A first car can feel like flying. After losing my initial 1998 Honda Civic was lost to mother nature in the Houston Tax Day Floods of 2015, I was devastated. It wasn’t until 2 summer jobs, occasional pet sitting gigs, and an affinity for estate sales would I find something even better than a first car, a second car. The 2002 beige Honda Civic I purchased originally belonged to an older woman who had passed away. It had some dents on the back because she took her time driving into her gated community. There was a smell of cigarettes, all beige seat covers, a peach-colored Revlon lipstick in the glovebox, and a series of 6 soundscape CDs called “Midnight Fantasy.
I bought the car right then for $2000.

A second car can feel like a companion. This is the car that I drove across the country in, moving on my own for the first time. It’s the car I sit in to kill time when I arrive places too early. It’s the car I left in parking lots while I went on 20 hour long dates. It’s the car that I blast Fearless by Taylor Swift in because it only has a CD player component and the majority of my active CD buying days were 2011-2014. It’s the car that has a pretty much permanent power steering fluid leak. It’s the car that was hit by a guy named Trevor who wasn’t looking when he changed a song while he was speeding to Young Life. It’s the car that needs a passenger seat airbag recall. It’s the car that has dents, and scratches, and 2 windows that don’t roll down. Most of all, it’s the car that’s more home than any of my past homes. After moving 5 times in 4 years, the car has become more of a museum than a mode of transportation. In this book, or website, I’ve documented everything in my car. Wearing gloves and a mask and handling its contents with the utmost care. There are a lot of things wrong with my car. Despite all it’s flaws, I love my car. Til death or public transportation do us part.
