Dear Cadets,

ORDINATION AND COMMISSIONING 2023 2

GREETINGS FROM THE TERRITORIAL LEADERS

I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy.

Dear Reflectors of Holiness,

The Salvation Army USA Eastern Territory welcomes you as the newest officers in our ranks!

We thank God for you and for your commitment to serve Him as Reflectors of Holiness. As you serve the community to which you will be appointed, we pray that you may be confident that, “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus,” Philippians 1:6. The Lord goes before you.

Together with One Accord, we rejoice in your calling, commissioning and appointing as Reflectors of Holiness. We praise the Lord for you as you enter the ranks of Salvation Army Officership, a mission most visibly characterized by a legacy of service.

May your every thought, word and action truly reflect our Holy God as you minister in His name. In the midst of joyful, busy, even difficult days, always seek His face in all things as you mirror Him.

The entire USA Eastern Territory is cheering you on and lifting you in prayer.

May God bless you and keep you.

Commissioner Verona holds a Master of Arts Degree in Pastoral Psychology & Counseling and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Guidance and Counseling. She also has certificates in Supervisory Management and Public Speaking from Training and Development Services, a branch of Human Resource Development.

Commissioner Devon Haughton entered The Salvation Army Training College in 1979 as a member of the “God’s Soldiers” session. A delegate of the 145th Session of the International College for Officers (ICO), he also participated in training courses for Training Principals in Santiago and London. He has completed studies in Management at William & Catherine Booth Theological College. The Commissioners served in corps and institutional appointments in Jamaica, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago, and were Divisional Leaders for the Eastern and Western Jamaica Divisions. SPECIAL GUESTS

JIM AND CAROL CYMBALA and THE BROOKLYN TABERNACLE SINGERS

Since their humble beginnings in 1971, Pastor Jim and Carol Cymbala have served as spiritual leaders of the Brooklyn Tabernacle, which is today an historic 3,300–seat, non–denominational megachurch in Brooklyn, N.Y. About 10,000 people attend services each week at this church that is world renowned for its melodic Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, which has received six Grammy Awards so far.

Despite the accolades, the church’s focus remains on the importance of prayer. Each week, thousands of people join weekly to lift the needs of the world to God. He has also given the church a worldwide platform to proclaim the gospel through music.

Carol Cymbala is director of the multi–ethnic, multiracial chorale. Despite her lack of formal musical training, she has nonetheless written many of its signature songs.

The Cymbalas are also longtime friends of The Salvation Army, having ministered at various events on several significant occasions during the past 18 years.

“It is my privilege,” said Pastor Cymbala. “In fact, we’re looking forward to June 9th, when the Brooklyn Tabernacle Singers and Carol and I will be in Hershey, Pa., with you all.”

A WORD FROM THE TRAINING PRINCIPAL

Dear Reflectors of Holiness Session,

On behalf of the officers and staff of the College for Officer Training, I want to share my congratulations with each of you upon your Ordination and Commissioning as Salvation Army Officers.

It has been a true blessing for my wife and I to journey with each of you and your beautiful families over these past two years. We have seen you grow in faith, in knowledge, in experience, in confidence, and in holiness during these days. Well done, my friends!

As you now prepare to begin your first appointments as Salvation Army Officers, it is my prayer that the Lord will daily provide you all with every opportunity to personally share the Good News of the Gospel and meet people at their point of need. I also pray that you will continue to sense the anointing and power of the Holy Spirit as you abide in His presence.

“It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness, and redemption” I Corinthians 1:30 (NIV).

May God Bless the Reflectors of Holiness!

ORDINATION AND COMMISSIONING 2023 12

THE COVENANT

The Steps in the Commissioning of Salvation Army Officers

1. The Signing of the Officer Covenant

The Officer Covenant is signed by a person to be commissioned and ordained. The Covenant is made between that person and God. It is the means whereby a person binds himself or herself to God in the making of solemn vows.

The Bible has many examples of believers entering into sacred covenants with God, who accepts their covenants as a serious undertaking. Each person signing the Officer Covenant does so of their own free will, in the clear understanding that the commitment is intended to be lifelong.

2. The Ordination and Commissioning

The Ordination and Commissioning allows the wider membership of the Body of Christ to gather in order to warmly affirm and encourage those about to become officers, and in order to witness publicly the moments of ordination and commissioning.

The cadets are helped by the prayers and intercession of the faithful. The cadets declare before many witnesses that they will be loyal to Christ, will hold to the Doctrines of the Army, will be available to the marginalized, and will be obedient to the principles and purposes for which God raised up The Salvation Army.

3. The Appointing

The Appointing is when specific responsibilities are placed upon the newly ordained and commissioned officer. The officer is granted the authority both to serve and to lead within the ranks of The Salvation Army. This is the outward authentication of an inward summons from God, and the imparting to the officer of the obligation to be a servant of all for the sake of Christ.

y C ovenant

CALLED BY GOD

to proclaim the Gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ as an officer of The Salvation Army I BIND MYSELF TO HIM IN THIS SOLEMN COVENANT

To Love and serve Him supremely all my days,

To Live to win souls and make their salvation the first purpose of my life,

To Care for the poor, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, love the unloved, and befriend those who have no friends,

To Maintain the doctrines and principles of The Salvation Army, and, by God’s grace to prove myself a worthy officer.

Done in the strength of my Lord and Saviour, and in the presence of the Territorial Commander, training school officers and fellow cadets.

REFLECTORS OF HOLINESS 21

The Cadets (standing) will say: In the name of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and in the presence of the officers, soldiers, and friends of The Salvation Army here assembled, we declare that:

1. We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, and that they only constitute the Divine rule of Christian faith and practice.

2. We believe that there is only one God, who is infinitely perfect, the Creator, Preserver, and Governor of all things, and who is the only proper object of religious worship.

3. We believe that there are three persons in the Godhead—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, undivided in essence and co–equal in power and glory.

4. We believe that in the person of Jesus Christ the Divine and human natures are united, so that He is truly and properly God and truly and properly man.

5. We believe that our first parents were created in a state of innocency, but by their disobedience they lost their purity and happiness, and that in consequence of their fall all men have become sinners, totally depraved, and as such are justly exposed to the wrath of God.

6. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has by His suffering and death made an atonement for the whole world so that whosoever will may be saved.

7. We believe that repentance towards God, faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit, are necessary to salvation.

8. We believe that we are justified by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and that he that believeth hath the witness in himself.

9. We believe that continuance in a state of salvation depends upon continued obedient faith in Christ.

10. We believe that it is the privilege of all believers to be wholly sanctified, and that their whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

11. We believe in the immortality of the soul; in the resurrection of the body; in the general judgment at the end of the world; in the eternal happiness of the righteous; and in the endless punishment of the wicked.

The Chief Secretary will say: Do you promise faithfully to maintain and proclaim these truths?

The cadets will reply: We do!

The Chief Secretary will say: Do you regard it as your duty to bear this witness everywhere, to strive to lead all persons to their only Savior, and for His sake to care for the poor, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, love the unloved, and befriend those who have no friends?

The cadets will reply: We do!

The Chief Secretary will say: Do you promise by holy living, boundless charity and adherence to the principles and discipline of the Army to show yourselves at all times to be faithful officers of The Salvation Army?

The cadets will reply: We do!

The Chief Secretary will say: In the name of God I accept the declarations and promises you have made this day. We will now proceed to your ordination and commissioning.

The officer is offered up to the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit by the intercession of the faithful in Christ. The officer declares by the signing of the covenant and by the commissioning that he or she will be loyal to scriptural truth and, by example in life, word and unsparing service, be true to his or her calling as Christ’s messenger.

SONGS: COVENANT SERVICE

Sunday, June 4 – 10:30 am

Take Thou My Life, Lord

I would be Thy holy temple, Sacred and indwelt by Thee; Naught then could stain my commission, ‘Tis Thy divine charge to me.

Take Thou my life, Lord, In deep submission I pray, My all to Thee dedicating, Accept my offering today.

Seeking to mirror Thy glory, Living to answer Thy call, Each faithful vow now renewing, Gladly I yield Thee my all.

Time, health and talents presenting, All that I have shall be thine; Heart, mind and will consecrating, No longer shall they be mine.

O for a heart of compassion, Moved at the impulse of love, Lost ones to bring to Thy footstool, Thy gracious riches to prove!

(1914–2009)

Here am I, My Lord

Dear Lord, I do surrender Myself, my all, to Thee; My time, my store, my talents, So long withheld by me. I’ve heard the call for workers, The world’s great need I see, O send me to the rescue, I’m here, my Lord, send me!

Here am I, my Lord, send me, Here am I, my Lord, send me, I surrender all to obey Thy call, Here am I, my Lord, send me.

Too long at ease in Zion I’ve been content to dwell, While multitudes are dying And sinking into Hell. I can no more be careless And say there’s naught to do, The fields are white to harvest And laborers are few.

O hear, Thou God of Heaven, The vows that now I make! To Thee my life is given, ‘Tis for the lost world’s sake. To serve Thee I am ready, Though friends and foes despise, I now present my body A living sacrifice.

Take My Life and Let It Be

Take my life and let it be Consecrated, Lord, to Thee; Take my moments and my days, Let them flow in ceaseless praise.

Take my hands and let them move At the impulse of Thy love; Take my feet and let them be Swift and beautiful for Thee.

Take my voice and let me sing Always, only for my king; Take my lips and let them be Filled with messages from Thee.

Take my silver and my gold, Not a mite would I withhold; Take my intellect and use Every power as Thou shalt choose.

Take my will and make it Thine, It shall be no longer mine; Take my heart, it is Thine own, It shall be Thy royal throne.

Take my love; my Lord, I pour At Thy feet its treasure store; Take myself and I will be Ever, only, all for Thee.

Battle Belongs

When all I see is the battle

You see my victory

When all I see is a mountain

You see a mountain moved And as I walk through the shadow

Your love surrounds me

There’s nothing to fear now For I am safe with You.

So when I fight, I’ll fight on my knees

With my hands lifted high

O God the battle belongs to You And every fear I lay at Your feet

I’ll sing through the night, O God, the battle belongs to You

And if You are for me

Who can be against me

For Jesus there’s nothing Impossible for You

When all I see are the ashes

You see the beauty

When all I see is a cross

God, You see the empty tomb.

Almighty Fortress, You go before us

Nothing can stand against The power of our God

You shine in the shadows

You win every battle

Nothing can stand against The power of our God.

O God the battle belongs to You

O Thou God of Full Salvation

O Thou God of full salvation, King of righteousness divine, Author of the new creation, Light of life, within us shine! Make us holy, make us holy; With Thy blessing make us Thine.

From all self and sin deliver, With Thy nature make us good; Make us kings and priests forever, Wash our garments in Thy blood. O’er our Army, o’er our Army; Send a great salvation flood.

Sun of righteousness arising, Cheer us while we bear the cross, Living, dying, sacrificing, Purify from sinful dross Thy disciples, Thy disciples; Teach us how to gain by loss.

Thou art love’s unfathomed ocean, Wisdom’s deepest, clearest sea, Heaven’s and earth’s salvation portion, Parent of eternity; Grace and glory, grace and glory; In abundance flow from Thee.

Great Is Thy Faithfulness

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father, There is no shadow of turning with thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not; As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.

Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed thy hand hath provided; Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above; Join with all nature in manifold witness, To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, Blessings all mine with ten thousand beside.

Goodness of God

I love You, Lord

For Your mercy never fails me

All my days, I’ve been held in Your hands

From the moment that I wake up

Until I lay my head

Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God

And all my life You have been faithful

And all my life You have been so, so good

With every breath that I am able

Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God

I love Your voice

You have led me through the fire

In the darkest night

You are close like no other

I’ve known You as a Father

I’ve known You as a Friend

And I have lived in the goodness of God (yeah)

And all my life You have been faithful (oh)

And all my life You have been so, so good

With every breath that I am able

Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God (yeah)

‘Cause Your goodness is running after

It’s running after me

Your goodness is running after

It’s running after me

With my life laid down

I’m surrendered now

I give You everything

‘Cause Your goodness is running after

It’s running after me (2x)

And all my life You have been faithful

And all my life You have been so, so good

With every breath that I am able

Oh, I’m gonna sing of the goodness of God

(I’m gonna sing, I’m gonna sing)

‘Cause all my life You have been faithful

And all my life You have been so, so good

With every breath that I am able

Oh, I’m gonna sing of the goodness of God

Oh, I’m gonna sing of the goodness of God

What A Faithful God Have I

Lord, I come before Your throne of grace; I find rest in Your presence and fullness of joy. In worship and wonder I behold Your face, Singing, “What a faithful God have I.” What a faithful God have I, What a faithful God. What a faithful God have I, Faithful in every way.

Lord of mercy, You have heard my cry; Through the storm You’re the beacon, My song in the night. In the shelter of Your wings, hear my heart’s reply, Singing, “What a faithful God have I.”

Lord, all sovereign, granting peace from Heaven, Let me comfort those who suffer. With the comfort You have given. I will tell of Your great love for as long as I live, Singing, “What a faithful God have I.”

Living Hope

How great the chasm

That lay between us

How high the mountain

I could not climb

In desperation

I turned to Heaven

And spoke Your name

Into the night

Then through the darkness

Your loving kindness

Tore through the shadows

Of my soul

The work is finished

The end is written

Jesus Christ my living hope

Who could imagine

So great a mercy

What heart could fathom

Such boundless grace

The God of ages

Stepped down from glory

To wear my sin

And bear my shame

The Cross has spoken

I am forgiven

The King of kings

Calls me His own

Beautiful Savior

I’m Yours forever

Jesus Christ my living hope

Hallelujah

Praise the One who set me free

Hallelujah

Death has lost its grip on me

You have broken every chain

There’s salvation in Your name

There’s salvation in Your name

Jesus Christ my living hope

(repeat)

Then came the morning

That sealed the promise

Your buried body

Began to breathe

Out of the silence

The Roaring Lion

Declared the grave

Has no claim on me

Jesus Yours is the victory

Hallelujah

Praise the One who set me free Hallelujah

Death has lost its grip on me

You have broken every chain

There’s salvation in Your name

Jesus Christ my living hope

(repeat)

Jesus Christ my living hope

God You are my living hope

Send Me

If it’s bandaging the broken or washing filthy feet

Here I am Lord send me.

If it’s loving one another even when we don’t agree

Here I am Lord send me.

If I’m poor or if I’m wealthy, I’ll serve You just the same

Here I am Lord send me.

On the mountain or the valley

I will choose to praise

Here I am Lord send me.

If I’m known by how I love let my life reflect How much I love You, I love You

And before You even ask oh my answer will be yes

‘Cause I love You, I love You.

If the truth cuts like an arrow I will say it anyway

‘Cause here I am Lord send me.

If it’s means that they’ll reject me, Lord I will still obey

Here I am Lord send me.

When I’m standing in Your glory

I’ll be glad I chose to say, Here I am Lord send me.

Well done good and faithful, I live to hear You say

Here I am Lord send me

Here I am Lord send me

Here I am Lord send me

In Christ Alone

In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song; This Cornerstone, this solid ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My comforter, my all in all, Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone, who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save: ‘Til on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied, For every sin on Him was laid; Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay, Light of the World by darkness slain: Then bursting forth in glorious day, Up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me, For I am His and He is mine, Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me; From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No power of Hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand; ‘Til He returns or calls me Home, Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand!

I’ll Go In The Strength of the Lord

I’ll go in the strength of the Lord, In paths he has marked for my feet; I’ll follow the light of his word, Nor shrink from the dangers I meet. His presence my steps shall attend, His fullness my wants shall supply; On him, till my journey shall end, My unwavering faith shall rely.

I’ll go, (I’ll go,) I’ll go in the strength, I’ll go in the strength of the Lord

I’ll go, (I’ll go,) I’ll go in the strength, I’ll go in the strength of the Lord.

I’ll go in the strength of the Lord To work he appoints me to do; In joy which his smile doth afford My soul shall her vigor renew. His wisdom shall guard me from harm, His power my sufficiency prove; I’ll trust his omnipotent arm, And prove his unchangeable love.

I’ll go in the strength of the Lord To conflicts which faith will require, His grace as my shield and reward, My courage and zeal shall inspire. Since he gives the word of command, To meet and encounter the foe, With his sword of truth in my hand, To suffer and triumph I’ll go.
