I grew up watching the Mary Martin live televised version of this musical
on repeat and have read Sir J.M. Barrie’s novel countless times, even into my adult life. This darling and clever show captures the magic of Peter Pan’s classic story so delightfully, I can’t help but to sigh and aww, even after dozens of hours of rehearsal and hundreds of hours of research; this of course, having taken place over the course of my life. This story is so dear to my heart, it has been a dream come true to bring it to the stage. The pirates still tickle my funny bone as they bend to every whim of their Captain. It intrigued me to offer a new interpretation as to what the natives of Neverland might be like; the Brave Kids. For me, their strength and wisdom contrast beautifully to the Lost Boys who seem to be just that; always lost at play. My own daughter has been the inspiration for much of the direction of this show; as I watch her play and grow, peeking in and out from behind the magic veil she lives behind. The part of me that struggled through the transition from childhood to adult life, I hope, is familiar to each of you as you engage in this story. I’ve never understood why people don’t classify Peter Pan as a tragedy. Peter chooses a life of solitude over connection and family. What he thinks is a life of adventure is in fact, fleeting. Because you see, Neverland makes you forget. We, too, have this choice - to be accepted into the family of God, or to walk away. The window is always left open, but the choice is yours to enter in. This is for all those children who feel lost, and for all the mothers who have lost a little one. Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ. (what pleasure he took in planning this!) He wanted us to enter into the celebration of his lavish gift-giving by the hand of his beloved Son. Ephesians 1:5 (MSG)
