She took time out to speak with Sabaya about her experiences, , and why its time to be known in our exclusive interview. 12

JULY 2014

Success Story How did you develop an interest in disc jockeying? I have always had a keen interest in music. I was always playing my dad’s Walkman when i was a kid. I listened to Madonna and The Pet Shop Boys over and over. Also my parents had a turntable on the sound system. So I was always playing with records and was intrigued by how they worked with the needle and the groove. I bought my first record when I was about 11 or 12. It was a Bruce Springsteen picture disc! Then when I was in my late teens, I started listening to dance music and used to sit in school and draw myself DJ’ing in nightclubs, with my friends as dancers. I would also record dance music shows off the radio onto cassettes, then edit them. Then finally when I was 22, I was managing a bar and there were some turntables. The DJ there gave me about 15 12” records and told me to practice. So I did for many hours a day when the bar was closed... and that’s where it started. Tell me a little about yourself. I am 34 years of age. I am British, but was born in Cyprus, as my dad was in the military. I have played in the UK, Ireland, Spain,Ibiza, Poland, Doha, Egypt and Bahrain. I was a resident for Hed Kandi and Ministry of Sound for three years. I am also a qualified windsurfing instructor, and also love to sail, surf and kite surf. I am passionate about animal rights and human rights. And try and use my music to bring love and positivity into the world. I can speak Arabic, some French and German. I have lived in many different places, and have basically been travelling for 15 years. Now I am in Bahrain- which I love. I love the colour turquoise and people that make me laugh. I also love dancing! What genre of music do you produce/play? I started off playing vocal, funky house in 2002. I now play deep, tech and classic vocal house. Since being in Bahrain I have also been introduced to psy trance, which I might play on special occasions. I am yet to produce, but it is something that is on my ‘to do’ list. What plans do you have in store for Bahrain? I am planning on bringing fresh energy- a genuine passion for music, funk, soul and FUN through the music. Also I will be bringing international

DJs and producers to the venues I will be working with-small and large events. What brought you here? I came here in 2011 and played at Cocoon Lounge. I was meant to come here as a resident then, but then the revolution happened, and I went to Doha instead. Then last October I was invited to play at the BMC festival. That’s when I fell in love with the island again. Then a job was offered to me, as I had worked for someone in Doha, and they wanted to bring me here. So I was taken on as resident at Ruka lounge in Ramee Grand in Seef. Who inspires you? Musicians and Djs with a burning passion for music, that do it for the love of the performance and reaction and not the money. Also people who stand up for what they believe in, and never lose focus of their dreams. How do you unwind after a long day? I love to draw and paint and make things... I love the sea- so relaxing at the beach. I also meditate, and try and do yoga. What message do you have for aspiring DJs? Stay true to yourself. Follow your heart. Don’t be afraid to be different from everyone else, and play the music YOU love, for that is how you express yourself truly. What are your future career plans? Currently-To stay in Bahrain, doing local events and gigs internationally. There are some great events lined up with great venues. Long term goals are to keep travelling, and one day have a family, and own a small restaurant. What according to you is the recipe for a perfect tune? Music affects us all differently. For a tune to be perfect for me. It has to have emotion, instruments, great lyrics, an awesome groove and great bass line. A couple of my favorite house tracks are Deux-Sun rising up and Hercules and the love affair- Blind(Frankie Knuckles remix). A perfect tune for a club usually has big break that can build up and play with your emotions, and lots of energy and an awesome bass line. Ramadan Special

Tips For A Healthy Lifestyle During Ramadan And Throughout The Year

A

healthy diet is crucial during Ramadan and throughout the year; keep it balanced and avoid fried and sugar-filled foods. During Ramadan, iftar is the star. It is considered as a reward after a long day of fasting. Iftar fulfils more than 55 per cent of the body’s nutrition needs and balances the sugar levels in the blood and brain. It is recommended to have your iftar over two phases: start with dates, soup and salad, do the prayers and then have your main course. Exercise is very important during Ramadan. Try to take moderate exercise, like a brisk walk, each evening before breaking fast, and keep this up throughout the year, at least 5 days per week Fluid replenishment should be a priority. Drink plenty of water, avoiding sugar-filled drinks. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water after iftar and throughout the night to ensure proper hydration and to avoid dehydration symptoms. Other food items

14

JULY 2014

that also contribute to fluid intake are soup, juice, yogurt and coffee in moderation Watch your weight to avoid rapid weight gain during the Holy Month, and look to maintain a normal body weight through the year by adopting a healthy lifestyle

Tips for iftar meal:

Break your fast with a date. Dates balance the blood sugar levels and contain beneficial minerals and fibre. Remember moderation, have up to three dates and don’t overeat! Soups are a very important part of the iftar table. They are warm and easy on the stomach and provide the body with some fluids and minerals. They are a healthy start to your iftar meal. Remember to include salads at every iftar. Fresh vegetables contain fibres which are an essential part of the diet during Ramadan to avoid constipation and maintain a healthy digestive system. Be creative! Prepare salads which are rich in vegetables of different colours. The more colour the

more beneficial vitamins and minerals. Try to avoid fried. Instead, prepare baked pastries or steamed vegetables Remember your balanced plate split. Fill ¼ with carbohydrates, ¼ with proteins, and the remaining half with veggies. This way you can fulfil all your nutritional needs in a balanced and healthy way. Desserts should be consumed in moderation. With each iftar, serve only one dessert choice and keep your portion of sweet not more than three fingers in size. You can have fresh or dried fruits and nuts instead of dessert to satisfy your sweet cravings. Another important meal in Ramadan is Suhoor. It provides the body with its requirements of sugar and energy before a long day of fasting and it is a supplementary meal after iftar that provides the body with even more nutrients. A well-balanced Suhoor that provides the right nutrients can reduce the effects of fasting such as laziness, headaches, fatigue, hunger and discomfort.

Ramadan Special

An example of a well-balanced suhoor:

A glass of low fat milk with cereals or a piece of brown bread with low fat cheese or boiled egg. A piece of fruit like banana, apple , dates or watermelon

What about coffee?

You can continue to enjoy your coffee over the Holy month. Gradually adjust your sipping patterns: If you are a regular coffee drinker and you drink 4 cups of coffee per day, begin by switching 1 out of your 4 cups to decaffeinated coffee two weeks before Ramadan, and then eventually shift to two decaffeinated cups and two regular coffees a few days before Ramadan.

General tips:

• If you suffer from constipation while fasting: Have enough fluids and foods rich in fibre • If you suffer from heartburn after iftar: Avoid fried foods and high fat foods • If you suffer from gastric ulcers: Avoid spices, coffee, carbonated beverages and fried foods • If you suffer from continuous hunger: Have foods which are slowly absorbed such as foods rich in fibres • If you suffer from fullness or gastrointestinal discomfort after eating: Chew your food very well and allow enough time for your meal, and don’t overeat! cleansing - spiritual and physical - not about indulgence.

Tip from Suhail Algosaibi

First of all, keep exercising. Some people prefer to workout before Iftar, while others prefer after. It really depends on you. If you workout before Iftar then make sure it’s about an hour or so before. Don’t workout in the morning, otherwise you risk dehydrating yourself during the rest of the day. If you workout, make sure to have a light Iftar and wait an hour to two hours after. Also, I would not recommend training with the same intensity you do during the rest of the year. At the end of the day however, you know your body best, and have to decide what the best thing for you is. I break my fast with a green juice made of raw blended vegetables, which is a great way to replenish your body after fasting. I have this with some dates, followed by a very light meal. You might consider doing the same. Finally, the most important advice I can give is to start Ramadan healthy, and not overeat or indulge in desserts. If you start right you’ll be able to maintain it for the rest of the Holy Month. However, if you have the lovely sweets and desserts from Day One, you’ll have a very hard time stopping, and by the end of the month you’ll have gained a lot of weight, and feel miserable. Remember the Holy Month is about cleansing spiritual and physical - not about indulgence. JULY 2014

Art-Spect

Designs Factory By Farhat Shaukat

16

JULY 2014

Faisal Ismail is the Creative Director of Designs Factory – a newly established furniture company that is unique, different and unlike anything else available in the Bahraini market… until now. He is an ambitious and talented man with the desire to add a touch of something quirky and fresh into peoples homes in Bahrain. Here, he tells us more about what fuels his ambition and keeps him inspired. What inspired you to create design factory? I was always very keen and interested in pop art. I appreciate things that are very different, luxurious and interesting – things that are daring and that have a twist and so the concept of Design Factory came to life. I wanted to do something and create a concept that would add an exciting and positive touch to everyone’s home or place of living. What is your core artistic inspiration for the work that you create? A good life. Like you’ve mentioned your like for unique and different things. Considering the traditional and more conservative culture likings of the people here in this region, how has the response been toward your art by them? So far, it has been quite good. We had anticipated that majority of the interest would come from abroad but we have been fortunate to have a lot of our pieces enter Bahraini homes. Bahraini’s have come to appreciate this. Do you plan on branching out? Inshallah, in the future. Right now just this one in Bahrain. What advice would you give to aspiring artists out there and especially from this region who want to do something different like yourself? If you put your heart to something and really remain determined, you will do it. You just need to have the right team. Don’t look at others, just look at your potential and never compare yourself to anyone else. Passion: retail Communicating with people Traveling

Who primarily designs the furniture? I am the creative director and I also have a very creative and talented team that work with me so we work hand in hand. I come up with the ideas and we start from there. What are your future plans? Ambition has no limit. As we go along, plans evolve and dreams come to life. The beautiful thing about ambition is that is constantly evolves. The moment you say, “yes I’ve made it, I’ve done it, I’m successful” – this is a very inappropriate moment because it is a turning point. The sky is the limit. I’m not in rush and im very picky and since I’ve created such a unique concept, I need an appropriate retailing partner for it – someone who can help it grow – someone who understands this business and what it needs. How often do you plan to come up with new designs for design factory? Every few weeks actually. - that’s quick!..things sell. We don’t like repetition at design factory. There is a story line – if we were to launch new products from the story line, they would not be items that would have previously existed. They would be different items from the same story line so to prevent repetition. We do take custom orders, however. Customers have come to us with their own requests and we have customized products for them and so far, they are very happy with it and we have got referred a number of times. You mentioned that most of your production is done in Bahrain… Did that prove to be an obstacle at any given moment? The prints and materials are handled in France, because the obstacle in Bahrain was to find the appropriate printers and textile manufacturers and those facilities aren’t developed enough here yet. It has been an obstacle to an extent but luckily enough as a communication and a concept agency, we have the

facilities to acquire what is necessary for manufacturing the product and me being a retailer, I have manufactured stores and some impressive fit outs have been created by us. So we have a background for it. And what ever is created here at design factory is of the highest quality. So because of the knowledge you have of the industry, it didn’t take too long to get comfortable? Of course, as you go along, you learn further. We have the knowledge but when you venture into this, despite our referrals to professionals in the industry and all the advice you got from people who know this better than we do, we still had to evolve our thought process, thinking and decision making in regards to the production line to get things right.

A Class Apart

Suhail Algosaibi B

itten by the entrepreneurial bug, Suhail Algosaibi is a renowned fitness expert with a passion for helping others. Following fitness as a lifestyle, Suhail is the founder of DreamBody Centre, which promises to get people in shape within a few minutes every day. He tells us more about his passions, his future plans and more in a cndid chat with Sabaya magazine. Tell me a little about yourself. I’m a father, a husband, a son.

How did you get interested in fitness and self development? As for self-development, I started reading self-development books in the early 2000’s, this was followed by listening to 18

JULY 2014

audio programmes, watching DVD’s and attending seminars. The most important thing was that I implemented what I learnt. I eventually started writing and speaking about self-development. I think personal growth and lifetime learning are essential for the ambitious person. If you have big dreams and goals you must read, listen to, and watch selfdevelopment material. I’d say that most successful people do that.

What is your perception of the entrepreneurial scene in Bahrain? I think it’s great that we have a startup scene developing in Bahrain. We don’t have a mature ecosystem yet, but we’re getting there. The biggest challenge for startup entrepreneurs is government bureaucracy, which has not caught up with the times. But

I hope that it’s just a matter of time until things improve. What are you passionate about? I’m passionate about helping others, and the more I can do so with a profit, the better. This does not mean I’m selfish or greedy. I’m a firm believer in win-win. At the DreamBody Centre (DBC) for example, we are passionate about helping people lose weight and get in shape, and in return we charge a membership fee. That way everyone wins. I’m also passionate about entrepreneurship. I love being an entrepreneur. I think being an entrepreneur is the most enjoyable and most glamorous job in the world. I always have a few startup entrepreneurs that I’m mentoring. I really enjoy helping young entrepreneurs develop

A Class Apart themselves and their businesses. Finally, I’m passionate about helping our beloved country heal from the crisis. I came to Bahrain when I was 12 years old as a guest. This country has given me so much, and today, as a citizen, I try to give back by promoting tolerance and civil dialogue through the Bahrain Foundation for Reconciliation and Civil Discourse. What do you do to relax after a long day? It can vary. Some days I like to just sit in front of the TV and veg out. Other days it might be exercising, swimming or meditating. I also enjoy going to the cinema. I also really enjoy spending time with the family. What message can you give to the youth of Bahrain? Keep hope alive! Can you give our readers a few tips on staying fit during Ramadan? Absolutely. First of all, keep exercising. Some people prefer to workout before Iftar, while others prefer after. It really depends on you. If you workout before Iftar then make sure it’s about an hour or so before. Don’t workout in the morning, otherwise you risk dehydrating yourself during the rest of the day. However, if you have the lovely sweets and desserts from Day One, you’ll have a very hard time stopping, and by the end of the month you’ll have gained a lot of weight, and feel miserable. Remember the Holy Month is about cleansing - spiritual and physical - not about indulgence. How did you go about publishing your book on self defence? How has the response been? The book was written out of a desire to help people in Bahrain learn how to defend themselves. It has very basic instructions and techniques that are easy to implement. The response has been great and the book launch was covered in all the media and on Bahrain TV. I’m now working on my next book, which is on entrepreneurship.

and when she looks int he mirror she says “wow!” Many have also told us that their husbands are more attracted to them because of their new body shape. It gives us a lot of satisfaction when we hear feedback like this. It makes us really happy. But you don’t have to take my word for it, we have lots of success stories at DreamBodyTV.com. What are your future plans in terms of your career? My top priority is to start franchising the DBC. We plan to open 529 locations in the next decade, so we have a lot of work ahead of us. In the meantime I’ll keep mentoring entrepreneurs, and perhaps invest in some of the startups. Eventually I want to establish a startup investment firm. I guess I’ll start another couple of businesses, and of course I’ll continue to help Bahrain as best as I can. I also plan to write a few more books. Basically, I’ll keep doing what I’m doing right now!

How has the Dreambody Centre (DBC) helped transform people’s lives? Can you tell us a few success stories? We have countless stories. I suggest readers go to our online TV channel at DreamBodyTV.com to see the stories for themselves. It’s amazing how people’s lives get transformed when they lose weight. One lady told us that she stopped using her inhaler because of the DBC. Another proudly told us that she lost 18 Kg and can now fit into teenagers clothes! Deborah Ann Woll

The actress wore a Carolina Herrera gold lame jacquard strapless dress, which may not be seasonal for some but there is no denying that the earthy tones enhance that gorgeous flame hair colour. Styling the look with gold Christian Louboutin sandals and jewels from Dana Rebecca and EF Collection, the look was complete with purple smoky eyes that really made those baby blues pop.

Jennifer Morrison

She was a vision of loveliness wearing a Romona Keveza nude rose silk tulle gown with a sheer halter neckline and waltzlength skirt layered over a narrow short underskirt. Her dress is divine, as are her hair and makeup, but the clutch doesn’t complement the dress too well, and I would’ve loved this look more if the waistband wasn’t embellished.

Glitz & Glam Michelle Monaghan

She opted not to wear a gown, donning an two-tone, white and cobalt blue peplum top and skinny trousers from Antonio Berardi’s Pre-Fall 2014 collection. The sleek look was styled with white Louboutin pumps, Irene Neuwirth jewels and a blue Ferragamo clutch. Sexy blown-out tresses and a striking red lip completed her look, which was certainly a hop, step and a jump away from what was expected.

Laura Vandervoort She attended Maxim’s Hot 100 Women of 2014 celebration in West Hollywood, California. At this event you expect to see a bit of skin, and Laura did that tastefully wearing a bright red Alice + Olivia mock-neck crop top and high-waist pencil skirt with a side slit from the Fall 2014 collection. Working a voluminous updo and highlighting her eyes with heavy eyeliner, the look was styled with nude pumps, a Rauwolf clutch and a selection of silver rings. Sexy in a chic way? Yep, I think she totally nailed this look.

Carrie Underwood

Carrie wore a Rubin Singer Fall 2014 black and silver chevronprint cocktail dress with an asymmetrical neckline. Her bold print frock was styled with Jacob & Co. jewels including chandelier earrings, Henri Lepore ‘Carmela’ black T-strap pumps and a metallic clutch. I’m not a huge fan of the pointy pumps, but she made the look work. JULY 2014

Glitz & Glam Jennifer Lopez

J.Lo dawned a black and gold look, wearing an Emanuel Ungaro Spring 2014 leather and gold perforated two-piece consisting of a patchpocket top and a mini skirt. Even with the perforated details, I’m sweltering at the thought of wearing this look on a sunny day. The diva styled the look with chic shades, Christian Louboutin buckle pumps and a Giuseppe Zanotti black bag with gold hardware. Was she trying just a little too hard, or is this classic JLo?

Mindy Kaling

The actress donned a fun Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring 2014 long-sleeved shift dress featuring the brand’s signature ‘Radio Waves’ print for the season. This is what I call a marmite dress, as some might love its flirty, playful appeal, while some might find the optical print really jarring. I’m on the fence because I love it but if I look at it for too long the print will give me googly eyes.

The Asian beauty served up some architectural brilliance courtesy of Stephane Rolland. Her Spring 2014 Couture gown with an ivory capsleeve top featuring embroidery which trickles down to the black sheer panelled skirt was a refreshing change of pace. This could’ve easily been a safe princess embellished gown for a premiere on her home turf, but she opted to go left and it paid off. A pretty pink lip, a gold Jimmy Choo clutch and nude ankle strap peep-toes, which I am slightly indifferent about, completed her BDOTY worthy look. JULY 2014

tacey Bendet’s Fall 2014 collection for alice + olivia is, “Enchanted: A Midwinter Night’s Dream”. Sharp tailoring combines with vintage Victorian charm and bohemian beauty, creating a free-spirited decadence. Suffused with luxe modernity, the collection features bold brocades, rich velvet, regal lace and opulent metallics, mixed with monarch butterfly motifs. Dreamy prints on tapestry fabrics are adorned with fine filigree amid jewel-toned blue, green and “royal red”. Metallic is the new black, while camel, cream and chocolate serve as a rich neutral base. Romantic collars, lace blouse details, ruffled sleeves and chokers are paired with ultra-miniskirts, slouchy menswear-inspired pants and the new fitted denim trouser - a juxtaposition of the past and the present. Fall 2014 introduces several strong silhouettes including the winter short, tailored flair back jacket, crop jacket and statement coat. Novelty knits add fanciful appeal, and blanket knit coats make for cozy toppers over whimsical printed dresses. Fall 2014 accessories feature the NYC boot and pump with signature red tread, and novelty bags including the “Owl bag”, “Bear bag” and “Bride clutch”. Long zippers add edge to thigh high boots, while Victorian-inspired belts and chokers accent RTW looks. All-over crystal embellishment, velvet, fur and caviar beading appear throughout for a touch of luxury. The eye-catching Makayla shoe in mirror marble leather and beaded lace-up ankle booties provide a perfect counterpoint to the more romantic collection offerings. Stacey Bendet says of the collection, “This season is about sexiness and fantasy - luxury and decadence in a wearable way.”

Dsquared2 Women’s FW 2014 show Once a glamorous star, she finds herself in an institution with her wardrobe of magnificent things. Despite her dizzying mental state she is always dressed to the hilt. Perturbed and wonderful, Dsquared2 takes inspiration from this striking woman for the autumn winter 2014 collection. Dramatic femininity is underscored with iconic 60s shapes of swingy jackets, short shift dresses, capes and cropped pants. Rich textures are found in mink inserts, python skins, feathers, paillettes and jewels, all symbols of her dazzling former life. Decadent eveningwear has couture constructions: a narrow long sheath has a cape back, an emerald floorlength cape is covered with long black feathers, and a glistening matte gold and cream gown’s fluted bust is trimmed with a crystal bow at the waist. Daywear is infused with lashings of drama and opulence. Evoking the structured lines of a classic nurse’s uniform, bonded white leather and stretch inserts are second-skin like mini dresses worn with double-breasted capes. A felted wool tunic is inlaid with avocado hued mink. Jacquard silk pants with a shimmering lurex pattern are paired with a white fur top. Dense threedimensional pailettes and jewels encrust mini shift dresses and matching jackets. Sumptuous furs are paired with nude silk lingerie and pajamas. Detailed construction in a meshed silk nude mini corseted dress recalls an orthopedic garment. Emerald and teal glossy python skins are cut into long-sleeved short tunic and a cropped jacket with matching python pumps, hats and bags. Brace like mesh and leather ankle straps accent sandals, revealing the same stiletto spiked heel as softly roundedtoe pumps. Another pump style with a squared toe, doctor bags and rectangle clutches are embellished with mink, plumage or jewels. A mini clutch with handles is encased in scaffolding-like metal. Felted round high hats with narrow brims are trimmed in fur. Bracelets and neck cuffs are also styled like braces; other arm cuffs are loaded with jewels and connected to finger rings shimmering with stones. Oversized Jackie O style sunglasses come with clip-on jewelry over the brow, or sides and temples. Their sparkle gives off a kaleidoscope of fragmented lights, the flash before her release back into everyday life, where the episode could have easily been a dream.

#madlock Dsquared2 Men’s F/W 2014 ]He’s a bad boy and it’s time to pay his dues. On the inside, confusion ruled by discipline with a glimpse into insanity. It’s a thug’s life, be tough, stay on the straight and narrow until parole. Through the mad eyes of this bad boy, Dsquared2 takes inspiration for its fall winter 2014 collection from the unique world of a correctional institute. The unconventional influence lends motifs, colors and attire of life behind bars, via the uniforms of the inmates and those who patronize them: prison guards, psychiatrists, priests and lawyers. The style story that unfolds begins with a simple cotton tunic and pants – mandatory clothes of someone being committed. Intense prison orange – the hue that makes escape difficult — quilted nylon teamed with worsted wool jackets fitted with zippers that converts into a new “pieces”. Dsquared2’s DNA, mastery in denim and leather, are key to the hard knock life looks. Shades of indigo and black denim are given bleached out, destroyed and ripped treatments, cut into a jumpsuit, or straightjacket-style jackets, some trimmed with buckles, and paired with curved baggy jeans. On the inside, clothes are a size too big. Taking cue from this look, the silhouette is bigger, but reinforced with structure through heavy masculine fabrics. Doublefaced felted wools make sleek unlined patch pocket coats. Jean jackets are bonded with felted wool. Raw cut black and white long leather jackets take on a rounded fullness with spongy jersey bonded interiors. Leather and denim are patchwork accents on classic wool suiting, in sleeves, front panels and waistbands. Rough boy denim is mixed with elegant pieces, a brushed wool teddy bear tobacco car coat, another long coat in graphic

panels of Bordeaux, white and black silk and wool, and cashmere knits. Rigid shapes crafted from black and distressed gray leather, the doctors style bags are matched with thick black squared eyeglasses of the institution’s psychoanalysts. Ankle boots are heavy duty style signatures of the inmates and their guards. With rounded toes in black, ochre and prison yellow leather and layered leather or rubber soles. Knitted short tuque hats add a tough guy attitude.

The sense of sight was touched upon by presenting the Rose collection and related displays. Adorning the boutiques with Piaget Rose candles and offering a single Piaget Rose to each and every visitor ensured that the sense of smell was roused. The taste buds were teased in the form of delectable pink macaroons and cupcakes while visitors were allowed to try out the Rose Jewels thereby getting to touch them. Piaget Celebrates Rose Day at the Château de Malmaison A Patron of the Arts for the Love of Roses Piaget Rose Day celebrates the day on which one of the world’s most beautiful roses was christened the “Yves Piaget Rose,” thus becoming a major source of inspiration for the house’s jewellery collections. For this year’s Piaget Rose Day, Piaget wrote a new chapter in the history of one of France’s most celebrated women, the Empress Josephine, and her fabled rose garden. On June 5th, 2014, Piaget inaugurated the completely restored garden of old roses at the Château de Malmaison. Thanks to generous support from the Swiss jeweller, the legendary garden has been meticulously refurbished, along with two of Empress Josephine’s richly embroidered imperial garments. The effort highlights a shared passion for roses and affirms Piaget’s commitment as a patron of the arts and gardens. Heavenly Havana If you’re contemplating planning a vacation to Havana, it’s safe to say you’re not looking for a long list of architectural and historical sites to visit, but rather a guide to the most intrinsically Cuban experiences to be had. Havana, a city of 2.2 million on Cuba’s northwest coast, is the island’s political, cultural and industrial capital. The weathered buildings in Habana Vieja and classic U.S. cars seem like a time warp.

M

ake the best of your Havana visit and savour the city from all angles, but be warned: Havana is not a city of half measures. Whatever it is you want to do here, you’d better be prepared to do it with all your heart and soul: seek it, put up with the annoyances, and relish the whole experience for life.We are leading you there with the top 9 things to do. 1. Get in with the locals It’s just about impossible to enjoy even 5 minutes in Havana without striking up a conversation with a local Habanero. Whilst some tourists seem fearful of uninvited contact, we’re here to tell you that while a few will no doubt be sussing out your gullibility, the majority are actually just curious to know about you and the country you’re from. Choosing to stay in a casa particular (private home stay) as opposed to a hotel will certainly help you get into the midst of Cuban family life effortlessly; yet staying in a hotel will not necessarily make you immune to a little local interaction. Step out the front door and you’ll be approached by more people than you could ever imagine; if you’re able to discern the good from the dodgy, and make a local ‘friend’ for the duration of your stay, you may well end up having the holiday of your life and be privy to a side of Havana most ‘package tourists’ never get to see. 2. Get lost in old Havana Soaking up the atmosphere in La Habana Vieja is the epitome Havana experience. The UNESCO heritage listed centre is home to some of the most stunning colonial architectural treasures in both Americas, spanning an incredible five centuries; yet it’s the sights and sounds of the street-life within its borders which seems to endure in most people’s memory. The whole centre is going through a swift gentrification and, while most of the ‘tourist trail’ buildings have been restored to a tee, there are still plenty of hidden corners which the hand of modernity has not yet reached. Old Havana highlights include Plaza de Armas (the birthplace of the city), Plaza de la Catedral(home to the superbly restored baroque-style cathedral) and Plaza Vieja, where you’ll find La Fabrica, the very best

40

JULY 2014

micro-brewery in town. Relish in the local street food, talented performers and Cuban tunes wafting from every corner bar, and you’ll have yourself a Havana experience par excellence. 3. Catch a sunset at the El Morro Fortress Built by the Spanish in the 16th century to protect Havana from invading navies, the El Morro Castle is one of the most iconic and visible sites in the whole city. Situated at the very entrance to the bay, right across from the Old Town waterfront, the El Morro Fortress is a splendid spot from where to enjoy an absolutely breathtaking sunset in Havana, as well as being a spellbinding historic attraction in its own right. 4. Join a cigar factory tour There’s a hell of a lot more to Cuba than salsa, rum and cigars, yet coming here and not touring a tobacco factory is pure travesty! The most important thing to remember, when planning to do anything in Havana, is to understand that rules and availability are a rather fickle lot here, so organizing anything before arriving could result in a rather expensive disappointment. Instead, do your utmost to scour for a cigar factory open to the public when you first arrive and jump at the chance to glimpse into one of the most intrinsic aspects of Cuban culture. 5. Take a stroll along El Malecon The world is full of splendid seaside

walkways, we know, yet we’d be hard pressed to name one which is more entertaining and eclectic than Havana’s El Malecon. Cubans are a fun and friendly lot and never is this more evident (and in your face) as when you take a stroll along Havana’s beloved walled seafront. Watch local fishermen haul in their catch of the day, children frolic in the small rock pools and don’t miss heading here at night, when Havana’s young and old converge here to dance, drink and party, oftentimes dragging innocent passersby along for the ride. Be a real Habanero and join in! 6. Indulge in a world-famous Coppelia Ice Cream Havana is home to one of the largest ice cream shops in the world and, while you may now think Coppelia is famous for its equally large choice of flavours, you may be in for a little surprise. This iconic spot, decked out in authentic 1950s style, was the brainchild of Fidel Castro, who loved ice cream so much he was determined to get all Cubans addicted. Of course, this being Cuba and all, it also means that if you manage to have more than two flavours to choose at any given time then consider yourself lucky! 7. Splurge on a dinner and cabaret night at Tropicana Tropicana is Havana’s most famous cabaret theatre and although nowadays it is patronized only by tourists (entry price is equivalent to four months’ wages for locals) it is nonetheless one of the Cuban capital’s most authentic and memorable experiences. This place has been vowing audiences since the 1940’s, when filthy rich gangsters were the norm in town and, although this side of Havana may be a thing of the past, the explosive and captivating Cuban cabaret show at Tropicana has remained as enthralling and enlivening as ever. 8. Indulge in Cuban cuisine Had you travelled to Cuba ten years ago you may not necessarily have rated the country as one offering a diverse and satisfying epicurean experiences. Aside the ubiquitous rice, beans and salad combo one could find in all state-run restaurants, the best chance you had of scoring an authentic and delicious meal was if you’d managed to score a great home stay. Nowadays, thanks to the recent increase in private enterprise, Havana is simply brimming with local family restaurants (called paladars) which offer fantastic, cheap and totally delicious authentic Cuban fare. 9. Get your dancing shoes on! If you thought we could write a whole Havana guide without mentioning dancing, then we’re awfully sorry to disappoint. Just ain’t gonna happen. Yes we know, it can be incredibly intimidating taking to the dance floor in a

Travel

country where even the youngest nappywearing tots can shake their booty so well they’d put Ricky Martin to shame, but making it all the way to Cuba and not taking part in a little salsa, meringue, cha-cha or bachata session is just not on! Head to Chevere Salsa Club, the hottest dance joint in Havana and take advantage of free salsa classes before hitting the dance floor with locals and tourists alike. Fun, sociable and incredibly addictive, dancing your nights away in Havana is by far one of the most memorable experiences you’ll ever have. Head here any night for great live music, a fantastic bunch of professional dancers to help you along and the best atmosphere in Havana.

Techno Talk Asus Zenbook UX301LA

Is this Asus Zenbook more than just another laptop? The Asus Zenbook UX301LA is an Ultrabook with a 13.3-inch IPS screen that retains the 13-inch MacBook Air-like wedge shape of its original 2011 incarnation. It has been given a fresh look with new materials replacing that version›s aluminium lid and chassis, a style that has become all too predictable from laptop designers. The 2011 version was of the first laptops to adhere to Intel’s Ultrabook specification, which places strict design guidelines on manufacturers. To earn that label, laptops must meet certain requirements regarding its dimensions, battery life, and so on. Fast forward to now, and Intel’s modern Haswell mobile platform, called Shark Bay, requires Ultrabooks to be no more than 20mm thick, with a battery that can cope with 6 hours of HD video playback. A touch-sensitive screen is now mandatory, along with support for features such as Intel›s WiDi wireless display.

The Asus Zenbook UX301LA is now dark blue, which appears almost black under dim lighting conditions. The lid is covered in a layer of scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass, and the area around the chassis is made from ceramic, for a smooth but solid feel. As with the majority of modern computers, the backlit keyboard uses the familiar isolated or chiclet style, which is great for typing on, but might not appeal to gamers wanting big and chunky WASD keys. Asus has gone beyond the basic Ultrabook specification. The Asus Zenbook UX301LA comes with 802.11ac wireless networking, a choice of high-PPI touch-sensitive screen resolutions of either 1920 x 1080 or 2560 x 1400, 8GB of memory, a dual-core Core i5 or Core i7 Haswell processor, which naturally comes with Intel’s Iris integrated graphics, and dual 128 GB Sandisk SSDs in RAID 0. The 802.11ac wireless card is a two-stream Intel 7260 adapter.

Verdict

I’m slightly underwhelmed by the blandness of the Asus Zenbook UX301LA. There›s nothing to really hate about it, but nothing to truly love either. Anyone who buys one wont find any real faults with it, but is unlikely to relish the opportunity to open and use it. When sitting in a computer shop, along with row after row of other similar laptops, it’s hard to imagine the Asus Zenbook UX301LA drawing crowds. In that situation, the immediate stand-out feature will certainly be the price tag, and it may take a creative salesperson to convince a customer that the UX301LA is significantly better than another Ultrabook that costs a third less.

Techno Logic Latest Gadgets and what you will love about them! Toshiba Kira

All’s well that’s Haswell for Toshiba’s updated Ultrabook

Toshiba’s new Kira is a 2014 update to last year’s model, which marked the company’s first foray into premium Ultrabook territory. With a sleek chassis, still-impressive WQHD+ display and improved battery life, it joins a growing list of competing Windows Ultrabooks toting highresolution, high-pixel-density displays. And there’s a fair few of them. After years of putting out dependable if slightly uninspired mid-range laptops, Toshiba’s original Kira was a statement of intent, a flash Bentley coming off a production line of threedoor hatchbacks. A spec boost to an already attractive Ultrabook is welcome, but is it enough to launch the Kira into pole position? Apple hasn’t yet launched its almost legendary MacBook Air with Retina, but if it did it’d probably look a bit like the Kira. Measuring 23mm at its thickest point, its body tapers toward the bottom making it appear thinner. The black bezel surrounding the screen is eye-catching; not only is it thinner than what you would find on a MacBook Pro, it’s part matte and part glossy which makes it a little more interesting to look at too.

42

JULY 2014

Final Verdict

The Kira’s longer battery life, compact stylings and attractive looks (with the lid open) are all plus points for Toshiba’s second Ultrabook, but some of the flaws are real deal-breakers. The most glaring Razer Nabu SmartBand one is the display’s lackluster backlight, which is an unfortunate one considering the highly reflective nature of the display and its average viewing angles. However, it’s still a highly portable machine that would suit professionals seeking an Ultrabook with good battery life, competent performance and perhaps a little more in the way of style than substance. If the Kira was a bit cheaper it would be easier to look over its The Razer Nabu is rolling out to early developers right now misgivings, but when the competition is this and then to beta testers on July 10, but it’s a little different strong, it makes it something of a hard sell in 2014. from the smartband we went hands-on with at CES 2014. Razer has dropped the device’s top, public-facing OLED in the five months leading up to E3 2014, but it has kept the more secretive screen that sits on the underside of wearers› wrists. This is Nabu’s all-important ‘private message screen.’ It keeps notifications like calls, text messages and emails away from prying eyes while you still stay informed with the flick of your wrist. The Razer Nabu isn’t meant to be the most flashy wrist-worn wearable. It’s being designed so that users can discreetly check important notifications and almost forget about it. The band simply vibrates whenever a call, text, email or social media notification is beamed to your wrist from a compatible iOS or Android device.

A smartband that features a discreet screen

Early verdict

The Razer Nabu isn’t ready to graduate from prototype form just yet and the company, mostly known for gaming peripherals, seems to be heavily relying on third-party developers to push its software to new and better places. That means the best is yet to come and up to the creative community if it catches on to enough wrists. Springing for a smartband shouldn’t be too difficult as the Razer Nabu developer price is an affordable $49. That’s one third of the price of other fitness wearables out there and this one includes smartwatch-like notifications to boot.

Samsung NX Mini

Some interesting specs in a teeny tiny body

The compact system camera has been around long enough now that we›re starting to see more and more from each manufacturer. At first they were seen as something to take on the mighty DSLR, and while that’s still true, there’s also a growing number of smaller compact system cameras which find their competition more readily within the compact arena. One of the first manufacturers to launch a CSC, Samsung has a reasonable heritage in this market now. So it doesn’t come as a huge surprise that the company has launched a second mount to add to its line-up, to create the ultra small Samsung NX Mini.Unlike other Samsung compact system cameras, which use large APS-C sized sensors – the same size as found in most beginner and enthusiast level DSLRS – the NX Mini features a one-inch sensor, the same size as found in the Nikon 1 range of CSCs, and interestingly the same size as found in the Sony RX100 II – a compact camera with a fixed lens. The sensor features 20.5 million pixels, and is a backside illuminated CMOS device. To join the new sensor, Samsung has had to create a new mount, and therefore a new range of lenses. So far, there are just three such optics available to buy – a kit zoom lens, with a focal range of 9-27mm (one inch sensors have a crop factor of 2.7x so that’s roughly 24-72mm in 35mm terms), a 9mm f/3.5 pancake lens and a 17mm f/1.8 lens.

Final verdict

The Samsung NX Mini is an interesting camera. It fits the niche area of the market of those looking for something ultra small that they can take manual control of and change the lenses. For the moment, that lens range is small, and it’ll presumably be down to consumer demand whether the range is expanded further to include more optics. While the body itself is small, and the kit 9-27mm lens is small when compared to some lenses from other systems, it›s not a pocketable device unless you attach one of the pancake lenses. One of the biggest pluses of this camera is its relatively low price. It’s cheaper than the Panasonic GM1, but it’s not quite as cheap as the Nikon S1, with which it shares a sensor size – the Samsung offers a fair amount more than the S1 though for your money. MASERATI GHIBLI A TRIDENT MISSILE

By Fayez Abubacker INTRODUCTION Mazzzeraaaattti. Yeah! The brand is so synonymous with smouldering Italian sexuality, with unhinged speed and head-swivelling performance. The word ‘gib-lee.’ is named for an African desert wind—and yes it would be the perfect name for this hot Italian sedan. With its deliciously curved lines, the Ghibli’s looks are backed up by what’s under the hood. It’s only taken Maserati 99 years to have a crack at the intensely competitive upper medium segment. So; does the new Maserati Ghibli deserve the attention it’s receiving? Let’s find out. 44

JULY 2014

Auto Review

OUR 6 POINT REVIEW 1. EXTERIORS

The low snout takes inspiration from the Gran Turismo coupe, while the distinctive trident badge and all headlights provide a menacing look. It›s aggressive and sharklike gaping grille looks like it might eat you alive given the chance. Its front wings rise over the wheels and behind the arches is a set of three false air vents – a typical Maserati design touch – while the low roof and small glass area add to the sporty feel. Maserati badges on the C-pillars are another traditional touch, but the narrow rear screen, rounded bootlid and small LED lights give it a bit of a dumpy look.

2. INTERIORS

Deluxe appointments include a two-tone leather dash, leather door armrests and a suedelike headliner, high-gloss wood and carbon fiber. There›s frameless glass in the doors and a Maserati clock in the middle of the fascia. On the other hand, many of the knobs, 8.4 inch touch-screen display and tactile interfaces (appear to come from the Chrysler shelves and feel more utilitarian than you›d like at this price (parent automaker Fiat owns both Maserati and Chrysler). The Ghibli’s front seats offer outstanding comfort, as the seats’ thick padding and firm side bolsters are ideal for a weekend jaunt on a back road or a long interstate drive. Rear cabin space is a bit tight.

3. PERFORMANCE

With Maserati, a racing heart has always been standard, of both the mechanical and

biological types. The twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6s designed by Schumacher-era Ferrari F1 engine guru Paolo Martinelli offers 345 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque to the rear-wheel. Sixty takes just over six seconds, and achieves 19 mpg in combined driving. All Ghiblis come with an eightspeed paddle-shift ZF transmission, multilink rear suspension and double wishbones up front, Maserati›s electronically controlled Skyhook dampers, a limited-slip differential, Brembo brakes and hydraulically assisted steering. And all benefit from 50 per cent front, 50 per cent rear weight distribution.

4. RIDE AND HANDLING

It starts with a loud supercar gurgle— everyone loves an Italian accent, right? In normal driving around town or on the freeway, the 2014 Maserati Ghibli is quiet and pretty composed for a midsize luxury sport sedan. More impressive, though, is the way the Ghibli carves through turns with unexpected agility and confidence. There isn›t a ton of feel, it›s slightly vague, it›s not as good as some highly tuned electric systems, and that›s disappointing. There is some decent feedback, but other than that, I felt disconnected from the road. Thankfully, the car itself handles swell. A Sport mode alters the steering, gearbox, throttle, and exhaust settings, with a separate control for the two-stage damping.

5. SAFETY

Standard safety features for the 2014 Ghibli include antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, anti-whiplash headrests and a chassis with hot-formed steels in crucial crash zones are all designed for unbeatable occupant protection. Front and

rear parking sensors are optional, but other safety technology like blind-spot monitoring, 360-degree parking cameras, lane keeping assist and forward collision mitigation aren›t offered.

6. EQUIPMENT

Standard features on the base model include 18-inch wheels, bi-xenon headlamps, keyless ignition/entry, cruise control, six-way power front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, power adjustable steering wheel, rearview camera, 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system and an onboard WiFi hotspot. Various package and stand-alone options allow you to customize the Ghibli with an array of wood, carbon fiber and upgraded leather trim. Several wheel designs are available, up to 21 inches in diameter, as are brake calipers in multiple colors. Notable options include a driveradjustable adaptive suspension, steeringwheel-mounted paddle shifters, poweradjustable pedals, a power rear sunshade and ventilated front seats.

Verdict

The Ghiblis are more approachable, affordable Maserati, but at this price point it both loses a bit of its mystique, and faces some very stiff competition. However rivals’ booming sales mean their cars are now just traffic. Seeing a Maserati is still an event. We appreciate fully the power of looking out of your window and seeing a beautiful Maserati on the drive. From the way it looks to the sense of occasion it imparts, this car is special. JULY 2014

Understated Majesty Majestic Arjaan by Rotana

One of the many duplexes of the hotel

otana opened its first property in Bahrain last year in the Busaiteen district of Muharraq with 128 suites. The grandeur of the place is apparent from the moment you enter the reception and lobby space. Colourful light frames and sleek furniture adorns the place and a gigantic, azure swimming pool tempts from behind the glass doors. The accommodation A striking aspect of the accommodation is that the hotel is divided into studio rooms and duplexes encompassing one, two and three bedrooms. Every room has a balcony and an open kitchen, furnished with cozy yet modern furniture and linen. A mini bar, dishwasher, washing machine, kitchen utensils and toiletries are also equipped in most rooms. It is an ideal choice for the business or leisure traveller. Each apartment offers more space and freedom compared to the equivalent standard hotel room. The short and long stay apartments maximise space and comfort, cleverly designed and arranged to create a home away from home experience. Majestic Arjaan is the only hotel offering duplexes and is gaining swift eminence among families who travel to Bahrain for weekends or longer holidays. on the guests needs. An interesting feature of the 3-bedroom duplexes is that it has its own luggage room and maid’s room, proving to be a boon for large families that bring nannies to look over the children. Every room has a view of the splendidly manicured lawns of King Hamad University Hospital and the Manama skyline in hindsight or the cobalt pool waters of the hotel. For my stay, I chose the studio apartment and was immediately taken aback by the inviting décor. A complimentary plate of fresh fruit and Arabic sweets was kept at the little dining table facing the kitchen. A notable attribute of the hotel is its emphasis on eco-friendly and sustainable initiatives in a bid to reduce the carbon footprint of the hotel. A note in the restroom briefs about the same, requesting guests to reuse the towels and bedding if they wish to contribute to a cleaner and greener environment. Facilities and dining options The hotel features the latest high-tech facilities including fully-equipped meeting rooms with the most up-to-date audio-visual equipment. It also gives guests a chance to wind down and relax at any of the numerous leisure facilities that include an outdoor temperature-controlled swimming pool, a fully-fledged fitness centre, with steam and sauna rooms. Besides the 24-hour room service menu, Majestic Arjaan by Rotana also features an all-day dining restaurant titled ‘Ginger,’ offering a breakfast buffet and an a la carte for lunch and dinner. Ginger is fun and quirky, with a brightly-hued decor. 48

Hotel Review The gym facility is equipped with the cutting-edge equipment from Technogym and is open daily till 11 pm. The steam and sauna facility is fairly big space, and you can control the temperature to your convenience. For tots, a playground with a cute garden is sure to entertain the kids for a few hours. There is a business corner at the lobby level equipped with computers. The hotel seems to have a high occupancy rate even during weekdays, signifying the popularity it has gained within a year of its opening. The opening of Majestic Arjaan by Rotana represents an important achievement for Rotana, and a major milestone in the strategy to expand further in the Middle East and African region. This is the first property in Bahrain, a fascinating city with an attractive liberal lifestyle, a rich history and culture, with a strong demand for luxury hotels that offer world-class hospitality. Another Rotana property is scheduled to open in Amwaj Islands soon, and is sure to impress guests with the same high standards followed by the hotel chain. They will be offering special packages to their loyal guests for summer and the holy month of Ramadhan. For more details call +973 17370000.

Spa Review

T

he Ramee Grand Hotel and Spa in Seef has received great acclaim for its dining and entertainment options but another great feature it has to offer is the opulent spa facility. The spa is fittingly named ‘Reborn’ for the tranquil serenity it emanates from the moment you enter the balmy space. It is located right next to the outdoor pool, providing a scenic view of the same. An oriental theme envelopes the spa, with warm tones of orange and beige fused in the décor, tea lights and statues of Buddha sitting in blissful calmness. The spa has around 13 treatment rooms offering facials, massages and treatments for men, women and couples. Ayurvedic treatments and Moroccan baths along with various massages and facials are among the few treatments offered. In addition to that there is also a salon offering grooming services for men and women. A unique convenience point is that each treatment room has its own changing room, locker and shower cubicle, so you won’t have to walk outside the room to get changed. Based on the type of spa treatment you choose, you get either a high or low massage bed. Each room is impressively done up with soothing music in the background and relaxing décor. I was scheduled for an hour-long Argan oil massage and a luxury manicure and pedicure.

The spa attendant assigned to me was a wonderful lady named Vassana, who explained the benefits of Argan oil. Argan oil is often referred to ‘liquid gold’ from Morocco because of its invaluable uses. It is still produced by traditional methods from the nut of the Argan tree and takes almost a day to produce one litre of the oil. It contains many antioxidants and culinary, medicinal and cosmetic applications. The massage entails brisk yet slow strokes so that the Argan oil penetrates the skin’s layers for optimum benefit. Vassana worked on dissolving the stress knots in my upper back along with easing the muscles of my lower back, arms and legs. I almost dozed off into a peaceful slumber as waves of relaxation washed over me. After the massage was done, I was offered a lush cup of hot chocolate in the relaxation area outside the treatment room. The manicure and pedicure was scheduled for an hour later so I decided to grab a bite at Tea Garden, a chic tea and coffee shop located on the lobby level of the hotel. The luxury manicure and pedicure includes a luxurious hand a foot scrub with a regular pedicure in a massage chair, a perfect way to de-stress at any time of the day. Besides regular treatments, the spa also offers weight loss and body sculpting programmes. For bookings call, 17 111 980 / 17 111 999 JULY 2014

choose to go with the buffet or a la carte menu. We were greeted by the friendly waiter with the beverages menu, which is dotted with a distinct variety of refreshmentsRaspberry lemonade, Arabic Champagne, Basil-ade and Liquid Turkish Delight to name a few. Curiosity got the best of me as I settled for Arabic Champagne and Liquid Turkish Delight. We were then presented with the menu, which left us spoilt for choice between entrees, grills, meat and fish dishes and shawarma. We settled for Bread and Dips for starters, which has a choice of homemade breads like Saj bread, Moroccan cheese and paprika, Turkish sesame seed, Lebanese bread and Egyptian Zatar. The three dips included roasted eggplant, Tzatziki and roasted red bell pepper dip. The bread was fluffy and flavourful, with scrumptious fillings and went perfectly well with the dips. The Arabic champagne is the perfect summer drink, with undertones of peach, orange and apple for a fresh zest. I was expecting the Liquid Turkish Delight to be incredibly sugary but this mocktail captured the essence of a rose-flavoured Turkish delight in perfect synchronicity. For main course, we were served with gourmet shawarma, Safi fish with fruits and tomatoes, and Shish Tawook from the grill. The concept of a gourmet shawarma works in a way where you choose exactly how it is made. You get to choose your bread, then the filling and finally the marinade. The presentation is impressive, two delicate wraps served with French fries and Tahini sauce. The Safi fish came with rice served in the shape of a pyramid, which was impressive. The rice had a hint of sweetness along with

Delicious buffet offering at Bayti chunks of fruit, a great mishmash of the two flavours. The grills, chicken Masti kebab, was served on skewers topped with crescent moon and had a hint of Arabic spices, lemon juice and touch of olive oil. Bayti is the only restaurant with an option for chocolate shawarma for dessert. A massive slab of white and milk chocolate is placed on a shawarma stand, which is then shaved and mixed with either oreo cookies, marshmallow and mixed nuts or fresh fruit and served in a sweet crepe wrap. The rolls come with a side of pineapple fries with a sprinkling of cinnamon and some ice cream. The chocolate shawarma tastes sinfully good, like a chocolate lover’s dream come true. Bayti offers a great environment with an amazing choice of food which is sure to satisfy every palate.

How to pack everything in one bag A guide to travelling light for your holiday

P

acking for your holiday can be a challenging task. Given that more and more airlines charging extra to check a second piece of baggage, packing light has become a necessity. Also, packing light is gives you a better chance to shop at your destination instead of hoarding your space. Here are some tips to cram everything you need into one single bag. 1. Check out the weather at your destination before you go. Is it going to rain? Pack a rain suit or something that can get wet and dry quickly. If it is going to be hot, pack shorts. Don›t forget: Do you need a bathing suit or swim clothes? 2. Plan each day in advance. This will help you decide how many pieces of clothing to take. Too much and you will regret carrying everything. Remember you can always buy a cheap t-shirt or a pair of shorts at your destination. You will regret it if you pack too much, but if you pack too little you can always compensate for it. Remember probably every town you have ever been in has had a laundromat. Over-packing will also leave less room in your suitcase for purchasing gifts and souvenirs. 3. Put large or heavy clothing at the bottom. Always put heavier or larger items at the bottom of the suitcase. This will make it easier to find items in your suitcase. 4. Pack several lightweight layers. This will work well for both hot and cold weather, as you can add more if you’re too cold, and take some off if you’re too hot. 5. Choose between rolling and folding your clothing. If you need more space in your suitcase and aren’t worried about the weight, roll your clothes. Bigger radius means fewer wrinkles. If you do not need as much space and want to keep the weight down, fold your clothes. Roll items as tightly as possible in order to achieve the space saving effect. Rolled items will need to be packed tightly, which is why this method should only be used if space is at a premium. Rolled items not tightly packed will cause them to unroll and wrinkle.

6. Use the inside of your shoes as storage space. Stuff your socks inside your shoes if there is no other room for them (it will also keep the shoes shape). If you have any other small trinkets, you can put that in your shoes, too. Put shoes in a plastic bag after that is done to avoid damaging any other items or making them dirty. 7. Pack fragile items in the center of your case. This way, they are less likely to be broken. If possible, don’t bring anything fragile. 8. Use creases and gaps to place underwear. Fit the underwear and socks down the sides once the case is full. This will make sure that you don›t fill up valuable space in the middle.
