The British Independent Film Festival Brief

Background

Considerations

Target Audience & Tone of Voice

Re-brand The British Independant Film Festival to raise awareness of the Independant Film Industry and celebrate young talent to a more contemporary audience.

The Festival is running on a very low-budget, as is the Industry. The lack of funding means that not many people in England are aware of Independant Film and the Heritage of it in this country.

Consider what will help to re-connect the target audience with the History and Culture of British Film, and where this be might be placed to engage fully with the correct types of people.

Young, Cultured, Creatives. 18-30. Mainly British & European Intriguing & Spontaeous,Informative & Educational through the use of British Humour to connect with the auidence.

Concept, Brand & Identity

Concept My main concept was to connect with the British audience by trying to make them proud of their country, their roots and most importantly British Film. This was a concious decision from the back of the summer olympics, which really transformed the country through sport, my idea was to emulate this, on a smaller scale, using Independent Film.

Logo, Colour & Type This is why I used the ‘We are’ concept to link classic British things to Film and to also used cockney rhyming slang and a converstational tone, with hints of British Sarcasm which is very common of the British poulation. Hopefully this will directly realte to people making them instantly warm to the brand.

The logo itself was heavilly influenced by the BBFC classification system, which are often found in a square box. I also wanted to frame to logo in this box, to emphasise the fact that it was film, which is always found within a frame. The logo will be accompanied by the full title of the festival as a secondary logo and the colour scheme was chosen to not only instantly stand out, but also directly relates to the heritage of British Independent Film within the Punk cultures.

Production

Most of my products were create during a combination of the flourescent pink coloured stock, white stock, white vinyl and a standard inkject black print. This seemed to work well across the whole range allowing me to give each peice a sense of uniqueness whilst also fitting within the brand.

I used a variety of different formats and techniques relating to my initial research. This was so I could create unique, innovative and interesting products on such a low budget. Here you can see different folding, binding and perforating techniques.

ID Tag, Tickets, Wristband & Research Book

I tried to push the format and range of products as far as I possibly could, creating a lanyard with tag, perforated and hole punched tickets as well as wristbands.

My research book, which you can see in the end images, tied directly into my products and whole brand. I wanted the whole range of products to have a strong look which was instantly recognisable, and I believe i’ve achieved that.

Award, Nominations, Red Carpet, Keyring, Staff Tee

I extended the product range further when it came to branding the award ceremony as well as the festival itself. I created The award itself by using glossy black acrylic and laser cutting techniques. I used a strong glue and metal wiring to suspend the ‘B’ in the centre and create a spinnable mechanism to the award. This was accompanied by the nominations card which was also foiled and embossed to add a touch of class.

As I really enjoyed the outcome of this award, I created a smaller version which could be sold as a keyring. Using smaller wiring, the spinning mechanism worked great. A T-shirt was also created using iron-on neon pink t-shirt vinyl. This give the bright glossy look which unfortunatly couldn’t be achieved by screen printing. This could be worn by Staff or sold inthe gift shop.

Wayfinding, Iconography & Anamorphic Type

Moving on from the product range, I also looked into how the festival could physically work on a large scale. This included Wayfinding, Signage and Iconography, as well proposals for the usage of anamorphic imagery across walls of the festival.

I wanted to continue this conversational humorous british tone throughout all aspects of the wayfinding using various slang terms realting to sections of the interior. For example, the cloakroom will host the phrase ‘drop off you tennis racquets* here’, with the translation of *coats and jackets.

I also created a range of icons which will hopefully make the wayfinding systems easier to understand for guests fo the festival. I wanted to keep the icons simple, with bold lines, to relate to the brand and whole identity.

Promotion

There was two main promotional concepts that I used for the festival with the intentions that they could be built on in future year on year. The first was the ‘We are’ idea which was using simple type with a concerstational tone to instantly draw people in. For the finished poster, I laser cut the type out of a thick white stock and mounted this on top of the neon pink stock.

The second concept was to use classic and iconic British Film stills to create a three dimensional collage which included the brand logo and colour. By using collage this gave the impression that the characters was actually sat within the logo The finals were created by hand collaging, re-photographing and re-printed to get the three dimensional qualities which was important to it’s success.

Website

The brand and aolcour scheme was prominant when it come to designing and coding my website. I wanted the web elements to have a similar impact on the user as to all the physical projects. Because of this, I used the neon pink colour as the backdrop with elements of white and black layered on top in the form of imagery and type.

The layout was quite neat and tidy. The website needed to be informative and easy to navigate as well as having instant asthetic qualities. I made the layout consitant throughout every page, creating areas which could be changeable with different information.

I used JQuery in the coding to achieve a moving slideshow at the top of the page, and a working blog which can be regularly updated, if the website was to go live.
