RPatt cuddles with stunning models in steamy ad

Robert Pattinson has reportedly filmed a raunchy commercial advertisement in which he could be seen kissing and cuddling with some stunning models. According to the Sunday People, the steamy Dior advert is believed to be his revenge on Kristen after pictures of her getting on with director Sanders became public last year. But now, when they are together again, the 26-year-old star has warned his girlfriend about the sizzling video, which is expected to go viral. A friend of the star revealed that Pattinson had to explain that he was in an extremely difficult position when the commercial was shot and that he did not mean to go as far as he did, the Mirror reported.

Jude Law writes to WTO against seal trade

Actor Jude Law has written to the World Trade Organization to urge it to uphold a European Union ban on seal fur. The British actor was writing on behalf of animal protection group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which released the letter on Saturday. The EU banned commercial trade in all seal products in its member states in 2010 amid concerns about the animal welfare aspects of hunting seals. The ban is being challenged by the Canadian government, and the WTO is holding a hearing later this month to settle the dispute. PETA has also enlisted actress Pamela Anderson in its publicity campaign against the seal trade.

Kim Kardashian, Humphries settle divorce, avoid trial

Russel Crowe a big fan of mime

Actor Russell Crowe started appreciating mime after he saw the performance of Marcel Marceau, an internationally acclaimed French actor and mime artist but clarifies that he has “never intentionally performed a mime.” “Something that causes much mirth among acquaintances is that the first time I ever went to the theatre was to see mime artist Marcel Marceau,” contactmusic.com quoted Crowe as saying. “It’s the truth, and I loved it. He was at the top of his game. But just for clarity, I have never intentionally performed a mime,” he added. Russell, 49, also admitted his love for films as a child, and recalled sneaking into an afternoon show of “Papillon.”

Reality television star Kim Kardashian and NBA basketball player Kris Humphries have finally settled their divorce, avoiding a trial that was set for next month, a Los Angeles County Superior Court spokeswoman said on Friday. Judge Hank Goldberg approved the divorce settlement for the couple, who broke up after just 72 days following their made-for-TV wedding in August 2011. Celebrities usually settle their divorces through negotiation rather than at a trial that can fuel publicity. Humphries, 28, had been demanding an annulment, alleging that Kardashian, who cited irreconcilable difference when filing for divorce, had no intention of keeping to the marriage, which was filmed as part of her reality show.

Sarah Harding gets six month driving ban

THE singer was arrested at the beginning of the month and Sarah Harding was served a six month driving ban. The Girls Aloud beauty was caught using her mobile phone behind the wheel in Central London. Appearing in court today, she dressed in a supersmart combination of trouser suit and towering heels. Adding sunglasses and a crisp white shirt, the 31-year old was papped outside Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court. She was also handed a £500 driving fine, £20 victim surcharge and £85 prosecution costs.

Air dating Duchess of Cambridge’s brother

Actress and TV presenter Donna Air has reportedly found love with PRINCE WILLIAM’s brother-in-law, James Middleton. The Mummy Returns star has been enjoying a string of dates with Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge’s younger brother, regularly dubbed as one of Britain’s most eligible bachelors, who she met at a private members’ club in London in February (13). A source tells the Mail on Sunday, “It’s still early days but James thinks she’s great. They’ve been out together to a few places - but they always choose discreet restaurants where they are less likely to get spotted. They have been dating for about three months. They enjoy each other’s company and are getting to know each other.”

Reese Witherspoon was arrested on Friday for disorderly conduct according to US reports. The Legally Blonde star apparently quarrelled with police officers after her car was pulled over. The 37-year-old and her husband James Toth were spotted in their car which was swerving across lanes according to a police report obtained by Variety magazine. It also suggested Reese’s other half emerged from the car looking dishevelled and smelling of alcohol. The star is said to have started misbehaving while her husband took a breathalyser test. After ignoring requests to stay seated, she apparently said: “Do you know my name. You’re about to find out who I am. You’re about to be on national news.”

Eva Longoria’s dating reality show scrapped

Actress Eva Longoria’s reality TV show READY FOR LOVE has been axed after just two episodes. The Desperate Housewives star served as producer for the dating series, which focused on three bachelors and three matchmakers who handpick a field of 36 bachelorettes to find partners for the eligible men. The programme debuted on U.S. network NBC earlier this month (Apr13), but it›s since been cancelled due to poor viewing figures. It is not yet known if NBC will decide to air the remaining episodes of Ready For Love at a later date.

Zac suffers ‘first time’ jitters

Zac Efron has revealed that he had the jitters while shooting a scene with Heather Graham in their upcoming movie, ‘At Any Price.’ The 25-year-old actor said at a Cinema Society and Ballysponsored screening that he has been a fan of Graham and had a crush on her ever since he could remember, the New York Post reported.

Lindsay Lohan has been kicked off a social networking site, according to reports. The Mean Girls beauty - who appeared for her first day in court yesterday - is rumoured to have had her account terminated on A Small World. A source revealed that both Lindsay and Tiger Woods have had their accounts terminated. “We will absolutely not tolerate anyone who makes our members feel uncomfortable,” the CEO and President said in a public statement about the general termination of several accounts. Lindsay was last night granted 90 days in rehab after striking a deal with the US court. She is set to spend 18 months in therapy and has also been sentenced to 30 days of community service. 10|11 2013 May

Sofia Vergara reveals struggle with thyroid cancer

Sofia Vergara, who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the age of 28, has opened up about her battle with the disease. The 40-year-old actress told Fox News that going through the whole process of getting her thyroid out, then the radiation and all the stuff, has of course changed her life because her priorities changed. She said that you realize that no matter how much beauty, money, and success you have, if you don’t have health, you have nothing, because you can’t do anything. Having her thyroid removed left Vergara with hypothyroidism, which is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce certain crucial hormones. The actress relies on daily medication, which delivers a synthetic form of these hormones.

Janice Dickinson ‘broke’ World’s first supermodel Janice Dickinson is reportedly broke and has declared bankruptcy. She told Radar Online that she is upset over the development and is desperate to pay everyone back. According to the court documents obtained by the New York Post, the 58-year-old is 1 million dollars in debt - much of which seems to be attributed to doctor’s bills for her plastic surgery procedures. On her list of debtors is Beverly Hills dermatologist Arnold Klein and anti-aging expert Dr. Uzzi Reiss, who are both owed more than 8,000 dollars, she also has unpaid taxes dating back more than a decade, with her owing more than half a million dollars to the IRS and the states of California and New York.

Jury chosen in Michael Jackson wrongful death trial A jury was chosen on Monday in the $40 billion civil lawsuit over the death of Michael Jackson that pits the pop star’s mother against concert promoters AEG Live. After a month-long search for a jury, six men and six women were seated to hear what could be an emotional three-month trial that will revisit the checkered life and 2009 death of the “King of Pop” on the eve of a planned comeback. Three alternate jurors still have to be chosen, clearing the way for opening statements to begin possibly later this week or early next week.

LiLo snorted coke, says blogger Lindsay Lohan snorted cocaine off her wrist in a bathroom during a paid appearance at a nightclub in Miami on New Year’s Eve 2009, according to a new tell-all memoir by controversial gossip blogger Nik Richie. In the book titled ‘Sex, Lies and The Dirty’, Richie revealed how Lohan shamelessly snorted coke in front of him at Mansion Nightclub while her former girlfriend Samantha Ronson deejayed, Radar Online reported. The controversial blogger also claimed that he tried to flirt with Lohan’s then-girlfriend Samantha Ronson in order to make the actress jealous.

Terrified of losing mother: Gerard Butler Scottish actor Gerard Butler says he was so dependent on his mother that he used to have nightmares about losing her. The 43-year-old was brought up by his mother after his father walked out on them when he was a child. He said: “It made me very dependent on my mother, in a good way, as I do have an amazing mother.” “I always had this terror of losing her. I used to have nightmares about it all the time. I was often on a beach, kneeling on some board and the board wouldn’t move, and my mother would be calling me, and I couldn’t get to her,” he added. 12|13 2013 May

I don’t think Taylor Swift has ever made a fashion “miss” this season. With so many spectacular looks, Its beginning to get hard to put a finger on which was her best look till date. Here she is looking fabulous yet again, in this heavily embellished D&G number. Don’t miss the tiny Norman Silverman earrings that sit perfectly with the dress. With her sleek pony and smoky eyes, Taylor looks much more a seductress than her usual sweet girl-next-door self.

I’m really not loving this Thakoon dress on my usual favorite Anna Kendrick. The neckline is so unflattering with the burnt orange spacing. A deeper V neck or an off shoulder would have been so much better. Also, what’s up with the tacky gold collar? The only thing that my eyes are drawn to is the Jerome Rousseau gold cap toed pumps. The rest is just meh.

I’m confused as to where to begin with this look. The ill fitting blazer? The tacky nail colour? The cheap “oops my designer lingerie is peeking out” move? Fergie, we love you but this Dsquared tux does absolutely nothing for you.

march 2013 16|17

Emilia Clarke looks stunning in this maroon chiffon Zac Posen gown. I love the plunging neckline and the fall of the garment on her. If I had to, I would have done without the satin belt and would have opted for a bronze tile belt instead. The other thing that I love about the look is these uber gorgeous Lorraine Schwartz earrings and the soft side swept hairdo!

Ange looks like she belongs in a movie with the 12 deciples. I’m really hating this robe like thingamajig by Saint Laurent. What’s with all the tassles and the ‘cape over loose robes’ concept? This couldn’t be more unflattering if you ask me.

I’m so loving this playful Vika Gazinskaya number on Chen ! Its bang on trend, being monochromatic and all and I love the quirky structure of the skirt. What’s even better are the Charolette Olympia ankle strap heels. Its so hard to work such a skirt but Chen surely has the legs for it. Don’t miss out on the Armani earrings either.

May 2013 18|19

I almost didn’t recognize the usually shy Ashley Tisdale. She looks rather fetching in this matte sequined Lucia Hohan gown that accentuates her petite frame. I love the smart paneling on the dress and the silhouette. Ashley was wise enough to go for smoky eyes, sleek tresses and nude lips. She completed her look with a basic black Tory Burch clutch and Dana Rebecca earrings.

When it comes to suiting, Tom knows Armani is boss, hence the three piece custom made suit. I love the two tone purple-olive tie that’s sits perfectly with the grey hues in his outfit.

Although I’m not 100% in love with this look, I’m going to be very biased and say it still works because... well, Robert Downey Jr ! On a more serious note, he does bring a rather funky take on this Vivienne Westwood tux by adding in the sneakers. I wish he would have sported stubble though. Apart from that, its quite fetching.

Samar AlMeer

A CLASS-

If there was one word to describe talented youngster Samar AlMeer, it would be a hybrid of ‘vivacious’ and ‘determined.’ Having achieved much at a young age, she personifies Bahrain’s youth and is an emerging entrepreneur in the field having founded the region’s biggest anime and gaming convention, Animania. The quintessential icon of a modern woman, she reveals her ambitions, aspirations and much more in a heart-to-heart with Puja Tiwari. May 2013 20|21

1. Let’s start by telling me a bit about yourself. I’m a marketing student at the University of Bahrain (UOB) and my horoscope is Taurus. I like to enjoy life but stay focused at the same time. I have great family and friends that always support me and help me to accomplish my dreams, wishes and encourage me to enjoy my life at the same time. 2. What are your hobbies? I like to do nail art. I’ve probably done every zany design in the book like Redbull and Powerhorse nails. I also love Kangoo Jumps. 3. What are your ambitions in life? My ambitions have no limit. I would like to be a successful entrepreneur and an independent woman who likes to make her family and friends proud. 4. What do you consider as your greatest achievement? Meeting Kim Kardashian and hosting her show was the best moment of my hosting career and when it comes to events, Animania is hands down my proudest achievement. I started Animania from nothing and it has now grown into a fully fledged annual event which is highly anticipated by Anime enthusiasts not only in Bahrain but all over the gulf.

6. What message do you have for the youth in Bahrain? Just do whatever you feel like doing. If anyone who tells you that you cannot do something and you’re not capable, just get rid of that person because they are not good for you. Just think of it in this way, where there is a will there is a way. 7. What do you do to de-stress after a long day? I like to pamper myself a lot and at the end of a long day or week I like doing my nails or unwinding at a spa. It really relaxes me and clears my mind. I also like hanging out with my family and friends, which is something I always do to relax. 8. Let out your silliest and safest secret. I have the memory of a goldfish. I can forget names, faces and anything else in minutes. So what was the question again? 9. Tell me about your journey with Animania. When I was a teenager I was really into anime and all things related to it. I wanted to attend an anime convention but there wasn’t anything like it in this region, in the Gulf in general. I didn’t want to travel all the way to Europe or USA to participate in a convention so I gathered a few friends and we decided to have an event which has anime and gaming depending on the market of Bahrain. The feedback we got was very encouraging and positive and it has now become a yearly event.

Make up by: Ruqaya from Head to `Toe Salon Hair:Reena from Head to Toe Salon Photography: Mohammed Yousif from Vivid Photography

5. What do you do besides being a student? Other than being a student, I do everything else for fun and to gain experience. I do show hosting and I’ve had my own show on Bahrain TV called ‘Summer Kids Club.’ I also do a bit of modelling along with event management.

20|21 2012 May

10. How has the footfall at Animania increased since it first started? It definitely grew and we now have people attending from all around the Gulf and this year it was over 1000 people. 11. How do you balance organising shows, managing events and modelling along with your studies? I tend to juggle things a lot but the thing is I choose my clients accordingly; I’m very picky with regards to that. That’s how I don’t have pressure when it comes to managing my time. 12. What do you hope to achieve in the near future? I plan to launch my own events management agency in the near future through which models, actors and the media will gain something new. Hopefully I will try to organise concerts in Bahrain more often. 13. How do you spend your free time? My spare time is mostly with my friends and family. We just hang out and do a lot of fun stuff together. 14. What do you admire the most about Bahrain? I admire its cosmopolitan lively atmosphere. I believe it is the land which meets the lifestyle of people from different backgrounds, traditions and beliefs. Living in Bahrain is a great opportunity to interact with different cultures and that is why it is beloved by all. It is like a little gem with a far-reaching sparkle.

Having been in the business for more than 16 years, Lebanese hairdresser Michel and his team of awesome foursome Rayan, Ronny, Pierre and Sameera are constantly working on bettering their skills. They regularly travel around the globe to find out more about the latest ground-breaking products in the world of hairstyling. Mr Nassif says that during summer most women opt for a cut that is short along with various hues of blonde and other bright colours. There are four basic haircuts, namely, long, round, straight and square from which several different hairstyles can be created. However, there is no hard-and-fast rule that women must colour their hair in blonde and cut their hair. “The cut should depend on what suits their face and the same applies to hair colour,” explained Mr Nassif. The latest innovation in hair colour is the ammonia-free concoction which does not damage your locks no matter how many times the hair is coloured. Mr Nassif explained this is because there is treatment to soften and nourish the hair along with the colour. He also advises women to choose hairstyles according to the occasion. “How fancy the hair style will be depends on whether they are attending a wedding, anniversary or party,

“Most women pick retro hairstyles for parties because of how glamorous it looks. It defines the face and make the tresses look voluminous and vibrant,” he stated. The most popular treatment in his salon is the Brazillian Blowout, which is a hair-smoothening treatement. “Many people confuse the Brazillian Blowout with keratin straightening. Keratin only makes the hair straight and can often lead to drying out at later stages, “Brazillian Blowout smoothes the shaft of the hair, making it healthy and silky,” said Mr Nassif. Many Hollywood stars such as Halle Berry, Tom Cruise and Nicole Richie use the treatment Michel Beauty Salon also has a veiled ‘Muhajiba’ section for ladies who prefer to get their beauty needs in a more private setting.

Glamour Retro Hairstyle

“To get the most out of your salon visits, communication between the client and the hairdresser is the most important factor,” said Mr Nassif. Their expertise paired with down-to-earth attitude is what makes Michel Hair and Beauty Salon so live up to its reputation.

Brand-Factory

Spanish Jasmine

With trendy tracksuits and chic jackets, Bahraini fashion brand Spanish Jasmine is all about making women feel gorgeous and feminine in casual clothes.

Designers Shaikha and Dana

This young and vibrant approach by Shaikha Al Zayani and Dana Hejres started in November 2011, and is their first foray into fashion, influenced by global catwalks and the beauty of intricate detail. The brand name Spanish Jasmine was chosen because the flower is native to tropical regions and the Middle East, known for its distinctive fragrance and has the ability to cope with the harsh weather conditions. While most local designers stick to designing dresses and traditional Bahraini attire, Spanish Jasmine’s central theme revolves around tracksuits, jackets, t-shirts and sleeveless vests for women aged 14-30. “After almost two years of research and development, refinement and conceptualization, we came with the idea of designing a casual line because this is what lacks here in Bahrain, said Ms Hejres. A few clothes for kids and men are also available in the online store, which Dana and Shaikha are planning to expand soon.

28|29 2013 May

Building a brand from scratch is never an easy task and Spanish Jasmine has had a fair share of challenges before becoming a renowned in Bahrain and the rest of the GCC. This was an even bigger challenge as Ms Al Zayani and Ms Hejres have full time jobs. “Starting a clothing line is not a small project includes many risks including the acceptance and recognition of new brands, which is critical, said Ms Al Zayani. They offer customization on their apparel as well and a new collection for Spring-Summer 2013 is in the pipeline. An online store has been established where customers can buy Spanish Jasmine garments online and have it delivered at their door. For more information visit: www.spanishjasmine.net

Cast Off and Ship Ahoy A Celebrity Experience! by Claudia Hardt May 2013 36|37

“Ready to sail?” was what I asked myself as I arrived on the vibrant island of Puerto Rico. After having served over two years on a cruise liner in the mid nineties, I was up for a new adventure on a luxurious floating city. This time discovering the world of seafaring from a different perspective and being a pampered Celebrity Summit guest instead of one of the guardian angels taking care of more than 2000 passengers on board every day. Arriving at Puerto Rico airport means first some paperwork has to be prepared in order to pass the immigration process. As the Spanish speaking Caribbean Island belongs to the United States, an ESTA registration prior to arrival is required which needs to be applied for at least 72 hours in advance. This can be done online for a charge of USD 14. If approved, an ESTA online confirmation will be sent shortly. With the printed document and an entry form that is required to be filled upon arrival, I was set up for success to pass the immigration and to find my way to the Pan American Cruise Terminal opposite the old, enchanting town of San Juan.

The Celebrity Summit is the third member of Millennium Class by Celebrity Cruises. The ship accommodates up to 2158 passengers with a length of 965 feet and speed of up to 24 knots. A cruise vacation is always filled with boatloads of activities, wonderful adventures and unforgettable experiences. There is a lot to do and see, offshore and on land. Each night a boat newsletter titled Cruise Compass and a Daily Planner with F&B and entertainment highlights, will be placed in your stateroom which makes it easy to start planning the next day. As excursions are usually quickly booked up, it’s recommended to have an idea about what to see before departing for the cruise. Book some of the most popular sight seeing tours online in advance. You are traveling between beautiful small islands where coaches, taxis and tour guides might be limited hence in order to avoid disappointments pre-planning is essential. Even if you have prebooked excursions, there is still the opportunity to cancel or change a tour as a cancellation deadline is offered on board which can be used to your advantage. The first night in my ocean view stateroom provided me with a deep and dreamless sleep. The ship reels you into a tranquil feeling like a baby in a cot, soothing your body from all the travel exertions and jet lag. 36|37 2013 May

My first port of call next morning was St Croix, US Virgin Islands. Undeniably rich in history and heritage, the Virgin Islands have a strong influence from Denmark which owned the territory until 1917. The historic districts of the main towns Frederiksted and Christiansted provide a glimpse into the past. St. Croix has been inhabited for more than 4000 years. The first overseas guest was Christopher Columbus who made a stop on his second new world tour in 1493 and gave the island its name. Christiansted, the century-old town has several important historical sites from a fort, churches to colonial West-Indian style buildings. Stroll along the small port with its many restaurants, listen to calypso music and those who would like to spend a remote day on a palm shaded white sand beach may take a five-minute boat ride from the little port to Hotel on the Cay, located on a five acre private island nestled in azure habour waters. The idyllic little town of Frederiksted is known for its cruise liner dock, your starting and ending point on St. Croix. If you are fancy listening to some undiscovered music talents, head to Rainbow Beach, a few minutes’ away from Frederiksted. It also has bars such as Rhythmus known for its Ibiza kind of style where you can mingle with hippies, dropouts, cruise liner guests and locals. Back on board you are spoilt for choice when it comes to dining options, from the main dining room called Cosmopolitan to the Oceanview Cafe, Normandie, Qsine, Bistro Five, Martini Bar, as well as Café al Bacio and Gelateria. The culinary offerings are excellent from the simple burger on the pool deck which was one of my favorites, the daily changing three-course menus in the main restaurant to the scrumptious meals during the cruise’s two black tie events. Make sure you sign up for a ‘lose weight programme’ once you get back home. You may need it!

Next stop - St. Kitts, Basseterre: A scenic rail tour on the sugar cane express is a must to see on this island. Originally built between 1912 and 1926 to deliver sugar cane from the fields to the sugar mill in Basseterre, the railway provides a fascinating route for visitors to see the island. It travels along the coastline where spectacular vistas of the ocean, cliffs and the dormant Vulcan, Mount Liamuiga, known locally as Mount Misery, await. The train rolls across tall steel bridges spanning little canyons and winds through small villages and farms. Throughout the journey local drink specialties and songs performed by an a-capella band round off an unforgettable journey while having great views onto sugar estates with abandoned windmills and chimneys. After such a fun filled ride I decided to top the day with a cruise on a state-of-the art catamaran sailing along the southern coast of St. Kitts, enjoying being whisked away, taking in the historic sights that can bee seen from the sea and feeling a bit like ‘Columbus.’ March 2013 38|39

Three days on board and still plenty to discover as another beautiful sunny day awaits me in Dominica, one of the largest and most northern of the Windward Islands in the West Indies. Situated between the French island of Guadeloupe and Martinique, Dominica is bordered on the East by the Atlantic Ocean and in the West by the calm Caribbean. Dominica with its main town Roseau is a sanctuary of rainforest, lush vegetation, waterfalls, freshwater pools and bubbling hot springs from the active underwater volcanoes. The first striking impression was the positive approach of the locals, who thought of the rain as ‘tears of joy’, and cobras as ‘loving snakes’. A beautiful scenic drive on a jeep took me through the mountains and little villages to the famous twin waterfalls, Trafalgar Falls, a 30-minute drive from the city of Roseau. An easy hike of 15 minutes leads through the rain forest to the viewing platform where stunning sights of the falls cascading down 200 feet can be enjoyed. Emerald Pool, which is located in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is another great place to explore. If brave enough, you can enjoy a refreshing swim at the base of this lush green setting in the frigid, emerald waters. You may also like to visit the hot springs and river sites where portions of the blockbuster movies Pirates of the Caribbean II and Dead Man’s Chest were shot. You want to make a reservation at Hotel California on Grenada, the next port of call. It might not really be first choice and recommendable as this is the nick name of the island’s prison, offering accommodation behind the bars with the most stunning views from a top hill side facing the ocean. Grenada is home of more than 100 types of mangoes one of the world’s chief exporters of nutmeg and has become to be known internationally as the ‘Isle of Spice.’ One of the island‘s well known residents is the grandfather of Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton. The family is still living in one of the remote coastline villages. Boat shuttle service for only a few dollars from the Grenada’s main port, St. George’s, is provided whenever cruise liners are in town.

After all these days of exploring the Caribbean islands I was ready for a day at sea, a highly anticipated and welcomed change after absorbing the numerous impressions, embracing the colourful culture, dancing salsa and sampling plenty of fresh local fruits. Tons of activities are lined up on-board and if you cannot stay away from all the happenings you will have another full day schedule. Choose from a galley tour, officers versus guest pool volleyball game, bingo, lectures in jewellery and arts, ballroom dance classes, shows and musicals in the theatre and much more. The sky is the limit! Enjoy shopping duty free products in the shopping boulevard or simply chill out in the sauna at the pool deck with amazing ocean views straight from your sauna bench where a sun set experience in 90 degrees Celsius heat sets new standards. The Caribbean is certainly a magical land dotted with palm trees, white sandy beaches, turquoise waters and sunshine paired with a climate that consistently offers the perfect place for much sought-after break. Frequently cruise ships sail in and out from popular ports such as Florida, Fort Lauderdale and Puerto Rico. The best time to travel is the beginning of the year when the weather is quite pleasant and you will even have the chance to enjoy the famous Caribbean carnival which is celebrated all over the place from Dominica to Trinidad and Tobago. If you haven’t been to the Caribbean yet, you should not miss it and if you have, you will definitely want to come back as its charm captivates you - Cast off and ship ahoy!

Superstitions Debunked! A superstition is a belief that a certain gesture will be the omen of good or bad luck. Humans have a fear of the mysterious and unknown and all of us might have practiced or followed a superstition at some point in our lives. Common ones include crossing your fingers and throwing salt for luck. These beliefs are often relics passed down from the generations. Many may fall prey to the human mind’s desire to associate thoughts and symbols with events. They should not be confused with urban legends, which are modern myths intended to give one the heebie-jeebies! Believing in either of the two does not mean you are silly. You could be a perfectly rational person who happens to believe in ghost sightings or alien abductions. Here are some common superstitions debunked on logical grounds.

Friday the 13th = Bad Luck

Fear of Many of us can’t help but get a shiver of trepidation when we realize that a Friday the 13th is lurking within the current month. References to Friday as an unlucky day first appeared in Western literature in the 17th Century—any business conducted or jobs, journeys and harvests begun were ill-fated. And it is believed that the number came to represent bad luck because that’s how many people sat at the table of the Last Supper—and the first to leave died soon afterward. Have you noticed that there is no 13th floor in most tall-rise buildings in Bahrain and airplanes don’t have the 13th row? Paraskavedekatriaphobia is the fear of Friday the 13th, and triskaidekaphobes fear 13 itself. And a fear of any date on the calendar is pure triskaidekafoolishness.

Black cats crossing your path As companion animals for humans for thousands of years, cats play all sorts of mythological roles. In ancient Egypt, cats were believed to personified goddesses; today, cats are among the most common household pets. So why keep a black cat out of your path? Most likely, this superstition arises from old beliefs in witches and their animal familiars, which were often said to take the form of domestic animals like cats The belief of witches transforming themselves into black cats in order to prowl streets unobserved became a central belief in America during the Salem witch hunts. Another debunker is that the luminosity of cats’ eyes would shock and scare those who would spot a cat in the dark. Powerful men like Hitler and Napoleon Bonaparte were prepared to conquer nations, but terrified of a little black kitty.

11:11 (Make a wish..or not!)

Do you see 11:11 on digital clocks, on building addresses, or in random places just when you’re having an epiphany? Many people make a wish every time they see 11:11 or 1:11 on the clock. No one’s been able to trace the origins of that one. It was just something they learned on the playground, or from a random relative, or through word of mouth. A few astrologers believed it to be a sign of doomsday nearing us (that was back in 2012 with the Mayan calendar end-of-the-world hype.) None of the atrocious predictions ever came true, rendering this perception null and void!

Spilling salt causes fights in the household

This is one of the many albeit unusual superstitions related to salt. It is a proven fact that salt corrodes when left on concrete structures, causes the molecules to expand, leaving flaking and cracks. If you ruin the new tiles of your mother-in-law’s kitchen, why wouldn’t she start a fight with you? Salt was a precious commodity a few centuries ago. It was believed that this prized spice was desired by humans and demons alike. It was believed that demons would appear when salt was spilled, and tossing a pinch of the same spilled salt over the shoulder would drive them away. No one has died yet because of some salt-deprived demon, proving this madcap superstition false.

Breaking a Mirror – Bad Luck

Most will tell you that the agreed upon time span for bad luck is 7 years. Seven years is also how long it takes to fully rejuvenate the entire physical body. Since a mirror was thought to be a reflection of the soul, breaking a mirror was harmful to the soul. To counter the ill effects, you can take the mirror outside and bury it in the moonlight. The idea that harm yourself if you harm your image is an example of what is called imitative magic, and is not true. The concept of bad luck is just blaming your own failures on an ‘invisible force.’

Saying ‘God Bless You’ after sneezing

- You may think it is etiquette, pure and simple, but blessing someone after he or she sneezes is actually a common superstition. In the 6th century, people were congratulated for sneezing because it was thought they were expelling evil spirits. Early Romans believed that a good sneeze could release your soul into the world, and a «bless you» would keep it safe. Next time you sneeze, check for flu symptoms instead!

At the start of lap 3 the Red Bull made a robust move on Rosberg for the lead into Turn 1 and Vettel set off to build a comfortable lead which did not come under serious threat to the end.

Latest technology products for an easier life Hady El-Shazly We reviewed together in the magazine for the previous month some new technological products that makes our lives easier and better, and in this issue we offer you some of the new products for this month wishing to help you in the search for what satisfies you more.

Velocity Micro Vector Z25

The Velocity Micro Vector Z25 is a mid-tower PC with all the goods. It comes from a company that knows how to build a very good PC with a great bang for the buck, and it succeeds again with the Vector Z25, which earns the Editor’s Choice winning midrange desktop PC. It has the power to quickly complete multimedia tasks (photo and video), while keeping a little in reserve for moderate to hardcore gaming. It’s the kind of PC that you would’ve paid $2,500 for in the old days, and for that type of user it comes highly recommended. The device costs about 400 BHD in the market.

NEC MultiSync EA244WMi

The NEC MultiSync family of business monitors has a new addition, and it’s a winner. The NEC MultiSync EA244WMi uses a 24-inch IPS panel to deliver robust colors, accurate grayscale reproduction, and wide off-angle viewing with a cost of 145 BHD. Moreover, it is offers virtually every video input you’ll ever need, has a four-port USB hub, and is equipped with a highly adjustable ergonomic stand. It’ll save you money on your utility bill, too. My gripes are minor; the USB ports are 2.0 instead of the speedier 3.0, and you have to use your graphics card control panel to rotate the image when pivoting the panel. Nevertheless, the EA244WMI is an outstanding business monitor and snags our Editors’ Choice for mid-sized business monitors.

Trendnet AC1750 Wireless Router

Trendnet just raised the bar for draft 802.11ac routers. The AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router (TEW-812DRU) cranked out throughput the likes of which we have never seen before. This router delivers to the market the increased speed and ranges that 802.11ac is all about. Excellent throughput, excellent range, and improvements in features and design since I last took a look at a Trendnet router all make this a superb piece of home networking equipment.

HP ElitePad 900

The HP ElitePad 900 ($799 list) is an enterprise-oriented Windows 8 slate tablet that combines the looks of a consumer-oriented tablet like the Apple iPad with enterprise friendly features that corporate users need. It’s an allday tablet with a plethora of add-on accessories that bridge the gap between laptop and tablet, without being classified as a hybrid or convertible tablet. It’s got all day battery performance and 4G HSPA+ WWAN networking, but unless you’re a HP shop there are other slate tablet choices out there.

Canon PowerShot A1400

The Canon PowerShot A1400 isn’t the type of camera that a lot of folks are going to get too excited about. It’s a budget shooter that’s light on fancy features like Wi-Fi and GPS, and it doesn’t pack a super-fast lens or a big image sensor. What the 16-megapixel camera does do is capture sharp images, and more importantly it’s easy enough that anyone can use it. There’s an optical viewfinder, a rare find in all but high-end digital cameras, and because it uses AA batteries you can easily find power even if you’re in a remote area. It’s not perfect; the HD video is a bit disappointing and photos are rather noisy, even at lower ISO settings, but at $110, it’s tough to complain. Still, the A1400 is impressive enough to earn our Editors’ Choice award for budget cameras, a title last bestowed to the now-discontinued Panasonic Lumix DMC-S3.

Porsche Centre Bahrain reveals new generation

Cayman and Cayman S

Manama. Porsche Centre Bahrain, Behbehani Brothers wll, revealed the new Cayman and Cayman S at an exclusive launch on Monday. Around 600 guests witnessed the unveiling of the sports coupé at the Gulf Hotel in Manama.

The third generation of the two-seater has been completely redeveloped. It is lower and longer, lighter and faster, more efficient and more powerful than ever. A longer wheelbase, wider track and larger wheels enhance the driving performance of the mid-engine sports car to an unparalleled level in its competitive class. The new Cayman is – after the 911 Carrera and Boxster – the third sports car model line from Porsche to feature innovative lightweight body design. Porsche’s latest model is up to 30 kg lighter, depending on the specific model and equipment, and consumes up to 15 per cent less fuel per 100 km than the predecessor – despite higher engine and driving performance. Featuring a new lighter design and powered by a 2.7-litre flat-six cylinder engine, the sports coupé produces 275 horsepower. It accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds, depending on the equipment, and reaches a top speed of 266 km/h. Its NEDC fuel consumption is 7.7 l/100 km when equipped with Porsche

May 2013 84|85

Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK). Its bigger sibling, the Cayman S makes use of a 3.4-litre naturally aspirated flat-six cylinder engine for an output of 325 horsepower. Acceleration time from a standstill to 100 km/h time is 4.7 seconds with a top speed of 283 km/h. The NEDC fuel consumption value is 8.0 l/100 km with PDK. Commenting on the occasion, Morgan Sunderland, Brand Manager at Porsche Centre Bahrain, said: “The new Cayman is built for driving through bends like few other sports cars can: the midengined sports coupé sets new standards in its class for driving performance with a longer wheelbase, all-round new chassis and lower weight.” Aesthetically, the two-seater stays true to its heritage. It has been redesigned to become even more distinctive. The new model

features an extended wheelbase with shorter overhangs. The standard 18- and 19-inch Cayman wheels give it not only a sportier appeal but also better lateral stability and handling properties. The car’s styling is marked by precise lines and razor-sharp sculpted edges. They emphasise the vehicle’s low, extended silhouette with the windscreen shifted forward and the roof line that reaches far back. Typical of the more advanced styling is the shoulder line, which runs from the wings towards the rear side panels. The door mirrors are newly positioned near the top shoulder. Especially expressive and characteristic are the dynamic recesses in the doors, which guide induction air into the distinctive air scoops on the rear side panels and then directly to the engine. From the front end, the new Cayman is marked by its dominant cooling air inlets, which increase in size towards the sides of the car. Integrated in them are the round front lights with fourpoint daytime running lights or position lights – an unmistakable

identifying feature of the new Cayman. Just as unique to the new generation of the sport coupé are the large, low rear lid made of aluminium and the rear section with its wrap-around edges. At the upper end of the rear window, an LED brake light spanning the entire window width warns traffic behind. Mounted directly to the rear lid is the thin blade of the rear spoiler, which – in contrast to that of the Boxster – is higher and deploys at a steeper angle. Morgan Sunderland added: “Our two-seater sports coupé is a genuinely new car featuring drastic changes in the design, but without losing its valuable Porsche identity. I am convinced that the Cayman will be a real sight on our roads.” The new generation also comes with new optional features. Customers can now order Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) – a system that controls the distance to the car ahead in traffic and vehicle speed. Other options include a specially developed Burmester sound system.

How men should dress for different occasions

The key to be sparkling Hady El-Shazly

As men, we have our routines, and we don’t like it when they’re disturbed. Any pressure to change is unwelcome. Unfortunately, different occasions call for different dress codes, and as much as you’d like to go to your best buddy’s wedding wearing your favorite pair of jeans and a white T-shirt, you just can’t. It’s time to shed some light on the appropriate dress code for some of the occasions and events you’re most likely to have to attend.

Wedding

Buying gifts is not only a headache, but so is trying to figure out what to wear. The fact is that your dress will depend in part on the wedding, and whether or not you play a role in it. If you’re the best man, chances are the bride and groom will have already picked out what you’ll be wearing. If your attire hasn’t been chosen for you, then the basic rule of thumb is to look as good as you can without upstaging the groom. This usually means opting for a classic tuxedo. The same goes for black-tie affairs, even if you’re not at the head table. If you don’t own one, renting is pretty affordable. As with anything, shop around to get the best deal. There are a variety of styles available for tuxedos nowadays. You can go with the classic bow tie and cummerbund look, or you can choose to be a little more daring and go for a vest and tie combo. If you’re just another guest and the wedding invitation said nothing about dress code, a nice suit and tie is your best bet.

Funeral

Unlike a wedding, the dress code at a funeral is the same regardless of your affiliation to the deceased. The idea is that you want your look to be subdued. Dressing appropriately is a sign of respect. Dark colored suits, such as navy, charcoal or black are the way to go. Avoid ties and shirts with loud patterns or bright colors. For example, a black suit with a white shirt and a simple burgundy tie is perfectly acceptable. Make sure you’re well groomed; the key word is neat. Finally, black shoes are recommended.

First date

What you wear on a first date depends on the gal and the locale. However, better to spring for a fancier venue if it means you can show off how good you look in your classy threads. There are a few fairly safe combinations you can put together. An open-collared shirt under a jacket is a good way to go. This option has the added bonus that if she gets chilly during the date, you can offer her the jacket to put over her shoulders. Another way to go is a wool or cotton sweater (crew or V-neck over a shirt). In terms of pants, wool or cotton both are great options. If you’re feeling a little adventurous, you can even go with corduroy. For a more laid-back look, a nice pair of trendy jeans can do the trick. Black leather loafers are a safe bet no matter where you’re going. If you want to be trendier, spring for a suede shoe or a designer running shoe. You’ll want to add your favorite cologne to the mix as well.

Meeting the parents

Meeting the parents is all about the first impression. If you’ve got a quirky personality, now is not the time to let it show. Let them fall in love with you first, and then let them get to know you a bit better. Chances are her dad is going to be looking for faults from the get-go, so don’t be afraid to ask your girlfriend what he likes and what he doesn’t like regarding fashion and style. You can’t go wrong if you dress in a conservative manner. A good example would be a pair of khakis with a tucked in dress shirt or a polo shirt. You can choose between black or brown shoes, but leave the alligator skins at home for the day. Being cleanly shaved is a plus. If you have long hair, make sure that it’s not in your eyes all the time, because eye contact is very important. A note about cologne: You may want to pass on it. Some scents may be a little bit too radical for your lady’s parents, or they may even be allergic to it. A quick shower beforehand should do the trick just fine.

VIP lounge / nightclub

When you’re hitting the clubs, you need to remember your objectives to land a few ladies’ numbers, or at least get in a few dances. In other words, dress to impress. You want to be trendy. Leave the faded jeans and sneakers at home if you want to be able to get into the trendy clubs. At the same time, don’t look like you just came from the office. This is a good time to break out your vintage clothes or your patterned buttondown shirts. You don’t want to look uptight, so make sure you’ve got an open collar and your shirt isn’t tucked. Clubs, especially those that are packed with hot chicks who grind to the music all night, tend to get sweaty. Use cologne liberally, but not to the point where the girl dancing with you needs to crane her neck backward for fear of being asphyxiated. A big part of looking good has to do with confidence and attitude, so don’t look like you’re trying too hard. Don’t be that guy who’s wearing shades when it’s pitch black in the club. Leave the black spandex tee to the bouncer.

Job interview

Job interviews are tricky to dress for because what you wear can vary greatly depending on the company and the position. It’s easy to come in underdressed and look unprofessional, or to come in overdressed and look like you’re trying too hard. If you’re interviewing for a prestigious corporate law firm, or for a position in the financial sector, there’s no question that you should dress conservatively with dark suits and tasteful tie and shirt combinations. Over-the-top patterns are frowned upon, but a pin-stripe suit is both classy and sophisticated. However, you’re interviewing for a job with a new age IT firm, the suit and tie method may not be the

best idea. Many of these companies have little to no dress code. For that kind of setting, a pair of trousers with a button-down shirt may be all that you need. Tucked in or not will depend largely on the corporate culture of the firm. Try to get some inside information from friends or acquaintances in the industry before your interview. When in doubt, overdress. It is much easier to dress down while you’re in the waiting room -- by removing your suit jacket, for example -- than to kick it up a notch if you’re too casual. Make sure that you feel at ease in whatever you wear, as this will help you to remain relaxed, cool and confident. Regardless of what job you’re being interviewed for, it’s important that you remain well-groomed. No one wants to hire a slob. Clean-shaven or neatly trimmed facial hair is essential. If you choose to wear cologne, remember that, in most interview settings, you won’t be sitting close enough for the interviewer to smell it. If he does, that means you’re wearing too much.

“Casual” events

Have you ever wondered what it means when you get an invitation to a dinner party or some other event and the dress code is “casual”? Or what about those “casual” Fridays at the office? Let me define the word by telling you what it’s not. It’s not jeans and a T-shirt. It’s not Bermuda shorts and a Hawaiian shirt. It’s not even khakis and an untucked polo shirt. What you should wear is next: For a lot of men who don’t have office jobs, dressing “casually” is actually dressing up, as opposed to dressing down. Casual actually describes the state of dress that comes when a man is dressed up, but not formal. For example, at a casual event, you could wear a jacket with an open-collared shirt. That jacket can even be of a light color. You can wear shoes that are not black, as long as they’re not sneakers, and as long as they match your attire and are the same color as your belt. Also note that at some casual events, it may be better to wear a tie. Once again, the tie can be of a light color and may be patterned. As always, if you’re unsure about the tie, wear it; if you see that it’s unnecessary, just take it off.

When speaking in public

Speaking in public can frazzle a lot of men. No matter how well you dress, it won’t make you a great orator, but there are a few tips you can follow to make your life easier. The key is to wear something that will relax your audience. Even the most attentive person will be distracted by bright colors and wild patterns. Instead of wearing that burnt orange tie, you may want to aim for the calming effect of cool colors, such as blue, green and gray (as opposed to warm colors such as red, orange and yellow). You also want to make sure that any stripes you choose to wear head in the same direction, preferably vertical, so that attention is drawn to your face. If possible, go monochrome. Being dressed all in the same color is not only trendy, but it also focuses your audience’s attention. Without any lines or breaks in color to catch their eyes, they have little choice but to focus on your words.

Ready to roll

Now that you know what’s expected, the next time an event comes along that breaks from your normal routine, you won’t need to worry about it because you’ll know how to dress the part.
