GREETINGS

F RO M T HE TRA ININ G PRINCIPAL

Dear Messengers of the Gospel, Congratulations on the completion of your training years at the College for Officer Training and on your Commissioning as Salvation Army officers. Yours is a beautiful vocation, which affords great freedom and opportunities for creative service to Christ and others. I pray that in the years ahead you will jealously guard and nourish your relationship with the Lord Jesus, by prioritizing prayer and time with Him, through daily attentiveness to Scripture, and continual turning away from sin and temptation. 2 Peter 1:3 reminds us that, “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life.” He has given you what you need. Yours is only to lay hold of it daily, uncompromisingly, over the long haul. The world has never been in greater need of the message you carry – the Good News of Jesus. You, Messengers of the Gospel, are part of God’s answer to that need. The needs of the world are great, but, the message you carry is a message of a great salvation (Hebrews 2:3), which is more than sufficient for the needs you will face. May the LORD go before you, sustain you in every difficulty, give you deep joy and peace in your inner being, and strength to persevere in loving God, your neighbor, and yourself. Your spiritual authority comes from the Lord and not from an organization. A rank or appointment do not provide this, but your ministry as officers in The Salvation Army will give you countless opportunities to announce and demonstrate the reign of God, that the Kingdom has come! Messengers of the Gospel – take strength from this eternal truth. True eternally, true at a point in redemptive history, and true in your life and ministry – that this Gospel is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes! (Romans 1:16) God bless you.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH AND PROMISE TH E CA D ETS In the name of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and in the presence of the officers, soldiers, and friends of The Salvation Army here assembled, we declare that we believe: 1. That the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, and that they only constitute the Divine rule of Christian faith and practice. 2. That there is only one God, who is infinitely perfect, the Creator, Preserver, and Governor of all things, and who is the only proper object of religious worship. 3. That there are three persons in the Godhead—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, undivided in essence and co–equal in power and glory.

4. That in the person of Jesus Christ the Divine and human natures are united, so that He is truly and properly God and truly and properly man.

8. That we are justified by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and that he that believeth hath the witness in himself.

5. That our first parents were created in a state of innocency, but by their disobedience they lost their purity and happiness, and that in consequence of their fall all men have become sinners, totally depraved, and as such are justly exposed to the wrath of God.

9. That continuance in a state of salvation depends upon continued obedient faith in Christ.

6. That the Lord Jesus Christ has by His suffering and death made an atonement for the whole world so that whosoever will may be saved. 7. That repentance towards God, faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit, are necessary to salvation.

10. That it is the privilege of all believers to be wholly sanctified, and that their whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 11. In the immortality of the soul; in the resurrection of the body; in the general judgment at the end of the world; in the eternal happiness of the righteous; and in the endless punishment of the wicked.

THE P RO M I SE The Chief Secretary Do you promise faithfully to maintain and proclaim these truths? The Cadets We do! The Chief Secretary Do you regard it as your duty to bear this witness everywhere, to strive to lead all persons to their only savior, and for his sake to care for the poor, feed the hungry,

clothe the naked, love the unloved, and befriend those who have no friends?

The Cadets We do!

The Cadets We do!

The Chief Secretary In the name of God I accept the declarations and promises you have made this day. We will now proceed to your commissioning and ordination.

The Chief Secretary Do you promise by holy living, boundless charity and adherence to the principles and discipline of the Army to show yourselves at all times to be faithful officers of The Salvation Army?

The officer is offered up to the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit by the intercession of the faithful in Christ. The officer declares by the signing of the covenant and by the commissioning that he or she will be loyal to scriptural truth and, by example in life, word and unsparing service, be true to his or her calling as Christ’s messenger. 25

SONGS COV E N A N T S E RV IC E

“O Jesus, I Have Promised” John Ernest Bode (1816–1874) 1. O Jesus, I have promised To serve Thee to the end, Be Thou forever near me, My Master and my friend. I shall not fear the battle If Thou art by my side, Nor wander from the pathway If Thou wilt be my guide.

3. O let me hear Thee speaking In accents clear and still, Above the storms of passion, The murmurs of self-will. O speak to reassure me, To chasten or control; O speak to make me listen, Thou guardian of my soul.

2. O let me feel Thee near me; The world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, The tempting sounds I hear. My foes are ever near me, Around me and within; But, Jesus, draw Thou nearer And shield my soul from sin.

4. O Jesus, Thou hast promised To all who follow Thee, That where Thou art in Glory There shall Thy servant be; And, Jesus, I have promised To serve Thee to the end; O give me grace to follow, My Master and my friend.

“Grace Alone” Scott Wesley Brown and Jeff Nelson

“All Have Need of God’s Salvation” William John McAlonan (1863–1925)

1. Every promise we can make, Every prayer and step of faith, Every difference we can make Is only by His grace. Every mountain we will climb, Every ray of hope we shine, Every blessing left behind Is only by His grace.

1. All have need of God's salvation, If with Him they'd live forever; But a promise He has given, It is written: whosoever. Whosoever will may come, And who comes to Him shall never Disappointed turn away; Praise the Lord! 'tis whosoever.

Grace alone which God supplies, Strength unknown He will provide. Christ in us, our cornerstone, We will go forth in grace alone.

2. And this word it reaches nations; Not the rich or learned or clever Only shall by Him be rescued, O praise God! 'tis whosoever.

2. Every soul we long to reach, Every heart we hope to teach, Everywhere we share His peace Is only by His grace. Every loving word we say, Every tear we wipe away, Every sorrow turned to praise Is only by His grace.

3. For the poor and brokenhearted There's a hope, and they need never Have a fear about their coming, For the Book says: whosoever. 4. To all kingdoms and all peoples 'Tis the same, and shall be ever; There's no difference in the message, But to all 'tis whosoever.

FE LLOWS H IP OF TH E S ILV ER STAR LUNCHEON (FR IDAY ) “God’s Soldier” Harry Read 1. God’s soldier marches as to war, A soldier on an alien shore, A soldier true, a soldier who Will keep the highest aims in view. God's soldier goes where sin is found; Where evil reigns, his battleground; A cunning foe to overthrow And strike for truth a telling blow. We're going to fill, fill, fill the world with glory; We're going to smile, smile, smile and not frown; We're going to sing, sing, sing the gospel story; We're going to turn the world upside down. 2. God's soldier has to stand alone, Accepting burdens not his own; A lonely work he cannot shirk, Where dark and deadly dangers lurk. God's soldier must courageous be, And from his duties never flee, For millions wait, whose need is great, And he must not God's plan frustrate.

CO M M E N C EM ENT ( F RID AY ) “All Hail the Power” Edward Perronet (1726–1792)

“We Have a Gospel to Proclaim” Edward Joseph Burns

1. All hail the power of Jesus' name! Let angels prostrate fall; Bring forth the royal diadem And crown Him Lord of all!

1. We have a gospel to proclaim, Good news for men in all the earth; The gospel of a Savior's name: We sing His glory, tell His worth.

2. Let every kindred, every tribe, All nations great and small, To Him all majesty ascribe And crown Him Lord of all!

2. Tell of His birth at Bethlehem, Not in a royal house or hall But in a stable dark and dim: The Word made flesh, a light for all.

3. Ye sinners lost of Adam's race, Partakers of the Fall, Come and be saved by Jesus' grace And crown Him Lord of all!

3. Tell of His death at Calvary, Hated by those He came to save; In lonely suffering on the cross For all He loved, His life He gave.

5. O that with yonder sacred throng We at His feet may fall, Join in the everlasting song And crown Him Lord of all!

4. Tell of that glorious Easter morn: Empty the tomb, for He was free. He broke the power of death and Hell That we might share His victory. 5. Tell of His reign at God's right hand, By all creation glorified; He sends His Spirit on His Church To live for Him, the Lamb who died. 6. Now we rejoice to name Him king: Jesus is Lord of all the earth. This gospel message we proclaim: We sing His glory, tell His worth.

O F F I C E R S ERV ICE RECOGN ITION (SATUR DAY ) “I’ll Stand for Christ” Fred William Fry (1859–1939) 1. In the Army of Jesus we’ve taken our stand To fight ‘gainst the forces of sin, To the rescue we go, Satan’s power to o’erthrow, And his captives to Jesus we’ll win. I’ll stand for Christ, for Christ alone Amid the tempest and the storm. Where Jesus leads I’ll follow on; I’ll stand, I’ll stand for Christ alone. 2. We go forth not to fight ‘gainst the sinner, but sin; The lost and the outcast we love; And the claims of our King we before them will bring As we urge them His mercy to prove. 3. Jesus pitied our case, and He died for our race, To save a lost world He was slain; But He rose and now lives, and His pardon He gives Unto all who will call on His name. 4. Though our trials be great and God’s enemies strong To battle undaunted we go, For our warfare’s the Lord’s and to Him we belong, In His strength we shall conquer the foe.

THI S I S M Y STORY ( S ATU RDAY ) “Blesséd Assurance” Fanny Crosby (1820–1915)

“We’ve a Story to Tell to the Nations” Henry Ernest Nichol (1862–1926)

1. Blesséd assurance, Jesus is mine; O what a foretaste of Glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

1. We’ve a story to tell to the nations That shall turn their hearts to the right, A story of truth and mercy, A story of peace and light, A story of peace and light.

This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Savior all the day long. This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Savior all the day long.

For the darkness shall turn to dawning, And the dawning to noonday bright, And Christ's great Kingdom shall come to earth, The Kingdom of love and light.

2. Perfect submission, perfect delight, Visions of rapture burst on my sight; Angels descending, bring from above Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.

2. We've a song to be sung to the nations That shall lift their hearts to the Lord, A song that shall conquer evil And shatter the spear and sword, And shatter the spear and sword.

3. Perfect submission, all is at rest; I, in my Savior, am happy and blest. Watching and waiting, looking above, Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

3. We've a message to give to the nations, That the Lord who reigneth above Hath sent us His Son to save us And show us that God is love, And show us that God is love. 4. We've a Savior to show to the nations Who the path of sorrow hath trod, That all of the world's great peoples Might come to the truth of God, Might come to the truth of God.

O R D I N AT I O N & COM M ISS ION ING ( S U N D AY )

APPOINTMENT SERVICE (SUND AY )

“On Christ the Solid Rock, I Stand” Edward Mote (1797–1874)

“Who is on the Lord’s Side?” Frances Ridley Havergal (1836–1879)

1. My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness, I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus' name.

1. Who is on the Lord's side? Who will serve the king? Who will be His helpers Other lives to bring? Who will leave the world's side? Who will face the foe? Who is on the Lord's side? Who for Him will go?

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand, All other ground is sinking sand. 2. When darkness seems to veil His face I rest on His unchanging grace; In every high and stormy gale My anchor holds within the veil.

By Thy grand redemption, By Thy grace divine, We are on the Lord's side; Savior, we are Thine.

3. His oath, His covenant and blood Support me in the 'whelming flood; When all around my soul gives way He then is all my hope and stay.

2. Not for weight of glory, Not for crown and palm, Enter we the army, Raise the warrior psalm; But for love that claimeth Lives for whom He died; He whom Jesus nameth Must be on His side.

“How Great Thou Art” (chorus)

3. Jesus, Thou hast bought us Not with gold or gem, But with Thine own lifeblood For Thy diadem. With Thy blessing filling Each who comes to Thee, Thou hast made us willing, Thou hast made us free.

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee: How great Thou art! How great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee: How great Thou art! How great Thou art!

42

“And Can It Be?” Charles Wesley (1707 – 1788) 4. Fierce may be the conflict, Strong may be the foe, But the king's own army None can overthrow. Round His standard ranging, Victory is secure, For His truth unchanging Makes the triumph sure.

1. And can it be that I should gain An interest in the Savior's blood? Died He for me who caused His pain, For me who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! how can it be That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me? 2. He left His Father's throne above, So free, so infinite His grace, Emptied Himself of all but love And bled for Adam's helpless race. 'Tis mercy all, immense and free, For, O my God, it found out me.

Master, Thou wilt keep us, By Thy grace divine, Always on the Lord's side, Savior, always Thine.

3. Long my imprisoned spirit lay Fast bound in sin and nature's night; Thine eye diffused a quickening ray; I woke; the dungeon flamed with light. My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee. 4. No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him, is mine. Alive in Him, my living Head, And clothed in righteousness divine, Bold I approach the eternal throne And claim the crown, through Christ, my own.
