Let me start by wishing all our readers Ramadan Kareem. May the holy month shower its blessings upon you and may all your endeavours be bring you success. I am very thrilled to announce an exciting new concept that Sabaya is harnessing from this month. It is called Augmented Reality, a concept through which you can not only read text, but also see videos. All you need to do is download the app on your Apple or Android device and then scan a page which says ‘Go Live’ to be redirected to a video of that section. Instructions will be given separately. Try it and give us your feedback. In this issue, we review some spa services offered by the Ritz Carlton Bahrain Hotel and Spa. “ Slumdog Millionaire” actress Freida Pinto, the global ambassador of the Because I am A Girl Campaign (BIAAG), visited Ethiopia for the first time as part of her role to support Plan International’s projects. She says educating and empowering girls is the way forward worldwide. Because I Am a Girl (BIAAG) is Plan’s global initiative. Launched Oct 11, 2012, it is aimed to create sustainable projects in developing countries to give girls access to clean water, food, health care, education and protection from violence and exploitation. “If we educate and empower girls, they will reach their fullest potential, pulling themselves and their families out of every problem they might possibly face” said Freida.
Jolie thanks fans for support on 1st red carpet appearance
Angelina Jolie made her first public appearance, after revealing the news about her undergoing double mastectomy last month, at her fiance Brad Pitt’s zombie thriller ‘World War Z.’ Jolie even thanked the world for her support, saying that it meant the world for her, the Mirror reported. The 37-year-old actress was accompanied by Pitt but had to miss her aunt’s funeral, as it was on the same day. 10 •

‘Fast and Furious 6’ tops weekend box office charts again
‘Fast and Furious 6’ has occupied the top spot at the box office for the second consecutive weekend. The movie is expected to add another 34.5 million dollars to its North American ticket collection, keeping it at the top after debuting to more than 120 million dollars over the Memorial Day holiday, the New York Post reported. Magic-heist thriller ‘Now You See Me’ exceeded industry expectations with 28.1 million dollars earning and landed at second spot. ‘After Earth’ opened to 27 million dollars collection, and took the third position. Animated ‘Epic’ and ‘Star Trek: Into Darkness’ tied for the fourth place with both earning 16.4 million, while ‘The Hangover Part III’ came in at the fifth place with 15.9 million dollars collection.
Will Smith makes son Jaden perform scene with snakes
Indian origin Hollywood director M.Night Shyamalan is all set with his next magnum opus ‘After Earth’, which will see fatherson duo Will Smith and Jaden Smith back on screen. The sci-fi adventure is set in a future where mankind has fled Earth. Will and his real-life son Jaden play estranged father and son military men who crash-land on the abandoned planet. Scenes depicting Earth as filled with giant fearsome animals were shot in the jungles of Costa Rica. We hear that some of the scenes were in fact quite dangerous for son Jaden Smith, reveals dad Will.

Cruze, who is ready to give birth to her second child, will start work on the follow-up next April.
Kim, Kris officially divorced
After going through a long legal war, socialite Kim Kardashian and basketball player Kris Humphries are now officially divorced. The duo was married for 72 days in 2011 and filed for divorce back then, but were unable to come to a settlement. Kris demanded annulment of the marriage, but settled for a divorce in April this year. The final divorce judgment was filed late Monday evening in Los Angeles Superior Court. Kim and Kris entered into a written agreement regarding division of assets and spousal support, but specifics were not disclosed, reports eonline.com. Kim is expecting her first child with rapper Kanye West and is due to give birth in July.

George Michael won’t be charged for falling out of car
George Michael will not face any charges after falling out of a moving car on a motorway. The 49-year-old star, who spent nearly two weeks in hospital after suffering head injuries, gave traffic police a statement after leaving the hospital last week and officers have now closed the case, the Mirror reported. The ‘Careless Whisper’ hit maker was not even fined for not putting on his seat belt when he tumbled out of the Range Rover on the M1 in near St Albans, Herts, as cars swerved and braked to avoid him.

The pregnant reality star’s nude form has been preserved in all it’s glory by celebrity artist Daniel Edwards. The sculptor’s new show L.A. Fertility features a life size nude of Kim - and the artist’s imagined version of her unborn foetus. Danielle Lloyd has revealed that her friend Katie Price doesn’t like being photographed whilst pregnant. Speaking in her Closer magazine column, the wife of footballer Jamie O’Hara admitted that Price is struggling with her pre-baby body confidence, the Mirror reported. Lloyd, who is pregnant herself, admitted that she thinks that Price is quite self-conscious about her figure in general, and the criticism that she faces on twitter has made the situation all the more.
Pamela Anderson’s ‘sexist and degrading’ ad banned
A TV advertisement starring Pamela Anderson has been banned for being sexist and degrading to women. In the commercial, for web hosting firm Dreamscape Networks, the actress is seen chairing a meeting of men before her assistant pours cream into a cup of coffee while showing her cleavage, the Mirror reported. One of the men then fantasies about Anderson and her assistant dancing together in bikinis. But the company has argued that the motive of the ad was to portray the ‘Baywatch’ star and her assistant as ‘attractive, dynamic and confident business people’.
Kate Winslet expecting little rock and roller
Oscar-winning British actress Kate Winslet is expecting her first child with third husband Ned Rocknroll, whom she married last year, a spokeswoman said Tuesday. “Kate and Ned are delighted” at the news, a publicist told Hollywood celebrity magazine People, while another spokeswoman confirmed the information to AFP but made no comment. The 37-year-old married Rocknroll -- a nephew of British tycoon Richard Branson -- last December. Michael Jackson’s daughter, Paris, has reportedly been rushed to hospital after she tried to take her own life. “Paris is physically fine and is getting appropriate medical attention,” Perry Sanders, an attorney for Paris’ grandmother and guardian, Katherine Jackson, said in a statement. Celebrity website TMZ.com, which first reported the suicide attempt, said Paris had been taken from her family’s home in Calabasas, California, by ambulance at about 2 am Wednesday.

Actress Amanda Bynes refused to do her own daily radio show offered by Playboy radio as she wants to focus on her music career. A charming and witty man, Qahtan Qahtani is a true pioneer in the acting profession, and is the pride of Bahrain’s film and television industry. He has worked in the Aand is still going strong. Mr Qahtani walks us down memory lane and tells us all about his journey into acting while reminiscing about the most cherished moments in his career with Puja Tiwari.
Tell me all about yourself. I graduated from the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts in Kuwait Back in 1978 as a director and actor on stage. Since then, I started my career with different production houses in Kuwait, Bahrain and some other theatre groups in the region. I worked very hard in this business, it’s very limited here in Bahrain since we don’t have the infrastructure, the base for this profession. Later on I joined Bahrain TV in 1984 as Head of Production when TV had just started. They wanted someone to create some programmes and dramas. I can say that I’m a pioneer in the field for Bahrain Television. I concentrated on producing full-fledged Bahraini dramas, to showcase the culture and heritage. The dramas were a great success and we received a lot of positive feedback from viewers and bagged many awards. I worked to subtitle the series as well so expats could understand them. We built the base as Bahrain become number one in drama production from around 1986 to the late 90s. I was then transferred to the Culture and Heritage Directorate and I became the adviser for the undersecretary at that time and we started
working on theatre again. Soon, I decided to have an early retirement. My last project at that time was to supervise in building the first ever Cultural Hall in Bahrain, that’s the one next to the Marina Club. Tell me more about your hobbies. I love music, especially jazz and classical genre because it makes me feel good and relaxes me. Even when I’m upset about something, I turn up the volume and listen to music to boost my mood. I also love travelling because it gives you a chance to explore things and changes your perspective. I also enjoy cooking and I can cook different cuisines. I even contemplate on opening a restaurant one day perhaps! Now let’s go back in time. How did you get into acting at that point of time when the industry wasn’t even in a substantial one in the region? Since I was a baby, I was hooked onto television and astonished by the actors and I could see myself there. When I was in school I joined the scouts’ movement which gave me an opportunity to start acting on little gatherings. In my early teen years, I and July 2013 •

A CLASS APART a few guys from the neighbourhood decided to build a little stage at a friend’s house and we started doing small skits and inviting the other kids to come and watch us for a fee of 100 fils. My father wanted me to join the faculty of geology because he used to work for a petroleum company and believed that was the future. Unfortunately, I couldn’t study geology because it was very dull and changed my subject to psychology. I couldn’t even do that so I returned to Bahrain and started working. Then I got an opportunity to join the Institute of Dramatic Arts in Kuwait as they came to Bahrain and chose a few people. How was your parents’ reaction when you broke the news to them about getting into the acting institute? My parents weren’t happy about the decision because they felt that the acting industry had no scope and they were right because until now we don’t have the proper infrastructure for this industry in Bahrain. Back in the 70s and 80s, there was a demand for movies and theatre but later on this just died down and people started running away from the art industry altogether. How many series and movies have you acted in throughout your career? Plenty! I’ve definitely lost count because I’ve been acting since my school days.
“I was ecstatic, filled with joy that I’ve done something that I really wanted to do and at the same time I was heartbroken that didn’t have a field to work in Bahrain.” What message do you have for aspiring actors, especially here in Bahrain? May God help you!(with a chuckle.) I hope that God will help you with your efforts to establish theatrical and television movement in this part of the world. How would you compare the acting industry in the GCC to other, more wellestablished industries? The acting industry in the gulf is coming up and trying to produce series which are aired on TV. In most channels, you’ll see an Egyptian series, a Syrian series and a Gulf series along with it. There is a big competition in this industry to produce better drama series as of now so it looks promising.

I heard you’re doing a drama series for Ramadan in UAE. Tell me more about it. It’s called Yamin Hawa, which is a very traditional name. It’ll be aired on Summer Dubai channel. The writer and director are Bahrainis and the cast is from all over the Gulf. My role is that of a man who has been married two times, and has children from both the marriages and has a conflict with many things now. What’s the best way to unwind and de-stress after a long day at work? Just go to sleep! We spend long hours shooting every day, sometimes outdoors and especially during summer the heat is a killer! Sleep is the best stress buster. What is the most memorable moment of your career? The most memorable moment of my life was the day when I came back to Bahrain with my certificate as a professional actor and director. I was ecstatic, filled with joy that I’ve done something that I really wanted to do and at the same time I was heartbroken that didn’t have a field to work in Bahrain. Sadly, I joined a school as a teacher due to lack of acting openings. Later on, I got offered to become Head of
A CLASS APART “During the time I was studying, most of my time used to be in front of the mirror, practicing my facial expressions. I think this is one of the best techniques in acting.” Production for Bahrain TV, which would mean that I would have to forget my acting career for a very long time because of the production element. I didn’t know what the future would hold, so I took up the offer. Those were the two memorable moments of my career. I’m sure acting has got you used to being in character and having the right facial expressions for different roles. What tips do you have for aspiring actors? During the time I was studying, most of my time used to be in front of the mirror, practicing my facial expressions. I think this is one of the best techniques in acting. In theatre, we have to exaggerate our expressions and voice emotion in our tone. Television is a different story. First, examine your face well as an actor and see which muscles you can move. Second is the relaxation. Relaxation is important and there are exercises that you can do to achieve this. Third, be careful in choosing which movie or drama you will be in. Be picky in choosing your character. Don’t just take up anything for the sake of it. This is how you will gain respect and fans. What has been the funniest moment in your career? This was the funniest and the most dangerous. I was acting in Cairo in an epic series, and we were riding horses for a battle scene. The director wanted to shoot a scene in the desert before sunrise when it was hazy to add to the dramatics. So we were shooting a scene which showed the army riding on horses and coming down a hill. Because it was dark, the director had big lights put on top of the hill. The light men put on the lights suddenly and a technical glitch made the lights go on and off and the horses got startled and went out of control and my horse ran miles and miles into the desert. The desert had a sharp valley and that was the dangerous aspect. I was about to fall off but didn’t and later gained control of the horse. July 2013 •

Red Bull Collective Art, in partnership with Adobe and Nissan, took place last month at the floating disc at the Amwaj Lagoon. The idea is that images or words are collectively assembled, with each successive person adding to the artwork, after seeing the last part of the previous design. As it stands now, Red Bull Collective Art is the largest piece of art in the world. Red Bull Collective Art proved that Art is an International language that travels across borders and bridges between cultures.

complete an aspect of the website like filling out your profile, visiting the website on a daily basis or inviting friends to join, you are endorsed with more coins. BRAND FACTORY We had a Q&A session with Rabih, the creator of Wamli.com, who elaborately explained further aspects of the website. 1. What is Wamli about? It is an online community where people come together to have fun, discover and shop crazy-funky-cool products.

2. How many products does Wamli have on its website? We currently have over 750 products and 44 brands 3 Does it cater to customers across the region or is it limited to UAE and Bahrain for the time being? We sell worldwide since we launched, not limited to UAE or Bahrain. 4. How is Wamli different from other online shopping websites? Wamli is different from the products it sources to the social shopping experience and its unique loyalty and rewards program. 5. How was it formed? Whose idea was it? I (Rabih) came up with the concept of mixing game mechanics with social e-commerce, and started the project soon after. After few month of development, I approached my cousin Imad, who was a head buyer at Beirut Duty Free at the time, and had a passion for design and products. I showed him an early prototype of Wamli and he was immediately immersed. Later we contacted other family members and friends who, like us, were geeks and design lovers. They in turn fell in love with the concept and came on board giving life to Wamli.

6. Please elaborate on what Wamli hopes to bring to customers through its website in future? Well, we only just started, Wamli is a great and a scalable platform, and the potential is huge. We also collect data on browsing and shopping behavior, we are going to make use of this data we’re collecting to personalize the shopping experience.

First I met Mai (my mayti) and we call ourselves Shawties. She is artistic, smart, sweet, hardworking and beautiful and has the most positive vibes ever. She’s been there for me in the ups and in the downs and has always been just a phone call away She personifies the word ‘bestie.’ I could always lean on her very strong presence and independent personally. Then I met Aysha, who works with me. Everyone at work refers to her as ‘Tibjiti’ which means the other pair. I fell in love with Aysha before I met her. When I travelled to India my workmates called me and told me my soul mate just joined our organization I said “Soul mate? What do you mean?” They said “She is like you. Everything you girls do is identical from your spiritual interest to your hobbies.”So the day I came back to work I went to meet her and it’s very rare to find people that you click with instantly! Ever since then, Mai, Aysha and I are inseparable. We feed on each other’s positive energy. Mai is our creative designer; she has the most creative brain cells ever. Aysha is our little nutritionist, she keeps giving us healthy recipes (we don’t end up trying all of them; they get really crazy at times!) The thing with my shawties is that all along I thought I was a weirdo. I don’t really click deeply with anyone easily, but when they came to my

rriving comfortably on Oman Air for a long weekend retreat, I started my sightseeing in the old town of Zanzibar’s capital, Stone Town, straight from the airport, only a short 15 minute drive away. It’s easy to get around in Stone Town either by yourself while wandering through the narrow streets with a map, or you can arrange a private tour with one of the local tour operators who will adapt the city tour to suit your interest and time frame.
Places to visit are the House of Wonders, Arab Fort, Palace Museum, Livingstone’s House, Old Dispensary and the Anglican Cathedral.
Discover Stone Town with its winding alleys, bustling markets, mosques and historical Arab houses, many of them beautifully decorated with brass-studded, carved, wooden doors, initially protecting the properties from elephants coming closer and entering the houses in the good old days. Only a short stroll away from Princess Salme’s heritage is the previous home of another well-known resident of Zanzibar – Freddy Mercury. Born as Farouk Bulsara in 1946 his family emigrated from India to Zanzibar. You can explore the early life and childhood of the rock legend and lead singer of the famous band Queen and follow in the footsteps of Zanzibar’s most popular son while walking through Shangani where Freddie Mercury lived with his family.

Most of the houses seen today were built in the 19th century when the island belonged to the Sultanate of Oman - from the end of the 17th till the early beginning of the 20th century - and became an important trading hub in the Indian Ocean. The city got its unique name from its building material, the locally sourced coral rock of Zanzibar. The House of Wonders was built in 1883 as a ceremonial palace for Sultan Barghash and was the first in Zanzibar to have electric light, an electric lift as well as running water which caused the local people to call it Beit el Ajaib, meaning the House of Wonders. Today, it hosts the National Museum where to see many interesting relics from the time of the Sultans and the early explores. A stone throw away from the House of Wonders and the Palace Museum is Tembo House Hotel, situated at the seafront of Stone Town. This historical building had various functions since the beginning of the 19th century from serving as the American Consulate to being home of one 34 •

of the largest trading companies in the Indian Ocean. After the building run down it underwent a major renovation and became eventually a hotel, beautifully decorated with Oriental and traditional Zanzibari ornaments, antiques and furniture. The Palace Museum, residence of the Zanzibari Royal family in old days, was built in the late 1890 and has a room dedicated to the life and fascinating story of Princess Salme, Princess of Zanzibar and Oman, daughter of Sultan Said the Great, born in 1844 in Beit el Mtoni, largest of the palaces in Zanzibar at that time, where she used to live up to the age of seven before she moved to another residence. Her mother was a Circassian slave, one of the concubines of the Royal harem. Princess Salme felt in love with a German merchant and the romantic affair which flourished from rooftop to rooftop across the narrow gap of their town houses situated next to each other eventually led to elopement – a scandal at that time. Princess Salme and the German businessman married and moved

Eating Healthy during the month of Ramadan The holy month of Ramadan is observed by millions of Muslims around the world. Here are a few tips to ensure good health during this time of fasting and contemplation.
Include all the food groups daily. A healthy, balanced diet usually includes foods from the different food groups in the correct amounts daily: at least six servings of unrefined starches, four servings of lean proteins, five servings of vegetables and fruits, two servings of low-fat dairy and three servings of healthy fats. This will ensure an adequate intake of macro nutrients (energy, carbohydrates, protein and fat), micro nutrients (vitamins and minerals) and fibre. 36 •

Bear in mind that these are general guidelines and that individual requirements will vary. For example, a very active person will require more servings of starch and protein. Eat plenty of fibre-rich foods. Fibre is essential to prevent constipation, control blood-sugar levels, reduce high cholesterol levels and increase satiety levels. If you haven’t been eating a fibre-rich diet, it’s not a good idea to go big on it when you’ve already started
fasting - it could result in bloating or (ironically) constipation. It’s easy to meet your fibre requirement during this month: at the early-morning meal (suhur), include a fibre-rich option like whole-wheat toast with tea or coffee and cereal with some fruit. For the evening meal (iftaar), include pasta or brown rice with lentils and vegetables, or a curry with whole-wheat bread. Haleem, a common lentil-based soup eaten during this month, is

By adding a handful of nuts and seeds to your early morning or evening meal, you can be assured of some good, heart-healthy fats. Drink plenty of fluids. Fluid intake is often neglected or forgotten during this busy month. It’s essential to ensure adequate fluid intake. This van be achieved by having drinks at sehri, iftaar and during the course of the evening. Low fluid levels can cause dehydration, headaches, low blood pressure or constipation. Aim to consume at least 6 – 8 glasses of water daily. Other drink options that can be included are tea, coffee, fruit juice or milkshake.
Include some healthy fats Fats not only increase the palatability of a dish, but are essential to help absorb fat-soluble vitamins. Consumption of unhealthy saturated fats (full-cream dairy, chicken skin, visible fats on meat, Brazil nuts, coconut, coconut milk, hard brick margarines, butter, ghee, coffee creamers, tea whiteners and palm kernel oil) and trans fats (commercially fried foods, biscuits, cakes, crackers and packet chips) raises the risk for cardiovascular disease by increasing bad cholesterol levels and lowering good cholesterol levels. Cut back on fat-laden options like deep-fried foods, biscuits, cakes, vetkoek, fried chilli bites, rich and creamy desserts and drinks - they provide little nutritional value and contain excessive amounts of kilojoules, causing weight gain, nausea and discomfort after eating. Rather choose lower-fat or fatfree options to prepare various dishes, for example skim or low-fat milk for milkshakes, low-fat evaporated milk instead of cream, or low-fat cottage cheese instead of sour cream. Good fats include monounsaturated (avocado, olives, olive oil, almonds, peanuts, pecan nuts, cashew nuts) and polyunsaturated fats (oily fish, seeds, soft tub margarine and vegetable oils).

This will enable you to feel less lethargic, more fit, alert and able to engage in the long evening prayer. If you haven’t been physically active in the past, try to include some of the above exercises. Just make sure you don’t overexert yourself.
Suggestions on what to eat during Ramadan. Iftar The food eaten immediately after sunset to break the fast is known as Iftar. Here are some healthy foods to eat during the Iftar: Three or four dates, 1 serving (4 oz.) juice, 1 cup of vegetable soup with some pasta or graham crackers. The body’s immediate need at the time of iftar is to get an easily available energy source in the form of glucose for every living cell, particularly the brain and nerve cells. Dates and juices are good sources of sugars. Dates and juice in the above quantity are sufficient to bring low blood glucose levels to normal levels. Juice and soup help maintain water and mineral balance in the body. An unbalanced diet and too many servings of sherbets and sweets with added sugar have been found to be unhealthy.
Suhur (pre-dawn meal) There is no need to consume excess food at dinner or suhur (the light meal generally eaten about half an hour to one hour before dawn). The body has regulatory mechanisms that activate during fasting. There is efficient 38 •

utilization of body fat. Basal metabolism slows down during Ramadan fasting. A diet that is less than a normal amount of food intake but balanced is sufficient enough to keep a person healthy and active during the month of Ramadan. Here are some healthy foods to eat during Sahur: Consume a light sahur. Eat whole wheat or oat cereal or whole wheat bread, 1-2 servings with a cup of milk. Add 2-3 teaspoons of olive oil or any other monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats in a salad or the cereal. Eat 1-2 servings of fruits, as a last item.
Dinner Meal Consume foods from all the following food groups: Meat/Bean Group Chicken, beef, lamb, goat, fish, 1-2 servings (serving size = a slice =1 oz); green pea, chickpea (garbanzo, chick peas, humus), green gram, black gram, lentil, lima bean and other beans, 1 serving (half cup). Meat and beans are a good source of protein,
FEATURE minerals, and certain vitamins. Beans are a good source of dietary fibre. Bread/Cereal Group Whole wheat bread, 2 servings (serving size = 1 oz) or cooked rice, one cup or combination. This group is a good source of complex carbohydrates, which are a good source of energy and provide some protein, minerals, and dietary fibre. Milk Group Milk or laban without sugar, yogurt or cottage cheese (one cup). Those who cannot tolerate whole milk must try fermented products such as buttermilk and yogurt. Milk and dairy products are good sources of protein and calcium, which are essential for body tissue maintenance and several physiological functions. Vegetable Group Mixed vegetable salad, 1 serving (one cup - lettuce, carrot, parsley, cucumber, broccoli, coriander leaves, cauliflower or other vegetables as desired.) Add 2 teaspoons of olive oil or any polyunsaturated oil and 2 spoons of vinegar. Polyunsaturated fat provides the body with essential fatty acids and keto acids. Cooked vegetables such as guar beans, French beans, okra, eggplant, bottle gourd, cabbage, spinach, 1 serving (4 oz). Vegetables are a good source of dietary fiber, vitamin A, carotene, lycopenes, and other phytochemicals, which are antioxidants.
Fruits Group 1-2 servings of citrus and/or other fruits. Eat fruits as the last item of the dinner or soon after dinner, to facilitate digestion and prevent many gastrointestinal problems. Citrus fruits provide vitamin C. Fruits are a good source of dietary fibre. Fruits and mixed nuts may be eaten as a snack after dinner or tarawiaha or before sleep.
FEW SUGGESTIONS • Drink sufficient water between Iftar and sleep to avoid dehydration. • Consume sufficient vegetables at meals. Eat fruits at the end of the meal but remember to wait for a while before so as not disturb the food processing in your stomach i.e. fermentation, bloating etc. Avoid intake of high sugar (table sugar, sucrose) foods through sweets or other forms. Avoid spicy foods. • Avoid caffeine drinks such as coke, coffee or tea. Caffeine is a diuretic. Gradually reduce the intake of these drinks a few days before Ramadan. A sudden decrease in caffeine prompts headaches, mood swings and irritability. • Smoking is a health risk factor. Avoid smoking cigarettes. If you cannot give up smoking, cut down gradually starting a few weeks before Ramadan. Smoking affects utilization of various vitamins, metabolites and enzyme systems in the body. • Do not forget to brush your teeth before sleep and after Suhur. • It is recommended that everyone engage in some kind of light exercise, such as stretching or walking. • Intake of a balanced diet is critical to maintain good health, sustain an active lifestyle and attain the full benefits of Ramadan. A spa treatment to remember
For an ultimate de-stressing session, a spa trip to the Ritz Carlton Bahrain Hotel and Spa provides a hedonistic sanctuary from the daily grind of life.
T
he voyage to a more relaxed and rejuvenated self starts as soon as you enter the spa, where soothing background music immediately begins to work its magic. I was scheduled for a Swedish Massage and Vitamin-C Facial. A spa personnel leads you to the lockers, which is lined with a robe, a towel, bathroom slippers and other toiletries and asks you to change into the robe, then wait by the couch to be picked up by your personal therapist.

My therapist, Cecil, greeted me with a big smile and was the friendliest therapist ever! After signing a consent form and discussing past injuries and skin issues, she led me to a room labelled ‘Chamomile.’ It was a petite room with a warming massage bed, dim lights and a few cabinets. A light aroma of Camomile lingered in the air, which explained the name of the room. Swedish massage concentrates on the

back, shoulders, hands, legs and feet, which are parts of the body which stores stress. Cecil rubbed lavender oil on my back and massaged it in long strokes, explaining that stress from sitting long hours in front of a computer usually forms ‘knots’ in the back and shoulder region. She was working on dissolving the ‘knots.’ After working on my back, she massaged my arms and hands and then the legs, soothing the tensed muscle bunches. It was the most relaxed feeling I’ve experienced in months! Cecil then explained what the Vitamin C Facial entails. After cleansing, toning and moisturizing my face all the way to the clavicle, she would dab my face with Vitamin C extracts
and a scrub to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells. Prior to the facial, a blackhead extraction was done to clear the skin on my nose. The treatment promotes collagen and elastin formation which regenerates and maintains luminous and radiant skin. The moisturiser smelt like citrus summer fruits and then Cecil asked me to close my eyes while she applied the Vitamin C extract. My far-fetched imagination made me visualise myself in a field filled with fragrant orange and lemon trees! The extract makes the skin tingle for about a minute till it settles down and it’s the same with the scrub. The finishing is done by sealing it all in with a moisturiser. It has an oily residue which stays on the skin for
about 30 minutes and then disappears. Upon looking in the mirror, the effects were conspicuously visible. My skin was looked radiant and had a healthy under glow to it! Cecil led me to the Relaxation Room and brought me tea and almonds. I bid farewell to Cecil and thanked her for the wonderful experience. After settling into a comfortable chaise and revealing in my new found bliss, I slowly drifted into a peaceful sleep. July 2013 •

What to do:
1. Once you have all of your supplies, spread your old towel on the ground and lay out your canvas and crayons. Then, glue the crayons onto the canvas in any design that you want. Wait about 5 minutes for the glue to dry.
2. After this, plug in your blow dryer and turn in to the highest setting. Prop your canvas up and hold the blow dryer close to the crayons. Slowly move the blow dryer over all of the crayons. As they melt, the will begin to slide down the canvas creating some sort of rainbow pattern which will vary depending on how you organized your crayons.
3. Once the crayons are melted, leave the canvas propped up for about 20 minutes so that the crayon wax can continue to slide down the canvas and dry. When this is done, you’ll have a funky new item to decorate your space with.
The most important thing to remember is that you can always stray from these instructions and make this project your own. A few examples are shown on the page. Don’t limit your creativity!

There is a bracket to hold it in place but still, don’t let your robot vacuum cleaner near it.

A thermostatic valve system allows for the addition and removal of liquid so the dome is always totally – but not overly – full. I visited Primavera for lunch. My lunch partner and I chose a seat with a stunning view of the pool side and gardens. The interiors are elegant and chic, with a large, separate dining area for big groups as well. A striking feature of the separate dining hall is that the walls are covered with real, velvety green moss. It lends a very fresh element to the private space
For main course, we had cut of beef tenderloin with rocket leaves, Porcini mushrooms and parmesan shavings. The beef was the tenderest meat you could ever sink your teeth into. The mushrooms and rocket were great with the steak.
For desert, we were given a selection of heavenly sweet treats including home-made vanilla ice cream with Amerena cherry, three flavours of crème brulee and Tiramisu. Each had a distinct flavour, neither too sweet nor too bland.
All the presentations of the dishes was impeccable!
What a happy ending! It was the perfect end to a delicious lunch!
Although there is a fairly sumptuous menu, the restaurant manager suggested that we try the dish of the day – Caprese salad with Buffalo Mozzarella and Cherry Tomatoes and Bresaolo, which is air-dried salted beef. The Caprese Salad was a fitting combination of scrummy and tangy and Buffalo Mozzarella is one of my personal favourites in any salad. The Breasolo was delicious! We also learnt of walls on either sides filled with Wines from different parts of the world, perhaps on the largest collection of wines in Bahrain. July 2013 •

Of the millions of Japanese cars produced in the past half-century, most are memorable only through their sheer numbers. A small group, however including the Nissan Z have achieved true affordable sports car icon status. A sports car lauded for its high performance and strong value, the Nissan Z proved that Japan could make more than just fuel-sipping econoboxes. The Nissan 370Z, representing the Z’s sixth generation, continues this tradition. 72 •

1. EXTERIORS Even the best retro design needs updating eventually. The front and rear aprons are low and aggressive, the exhaust pipes are big and the wing looks custom. It almost looks too much like a tuner actually. From 20 feet away, you can’t tell if the kit came from a Japanese factory or your local Autozone. The most obvious update is the relocation of the car’s “fangs” from the grille to the outside edges of the front bumper; the vestigial teeth are now rendered as a pair of vertical LED daytime running lights rather than in body-color plastic. On the rear bumper, a red reflector has replaced the small piece of black plastic that was used in place of fog lamp. 2. INTERIORS The driver’s seat is well bolstered and models with leather upholstery have suedelike seat centres to stop you sliding around during hard cornering. The clarity of the instruments themselves is impressive, with a large trip computer screen appearing on the
AUTOMOBILE far left of the display and a big rev counter in the centre. The instrument dials also move in unison with the steering wheel, ensuring a clear line of sight. The 370Z is strictly a two-seater, but there’s plenty of head- and legroom. Less impressive is the amount of luggage room on offer and the way that the boot’s cargo remains partially on display, despite the fitment of a tonneau cover. The boot itself is unusually shallow and impaired by a big suspension brace. 3. PERFORMANCE The 370Z certainly lives up to its looks, thanks to a 324 hp and 270 pound feet torque 3.7-litre V6 engine driving the rear wheels. It blasts from 0-60mph in less than 5.5 seconds. It has a seven-speed automatic with shift paddles on the steering wheel and the SynchroRev Match manual transmission. The latter automatically blips the throttle during downshifts to deliver smoother, quicker shifts with better dynamic control of the chassis, which not only maximizes performance but also makes you sound like a certified pro driver. 4. RIDE AND HANDLING The 370Z provides all the thrills and most of the dynamic ability you could possibly want. The standard sport-tuned suspension delivers excellent handling and a surprisingly smooth ride. Regardless, we’ve noticed it suffers from pervasive road noise that severely limits the Z’s appeal as a road trip car. A viscous limited-slip differential helps with getting power to the road and a front chin deflector and rear spoiler augment the aerodynamics at speed. The 370Z’s heavy steering feels just a bit numb and didn’t communicate very much to me through my fingertips, but it is definitely responsive and direct. The 370Z turns into bends sharply, has strong grip and meaty, communicative steering which inspires confidence. 5. SAFETY Every 2013 Nissan 370Z comes standard with antilock brakes, traction and stability control and side airbags. Front, side and curtain airbags, as well as active antiwhiplash head restraints, are on hand in case a collision is unavoidable. On the security front, deadlocks, locking wheelnuts and an alarm make life difficult for thieves. The 370Z’s athletic handling and strong brakes continue to earn high marks. 6. EQUIPMENT Standard features include 18-inch wheels, automatic bi-xenon headlights, LED running lights, heated mirrors, keyless entry, cruise control, automatic climate
control, a rearview camera, ventilated seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, bose sound system, an iPod/USB audio interface, bluetooth connectivity and sat-nav system. The 2013 Z is available as a hatchback coupe or soft-top convertible. Both the base and Touring trims are available with a Sport package, which adds a limited-slip differential, 19-inch forged alloy wheels, upgraded brakes, suspension dampers, SynchroRev Match manual transmission, a rear spoiler and a front chin spoiler. The Nismo 370Z coupe gets a more powerful V6 along with the same or upgraded versions of the Sport package items.
VERDICT The 370Z stands out thanks to its powerful engine and agile handling bringing out a thrilling performance combined with sculpted styling and surprisingly comfortable cabin. The Z in all of its incarnations, has always provided an unusually large hit of performance for the money. There are some downsides such as the luggage space and the abundance of road noise but the 370Z it is certainly one of the most exciting two-seat sports cars around and a fitting progression of the Z’s heritage. On this occasion, the Bahrain Motorcycle Club riders were invited to the new bike service facility at the Bridgestone Service Centre. The facility has a special bay with advanced technologies for bike service and tyre fitting. Mr Shambil Basit -Head of Retail, Tires & Allied Business Division, AJM Kooheji Group took the BMC riders through a walkthrough of the facility and showed the riders the various services the Bridgestone Service Centre has to offer. THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD ISSUES WHITE PAPER ON WOMEN’S ROLE IN BAHRAIN’S ECONOMY The Economic Development Board (EDB) issued a research paper, titled “The Role of Bahraini Women in the Economy”, which provides detailed statistics on women’s participation in the workforce, recruitment into the private sector, unemployment among women, female entrepreneurship, education and related legislation. The report also highlighted programmes run by Tamkeen as well as the different aspects of social life in the Kingdom, anticipating an increase in women’s participation in the economy by 5 percent to reach 45.6% in 2020 from its current level. The paper also indicated that the number of women joining the private sector has increased by 73.5% in 2010 to more than 25,000 as compared to 2002. This increment is higher than the rate of women recruitment in the public sector which stood at 45%. Despite all efforts being made to increase women’s participation in the private sector, women still represent only 5-6% of the overall work force in this sector. However, the difference between the average wage for men and women in the private sector still stands at 30%, in contrast to the public sector where women receive on average 10% higher wages than men. Sectors such as education and health are still considered the preferred sectors for women to work in, even though the number of women working in the manufacturing, trade and financial sectors has noticeably increased. What does reality mean? Is it merely the state of all phenomena as they are? Or is it a choice? Our definition of reality flickers like a candle in a rainstorm. What may be held with utmost belief as real now may not be so a moment or two later, for with each passing moment we are subjected to new experiences, resulting in newer beliefs and an altered perception. Just as we have our own lives, our own experiences and attitudes towards them, its only right to say that each of us have our own realities. And regardless of how shaped this image is by exterior forces, be it your past or your current experiences, reality lies in the palm of your hands. Literally, thanks to the concept of augmented reality. The reason why we fell in love with computer animation was because it provided an easy tool to change our perceptions. Animation allowed us to defy physics, alter time and space, and create worlds of indefinable beauty. And the child within us had always wishes to co-exist with such a world: a limitless world devoid of mental or physical restrictions. Consider augmented reality a gateway between these worlds. To augment means to project, or to amplify. AR allows its user to layer computer generated graphics onto real life objects in real time. Simply put, it blurs the line between your perception of reality and 3D graphics. What makes AR the next big thing in the world of media and advertisement is the simple fact that it allows you to change your definition of reality to whatever you wish to change it to; be it exploring your dream car interiors through a magazine, or watching your favourite singer sing through the pages of a newspaper. Nothing grabs the attention of a fellow human being more than giving him an experience unique only to himself, and giving him an option to alter his reality to something he has never seen or experienced before. In conclusion, I’d say that AR is the manifestation of how the human mind really works. You see only what you choose to see. Like happiness and sorrow, reality is but a choice. The question is, which one would you choose to live today? 98 •
