Hello There ... It gives me great pleasure to introduce myself as the new Editor of Sabaya magazine’s English edition. I don’t reckon ranting about myself and turning this little note into a memoir is a good idea so let me tell you all about this month’s issue. A slight revamp is in the pipeline, and you will notice the difference in the upcoming months as we shift our focus to a fresh, young approach whilst maintaining the hallmark of Sabaya as a luxury fashion and lifestyle publication. One of the greatest gifts of this job for me is getting to know many of the incredible people who live among us, like hidden jewels in the desert. This month Fashion TV’s Vice President Romain reveals all in a one-to-one chat while multi talented glass artist Giuse Maggi tells us about her artistic ‘revenge.’ Our fashion exclusives this month are Bahrain-based South African designer Thelna Esterhuizen and H&M’s “Conscious’ designer Catarina Midby. A Do-It-Yourself section and Tech review has been introduced. Dr Nada Jawahery gives an insight into Bahrain’s biggest health problem and gives tips on staying fit through the daily humdrum. Finally, summer is just around the corner and the latest Spring-Summer 2013 collection from designers around the world have been showcased to keep you fashionistas in the loop with the trends of the season. It’s that time of the year to slip into your swimsuits and head to the beach, so don’t forget to use sunscreen. I’d love to hear any of your comments or suggestions as I start on this wonderful journey with the rest of the Sabaya team. Happy reading!

Court Drama: Actress Lindsay Lohan’s estranged father Michael has lashed out at her lawyer Mark Heller for cashing on his daughter’s “notoriety”. Michael forced Heller to cut short a press conference outside a courthouse on Monday. “’What are you still doing here?’ Michael asked Heller. ‘This guy is trying to cash in on my daughter’s notoriety for his own professional interests’”, contactmusic.com quoted Michael as saying. Lindsay has to undergo 18 months of psychotherapy to get free from all illegal substances including drugs.

Threatened: Hollywood actor Charlie Sheen claimed his ex-wife Denise Richards and their daughters Sam and Lola found a threatening note and a knife outside their home. The objects were found soon after the 47-year-old blasted a known children’s school for allegedly allowing Sam to be bullied. “My daughters had the pleasure of discovering a knife,” contactmusic.com quoted Sheen as saying. Sheen replied to the post that he tweeted a few days back. The post reads: “Here’s why people suck, a group of mindless people have targeted Richards and the girls with bullying tactics as a response to my call to arms.” He also urged people to leave his family alone.

Stewart, 22, caused quite a stir when she was caught cheating on Pattinson with Rupert Sanders, her 42-year-old married director for ‘Snow White and the Huntsman.’ The controversy blurred the lines between the lover’s relationship in real-life. Though the duo reconciled last fall, they continue living in the public spotlight, while Meyer can keep her life privately behind the book and movie fame.

It was tough making Avatar: James Cameron has revealed that he had it tough making ‘Avatar’ as compared to Sir Peter Jackson with the ‘Lord of the Rings’ The 59-year-old filmmaker, who is planning to direct Avatar 2, said in an interview with Life Goes Strong that he has spoken to Jackson about the challenges of creating a film not based on a novel, Stuff.co.nz reported. He added that he is deep into the second movie and living in Pandora, which is the fictional universe he created for the film.

Hand- in-hand: George Clooney and Stacy Keibler held hands as they headed to dinner in Berlin over the weekend, quashing rumours of their alleged break-up. The 33-year-old beauty recently flew off to the German capital to be with her beau while he films “The Monument’s Men.” The couple enjoyed dinner with Clooney’s pals Matt Damon and producer Grant Heslov at Grill Royal on Saturday, the New York Post reported. Black and White nursery for Baby K: Socialite Kim Kardashian, who is expecting her first child with rapper Kanye West in July, is planning to create a black and white nursery for her baby. “Kardashian was gushing about her nursery plans while carefully selecting gifts for her baby registry with sisters Khloe and Kourtney at Bel Bambini in West Hollywood,” femalefirst.co.uk quoted a source as saying. “She mainly looked at simple clothing, nothing too girly,” the source added. Kim was also spotted taking pictures of furniture that reflected her desired colour palette to show to West.

I made Justin Bieber Cry: The pretty brunette actress made an appearance on David Letterman’s chat show on Monday and once in the hotseat Selena didn’t hesitate to poke fun at Justin over their failed romance joking that she made him cry. Show host David said: “Last time you were here, you were with a Justin Bieber. That’s not going on now?” Selena smiled as she replied: “No, I’m single. I’m so good.” David then responded by saying: “Now, the last time he was on, he and I got into a conversation and he said something and I said something, and then he said something and I said something, and I made him cry.” Selena then quipped: “Well then, that makes two of us.”

Katy Perry has split from John Mayer – Again. This is the third time the pair has split. The Fireworks star – who has been dating the singersongwriter since last August – has pulled the plug on their relationship, according to a US magazine. But friends say the latest split is not likely to be for good. The couple split after two weeks of dating last summer and then again in October, when the 28-year-old beauty reportedly told him to lose her number unless he was prepared to commit.

Sad over K-Stew’s unhappy ending: The Twilight Saga’s author Stephenie Meyer has revealed that she is saddened over Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s traumatic and very public love trials.

I nearly died, says Paltrow: The actress opened up with the Daily Mail for a very candid interview on Sunday’s You magazine today, where Paltrow reveals that she suffered a miscarriage during the pregnancy of her third child.

10|11 2013 April

“My children ask me to have a baby all the time. And you never know, I could squeeze one more in. I am missing my third. I’m thinking about it,” Paltrow said. “But I had a really bad experience when I was pregnant with my third. It didn’t work out and I nearly died. So I am like, ‘Are we good here or should we go back and try again?’

Getting in shape together: They’re not just former high school rivals onscreen but also workout buddies in real life. High School Musical co-stars Ashely Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens made their way to a West Hollywood gym on Tuesday morning dressed in form-fitting workout attire. The fetching pair kept it low-key in baseball caps pulled snugly over their long loose curls as they sipped their morning fluids from red plastic cups.

Bradley’s New Fling: Sorry, ladies, Bradley Cooper may be (temporarily) off the market. The former Sexiest Man Alive was spotted in Boston with rumored girlfriend, model Suki Waterhouse, and the duo seemed to be flirting as they strolled around the Common. Cooper, 38, and Waterhouse, 20, were first photographed together on Feb. 12 as they were leaving the Elle Style Awards in London. What about the 18-year age difference between the two? Back in January, Cooper denied he was dating Jennifer Lawrence, saying he was old enough to “be her father.”(FYI, the age gap between Cooper and Lawrence is only 16 years.) April 2013 12|13

I’m open to having more kids: Katie Holmes clearly isn’t allowing her split with Tom Cruise to stop her from doing what she wants to do. The actress has been keeping busy with her clothing line, Holmes & Yang, hair product line Alterna, serving as the face of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, and posing topless for a jewelry ad campaign. Now, she’s rocking the cover of Allure magazine and talking about her future, one that may even involve a brother or sister for 6-year-old Suri. “I don’t know,” she said when asked about expanding her family. “I’m open to it.” Another thing she’s not saying no to? Becoming a lawyer.

“Can’t stand when people all self righteous when it’s convenient it makes them look good. Lmao! But can still talk sh*t when convenient 2,” she wrote. Cole dug further at the conflicting ideals. But all the pontificating in 140 characters came around to Cole, whose last album was titled “Woman to Woman,” thanks to backlash from Beyonce’s loyal fans. Known online as the Beyhive, fans attacked Cole for taking Beyoncé to task. Many referenced Keyshia jabbing Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams in February, specifically her contribution to the Super Bowl halftime show.

Keyshia Cole slams Beyonce’s new song: Not everyone is curtsying over Beyoncé’s new single, “Bow Down / I’ve Been On.” R&B singer Keyshia Cole took to Twitter to vent frustrations about the just-released track, an aggressive meditation on why Bey is queen.

Ian Somerhalder robbed: Who in their right mind would steal from a vampire?! Much less one as amazing as Ian Somerhalder! The Vampire Diaries star left his iPod in his car, and a thief broke into the vehicle just to get it. Ian shared his misfortune on Instagram, letting the burglar know exactly how he felt. He wrote: Times are tough I know- but whoever smashed my window last night & stole my iPod- you’re in Luck; I just put some great new music on it! You’re a d*** FYI. 12|13 2013 April

The simple life Nicolas Cage is known for his high-intensity and actionpacked acting roles. Fans were shocked to hear that he is actually living a low-key life in Las Vegas with his wife and 7-year-old son. He said, “I have a simple life, and I’m a lot lighter because of it. I get up in the morning, I drive my kid to school, I go home, I work out, I take my wife to lunch, I pick my kid up from school, and that’s it.” Cage’s domestic routine is a far cry from the lavish lifestyle he has been known to lead in the past. He reportedly purchased more than a dozen houses, two islands, rare dinosaur skulls, and at least 50 cars, a spending spree that landed the actor in a $14 million financial pinch with the IRS in 2010.

1D film to be called ‘This is Us’: One direction have revealed the name of their hotlyanticipated film in the US. Liam Payne tweeted the name to his followers and said he was looking forward to them getting a chance to watch the documentary when it comes out in August. He posted: “so proud to announce that our upcoming movie is officially titled ‘This is Us’! Can’t wait for you guys to see it!”

Sporting a floral bandeau bikini, Cyrus was photographed chatting on the phone while sunbathing. The “Can’t Be Tamed” singer kept a towel over her forearm where she recently got a new tattoo amidst rumors she and Hemsworth have split. Cyrus inked a miniature rendition of a daVinci anatomical heart. Meanwhile, “The Hunger Games” star has been fulfilling promotional duties in the Philippines for the clothing line Bench, for which Hemsworth is a global ambassador.

R.Kelly’s closet emptied and sold: R. Kelly lost millions of dollars in a foreclosure auction of his Illinois home. The Space Jam singer took out a $3.5 mil mortgage to build his crazy big dream crib back in 1997, but he’s been having trouble keeping up with his payments for over a year now. In 2011, the bank tried to strip him of his house after he went an entire year without making payments. The 20,000 sq. ft home includes 6 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, an indoor pool, a private lake.

Miley Cyrus Relaxes in Palm Springs: Miley Cyrus spent the weekend in Palm Springs, California, and the 20-year-old showed off her toned body while hanging by the pool on Friday.

Taylor reveals that song is about Harry: Another Taylor Swift song mystery solved! The country superstar has revealed that her current megahit, “I Knew You Were Trouble,” is about none other than One Direction’s Harry Styles. In a new interview with the U.K.’s The Sunday Times, the 23-year-old singer opened up about how she harnessed her feelings for her emotional performance of the song at the Brit Awards – for which she donned a wedding dress as her ex sat in the audience. Swift actually wrote “Trouble,” about the first time she and Styles, 18, dated, which was in spring 2012. Coincidentally, the two reconnected not long before she released the song as her third U.S. single from her current album, Red, in November. They then fizzled out once again this past January, just as the song was exploding on radio.

Madonna kisses Anderson Cooper: Madonna and Anderson Cooper embraced in a big smooch as she presented the CNN newsman and talk show host with an honor at the New York edition of the GLAAD Media Awards at the Marriott Marquis. Cooper was the recipient of this year’s Vito Russo Award, which goes to an openly gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality. Cooper spoke publicly about his sexuality for the first time last year with an email to journalist Andrew Sullivan. The Material Girl, who memorably kissed Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera during a performance at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, also left people buzzing about her outfit. She was decked out in a full Boy Scout’s uniform 14|15 2012 April

Nina Dobrev got all the trends right in this Naeem Khan creation. The monochromatic colors, the brocade pint and simple silhouette of the dress all just prove that Nina has been attentive in fashion class. Top marks for you and bonus for the smokey eye and pale lips! Her sparkly clutch and chopard jewels completed her winning look.

There’s just too much going on with

Michelle Jenner in this look. There’s no justice done to this Elie Saab embellished frock whatsoever. The gold Christian Louboutin clutch, the turquoise suede sandals, the hair and make up is all just so wrong. Michelle, I think its time to sack your stylist and make-up artist for not covering up the heavy eye bags.

I love this gorgeous red Reem Acra dress

Selena Gomez

. on Although she looks twice her age in the hairstyle, all is forgiven because of the dress. The black nails, Jimmy Choo clutch and Lorraine Schwartz jewels completes Selena’s look and helps her win points on her style spreadsheet.

Zoe Saldana looks effortlessly chic in this striped Dolce and Gabbana below-the-knee length dress. She even pulls it off better than it was on the runway. The loose armholes, the cinched waist and the classic silhouette is simply perfect for the season. Not forgetting to mention her white Casadei ‘blade’ pumps, Zoe is definitely on fire ATM.

Although this embellished Versace gown is a stunner with the smart beading and tonal changes in colour to

Halle Berry

a slimmer appearance give (not that she needs it), Im sad to say that Halle is getting quite boring. I’m sick of the bob cut and her being AWOL in the limelight so a big yes to the dress but all together all I can say is “Meh”.

18|19 2013 April

Ok getting back to topic, no one and I mean no one should wear that gown to a public event. Do Victoria’s secret angels have the license to look like she walked off from the sets of a sci-fi movie? This Zuhair Murad number is just too over the

Alessandra Ambrosio.

top for the beautiful

April 2013 20|21

Lily Collins definitely had better luck than Alessandra picking out a gown from the same designer! This electric blue Zuhair Murad number makes Lily look simply spectacular not only because of the shocking colour but also because of how elegant her dark locks have been styled. Don’t miss the sparkling emeralds on her ears! This look is definitely my favorite from the lot!

I admire the fact that

Helen

Hunt

opted for a gown by H&M to support the mass retailer’s global green initiative, but what’s with all the wrinkles on the fabric? Gorgeous necklace or not but my eyes are only drawn to the nasty creases on the dress! She opted for simple studs, a layered neckpiece and a cuff by Martin Katz and a stunning clutch by Swarovski. Her decision to wear minimal makeup and loosely curled her hair however, I like.

Anne Hathaway

This look of was the talk of the town because of how well it suited her and I agree, but I can’t help but notice the unfortunate placement of darts. The blush pink dress by Prada certainly wowed many but I somehow, find it very safe. I love her side swept hair and the petal pink lips though and not to forget the beautiful tiffany jewellery. 20|21 2012 April

Jennifer Aniston

I love but I have to say her red carpet looks are always so safe. She never wears her hair up and always decides to stay out of the spotlight, I wonder why. Nonetheless, this red valentine Gown is definitely a change for Jen, who always wears black or beige figure hugging dresses to the Oscars. She chose to leave her hair loose yet again and carried a Salvatore Ferragamo Clutch to accessorize. April 2013 22|23

Matthew

showed off his trim body in a casual outfit by Dolce & Gabbana. The charcoal coloured waistcoat with matching pants and a striped shirt makes him look effortlessly cool. The highlight of Matthew’s getup was the pop of color from his blue suede shoes by Tod’s but I’m not sure I like it as it stands out a little too much from the rest of the get up. He also accessorized with wayfarers to give him a more relaxed look.

A fashionably lucky ‘Accident’

A CLASS-

apart

Tell me a little about your background? -I actually graduated with a law degree from La Sorbonne University in Paris. Believe it or not, I got into the fashion industry by accident, as I wanted to find something that would be a fusion between passion and work. A friend suggested that we open a modeling agency in 2004 in Geneva and it escalated from there. And then…? We invited Fashion TV for the opening of our modeling agency and that’s when the FTV President noticed me, surprised that I had built a fashion agency at such a young age. I was then offered a job which entitled to me take care of all FTV events worldwide. How did you end up handling FTV events in the Middle East? I came to Dubai for an event and really loved it and decided it was a good place to expand the business and build the FTV ‘empire’ step-by-step. What do you consider as the biggest achievement in your life? I consider my career with FTV as my biggest achievement. What do you do in your spare time? I love to read, and I have lot of books about media and other kind of business and music. I like personalized writing styles of French authors from the 16th century as well. What advice do you have for aspiring designers? For young designers here in the region I personally think it is a very difficult to gain international recognition like Elie Saab. The best option would be to work for a big fashion house who can give you the network and exposure you need. This is when the need for a reputed fashion designing school is crucial in the region. I also think the government can help out young designers by incorporating ‘incubators’ where they can help designers to develop their brand.

When asked how to balance work and play, the response was nonchalant – have fun at work! And it looks like Frenchman Romain G Saint-Gilles, the Fashion TV Middle East Vice President has been having a lot of fun in the last three years with the brand attaining an implausible level of success in the region. Who would have thought a young, Sorbonne law school graduate would embrace a career in fashion? With the spunk of a teen paired with corporate ambition, he is the man in the wake of the glitz and glam of FTV events in Bahrain and around the Middle East. The man behind-the-scenes reveals all in a candid, quirky chat with Puja Tiwari.

24|25 2013 April

Talking about a fashion school, does FTV have any plans on opening one in the future? We might if there is a strong demand in the market and if there is adequate support from the government. Anything is possible. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What is your definition of beauty? Beauty is natural and you should dress according to your style, not overdo it. You are just one man handling so many women at once. What is your biggest challenge in this industry? I’m more towards the business rather than the operations part of it and with time you get used to it so it isn’t much trouble. I prefer working with women rather than men; it would be odd if I was surrounded by 20 men. Now that would be awkward! I did my bit of stalking and found that you are into music and DJ’ing as well. Tell me more. I really like music and I mix progressive house tunes. I love musical movies and anything to do with emotion and my fave artist at the moment is Swedish artist JJ Johnson. Favourite fashion brand? I have a complicated relation with fashion. For me fashion is not what you see on the runway, it’s more personal and what you don’t see, like a hidden jewel. I particularly fancy Vivienne Westwood, Issey Miyaki andComme des Garcon because they are very eccentric and bold. What vision do you have for Fashion TV as a brand in the future? First it started as a TV channel and we have the chance now to develop it as its own media, not just a media brand but also as a franchising brand. Compared to Europe, what do you think of the Fashion TV industry in the Middle East? There is more of a chance to grow and expand here in comparison to Europe because of fewer regulations. I also feel that the people here are ready to make the move for business. What do you do to relax and unwind? In Abu Dhabi, there is this beautiful place

April 2013 26|27

called Monte Carlo Beach Club and this is what I do once a week, I go to there and swim while catching up with friends or smoking a cigar. How do you create a balance between your professional and personal life? I think in today’s world it’s very difficult to find a balance between the two. A lot of people say there should be a fine line between work and your private life but I always wanted to find a fusion between the two, a blend of work and passion and I mix a little bit of both. On the other hand, I don’t have much of a private life, but all the technology around it’s very easy to keep in touch with friends and family around the world. I actually get bored when I’m on holiday since I like action. What do you think is the ideal way to balance work and play? My motto is to have fun at work! What do you miss most about Europe? What I miss the most is sipping coffee with friends in little cafes located in historical towns. What do you like about Bahrain? First I really appreciate the mentality here; people are open minded and ready to strike business deals. The people here are very welcoming and I hope to expand the brand and open cafes, lounges and hotels here someday. What is your favourite part of the fashion industry? What I like is how business projects quickly turn into reality. I signed the contract for the FTV studio in Emirates Tower 14 months ago and ours is the first lounge in the world to have an LCD catwalk. When do you think you will retire? Molière the French writer died on the stage and I think it will be the same for me. Like I said, I don’t see it as work, but my passion. How have you adapted events to suit the culture of Middle East? We always keep cultural traditions in mind while hosting events so that no one is offended.

SUCCESS-

As Edgar Degas once said “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” Artist Giuse Maggi is living proof of the adage.

Giuse Maggi has a knack for transforming the most mundane objects into astounding pieces of art. Milan-born Ms Maggi has been fusing glass to craft extraordinary pieces of art. For her upcoming exhibition, she will be working with plastic for a change and the installation is called the ‘Revenge of the Housewife.’ She started 20 years ago when she first moved to Saudi Arabia. Her husband gifted her a kiln and her knowledge in ceramics gave her an idea on how to work with glass. “I began reading books on the matter and teaching myself different fused glass and lamp work techniques,” she explained. She pursued her interest further by joining glass-making classes in Italy and then the Corning Museum of Glass in New York state and Murano, which she says was the stepping stone to her success. After many years in the countries of the Gulf, her works reflect her inspiration and fascination with the forms and colors of the landscape and Arab traditions. The mystery of the old cultures and the intense colors of the desert have captured her imagination, which led her to creating installations such as the ‘Flying Carpet’ and many more. The major difficulty Ms Maggi faced in the Gulf was getting the right

28|29 2013 April

type of glass for her work. “I needed coloured glass to make my artwork so I began colouring the glass myself with glass powder.” (Glass paint is for kids!) In 1999 one of her works was selected in the “New Glass Review 20”. The competition, organized by The Corning Museum of Glass, New York, selects the 100 most important glass art works of the year, since 1977. Her upcoming exhibition will be held at the Bahrain Financial Harbour Gallery on April 25, and is a group recycling project. “We are surrounded by plastic; we buy plastic everyday and throw it away. I was amazed at how much plastic a family of four can use in a day! “I use iron to flatten out the plastic and turn it into art, and hence the title housewife’s revenge,” said Ms Maggi. She uses materials like plastic bags, yogurt cups, bottle caps and bottles, transforming them into dazzling, contemporary designs. For one of her pieces, she is using 1,200 bottle caps, which she collected with the help of St. Christopher’s school. She switched to plastic for the current exhibition as it is a Himalayan task to transport glass because of its fragility. “Plastic is tough and durable, it doesn’t break even if you throw it and I love that!” she said.

Elegance and poise of the Victorian era is what inspired South African designer Thelna Esterhuizen to design a clothing line which will make every woman feel like royalty.

‘Est’ is Ms. Esterhuizen’s latest collection, which was displayed in a fashion show at Elite Seef Residence last month. There were about 12 models from the South African Divas group in Bahrain showcasing over 70 outfits which looked straight out of a classic Hollywood movie!

32|33 2013 April

The multi-talented Ms Esterhuizen is an interior designer by profession but has always longed to get into fashion designing. The attire is a kaleidoscope of lace, tulle and vividly patterned fabric paired with splendid crowns and thespian makeup. “I love mixing and playing around with different textures and I love how feminine the result has come out to be, “Designing clothes was part of my passion and I have been doing it for the past three years. Now that its substantiated It feels like a dream come true and very overwhelming, I can’t believe it, “I couldn’t have done it without all the divas that worked together as a team,” said Ms Esterhuizen.

April 2013 34|35

‘Attention to detail’ is Ms Esterhuizen’s motto, which reflects in the intricate weaves of her apparel, made for women of different shapes and sizes. “My line is for all shapes and sizes, not just teenyweeny models. A lot of women worry about sizes and my line is not about that. Beauty starts from within, how you showcase it inspires you and that is how all these creations have come together,” explained Ms Esterhuizen. It took her about three weeks to design all the dresses for the fashion show. Ms Esterhuizen loves travelling and flies to South Africa twice a year to promote her clothing line. In the future she hopes to conduct bigger fashion shows involving all communities from Bahrain.

A quick trip to

Kuwait April 2013 36|37

by Heena Parkar

Kuwait City

I

t was only later in the evening that I finally had the chance to visit Kuwait City - the busy hub.

I was grateful to have family who drove me through the capital’s skyscrapers which shined green, white and red, decorated for National Day. The soaring Liberation Tower, artistically designed Al Hamra Tower, and the structure identified with the country itself- the Kuwait Towers, were all mesmerizing and enchanting. The city had lots to be discovered and experienced and clearly one visit couldn’t sum up all. So, for my first encounter, the ‘bowling to victory’ game was a good start.

T

ravels are always planned with stuffed bags and adventurous itinerary but my trip to Kuwait was provoked by just one factor - Curiosity. What was next? I quickly confirmed a 3-day trip to Kuwait and called loved ones to prepare them for my sudden yet welcoming arrival. My ‘bits of adventure’ started on the visa counter where I had to receive an on-arrival visa. I could feel myself being proud to be a Bahraini resident as the official issued it in a matter of seconds and handed it over to me with a smiling ‘welcome to Kuwait’ greeting. The next morning, as I was waiting for my tour to begin, my room’s window provided an extended view of Abraq Khaitan. It was definitely an introductory sight to exploring the country. Too restless to hold-on my eagerness, I used my nomadic self to explore the streets and corners. I even managed to collected a few necessities with new currency in hand.

At Club 300, I was introduced to Kuwait’s nightlife which seemed appealing. At my time outs during the game, I noticed many people crowding the place for bowling itself as well as for other options it provided like billiards, video games and shisha. Apart from the fun-filled and leisure activities, food was undoubtedly the other dominant reason for the city’s crowded streets. I was given various restaurant options to choose from and I realised, during the ‘choosing ceremony’ that victuals from almost all parts of the world was available. There were steakhouses, seafood, numerous fast food outlets, and many cafes. I settled for an Indian one as experimenting wasn’t on my mind. Fortunately, it served pretty fine meal which we enjoyed with discussions revolving around anything and everything. Unmistakably, Kuwait’s capital thrives on restaurants, refreshing beach sides, the crazy-fast nightlife, and family friendly gardens and parks. 36|37 2013 April

Grand Avenue

I

had heard a continuous buzz about the Grand Avenues and it was set as our next destination.

Only after I walked into Kuwait’s largest mall, did I know what made it so special. Phase 3, an extension to the existing mall, had an amazing indoor concept which differed from shop to shop. As a first time spectator, I was completely taken by the very design of the outlets and the mall which had a curved transparent roof allowing sun light to penetrate during morning hours. It covered a massive land area and is known to have visitors coming in, to practice daily walks. Collectively with the 1st and 2nd phase, Grand Avenue was a shopper’s paradise with brands like COS, Pink, Sarar, Harvey-Nichols, The Cheese Factory, Millions of Milkshake etc. The shops included something to suit all tastes, along with entertainment present in the form of cinema. Another interesting shop was IKEA furniture which not only displayed home furniture in an appealing way but also allowed people to touch, feel and use them to see how they would fit into their own home. I enjoyed walking into every set which had a living room, kitchen and bedroom arranged beautifully to lure those passing by.

My Return

W

ith so much to see and so many places to visit, 3 days passed by as quickly as possible and it was time for me to fly back.

As the plane took off, I glared out of the window, noticed the Liberation Tower and felt glad to have made that sudden decision out of curiosity. It was then, that I felt an urge to return once again to Bahrain, the land which felt so much like my home.

Few words from the Founder The purpose of the event and the reason I decided to start something like this in Bahrain is to make a difference in the modelling sector in this country. I feel like a lot of models/ promoters are underpaid here and don’t get what they deserve. Agencies here don’t pay enough to the models and they are over worked. It’s always the same models that have been chosen for the same work over and over again and lots of politics in my opinion being played here by choosing the same models. The reason I started this to find fresh new faces, be able to give everyone an equal opportunity to pursue their passion and dreams regardless of race, nationality or where they come from. As a model and a former promoter during my younger years, I felt like something had to be done. Why should we get international models to come here to do work, when Bahrain itself has lots of beautiful talented smart educated girls who can do the job probably even better? I want to be able to give every individual a chance to be exposed in a right way and for everyone to be happy. Models here are never paid on time, and not many are legally binded as well. Having this aside, we already have a few models that are officially signed and legally binded with us and will be there as our official models on our big launch event at 338. I want to create a new professional team where other gulf countries would want to come to Bahrain and pick models from Bahrain on an international basis for their work Dubai isn’t the only country with beautiful girls, Bahrain has them too. And hence our big launch will signify our motives, create exposure and light to all the models and promoters here and hopefully this will be the start of something fresh and new for every girl with a whole new dream out there. My main focus here is for everyone to be happy working with me and to pay them on time, pay them what they deserve and give them the right kind of exposure for them and to treat them with the respect that they deserve. Most girls say yes to the work given not because of the money but only because that is their passion and hence don’t have an option but to accept work for a less pay. Everyone is settling for something less. As women we have the right to work and get paid for what we deserve rather than the people taking whats ours, for their own. The event that will occur at block 338 will bring a lot of exposure to fresh new faces, and every girl / model wishing to be a part of this you can check out our website www.marvel-events.org.uk , and check out our face book page Marvel Events Management Agency on face book and even email us at marveleventsmgt@gmail.com.

H&M

Brand factory: Fashion giant H&M launched their social and environmentally sustainable clothing line last month entitled ‘Conscious,’ designed by Catarina Midby for Spring 2013.

Ms Midby explains that the materials used for the garments, accessories and even the shoes revolve entirely around organic cotton, recycled polyester and a cellulosic material called Tencel.

April 2012 60|61

“The collection is just one of many actions we do for a more sustainable future in fashion. It’s a way to offer our customers a better choice,” she said. Organic cotton is grown without pesticides or fertilizers which is beneficial both for the cotton farmer and for the environment, recycled polyester is better because it saves raw material (oil) and energy, and Tencel is good because it’s made with FSC-certified (not rainforest) pulp produced in a closed loop process, recycling all chemicals within the production plant without letting anything out in nature. French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis is the face for the spring collection as she was believed to have the perfect look and is considered a great fashion icon. H&M has worked with sustainability since the early 1990’s following a stringent Code or Conduct and the Chemical restrictions list, but the idea of having a conscious collection came up in 2006. It wasn’t named ‘Conscious’ at first, it was just a collection made with greener materials and the name Conscious was introduced in 2011. Ms Midby further elucidated that the feedback from customers so far has been positive. “Customers come to us for fashion. Sustainability is always an added value that they appreciate though.” To add to the sustainable goodness, coinciding with the campaign will be the launch of a Conscious garment collecting action at H&M stores in around the world and in Bahrain. Customers will be able to bring any unwanted garments from any label to selected stores, and in return for each bag receive an H&M voucher, to a maximum of two bags per customer per day. This initiative is an effort to prevent clothing from going to landfill. 60|61 2013 April

REVIEW

time

This month’s theme revolves around Mothers Day, World Health Day and Easter. We have chosen a few books and movies which fit with the theme and make a pretty good watch and read. A mother’s story by Gloria Vanderbilt: On a summer day in 1988, Carter Cooper, aged twenty-three, dropped to his death from the fourteenth-floor terrace of the New York City apartment of his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt - as she watched, horrified and helpless. Now, eight years later, she is finally able to set down the terrible events of that afternoon, to come to grips with her anguishing pain, and to suggest how all of us can - and why we must - survive the worst that can happen. Going back into her own traumatic childhood, into the early death of her much-loved husband - Carter’s father, Wyatt Cooper - and into the story of Carter himself, the golden boy, she has written a book of overwhelming intensity, feeling, and beauty. Jewels by Danielle Steel : This is a novel by American romance novelist Danielle Steel. The book is spread over a span of 75 years. On Sarah Whitfield’s seventy-fifth birthday, memories take her back to New York in the 1930s. To a marriage that ends after a year, leaving Sarah shattered. A trip to Europe with her parents does little to raise her spirits, until she meets William, Duke of Whitfield. In time, despite her qualms, William insists on giving up his distant right to the British throne to make Sarah his dutchess and his wife. It tells the story of how she faced obstacles in her life to emerge a determined, strengthened woman. Erin Brockovich - Julia Roberts stars in this legal drama based on the true story of a woman who helped win the largest settlement ever paid in a direct-action lawsuit. Erin Brockovich (Roberts) is a single mother of three who, after losing a personal injury lawsuit, asks her lawyer, Ed Masry (Albert Finney), if he can help her find a job. Ed gives her work as a file clerk in his office, and she runs across some information on a little-known case filed against Pacific Gas and Electric. Erin begins digging into the particulars of the case, convinced that the facts simply don’t add up, and persuades Ed to allow her to do further research. April 2013 62|63

You can heal yourself by Julie K. Silver, MD: When people are seriously ill or injured, they receive immediate and often life-sustaining treatment. Then at some point they are usually left to their own devices to “finish” healing. At the time that patients are discharged from treatment, they have shifted into a zone where they are no longer sick, but still not as healthy as they were before they became ill. This zone, between illness and good health, is where rehabilitation specialists focus. Dr. Silver calls this area of medicine The Healing Zone.

This is the place where doctors are most concerned with physical and emotional healing after an injury or illness. You Can Heal Yourself offers the strategies needed for achieving optimal healing.

Diary of a mad black woman: A woman has to learn how to love and trust men all over again in this comedy drama. Helen McCarter (Kimberly Elise) would seem to have it all - she’s been married for 18 years to Charles (Steve Harris), and over the course of their time together, he’s become one of Atlanta’s most successful attorneys. But despite wealth and prestige, things are not as they should be at the McCarter home, and on their anniversary, Charles drops a bombshell on Helen -- he’s divorcing her for another woman. Escorted out of the house with nowhere to go, Helen moves in with her grandmother Madea (Tyler Perry), a sassy woman with no shortage of opinions and a gun that she’s not afraid to use. As Madea helps Helen get back on her feet emotionally

Chicken Soup for the Mother’s Soul by Jack Canfield , Mark Victor Hansen, Jennifer Read Hawthorne, Marci Shimoff : We can all remember a time when we were young and under-the-weather, and Mom soothed and nurtured us back to health with her magical chicken soup elixir. Now we can revisit those cherished moments with a delightful batch of stories for and about mothers. Celebrity contributions include Barbara Bush, Reba McEntire, Erma Bombeck and Montel Williams.

Never Let Me Go - The story of three friends who are tragically born to lead short lives, and the love triangle that forms between them in their brief time together. Never Let Me Go is set in a dystopian world in which human clones are created so that they can donate their organs as young adults. The movie follows the life story of Kathy, a clone who is raised at a boarding school for future “donors.” It is related in flashback: Kathy is now thirty-one and about to start her first donations. For the past eleven years, she has worked as a “carer,” a nurse and companion to clones who are in between donations. Hop - Hop is a 2011 Easter-themed live-action and animated comedy film from Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment, directed by Tim Hill and produced by Chris Meledandri and Michele Imperato Stabile. He was destined to be the Easter Bunny, but all he wanted to do was rock! When teenage E.B. leaves for Hollywood in pursuit of his dream to become a rock star drummer, he meets Fred, an out-of-work slacker with his own lofty goals. Together the two encounter a series of hilarious mishaps and misadventures and in the end help each other recognize the importance of family. 62|63

BAB MARKET

A contemporary al fresco festival showcasing the creativity of local Bahraini designers and entrepreneurs was held every weekend last month at Bab Al Bahrain. ‘Bab Market’ was a huge hit with people from all walks of life, enlivening the atmosphere of the Manama Souq live music, performance, theatre, food vendors, workshops, an onsite pop-up art gallery and kiddie activities. The initiative was taken by Ministry of Culture to provide a platform for aspiring entrepreneurs to gain exposure in the local scene. The participants of the market were filled with admiration for the market and the traditional link it provided for their creations.

LIM designs by Mariam Toorani

Contemporary illustrations with a different theme all originally made, inspired by different themes ranging from Bahrain to fashion. She stated that she has always been interested in arts and came up with the idea because she had not seen anything similar in the market.

Lave Affair by Huda Hammoud,

What started off as a hobby turned into a fragrant business of handmade soaps, scrubs and body lotion. Ms Hammoud uses natural ingredients for her products and everything she makes is devoid of harsh chemicals. “I started making homemade bath products because all the commercial products out there use a lot of synthetic substances. My products are for all types of skin and hypo-allergenic.”

Home Bakes by Fatima Janahi

“I started Home Bakes last October. While on one of my travels I tried some unusual type of bun. When I came back to Bahrain I looked for similar recipes and once it took off I decided to add eight more flavours including nutella, cream cheese filling, dates and pistachios, red velvet, rose, mint and chocolate.” For the Bab Market she made a special ‘Aloo’ bun, stuffed with potato and coriander, and hopes to open a shop in the near future. Rainbow in a Jar by Sara Al Obaidi

One talented entrepreneur, Sara Al Obaidi, serves rainbows in jars because according to her, life is a rainbow and it tastes like one too! At first glance it is difficult to fathom what is inside the little colourful glass jar, and guesses range from coloured sand to body scrub. She serves cakes in different shaped jars along with condiments such as sprinkles and choco-chips.

Sugar Station by Abeer Janahai and Alia Janahi.

Sugar station is all about desert cups and mini cookies. Abeer loves baking and Alia’s interests lie in making deserts. They had a lot of demand at home from friends and family so they thought of starting a small business on their own.

Haraka by Mona Yateem

Haraka is a brand that is fun, trendy yet affordable accessories such as watches, bags, scarves and t-shirts, and has been in the market for almost a year. In colloquial Arabic the work Haraka is used to describe something that is different, quirky and whimsical with a slightly tongue-in cheek sense of humour. This is exactly what Ms Yateem wanted to create and finds inspiration and humor in the blend of local Bahraini culture with the fast-paced, modern world. Local professional photographer Hassan Al Khunaizi showcased his love of photography at the market, with various original shots of his from Bahrain and Thailand

My Foggy Tomorrow by Nawli Tawfeeqi,

Author Nazli Tawfeeqi has compiled a modern Bahraini fiction which she published last month. It is a very social story. “I finished the book in 2009 but couldn’t find a suitable publisher. In the Middle East you can’t find proper publishers, so I went for self publishing in the end.” Somewhere in the mid right of the market, flashy, stainpainted coca-cola bottles assembled as a lamp stand caught my eye. This is where Nouf Refaei explained how she came up with the idea. “I love recycled stuff, I have a lot of bottles which I collect and still do, love to turn it into something that we can use while adding to its aesthetic value.” She also makes side tables and coffee tables with a similar concept.

A Quick tech review for the latest technological products in market Hady El-Shazly Technology has become an essential component of everyday life for all age groups around the world .Who among us does not use technology throughout the day? In fact no one. Although uses of technology varies according to different ages, but still used by everyone since it became indispensible. In this regard “Sabaya” provides a preview for the latest products in the market of technology:

Pebble Smartwatch

After a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over $10 million, and nearly a year spent working out the kinks of a grassroots effort to bring a consumer product to market, the Pebble Smartwatch is finally here. You can pre-order it now for an April/ May delivery. So is it everything its creators boldly promised it would be? Yes and no. The Pebble is still a work in progress, but a really cool work in progress. It syncs up with “iOS” or Android smartphones, delivering useful notifications right to your wrist. By letting you easily screen notifications, the Pebble can help liberate you from the compulsive need to glue your eyes to your smartphone’s screen. There are still some rough edges in the software, and app compatibility is limited right now, but the Pebble shows plenty of potential. Whether or not developers take advantage remains to be seen.

Sony Bluetooth wireless mobile speakers

You can’t easily get big sound out of a small object, and when a speaker is designed first and foremost to be tiny, you can be confident it won’t rock the house. Sony’s Bluetooth Wireless Mobile Speaker SRS-BTV5 is proof of that. This speaker is a little larger than a pool ball and looks good, but it can’t output loud music or even close to it. It’s a nice novelty speaker, but there are other Bluetooth speakers that are still portable at twice the size and sound much louder.

Dell XPS 10 tablet

The Dell XPS 10 (bundled with keyboard dock) has one of the longest battery life test results we’ve seen. You can use this convertible tablet on the longest flight in the world, and still have battery power left over to check your email when you land. An even better use would be for a busy student or business corridor nomad who rarely has a chance to plug in. 20+ hours of battery life means that you can stay connected all day and well into the night. If “Office and the Internet” are your primary needs on a computer, then the new and first Editors’ Choice winner for Windows RT tablets is the everyday computer you can carry everywhere.

Epson PowerLite 1965 XGA 3LCD Projector

Epson puts the PowerLite 1965 XGA 3LCD Projector on its list of projectors for small rooms. Given its 5,000 lumen rating however enough to throw a 185-inch diagonal XGA image in a room with

SteelSeries Free Mobile Wireless Controller

The SteelSeries Free Mobile Wireless Controller is a Bluetooth-enabled, multi-platform gamepad that is compatible with Android and iOS tablets and phones, PCs, and Macs. It aims to make touch-screen gaming less frustrating and easier to control. Given its small, lightweight design and the ability to connect to a variety of devices, this wireless controller is a nice addition to the arsenal of any mobile gamer. moderate ambient light, it’s much more appropriate for a mid- to large-size conference room or classroom. Factor in the near-excellent data image quality and above par video quality for a data projector, and it can be an excellent fit.

SwiftKey Keyboard for Android

Despite the ubiquity of touch screen keyboards, no one has figured out how to make tapping words on glass a pleasurable experience. But the Android app SwiftKey comes close. While iOS users are stuck with the stock keyboard, SwiftKey takes full advantage of Android’s openness and swaps out your mobile device’s existing keyboard for one that’s better designed for thumb-typing and makes smart predictions about what you’ll write next. While it won’t replace a traditional keyboard for accuracy and speed on long documents, SwiftKey’s Flow input—a new feature, similar to Swype—makes firing off quick messages a breeze, and its smart suggestions get better the more you use the app.

Samsung DV150F Camera

The DV150F is the latest iteration in Samsung’s Dual View camera design. In addition to the rear LCD, which is a ubiquitous feature on point-andshoots, a front LCD lets you point the lens at yourself to snap a quick self portrait. The 25mm wide-angle field of view makes it possible for a friend to join you, and integrated Wi-Fi lets you beam the photo directly to Facebook or your smartphone. The camera is rife with features, but its image quality leaves some room for improvement.

Belkin WeMo Switch + Motion

The futuristic promise of the connected home is slowly beginning to materialize, with learning thermostats like the Nest at Apple Store, as well as various solutions for monitoring and controlling your devices at home from afar. The Belkin WeMo Switch + Motion helps bring that dream even closer, allowing remote access and automation for many household appliances. The WeMo system adds Wi-Fi connectivity to devices like lamps, fans, or anything else that plugs into a wall outlet. Then you can control them from your iOS device when you’re not at home. That control is limited to simple on and off commands, but the Switch + Motion also lets you set up rules and schedules for your connected devices. It’s a neat way to help save on energy costs and simply makes life a little easier.

Overweight? Don’t diet

On the occasion of World Health day falling on April 7, certified dietician and sports nutritionist Nada Jawahery speaks about a key problem that is faced by a majority of Bahraini adults and children-obesity and being overweight. According to Nada, dieting should not be done as a quick-fix weight loss solution as it does more harm than good. Instead, simple changes in daily routine and quick exercises are more efficient in obtaining a healthier body. She goes into the nitty-gritty of the subject to enlighten Sabaya readers about what they can do to get back in shape.

lifestyle changes is also an important part of successful weight management. A dietitian can help you with this.

7. Why are the harmful effects of being overweight? Being overweight can lead to back and knee pain, heart disease, hypertension, infertility, diabetes, gout, and certain forms of cancer.

1. Is being overweight in Bahraini adults and children common? Yes, most Bahraini adults are either overweight or obese. In children, obesity is growing as well since junk food and sweets are so readily available in school vending machines and cafeterias. Also, children are watching more TV and spending less time playing outside.

2. How do I know if I am overweight? Overweight can be determined by several factors, including body mass index (BMI), percentage body fat, and measure of waist circumference. Individuals with a BMI over 25 kg/m2 are considered overweight. Men with a waist circumference above 40 inches, and for women above 35 inches are also overweight. As for healthy percent body fat, this differs depending on gender and age. At my clinic, we conduct a body fat test to assess how much body fat needs to be reduced based on the parameters I had mentioned. Individuals with a BMI over 30 kg/m2 are obese. Obesity is categorized into 3 grades: obese, severely obese and morbidly obese.

3. Why are Bahrainis becoming so overweight? Most Bahrainis live a very sedentary lifestyle, involving very little walking, with the availability of cars for transportation, and house maids that help with household chores and lack of sports. Also, there are some Bahrainis that believe that if you are not overweight that means you are malnourished and not healthy. Many Bahraini families also use a lot of oil in preparing foods such as biryani and machboos, in addition to

eating large portions. The lack of physical exercise is also contributing to the obesity epidemic in Bahrain. Most people also socialize around food. If it’s not lunch, then it’s coffee, and if it’s not coffee then it’s dinner. People can start to rearrange their social lives by making socializing an activity such as bowling or meeting for a walk or even adopting a sport such as golf or tennis with friends. The weather in Bahrain is also suitable most of the year for swimming so people can take advantage of that.

8. Do you think the Health Ministry is doing enough to spread awareness about obesity and being overweight? The Health Ministry runs projects to build awareness about obesity and being overweight. However there is a great deal more they can do to build awareness. Parents can make themselves role models to their kids by becoming more active and eating right.

9. With the fast pace of life and with 4. What is a crash diet? Should they the onset of summer, a lot of people be followed? don’t usually stick to their exercise A crash diet involves extreme nutritional routines due to lack of time. What deprivation and is aimed at achieving very advice do you have for them? rapid weight loss. Crash diets are also known as “fad diets.” They often result in improper nutrition that can result in adverse health effects if followed over a long period of time, even hospitalisation. I recommend people avoid crash diets as they are not healthy.

I recommend really focusing on eating right, and being more physically active during the process of their day such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator or parking the car farthest away from work building to walk more.

It is a matter of fitting the time Crash diets often result in quick weight regain or in a person “blowing their diet” too soon before they have achieved the desired weight loss. Because they are starvation diets, they are very difficult to continue following. Side effects include lethargy, broken teeth, dehydration, nutritional deficiencies, nausea, and a higher susceptibility to osteoporosis.

MCLAREN MP4 12C SACRIFICE NOTHING

‘Life is measured in achievement, not in years alone.’ When a 27-year-old Bruce McLaren penned those words in 1964, his new company, Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd, was less than a year old. In those days, Bruce’s vision was shared by fewer than half a dozen loyal souls, who slogged across the world to race his self-made cars. Nowadays, the McLaren Group employs more than 2000 people, all of whom still share Bruce’s ideals of combining sportsmanship with solid engineering practice and cutting-edge technical expertise.

The McLaren Technology Centre is the headquarters of the McLaren Group, located on a 500,000 m² site in Woking, Surrey, England designed by the architect Norman Foster exemplifies the quieter fortune being made by the UK motorsport industry, worth around GB£6bn to the UK economy. Work on the project, originally known as the Paragon Technology Centre, started in 1999 in what was claimed to be the biggest privately funded construction project in Europe with an approximate of GB£300m. McLaren employees started using the facility in May 2003. A second facility, the McLaren Production Centre has been built opposite the building in 2011. The type of factory McLaren built with the focus on details has been taken to an extent that is very unique. The roughly semi-circular building blends perfectly into its environment with its sweeping roof line beside a formal lake which is an integral part of the cooling system. The lakeside facade is an unbroken curved glass wall; maximising natural light minimising

reliance on traditional energy consumption. The first steps inside the MPC bring you through a white hallway onto a balcony overlooking the assembly hall, which combines two statements; clinical precision and remarkable cleanliness. Long white corridors and glass lifts take visitors to an indoor boulevard, lined with historic McLaren vehicles on one side. The cars are assembled in a white-tiled hall where the only sound is the squeak of new car tyres as the completed models are driven into testing booths. There is no conveyor belt or the usual industrial white noise. It is linked to the MTC using a subterranean pedestrian tunnel pulled from a science fiction movie. The McLaren centre allows the whole team - design, development, engineering, purchasing, testing, production, marketing, sales and aftersales - to be fully integrated. McLaren Automotive achieves nine to ten cars per day, according to Alan Foster, Operations officer. The McLaren premise in Woking share the true meaning of

future car development and production. The combination between racing heritage and development in the MTC, and the production of road-legal sports cars in the MPC make it a place you have to put on your wish list. For a guy who is not that loud; I blew it off this time. And it was totally, 100 percent, without a doubt, worth it. For starters; I mean any chap with a heavy right foot and a love of speed would have done the same. But also a guy who gets a call from his editor, temporarily blanks on the fact that he has a chance to test drive a McLaren MP4-12C on a busy weekday immediately accepts the gig. Hey, I’m only human. Here’s the takeaway: Against strong odds, I still managed to stay alive and out of trouble. So what did a few days with the 12C teach me? A supersport car buy you almost anything in abundance especially those seeking attention or someone who commands respect or even own the roads ! OUR 7 POINT REVIEW EXTERIORS The McLaren has more curves than a supermodel and skin as scintillating as one. Massive air intakes define the MP4’s sides, while even the vertical-opening doors are a work of design magic. Up front, long and trapezoidal bi-xenon headlights and the rear boasts high-mounted exhausts that howl from above the bumper. The McLaren’s mid-mounted V8 heart, meanwhile, is displayed

under a panel of glass for all to see. INTERIORS Leading with your right leg it’s an easy glide into the nicely bolstered seat. There’s a huge 9000-rpm tach and a steering wheel unburdened by switchgear, with a center-pivoting shift paddle. There is even cargo space on a bench behind the seats in addition to the cavity up front near the bumper. The dual climate control is on the door side. The center console is narrow and is dominated by a 7-inch touch-screen, which houses stereo and navigation features. However, for real entertainment, you need to press the big red button that’s marked “Engine Start.” PERFORMANCE The heart of every McLaren MP4-12C is a twin-turbo V8 engine that has now been tuned to make 616 horsepower, the first ever engine McLaren has designed and built. All that power is transferred to the rear wheels via a dual-clutch 7-speed transmission that can shift automatically or manually via F1-style paddle shifters. All this ferocity makes this vehicle hit a top speed of 207 mph and blast to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds. RIDE AND HANDLING Driving the 12C, first of all, is an aural cornucopia. Once the engine start button was pushed, the sound of the high-performance powertrain enveloped and also echoed off all the nearby structure and vehicles. At idle I could hear the fuel injectors ticking away and

82|83 2013 April

faint sounds of machinery at work right behind my head—but the symphony hits when you mat the throttle. Exhaust, pop-off valves, spinning cam chains, you hear all of it, everything you want. Since there was no heavy clutch to worry about, maneuvering this car at slow speeds was easy. The steering is also very light at slow speeds, which makes it getting in and out of parking lots very easy and the bumps don’t jangle its nerves. I expected the MP4 to be quick and track-hungry, but the baby-carriage comfortable ride noted with the “normal” chassis mode rang our “holy cow!” bell. Fortunately, politeness is just one aspect of the MP4’s psyche. The “normal” drive mode is merely the appetizer to McLaren’s feast. So, after paying my respects at normal, I moved on through the sport and track settings to liberate the MP4’s mischievous

April 2013 84|85

twin for handling (H) and performance (P); both controlled via separate twist knobs. As you can imagine, these switches change the character and the volume of noise of the vehicle, depending on your mood and road conditions. Under “Manual” mode I Shifted down a few cogs and stepped on it; my eyes popped open to full attention and ears assaulted by the V8 concert, with the scenery passing by me in a blur. This is a ferociously quick car. Downshifts are just as smooth by the Seamless Shift Gearbox and substantial engine braking. As for cornering the ProActive Chassis Control uses hydraulically interconnected adaptive dampers, which measure your speed, steering angle and body angle to keep the car as flat and stable through the corners as possible.

EQUIPMENT The MP4-12C comes with 19inch wheels in front and 20-inch wheels at rear, cruise control and Meridian sound system. A unique Intake Sound Generator system lets drivers vary the amount of engine noise entering the cabin. The multifunction stalk now can activate the optional vehicle lift system if at all it has to negotiate steeper driveways and taller speed bumps. SSG has a “pre-cog” feature; which alerts the transmission’s electronic controller on the gear change by applying light pressure to one side of the paddle shift.

The true test of a track car is a driver’s comfort level— if you don’t feel in control, you simply can’t go quickly. In full-on track mode, the steering gave me impeccable feedback like a dedicated track car. It inspires driver confidence past the point of traction loss. When I charged a bend with excess speed, it automatically dabbed its inside rear brake to mitigate the understeer I provoked. And while adding throttle prematurely while exiting a turn the tail steeped wide but never in a threatening manner because the stability-control system engaged unobtrusively to save my day. There’s also a launch control, which is both brainless and highly enjoyable: push a few buttons, hold the brake, mash the throttle. Once the instrument-cluster display changed from “building boost” to “release brake,” I did just that with tires perfectly hazing themselves and a stupid grin on my face. SAFETY The MP4-12C has a rear wing that lifts to 32 degrees for enhanced downforce or 69 degrees to act as an air brake. The way the car stabilises also under the carbon ceramic braking is nothing short of miraculous. MPG & CO2 EMISSIONS 24.2mpg is, apparently, achievable on the combined cycle and 279g/km of CO2. Compartively to other super-sport cars this is highly efficient.

VERDICT My road time in the 12C was nothing short of nirvana. The MP4 has the moves of a master and the brains of a child prodigy. It verges close enough to perfect; that other super-sport cars will feel the heat of a serious competitor who has to struggle to match this combination of value, performance backed by racing pedigree, and technological intrigue. If there’s a ray of sunshine beaming down on a usually gloomy Great Britain, it may be Bruce McLaren smiling over what his successors have achieved. A surprising fact that made me take even more pride in the car is that the Mumtalakat Holding Company (wholly owned by Kingdom of Bahrain) holds a major share in the Mclaren Group after Ron Dennis and the TAG Group. Men’s etiquette

Affects human relationships and modifies life style Hady El-Shazly Although etiquette is unique and detached from principles, they are yet necessarily connected. Etiquette is the collection of manners that a society formulates specifically for the purpose of getting along well together. This etiquette is then guided by three basic principles which include consideration, respect and honesty. Surveys indicate that when a man shows and treats others with respect his image stands out and he is regarded as not only a well mannered person but as one to be highly valued by others. While it may be a new century and thus an entirely new set of cultural norms and progressive belief systems, there will always be a place for a well-mannered and polite gentleman at a board room table as well as at a the dinner table. By possessing proper manners and integrating them into the already extroverted and energetic personality, a man will be ultimately more attractive to others both as a friend, a partner and as a lover.

Charm and Chivalry for women

Despite all efforts and belief to the contrary, chivalry is not dead. A woman still appreciates a person who takes the time to hold a door open for them, although laying ones coat down over a puddle in the street may be a bit much. Nobility may no longer entail long and poetic courtship, or it yet may, but it is still a valuable and respectable trait that all men should aspire to hold. Above all, a man should remember to be presentable and well groomed to his best when taking a woman on a date or a romantic night in town. Too often at dimly lit restaurants the scene is set by a woman in a booth wearing a beautiful little dress with a perfect little earrings and other jewelry, While sitting directly opposite is her date or boyfriend wearing work jeans, sneakers, a sweater and a ball-cap!! This is a sign to those women that these men in particular are none respectful, romantic, nor do they understand the effort that the great majority of women put into their appearance and image. Oftentimes, these men do not keep their ladies in a relationship for very long. April 2013 92|93

Men’s to get respect

Our advice to men is they should always be sure to dress appropriately for your date, try to always go one step further than what the casual patron of the establishment they plan to attend might wear in order to appear distinctive and sharp without looking overdressed. By showing his date, his girlfriend, or even his wife that he is putting an effort to look in the best shape for her, and for himself, imparts the notion of confidence and respect that will start men’s night off on the right foot. In another hand, we advise him to simply be himself and be inquisitive, ask about his date and follow up on their responses. Women detest braggarts and egotists and will quickly feel bored when it becomes evident that a man is not interested in them, or if he is interested, it is not in their personality.

A men’s word reflects who is he and the actions will prove whether he is trustworthy. Individuals start business agreements with the mere exchange of words, ideas and concepts, trust and security is the foundation to forming relationships. If the person proves to be unreliable by their actions, then they have proved their meaningless value. In the technologically advanced era of e mails, facebook, twitter, text messages and other social media that could be used to communicate with others, the spoken and written word needs to be a gentlemen’s bond. In general, if we fail to meet our obligations then words will be meaningless sounds and relationships will be broken, and that goes for men and women. Men of tradition and distinction have upheld their word by binding themselves to what they say. They never over commit and fulfill their obligations because only then if a man demonstrates then he is a gentlemen whose word is his bond.

Quite simply, there is no quick fix or magic solution to impart better etiquette and manners upon any particular gent. It is a gradual process that demands constant attention is paid to what one says, and how one presents themselves to others. Etiquette and mannerisms are simply learned behaviours when it comes to the realm of social interaction, men will make the greatest successes by thinking positively and proactively rather than negatively and reactively. By adopting a polite, respectful attitude and speaking tactfully and thoughtfully, men will achieve a greater degree of respect from their peers, both professional and romantic.

The value of gentlemen words

The great author Charles Dickens wrote a phrase that echoes and casts a shadow upon all who read it “The word of Gentlemen is as good as his bond”. The statement declares that words spoken by gentlemen have value and are binding, but tragically today words become an audible sound that never make it into practice or action. A gentlemen’s word is binding because there is value in what is said but only when actions follow. The idea of a bond is something that you are obligated to fulfill. For instance, if a man tells a friend that he will be at their house at 5 and doesn’t show up; he demonstrates words and loses significance.

Quick tips in general

When sitting at a table (either in a restaurant or at home), a man’s elbows should never rest on the eating surface. Elbows on the table are acceptable only between meal courses, or in extremely informal settings like bars or pubs. A man should never enter a building with a hat or cap on. The only exceptions are public places of interests such as train, bus, and subway stations; indoor and outdoor pavilions; or places near public street entrances like lobbies or hallways. A gentleman should always remove his hat for photographs, when entering a home, for the national anthem, and when in the presence of a woman. If at all possible, men should refrain from touching, moving, or interfering with one’s personal property. For example, a man should never touch and move an unknown woman’s purse, even if it’s in his way. He should also steer clear of touching clothes, vehicles, equipment, or any personal items belonging to another. The only exceptions are to return lost or misplaced items to their rightful owners, or if an emergency calls for his intervention. More strict rules apply to home properties such as mailboxes. Not only is opening someone’s mailbox bad etiquette, it’s also illegal. A man should cover his mouth when coughing or sneezing. If he has a handkerchief or some tissue nearby, should sneeze or cough directly into it and when completed must throw it away. Serious respiratory illnesses like influenza, whooping cough, and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) are spread through airborne germs, and germs on hands. If no tissues are available, should sneeze or cough into sleeve. This helps keep germs out of the air and off of hands.
