Gauteng Celebrated Margaret Gazo On
Freedom Day By Gundo Maalakano
G
auteng celebrated the life and legacy of the late freedom activist stalwart, Ms Margaret Gazo on Freedom Day celebration 27 April 2022. The celebration took place in Kwa-Thema, Springs in Ekurhuleni where Ms Gazo lived. The move to honour Gazo is part of a programme by the Gauteng Provincial Government to honour heroes and heroines who contributed to our democracy and freedom.
This year’s Freedom Day was held under the theme: “Consolidating our Democratic Gains”. Together with the likes of the late MmeCharlotte Maxeke and Mme Francis Baard, MmeGazo was one of the organisers of the 1956 Women’s march to the Union Buildings. She organised and led marchers from Payneville, in Springs. She went on to spend five years in prison for political activism, for leading a local anti-pass demonstration and helping to organise the bigger national march. She died on 08 April 1974 aged 56. The Freedom Day celebration programme started at her house in Kwa-Thema with a 2,1km Heritage Walk to the local (Kwa-Thema) Cemetery where she lies buried. Gauteng Premier David Makhura, City of Ekurhuleni Acting Executive Mayor Cllr. Dino Peterson, MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Ms Mbali Hlophe, MEC for Finance and e-Government Ms Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko and invited guests laid wreaths by MmeGazo’s grave.
As part of proceedings for the (Freedom Day) celebration, her grave will provisionally be declared a heritage site. This is to allow for work to commence to a point where the grave is declared a full provincial heritage site. Among others, Gazo has posthumously been awarded the Order of Luthuli in Bronze for her role in ‘leading the women’s march and for her outstanding leadership and commitment to the ideals of democracy and her contribution to human rights and the struggle against apartheid’. Plans are on to turn her house into an Interpretation Centre on her role and contribution to the struggle including organising the Women for the march. A proposal for a street name change in Ekurhuleni has also been received in her honour. “The lengths, depths, pain and suffering people had to go through should never be taken for granted in ensuring that this freedom works and benefit all of South Africans. Looking at what Mme Gazo has done for this country and our freedom speaks at lot. The decision and scarify she took just for us to be liberated is very big and we shouldn’t take it for granted as we are free today. We should give her all the respect she deserves and honour her in a glorified manner.” says Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Mbali Hlophe.

saddened by the passing of Lebohang Quiteria Kekana By: Godfrey Pitje
T
he Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mbali Hlophe has learnt with shock and sadness of the passing of fashion designer Lebohang Kekana, who passed away on Sunday, 17 April 2022, after battling cancer. Kekana, popularly known as Quiteria, created garments for many South African stars such as Makhadzi, Boity Thulo, Natasha Thahane, Enhle Mbali, Thando Thabete, Dineo Moeketsi and many more. Kekana most notably dressed International super star Beyonce for the 2018 Global Citizen Festival staged at Soccer City, with former design partner George Malelu, under the Quiteria & George label.
11
MEC Hlophe wore Quiteria Atelier creations on several occasions, including the 2019 South African Music Awards, with the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts Culture and Recreation further supporting him by providing funding for his showcase at New York Fashion Week in 2019. In tribute to Kekana the MEC says, "Our fashion industry has truly taken a great blow with this tragic loss. Quiteria was a visionary and tremendously gifted designer whose work showcased talent and potential of our nation on the grandest global scale. He gave so much to our fashion industry, leaving behind a legacy that will live on for all those he dressed, inspired and mentored. May his soul rest in eternal peace.” The MEC, on behalf of the people of Gauteng expresses her condolences to the Kekana family and the fashion fraternity during this difficult time.

Family Day
By: Nomonde Ngcobo
F
amily Day was established with the purpose of strengthening bonds among family members in the South African society. Since this holiday is observed the day after Easter Sunday, it makes the Easter weekend longer for the people. Because of this, many South Africans take advantage of this break by traveling. While there are some who’d rather go abroad, many others book their getaway trips just within the country. Family Day and its preceding days Easter holidays are popular days for traveling, to different provinces destinations, resorts, and other attractions are expected to get a bit crowded on these days.
13
South Africa’s Family Day doesn’t necessarily have any traditional practices associated with it. The holiday’s celebration varies from family to family. While there are several families who choose to travel on this day (or even before this day considering the long weekend brought by Easter), other families are seen casually relaxing at their respective homes while enjoying the company of their loved ones. Playing games with the kids, or even simply watching tv shows which focus on the importance of family relationships, is already a great way to spend this non-working day.
Family Day in South Africa is meant to be enjoyed with the presence of their families, relatives, friends, and other people who are dear to them. On this day, family gatherings are a typical sight in the country. Most of the people also take advantage of this holiday to visit their parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles, and other family members who live in faraway places.

FOR THE SAKE OF THOSE WHO HAVE ONLY HEARD ABOUT YOUR NAME, PLEASE GIVE A BIT OF A PICTURE OF WHO TSHWARELO MATHEBULA IS. Ok. Let me try. I am not quite good really when it comes to speaking of myself. My full names are Tshwarelo Ignetious Mathebula but for obvious reasons I prefer to be called Tshwarelo. I was born on the 6th of December 198* at a small township called Praktiseer about 16 km outside a small town of Burgersfort. I am the first born and I have three younger brothers from my mother and many brothers and sisters from my aunts. I started my primary school at Bogwasha Primary school, proceeded to Leolo Secondary school where I did my matric in the early 2000s. I studied for 1 year at the then University of the North and during that year I was awarded a bursary to go and study engineering at the University of Pretoria. I did my Bachelor of Engineering, Honours and Masters degrees all at Tukkies. As we speak now I am trying to study for another qualification which I am trying very hard to complete. At the expense of many things, I always find a reason to enrol and study something. I have over 10 years working experience in various fields and sectors, ranging from private sector, academia and government. I am married to Ntshembo Mathebula and we are blessed with two wonderful daughters, Nxalati and Thatego. Back in the days in my student years, particularly at university, I spent some time in student activism and I have met so many people and learnt so many things and some of those things and some of those people that I met then have proven to be very instrumental in how my life shaped. Despite the many challenges that such a life come up with, it has really made me a much better person. I have quite an expansive family which has given me some of the values which I espouse in how I conduct my life. Most notably all the lessons I learnt from my maternal grandmother, Hunadi and of course my uncle, Malome Putitjie.

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL
TAKE US THROUGH YOUR CAREER JOURNEY BEFORE BEING APPOINTED AS HEAD OF NORTH CORRIDOR. Well I started as an intern at Carolex company which was actually owned by an older mentor of mine, where I was assisting with consulting work in the field of engineering, I think I worked there for a year while finalising my studies. After I got my bachelors degree, I worked for another consulting company that was contracted at the time to City of Tshwane, where I was working on Automated metering infrastructure and I was supervising a team of about 15 people. Thereafter, while continiung with my postgraduate education I went to the academia where I started first as a junior lecturer and upon receiving my Masters degree was promoted to a position of lecturer. I have also did some work on my small company for about 5 years, but I have since resigned from it and I am now focusing on my work in the department and finalising my studies. Having worked in all these different sectors, it has always been at the back of my mind to be part of the public service so that in my own small way I can try make a contribution in bettering the lives of our people. WHICH PLACE DO YOU CALL HOME? Well there is some form of a stereotype or is it a complement about people from Limpopo. Normally when the word home is mentioned, the default setting is to think of where one comes from in Limpopo. But in a sense of where one lives on a daily basis, I have 3 homes, 1 in Limpopo in a small township called Praktiseer, my second home is in Pretoria where I am currently staying. Thirdly my wife and kids are currently residing in Cape Town and that is where my third home is. Eventually I will have one home back in Limpopo.
18
WHO DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE HEARTBEAT OF YOUR FAMILY? Well as you may know that the word family in the African context can be quite broad. I don’t quite know where exactly my family ends in terms of how broad it is. But maybe in a more focused sense I would say my two beautiful daughters, Nxalati and Thatego. Me and my wife often reflect on how our lives have been so impacted by the two girls. So yeah it’s the girls.
WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU WOULD SAY HAS BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR WORK AS HEAD OF NORTH CORRIDOR? Save for few blemishes here and there, working in the North Corridor has been bliss. I have found people who were very willing to assimilate me into the corridor, who made sure that I move with them together as a unit. Most importantly working in the corridor where most of the programmes are community centred, you learn the importance of always knowing and understanding the communities around you. The success or failure of your programmes highly depends on how well we know our communities and their needs. The other funny thing is, I have grown up always respecting elders and addressing them as such, but when you are a director, most of the time such respect is directed at you. Given my age, it was a bit awkward at the beginning but I have learnt to understand it. I firmly believe in seeing myself as a colleague more than a director and I try to engender an environment where work is more central than hierachies. Besides the second family I found in the corridor I have learnt so so much from the colleagues in the corridor. 19
HOW DO YOU PREFER TO START YOUR DAY? On any given day, I wake up at 5 am and wrap my head around what my day would look like. Any pressing matters that require my attention for the day and those I should have completed the day before, I make a mental note of all of them. Of late I have developed a habit of drinking warm water in the morning, I think I saw some videos on Youtube on the many benefits of drinking warm water in the morning. I would also put on some music to play in the background while I prepare myself for the day. Just before I can leave for work, I go through a few social media plaforms to check what happened whilst I was sleeping. When all that is done, my day can now start. WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE CHANGE TO IMPROVE WORKING RELATIONS IN THE DEPARTMENT? The one thing about government is that there are a lot of processes and procedures that needs to be followed even to implement the smallest of programmes. The rate at which we provide the much needed services to our people needs to improve quite substantially. I therefore believe that a concerted effort needs to be put in ensuring that we deliver on our mandate and on the shortest possible time. I also believe that because work is a place where on a weekly basis we spend most of our time, it needs to be a very healthy place. We must always be mindful of the wellbeing of employees and do everything to be agents towards a more healthier working environment. So for me really two things, a more efficient and healthier working environment. WHAT’S THE ONE THING YOU CAN’T GO A DAY WITHOUT? Jazz music and speaking to my wife and kids. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION? Well I am not that well travelled I would say, my wife tries very hard to plan and drag me to all these wonderful holidays. For now I think Zanzibar is one of the best places I have had my holiday at. So far I have been to the island three times and in each instance I felt so wonderful about the place. A big determinant for me is the people, the warmth of the people and their excusite beaches. I would love to go to Cuba sometime soon, I hear it’s a wonderful holiday destination. way to Wear a Coat Once you have done the most difficult part and have chosen the right coat for your figure, it’s time to learn how to wear it right. Here are a few tips to be followed, if you want to create a stylish look:
21
Source: https://fashionisers.com
ashion
• Match the color of your coat with your outfits. You can certainly act creatively and color block your outerwear and outfit; however, sticking to the principle color blocking rules and working in the same color spectrum is the main trick to success. Otherwise, try to create a harmonious look, by choosing clothes in colors that don’t differ much from the color of your coat.
26
• Coats are more elegant outerwear than jackets, therefore try to appear super feminine and elegant wearing them. The best option is matching your coat with a dress or a skirt worn with some polished shirt. A pair of elegant trousers worn with heels will also go well with a coat. You will get a typical office-ready look, which is both chic and trendy. Leave the rest of your outfits (jeans, tees, etc.) to be worn with a leather jacket, for instance. • You can also turn on your style imagination and mix casual outfits with an elegant coat. For instance, a military style coat looks amazing, when worn with a pair of jeans and a sweater. Simply, try on various pieces to see, which option is the best one. Either create a harmonious look or, on the contrary, something outstanding and sometimes even strange, which will pop up in the gray crowd instantly.
• When it comes to the footwear to be worn with a coat, if course, the best option is high heel boots. However, if you aren’t that much into heels, you can try ones with a flat sole. If the weather isn’t that cold, you can also wear your coat with a pair of shoes, only if they really look chic with your coat. • Make sure to always complement your coat with a matchy scarf. This will boost the femininity and elegance in your look, and create a better impression. Coats worn with bare neck look unflattering, as it reveals all the layers worn under it and creates an impression of an incomplete look.
23
Last but not least, dear ladies, never refrain from coats, even if you are more into a sporty style and love some biker jackets. There are certain pieces you can never wear with those jackets, but only with classic coats. So make sure to have one in your wardrobe, or more than one style, in case you start loving it a lot. Pair it with a matching warm scarf and you are ready to survive another chill autumn and upcoming cold winter.
Must-Eat
Healthy Foods During
I
n addition to the significant changes you witness in energy bills and how you dress during winter, the chilly weather also affects your body. Your food preference, metabolism, and even energy levels change drastically during winter. The feeling of skipping the gym and eating or drinking a warm drink kicks in. If you feel this way, you are not alone. However, this doesn’t mean you should do nothing and wait until summer kicks in so that you can take charge of your life. The secret to staying healthy during winter is winterizing your diet. Here are some foods that you should try out this winter.
25
1. SOUP This is one of the best food that will help you live through winter comfortably. However, you should avoid much salt, beef soup, and cream to get the most out of this meal. You should get recipes that include water as the base and a lot of vegetables. A hot bowl of soup with chicken broth and some vegetables will leave you rejuvenated. You can pair your soup with whole-grain crackers. 2. DRINK MORE WARM MILK Milk and other by-products such as yogurt, cheese, etc. are a great meal choice for winter. This is because they pack a lot of vitamins B12 and A, proteins, and calcium, which boost a person’s health. Most people tend to catch a cold during winter. Drinking warm milk frequently will help you avoid falling ill. However, choose to drink skimmed or semi-skilled milk rather than full-fat milk. Moreover, you can take low-fat plain yogurts to decrease the number of calorie intake. 3. CAULIFLOWER AND BROCCOLI Apart from drinking milk, eating a lot of vegetables, and engaging in fitness activities, these vegetables can add to the defense against winter sickness. Both broccoli and cauliflower pack a lot of vitamin C, which enhances the immune functions. The chilly weather might pose a challenge in getting fresh vegetables. However, frozen cauliflower and broccoli pack the same nutritious benefits as fresh ones. 26
4. START YOUR DAY WITH PORRIDGE The secret to remaining energized until lunchtime is taking a healthy slow-release breakfast such as porridge. You can be creative with this morning meal by adding toppings such as seeds and nuts. Moreover, some winter fruits such as dates and apples can increase the health benefits of this meal. 5. CONSUME ROOT VEGETABLES Finding fresh vegetables during winter can be a daunting task. However, root vegetables such as carrots, turnips, and carrots can be readily available. This is because they can withstand the cold weather. Consuming these vegetables as either boiled, raw, roasted can endow you benefits such as vitamins A and C, and a boost of beta-carotene. 6. INCREASE YOUR INTAKE OF CHEESE, EGGS, AND FISH Even though the previously discussed meals might not be your cup of tea, you most likely like eggs, cheese, or fish. These meals pack vitamin B12, which boosts the normal functioning of the immune system. Moreover, these meals reduce fatigue and tiredness. What’s even better is that you can consume them at any time of the day. In essence, these meals will make your winter look shorter since they will boost your immune system and give you the energy to live through the season. Winter doesn’t have to look dull anymore.
