CREATING JOBS TO END POVERTY

Others is a Salvation Army initiative using fair trade principles to create jobs and contribute to empowerment and poverty alleviation. We sell beautiful products that are carefully handcrafted by our artisans in Bangladesh and Kenya.

Others artisans are engaged through relationships with local Salvation Army programs that focus on economic development in rural and urban settings. Examples include self-help groups focusing on women’s empowerment and projects for rehabilitation of sex workers or trafficking victims.

Through training, flexible working conditions and fair wages, our aim is to help our artisans to become more independent, helping them to provide for their families, improve their living conditions, and put their children through school. When supporting Others, you contribute to sustainable development in Bangladesh and Kenya.

You are now holding our 2023 global distributors Catalog which is released annually each February. In August we will update the Catalog with new product releases for spring.

This year we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of Others. We wish to celebrate the meaningful impact Others has had on the lives of countless artisans and their families. Join us in our year long celebration and the journey ahead for the next 25 years.

MEET AMEENA – ONE OF OUR ARTISANS

My name is Ameena. I have been married for 12 years and have 2 children. I have been 5 years with the Others program. It was challenging for me when I first started working with Others, because I had a young child. I had no income when I first joined the group. I was trained in skills like working with jute and embroidery. I now earn 4-5,000 Taka per month.

My income helps to support our family.

I have become very good at tailoring and I make all the cloths for my family.

With the income from Others, I have purchased chickens and ducks for cultivation.

I am very happy that am working.

OTHERS IN BANGLADESH

Others began as a local initiative for poverty alleviation in Bangladesh in 1997, and Bangladesh remains our largest producer country, currently involving around 760 artisans (both women and men).

Others Bangladesh produces a wide range of handloomed products, embroidered products, jute products, wooden products, natural fiber and leaf products, and knitted items. Production groups include women’s groups in and around the capital city Dhaka and in a number of villages in Central and Western parts of the country, as well as a handloom unit, carpentry unit and sewing unit in the city of Jashore.

Some artisans are recruited through specific community development projects run by The Salvation Army, such as The Salvation Army’s rehabilitation center in Old Dhaka which provides holistic care and training for women who have been victims of trafficking or exploitation. The Others operation is followed-up by The Salvation Army’s local team in Bangladesh, as well as partners from the Others Global network coordinated by The Salvation Army’s International Headquarters.

OTHERS IN KENYA

Others first contacts with Kenya were in 1999, with formal connections to some producer groups starting from 2004. Others currently works with nine different production groups in Kenya, located in both urban and rural areas. Products build on locally available raw materials and artisan’s skills, include bead and wire products, items made from sisal and leaf, as well as items made from recycled materials such as plastic and paper.

Most artisans are also linked with savings and loans groups overseen by The Salvation Army locally. In 2020 the partnership with Kenya was expanded to also include small-scale coffee farmers in the area of Matungulu. The first coffee was launched in Norway Christmas 2020, and the goal is to build a long-term partnership to help raise the standard of living for the Matungulu farmers.

Our placemats and coasters in jute are made by locally available natural fibers in Bangladesh.

Our artisans are involved in all steps of the process from harvesting the fibers to washing, drying, and weaving the final product. These products are made in Jhnaidah, Bangladesh, an area where this craft has long traditions.

These products are hand-embroidered by women in village and urban settings in Bangladesh.

The women can work from home at their convenience, or in the fellowship of a producer group at a local Salvation Army center. For some of our artisans this is their first opportunity to earn an independent income. Working for Others supports them in providing for their families, improving their living conditions, and putting their children through school.

These fig leaf baskets are made in Jhenaidah, Bangladesh, an area with a long tradition of crafting with fig leaves.

For the past 25 years Others has been creating jobs that transform the lives of our artisans. We want to celebrate this!

The two new anniversary products, Reusable Gift Wrap, and Reusable Embroidered Heart Card, are based on the embroidery pattern of one of our best-selling products for many years: Embroidered traditional hearts.

With these two new products, we want to encourage sustainable consumption and offer a nice alternative to single-use wrapping paper and cards. Therefore, these beautiful handmade products can delight new recipients again and again.

The Reusable Gift Wrap is made from natural white cotton and has a decorative hand-embroidered pattern in two corners.It comes in a pack of 2 with two different sizes, 50cmx50cm and 70cmx70cm.

On the packaging, there will be illustrated suggestions on how to wrap using the Reusable Gift Wrap, inspired by the traditional Japanese wrapping method Furoshiki.

These beautiful bags are handwoven by our groups in Kenya from local sisal plants. Our producers harvest the sisal, extract the fibers, dry them, dye them, spin threads, and weave the baskets. Genuine leather details adorn these lovely bags.

The top of the bag can be rolled, or unrolled for extra space and locks with a zipper for extra security. The front strap is made of leather and is secured with a practical magnetic lock.

There’s a padded computer pocket and a pocket for smaller items inside the backpack. The pack also has two padded side pockets and a front pocket.

The back has adjustable shoulder straps and padded back.

These reindeer are handmade by women in Kenya using glass beads and steel wire. This is a traditional skill, and small variations make every product unique. Every bead is counted and threaded by hand, a skill which requires precision and patience.

Many of our products incorporate embroidery detail, and this skill employs a large number of Others artisans in Bangladesh. This draws on a long tradition of embroidery, that is passed down from generation to generation. Our artisans are involved in all steps of the production of every product — from sourcing raw materials, to cutting, sewing, finishing and packaging.

WE BELIEVE THAT ALL PEOPLE HAVE EQUAL DIGNITY, and that everyone shares the same desire to provide for themselves and their family. However, far too many lack the opportunity to find a job, or are forced to work under poor working conditions. By creating flexible jobs with fair wages and access to international markets, we wish to do our part in giving more people access to decent employment. A particular priority is to ensure that women are given access to paid employment and the opportunity to earn their own income.

Our producers are primarily recruited through the Salvation Army’s local programs. Others has active production groups in Bangladesh and Kenya. Others partners with over 800 artisans. All products are handmade.

The materials for Others products are locally and sustainably sourced. We strive to combine the best of local hand-craft skills and traditions in our products.
