breed can bankrupt a family. The elephants working in the camps and tourism industries are females of prime breeding age, but a shortage of income and steadily declining work opportunities prevents pregnancies.

Mahouts are the custodians of elephant husbandry, training, veterinary and dietary knowledge. The knowledge and skills were passed from father to son; elephants were often passed from father to son. With the future of traditional work for elephants fast disappearing, many sons and fathers see no future in being a mahout or for keeping an elephant. Expanding the role of the elephant in tourism is essential in creating a transitional career and a sense of future with income, for the survival for elephant and mahout.

Elephant Camps, Mahout Experiences and Conservation Centre’s are essential and pivotal to creating this future. At present management standards within many of the Tourism Elephant Camps are very diverse. There does not exist in Lao, agreed standards for managing the welfare and work environment of elephants.

They have day and overnight facilities. This camp has rescued elephants that it has purchased from their owners and leases elephants from the local villages and Mahouts. It’s latest purchase, 2 years ago, was an injured pregnant female that has now has a healthy 2-year-old male calf Maxi. Maxi and his mother are housed separately over the river and penned during the operational hours of the camp for their and your protection. You can ride, bath and feed the elephants at this camp. The camp has incorporated and aligned its management practices with the international code of elephant welfare standards. (If you have concerns regarding riding elephants or their upkeep, please access the Elefant Asia website and their brochure ‘Read before you Ride’. www.elefantasia.com.) Mahouts must work with their elephant for at least 5 years to form a working bond. At this camp, they all have worked with their elephants for 10 years or more. You can see how comfortable they are in each other’s company. The Mahout and elephant bond is an intimate and personal experience.

The Caravan will travel 630 Km, over 2 months, to educate the local and tourist population of Lao. With plays, puppets, education and the long forgotten spectacular of an elephant caravan, 12 elephants will traverse 5 provinces of northern Lao. The caravan will culminate with the traditional elephant parade down the main street of Luang Prabang to mark the beginning and end of the celebrations for the cities 20th Anniversary as a UNESCO site. The caravan is not just an attraction and a spectacular sight. The plan is to use the impetuous it creates to stimulate the creation of an industry code for elephant management in Lao tourism. Its roundtable symposium in Luang Prabang in December brings together stakeholders from the different sectors. Tourism Operators, Elephant Conservation Experts, Mahouts and Government Bodies will meet for the first time to establish guidelines for the health and survival of these magnificent, but gentle animals.

It’s a bit of a drive from town, but the water park is by far the most unique place to cool down in Vientiane. Located just before the Friendship Bridge, the water park is a great day trip for families, as it has several dedicated kids’ zones, with child-sized fountains and slides. Parents can look on while eating or drinking at the huge poolside restaurant, or the adults can join in the fun, as there are water slides to accommodate the big kids as well. Bring an inner tube and race your friends down the parallel slides, or just float around enjoying the views of the Mekong and the Friendship Bridge. The pool is open into the evening, so it’s a great place to watch the sunset and have a drink after a day of swimming.

Settha Palace is one of the classiest hotels in Vientiane, and the pool is equally posh. The entrance fee is a bit more of a splurge than some of the other city pools, but the atmosphere will truly make it feel like a getaway. The resort-style pool is surrounded by lawn chairs, and fresh towels are available. Wi-fi is free for pool guests, so it’s an easy place to spend an afternoon, whether at work or play. Some of Settha Palace’s top-notch food is also available poolside if you feel like a snack after splashing around.

The Landmark Mekhong Riverside Hotel pool is a lesser-known newcomer to the Vientiane pool scene, located at the new riverside hotel, just up from Don Chan Palace. The sparkling new ground-level pool wraps around the building and features a whirlpool off to the side. Pool membership packages are available for frequent visitors, or joint packages with the hotel gym. Free Wi-Fi.
