editor’s note W

elcome to the fourth quarter edition of Ntshebele Magazine, the publication aimed at continuously informing, educating and entertaining you. We hope you have been enjoying this publication since its inception. We are proud to announce that we have received positive feedback, and that is what keeps us motivated to keep improving. We must ensure that we meet our targets and close off to start the new financial year on a positive note. Our work bears proof that we are indeed committed public servants. We work hard to produce excellent results. We appreciate all employees who have participated and contributed into the success of departmental programmes. Our aim is to produce good quality work and witness the fruits of our results, that is, happy and satisfied communities. We thank all of you for the hard work and as we are boarding the next ship of the 2017/18 financial year, let’s keep up the pace. The Service Delivery Model Structure has been in a process of consultation and amendments with the DPSA and Provincial Government. Since the last staff meeting engagements within different corridors which were aimed at engaging employees’ working relations, conditions and needs the structure is still currently within the DPSA for the assessment and once approved, employees will be consulted accordingly. The piloting of the Service Delivery Model Structure in the North Corridors has been developing very well and we have extended the piloting of the structure to the West Corridor. The pilot draft structure implementation aims to ensure that despite all these changes, we still put Gauteng citizens first. We still strive to deliver services to communities around the province without any challenges. The implementation phase of matching and placing as per the prescribed processes of the public sector will be kick-started thereof. The next steps will be communicated once the structure has been approved. The most important fact to take into account is to always remember that no staff member will lose their job - we are changing NOT retrenching! We would like to plead with colleagues to humbly assist us in making this magazine a success. You are the most important stakeholders in this regard and feeding content into it is very crucial. Share your success stories, social gatherings and positive moments with us. One person’s story can inspire another to be a better person. For those travelling during Easter holidays, keep safe and be vigilant. Enjoy!

I am originally from a small town called Belfast now known as Emakhazeni in Mpumalanga Province. “I’ve got Your Back Girlfriend” Campaign is a project focused on collecting and distributing sanitary towels to disadvantaged schools, Child headed homes and orphanages. We identify a disadvantaged schools or orphanages, find out how many girls attend at that school or stay at that particular orphanage so that we know exactly our target when trying to raise or collect as many sanitary towels. We use two months for collecting and raising awareness then on the third month we deliver all collected sanitary towels to the specific school/orphanage. It’s an ongoing campaign and we welcome as many new people who can assist. We are hoping to grow this campaign all over the country so that every area can have a group of people focusing on that particular area. Therefore we are basically planting a seed and encouraging people in that area to continue. We also do motivational talks during our visits and encourage the young ladies not to give up in life and we also provide them with information regarding wellness and Hygiene. We do not accept any finances/money. We encourage people to buy the sanitary packs and donate them to the targeted school/orphanage. This is to teach people the culture of thinking of those who are less fortunate when they are buying their groceries by including an extra sanitary pack every month on their grocery list. Our Vision is to grow the campaign and to see schools providing free sanitary packs to students on monthly basis with the help of government, private companies and communities. One of our dream is to see Private Companies, Government Departments, Community businesses and Entrepreneurs adopting a school which they will be providing sanitary pads to on monthly basis.

Pg 12.

I

started the Campaign In November 2015 after watching a documentary about young girls from Alexandra (Gauteng). The access of sanitary towels in disadvantaged areas has become a serious problem in South Africa as a whole. The consequences the girls suffer as a result has grab my attention. Sanitary towels are seen as luxuries and unaffordable therefore these young girls resort to retrieving and recycling used disposable pads and improvising makeshift pads from old clothes, rags, newspapers, bits of mattress, and other readily available materials. Some of these materials they use are unhygienic and lead to infections, they become uncomfortable at school because they have fear that they may have a leakage and end up ruining their uniform. Therefore many young girls resort to not going to school when they are on their periods. This means missing maximum 7 days of school every month It all basically goes back to Ubuntu, I don’t have to be related to a person to help them…If I see a gap and I can help I should. All the school visits were fulfilling especially when we reach our target but one that stood out was when a Primary School girl from Katlehong mentioned that her dream is to build a community hospital which provided quality services with quality doctors… Such a young girl with such a big dream and all she wanted was to give back to the community. I want to see myself excel and Prosper in my current career. I want to travel the world and do more humanitarian work, growing the “ I’ve got your back girlfriend” campaign internationally and see girls getting free sanitary pads at schools on monthly basis through the campaign. Maybe I will have my own family by then …. God Willingly!

Pg 13.

W

e are all were we are because someone believed in us and someone shared their knowledge and wisdom so don’t forget to give back …believe in yourself, know who you are and don’t forget where you come from…all things are possible no matter what age you are in…faith, respect, resilience, hard work and discipline will take you far especially when you ask God to guide your steps.

YOUR Andile Kolanisi “I have seen the magazine and the starting point should be understanding the objective of developing the magazine and whether it is living to that expectation looking at the targeted audience. The magazine is trying it’s best to achieve balance in reporting on the activities of cultural affairs programmes in comparison to that of sports and recreation programmes within the organisation. It is important that the magazine reflects on the issues of employees of the department, both soft and hard, whether it be HR issues or innovation and creative thinking within the organisation. The magazine should inspire creativity and encourage employees to be innovative. Creating dissatisfaction with the status quo should be what informs the magazine, particularly for the information related to the employees. ”

Nozipho Makhado “I love it. The magazine is beautiful. It’s beautiful, it’s nice and short and it covers a lot of different things, from what the department is doing to personal tips to birthdays. What I would like to see is more about new staff.”

Pg 17.

VIEWS Martin Chaka “I like that the magazine is in digital format. It shows the department is moving with the times and keeping up with electronic advancements. It would be nice to see more on local artists and some more comical content.”

Mpumi Yingwane “The magazine is creative. It gives us a chance to know who is doing what in the department and learn about the different units within the department. We also get to see who are the individuals excelling in different things like travelling overseas. Seeinig departmental stories makes you more aware of what’s happening withing the department.”

Fundani Mabaso “If we could cover more of departmental events, I feel that as time goes by I would get used to Ntshebele as a brand.”

3 SMALL THINGS TO DO FOR YOURSELF If you had to pick out three things, what would they be? I thought long and hard about this one, and realised it wasn’t that difficult to do more of the things I enjoy. It’s time to stop and smell the coffee! Take a time out for yourself and commit to doing 3 things that make you happy! I don’t mean buying new makeup or clothes (even though a new outfit and lipstick always helps), but little things you used to do before, that have somehow become irrelevant because they take up too much time.

Local Reads Trevor Noah’s path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show in New York began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Born a Crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. It is also the story of his relationship with his fearless, rebellious and fervently religious mother - his teammate, a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life. The eighteen personal essays collected here are by turns hilarious, dramatic and deeply affecting. Whether being thrown from a moving car during an attempted kidnapping or simply trying to survive the life-and-death pitfalls of dating in high school, Trevor illuminates his world with an incisive wit and an unflinching honesty.

“My Traitor’s Heart”, “Kaffir Boy” is an autobiography published in 1986 which equally tells a classic tale of life in Apartheid South Africa. This book is well captioned by its subtitle; “The True Story of a Black Youth’s Coming of Age in Apartheid South Africa” as it depicts the exact content of the book. It is really fascinating to read about young Mark who struggled through all the devastating odds of racial segregation and poverty to triumph.

Pool of netball talent in Gauteng packed full of potential By: Godfrey Pitje

After successful inaugural tournament last year, the second edition of the Gauteng netball tournament took place on the 11th February 2017, and proved to be a dazzling showcase of the provinces best young players on the rise. Held at Hoër Skool Dr Malaan in Mayerton in Sedibeng, teams from the five regions of the province competed in top from and set a new standard for the tournament. Ekurhuleni once again proved to be force on the courts, repeating the tournament win in the U-16 category and earing second place in the U-19 age group. Johannesburg came in second place in U-16 as they did last year, with the West Rand region U-19 being the Cinderella story of the tournament, winning the U-19 title. The tournament’s host region, Sedibeng, managed third place in both age groups. The provincial netball programme is evidently extracting quality players from the communities of the Gauteng City Region with the level of talent and skill on display at the tournament showcasing vast improvement in the players from last year, a testament to the hard work and dedication of the players, coaches and all other stakeholders’ commited to advancing sport. “We have so much talent to be cultivated in Gauteng, and with proper nurturing and support, these talented players could undoubtedly follow in the footsteps of the Proteas, who have had tremendous success on an international scale.” says MEC for the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Ms Faith Mazibuko. A group of players who participated in the tournament will be selected to be developed and taken for Gauteng trials to advance the national levels of competitive netball.

Boipatong Memorial and Youth Centre Boipatong falls under the Emfuleni Local Municipality which is situated along the southern boundary of Gauteng in an area known as the Vaal Triangle within the Sedibeng District Municipality. The Boipatong Memorial and Youth Centre is built in honour of the 49 people who were killed during the 17 June 1992 Boipatong massacre. This massacre became one of the turning points in South Africa’s history and highlighted the brutality of the apartheid system. The monument holds strong meaning for different groups of people who were part of the struggle for the national liberation of South Africa. The significance of the site where the massacre took place represents the triumph of the human spirit over adversity and this should be the legacy that characterises the Boipatong Massacre and it’s aftermath.
