Government on commemoration of Mandela Day
O
n 18 July, South Africa joined the global community in commemorating Nelson Mandela International Day. The intention behind Mandela Day is to celebrate former President Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy and to recommit to his call to build a caring and better world. Many spent the day by doing something that will make a difference in their communities and staying true to Madiba’s words that “it is in your hands to make of our world a better one for all”. This year’s Mandela Day was commemorated under the theme “One hand can feed another”. This theme was chosen to respond to the immediate challenges of families in our communities that cannot afford food and many other basic necessities as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The public was also encouraged to donate nonperishable food items to the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s #Each1Feed1 distribution network at all participating malls on Mandela Day. Participating malls have clearly marked signage and this initiative will run for a period of six months. This year’s commemoration comes as our government is taking appropriate measures to restore law and order following acts of public violence and destruction of property. President Cyril Ramaphosa described these acts as one of a “kind rarely seen in the history of our democracy”.
These acts threatens the integrity of our democratic and constitutional democracy based on justice, equality, the rule of law and fundamental human rights. As a nation we should not allow the violence to continue as it goes against our acclaimed Constitution - a lauded social contract to heal the division of our past. Those who have attempted to divide us have failed because South Africans are united in our diversity. Their attempts failed because of the efforts of our security forces, and it has failed because South Africans have rejected it and have stood up in defence of our hard-won democracy. For now, our priorities are to stabilise the country, to secure essential supplies and infrastructure, to provide relief and support recovery and rebuilding, to encourage the active efforts of citizens in defence of lives, livelihoods and democracy President Cyril Ramaphosa called on all South Africans to join the clean up on Nelson Mandela day. “This Sunday, South Africans will join people across the world in celebrating Nelson Mandela Day. As we reaffirm our commitment to our democracy, let us use Mandela Day to provide food to the most vulnerable in our society, to clean up our streets and to start the task of rebuilding”. We therefore appeal to all South Africans to use Mandela Day to lend a helping hand in our national effort to rebuild from public violence. There are no set rules, simply do any act of kindness that will positively impact communities affected by the violence. Every action counts, do something today for someone in your community to help rebuild South Africa.
You can encourage your friends to lend a hand in the #CleanUpSA initiative to clean up the damage caused by public violence or donate food to those in need. Community formations, NGOs and faith-based organisations can also help by ensuring that the destitute, and the needy are provided with basic necessities. Government salutes citizens and businesses who have come together to gather and share food and other essentials to those affected by violence. These patriotic deeds are a true reflection of our character as a nation and it is this spirit which gives us hope for the future and with which we can build our future together. As part of the rebuilding initiative, stakeholders in the agriculture value chain have committed to work together with government in responding to the challenges related to the food supply chain. Government assures all South Africans that we have sufficient food supplies in the country and the immediate problem in supply chains in KwaZulu-Natal are receiving urgent attention. We can restore our nation by helping one person at a time. Every action we take has a knock-on effect, which will soon snowball into rebuilding our nation. It is through this united front that we can build stronger communities and stronger societies. As we celebrate the life and legacy of Madiba, we should remember his powerful words when he said, “our nation comes from a history of deep division and strife; let us never through our deeds or words, take our people back down that road”. We must never allow that to happen. Instead, we should unite to fight against all forms of violence including racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance in the country. As citizens we have a duty to fulfil the promise of building a united, non-racial, non-sexist and prosperous country in which all who live in it are treated fairly. We therefore call on all South Africans to defend our democracy and ensure that the principle of the rule of law prevails.

“As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality exist in our world, none of us can truly rest.” Nelson Mandela, Make Poverty History, London, 2005 he COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing crises and made it more challenging to meet the demands of social justice. This moment in history has come with the devastating loss of life, exposed the fragility of health systems and aggravated food insecurity for many communities. Millions of livelihoods have been lost, and people have become increasingly dependent on one another to survive.

According to Ipsos, “Almost half (46%) of adult South Africans surveyed in late 2020 said that their households often had to go to bed hungry during the Covid-19 pandemic as we did not have enough money for food”. However, as dire as things seem, people in South Africa can be proud of our history and fearless culture of solidarity and coming together to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges. When we come together, we can achieve the impossible.

outh Africa is a nation that is perhaps best described as a nation borne out of solidarity. The means by which we overcame our troubled past was by each group working together towards a clear goal of justice. It is time, again, to ignite our culture of solidarity as we face the greatest test of our character and cohesion since the dawn of democracy. “The idea is for all South Africans to contribute to a food distribution network by donating to the Foundation. With our partners, we will be distributing food hampers to support families for a minimum of three months. ”
The national Covid-19 Response Command Centre announced a further two-week extension on the lockdown the nation is facing. Evidence shows that the lockdown has been effective in limiting the spread of the virus and is thereby saving lives and keeping hospitals functional during this time. The decision to extend the lockdown was taken to ensure the prevention of an utter and complete pandemic in South Africa.
– Feed 1 However, this will also mean that many families will not be able to make an income during this time – those who are precariously employed or earn a living under the no work no pay structure. Many South Africans are facing food insecurity at this time. It is our duty to ensure that our neighbours do not go hungry, and that we show solidarity to their cause.
By collaborating with old and new partners, the initiative is seeking to bring relief to the plight of food insecurity during and after the crisis we are facing due to the pandemic and the lockdown. The idea is for all South Africans to contribute to a food distribution network by donating to the Foundation. Employees: How to Cope with Job Stress and Build Resilience During the COVID-19 Pandemic hether you are going into work or working from home, the COVID-19 pandemic has probably changed the way you work. Fear and anxiety about this new disease and other strong emotions can be overwhelming, and workplace stress can lead to burnoutexternal icon. How you cope with these emotions and stress can affect your well-being, the well-being of the people you care about, your workplace, and your community. During this pandemic, it is critical that you recognize what stress looks like, take steps to build your resilience and manage job stress, and know where to go if you need help.

- Know the common work-related factors that can add to stress during a pandemic: - Concern about the risk of being exposed to the virus at work - Taking care of personal and family needs while working - Managing a different workload - Lack of access to the tools and equipment needed to perform your job - Feelings that you are not contributing enough to work or guilt about not being on the frontline - Uncertainty about the future of your workplace and/or employment - Learning new communication tools and dealing with technical difficulties - Adapting to a different workspace and/or work schedule
FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO BUILD RESILIENCE AND MANAGE JOB STRESS. - Communicate with your coworkers, supervisors, and employees about job stress while maintaining social distancing (at least 6 feet). • Identify things that cause stress and work together to identify solutions. • Talk openly with employers, employees, and unions about how the pandemic is affecting work. Expectations should be communicated clearly by everyone. • Ask about how to access mental health resources in your workplace. • - Identify those things which you do not have control over and do the best you can with the resources available to you. - Increase your sense of control by developing a consistent daily routine when possible — ideally one that is similar to your schedule before the pandemic. • Keep a regular sleep scheduleexternal icon. • Take breaks from work to stretch, exercise, or check in with your supportive colleagues, coworkers, family, and friends. • Spend time outdoors, either being physically active or relaxing. • If you work from home, set a regular time to end your work for the day, if possible. • Practice mindfulness techniquesexternal icon. • Do things you enjoy during non-work hours. • - Know the facts about COVID-19. Be informed about how to protect yourself and others. Understanding the risk and sharing accurate information with people you care about can reduce stress and help you make a connection with others. -

Helping others improves your sense of control, belonging, and self-esteem. Look for safe ways to offer social support to others, especially if they are showing signs of stress, such as depression and anxiety. • - If you feel you may be misusing alcohol or other drugs (including prescription drugs) as a means of coping, reach out for help. - If you are being treated for a mental health condition, continue with your treatment and be ware of any new or worsening symptoms.

WHO IS NOKWANDA ZWANE? I am young adult friendly to everyone, I love my work whole heartedly and when things get tough, I let go of control and flow with rhythm of life. I bring peace into my life. WHEN DID YOU JOIN THE DEPARTMENT AND WHAT ARE YOU RESPONSIBLE FOR? I joined the Department in 2019 for a two-year contract as an EPWP beneficiary but I served mine a year. Initiated my work experience at Recreation directorate, with God’s grace I then became an intern under GCRA (Gauteng Council Region Academy) as I studied Journalism, I was placed in the Communications Directorate. My responsibilities include Media monitoring, assist in developing media releases, advisories and statements and liasing with media houses to update our media database. WHAT’S YOUR SECRET TALENT THAT NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT? I am the best singer that can obtain a golden ticket from Idols. WHAT’S THE CRAZIEST THING YOU’VE EVER DONE? During lockdown I was still on the road after curfew time, so the time I was close to my house I heard the siren, when I saw it was the police van I ran away hid on the longest tree. Unfortunately the police saw me and they stopped the van, brightly flashed lights on me pulled off their gun and said I must come out. Then I had to apologise as I didn’t have a permit. The police officer said "Evacute" I ran for my life, it was like a movie scene.
JULY IS MANDELA MONTH, WHAT IS YOUR UNDERSTANDING ABOUT THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MANDELA DAY It is a reminder of how much I should be grateful for as I am a free human being and with that I should just take a few minutes to show my gratitude by making a difference in someone's life or in my community. As Tata Madiba said "What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead." WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO AND WHY? Thando Thabethe inspires me I love every fibre of her being, she is mentally rich. Besides, I am such a "waze wamuhle, unuka kamnandi" type of a person, male or female. I enjoy passing compliments to others and seeing their faces light up and adapt the good I see in them just gives me peace. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? I do face-beat makeup just to take selfies. I am an extrovert so I like to hang out with friends. ANY FUTURE PLANS? (SBWL BEING) Financial stability, a permanent government communicator. I’d like to be the face of Mac make-up, home owner, having multiple streams of income, married as the universe has favoured me in my love path, it is sweeter, straight like a ruler and warm as a heater.

ith the COVID 19 pandemic still disrupting lives and claiming some, it is everyone’s responsibility to observe the necessary infection safety control measures. It has become necessary for us all to have our face masks on every time we are in public, so we can protect ourselves and those around us from this killer virus.

This also means that the chances of getting exposed to the virus are getting higher. Facemasks have become a cohesive part of our fashion sense. While you have to wear a mask to keep yourself and others safe from the disease, you don’t have to look like a clown. Here are seven ways you can look chic with a mask on.

1. Get Yourself a Quality Mask A quality mask ensures the utmost protection from the virus. It should be comfortable, so you don’t have to keep feeling like you should take it off. hen I was little I was sick a lot. I was treated with a mix of antibiotics and homemade remedies, and seriously I don’t know what was worse. One one hand there were big pills that I could barely swallow on the other hand there was an onion syrup. It was yuck! Stinky little thing.

Now I’m an adult, and I’m back to making my own onion syrup. How ironic it is? I’m really fed up with over-the-counter remedies. It is easy to take them like candy with no thought what-so-ever what do they really do to my body. They often don’t even seem to work, or they are packed with sugar. And often we have brilliant remedies just sitting on the counter, so I’m turning into alternatives, learning about herbs and making my nightmare syrup.
So how does the syrup work? You will only need three ingredients – onion, honey and lemon and 24 hours. Onion has been traditionally used for coughs for hundreds of years. It has expectorating qualities, and that means it helps you cough up phlegm. So you should use the syrup when you either have an unproductive cough (when your chest feels heavy, but you can’t cough out what’s there) or a productive cough (when you cough up phlegm, and the syrup will help you to do it more efficiently). Honey will soothe your throat, and it also has antiviral and antibacterial qualities. And lemon is mostly for flavor. If you don’t like the smell just try to hold your nose when you taking it. And get better.

Onion syrup - homemade cough remedy Ingredients 2 onions juice of 1 lemon 10 Tbsp honey Directions Prepare a clean medium jar. Peel and roughly chop onions. Mix lemon juice with honey and pour it over the onions. Close the jar and leave for a day in a warm place. Pass it through a sieve. Usage Drink one tablespoon 2-4 times a day.
