By Kefilwe Mphake nland school calendar for the 2022 academic year commenced on 12 January with the Gauteng Provincial Government leaders paying special visits to various schools across the province as part of the Back-to-School campaign to assess school readiness in the province. MEC Mbali Hlophe accompanied by Lucky Lekgwathi, Thembinkosi Lorch, Mlungisi Mathe and Sibu Jili paid a special visit to Tlhatlogang Junior Secondary School, Rebone Primary School and Asha Monica ECD Centre in Soweto. The campaign gained partnerships with companies such as Canon SA coming in to donate printing equipment to the schools and offering schools picture day for all learners at Tlhatlogang and Rebone at no cost to the schools nor the learners. Exodus Wholesale and Retail also supported the initiative by donating some learning materials to the ECD centre. MEC also planted some trees at the schools and donated a mobile library with books as well as sporting attire for Tlhatlogang Junior Secondary School and Rebone Primary School. MEC Hlophe congratulated the school for being one of the top achieving schools in the country for its 95 percent pass rate. In her words of encouragement to the learners, MEC¬¬ Mbali said: “It takes dedication and discipline to realise your greatest expression and highest potential of yourself in life.” She further touched on the plans to bring back Schools Wednesday League which seeks to groom learners’ talents within the school premise whether it’s in sports or arts to unearth the learners’ potential to transform the socio-economic status of our communities.

A MUSEUM FOR

HIP-HOP TO THRIVE By Kefilwe Mphake inister Nathi Mthethwa accompanied by Ritual Media Group, Museum Africa and the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation hosted a media launch of the South African Hip Hop Museum on 3 February 2022 to help preserve the country’s hip hop culture.

The museum situated inside Museum Africa in Newtown, is still work in progress which seeks to profile, preserve and promote the South African hip-hop history and serve as a enabling environment to drive education and empowerment for hip hop creatives to showcase their talent. The facility amongst others, is fitted with a music recording and film-editing studio which will help to generate revenue for the museum to contribute towards its sustainability. MEC Mbali Hlophe said this partnership will finally solidify the movement because hip-hop has changed so many lives by giving young people a medium to express themselves. Ritual Media Group Founder, Somic Menoe explained how the museum was started with profits made from Back to the City, the biggest hip-hop festival in Africa. He further explained that at some point, him and other founders of the museum had to take money from their own pocket just to make it a success. “This partnership comes to us at the right time where we are reaching out to the sector stakeholders to ensure that we have sustainable kind of plan for this economy. We are committed and each time we interact with you we become even more committed because of how you are passionate about this project,” said Minister Mthethwa. A budget of R50 million has been allocated to the National Department of Sports, Arts and Culture which will be shared between the SA Hip-Hop Museum, District Six and Phansi Museum in Durban.

eam Gauteng was sent off to the National School Sport Championships in Bloemfontein where they competed against players from across the country in Tennis, Chess and Football. The National School Sport Championships is the bedrock of sport development and remains the premier event in the South Africa school sport sector. Rising stars were recognised with trophies and medals. Most importantly is the soccer champions of Pan Africa Championships who proceeded to represent South Africa in Democratic Republic of Congo on 17-21 February 2022. Team Gauteng’s Clapham High School and Rosina Sedibane Sport School fought through to the finals where they lost their chance to go to DRC.

THE KYALAMI 9 HOUR MAKES A GRAND RETURN

By Vinolia Chere and Kefilwe Mphake EC Mbali Hlophe went on a tour for this season’s Joburg Kyalami 9 Hour which took place from 3-5 February 2022 at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit.

The race made a return in 2022 - rescheduled from December 2021, as the final round of the 2021 Intercontinental GT Challenge – The qualifiers took place on Friday the 4th, followed by race day on the 5th February 2022. MEC Mbali Hlophe said: “We are more than happy to host an event of this magnitude, being part of the journey, it’s great to watch how it has grown in popularity but most importantly just the transformation aspects they bring and how they want to make sure that they introduce as many young people as possible to racing. This is great to see because we are bringing all the big names, the big cars, and great viewing and we know that it has a developmental aspect which we love to see in government.” The Kyalami 9 Hour saw history made by the first ever All Black African team competing for the Intercontinental GT Championship with Xolile Letlaka coming out in 3rd place at the finals.

Annual dialogue to empower young women to take control and tell their own story in sport By Godfrey Pitje

he 6th edition of the annual Gauteng Women In Sport Dialogue took place seeking to guide young women in the sports industry as they navigate their way through the dynamic sporting landscape under the ‘new normal’ of COVID-19 and the digital climate. Highlighting and reflecting on the outstanding achievements of women in sport in conjunction with the transfer of skills and knowledge from veterans to up and coming women sports professionals, further builds on efforts to unearth the full potential for the participation and success of women in all spheres of the sports fraternity.

The dialogue was held on Saturday, 12 February 2022, at the Vaal University of Technology, hosted by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation. The 2022 session was facilitated under the theme “Building Her Resilience for a New Normal in the Sport Industry”, with the aim to provide a platform to uplift women and girls excelling in sport by linking them with Captains of Industry, transcending barriers affecting women and girls excelling in sports and applying collective knowledge and insight for their advancement in participation. Prominent speakers on the day shared their experiences and best practice advices on achieving success in their realm within the sport industry including Zenobia Sithole, Dr Koketjo Tsebo, Dorah Mngwevu and more.

Topics of discussion focussed on the impact of COVID-19 on women in sport, mental health, personal growth, brand development and the role of digital platforms in capturing and commercialising the narratives of women in sport.

“Skills and knowledge sharing are critical for development, making interactive and inclusive engagements such as this dialogue greatly needed to provide insight and opportunities for Gauteng women and girls participating in sport” says MEC Mbali Hlophe.

Gauteng making inroads on transforming participation in Theatre and film production

By Mpolokeng Moloi undreds of women in Gauteng are ready to take on roles previously dominated by male counterparts in the theatre and film production space. Through an annual Basetsana Script Writing and Directing programme targeting women and the LGBTIQ+ community workshops have been held in various parts of the province with the most recent having taken place in Bronkhortspruit. The week-long workshop marked 13 years this year since the inception of this programme. Hosted by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, the programme seeks to assist in transforming theatre by getting women and members of the LGBTIQ+ community to write, direct and produce theatre and film pieces. The programme is opened to persons from age of 18 years and above. This year’s highlight was having a 75-year-old participant, Ms. Ngubane from Thokoza, Ekurhuleni. The workshop was facilitated by seasoned and highly acclaimed individuals including Nomveliso Tshabalala, who are experienced in the scriptwriting and directing field. Through their expertise, these facilitators created a pool of skilled and knowledgeable writers and directors in the province. MEC Mbali Hlophe says: “The Basetsana Scriptwriting and Directing Workshop is one of the most ambitious programmes aimed at transforming theatre by getting more women and the LBTQI+ community to write, direct and produce theatre pieces. It seeks to change the norm from having women only involved as assistants or in acting, makeup artistry or wardrobe roles.” “Women are needed at the forefront of writing, directing and developing new content. Through this initiative, we provide women and members of the LGBTQI+ community scriptwriting and directing entrants into the industry, particularly those from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.” added MEC Hlophe. 16
