____Embossing

My 5 Booklets are colour co-ordinated to fit each of the themes set. They also follow the gamut of the colour wheel which is relevant to the colour topics raised inside. This will help the books fit together as a set but also be easily distinguishable from each other. The front covers of the books will be plain and I will embossing them with the title of the book, in my chosen typeface, rasionne.

I will construct a case from a thick stable stock that can hold the weight of all 5 books. I also plan on embossing this case using the same technique as the book. I will refer back to my embossing samples to see which effect I will need to take.

As you can see from my samples, I am planning to emboss both the front cover of the booklets as well as the sides and spine of my casing. This will add definition to the books, keep them together as a set and also relate to the print processes involved in the content of the book.

I will be sending my books of to print which will be perfect bound, with a glossy front cover and full colour matt pages.

I wanted to keep the printing process diagrams as simple as possible but with no confusion. This was hard to get a balance but I think these have come out succesfully. I wanted each diagram to be consistant which is why the angle of the process is exaclty the same for each one. I used other diagrams and sources for reference and sketch out these set of diagrams to help back up my content.

To keep with the simple, consistant theme, I decided to create the binding method diagrams from a front on view. This was, each diagram can be similar to each other but also easy to understand the method and to distinguish from the other illustrations.

I kept all the diagrams similar to help keep a consistant theme throughout all publications but also to keep them simple enough to understand and to not overload with infomation. As you can see here, I created diagrams for all books including, printing processes, binding techniques, paper sizes, artwork and colour.

____Typefaces Used

I wanted to keep the layout fairly consistant throughout all of my booklets but differing slighlty with the layout and colour depending on the content of the booklet. I liked the idea of using a mixture of full colour images with monotone and also black and white halftones images because this fit well with my ‘overlayed’ style as well as relating to various elements of the content.

Overall my layout is quite simple and easy to follow as well as being quite contemporary. I tried to keep the information from becoming boring so this is where the placment of type and image become key in my layout. Each layout fit well with it’s chosen scheme and I used this ‘sliced’ type that I generated to help the page headers stand out but remain contemporary. I used ‘Raisonne’ for the headers and Helvetica for the easy reading bodycopy.

___Final Mock Ups

My intial ideas was to split the content into three books which would be Print Processes and Finsihes, Colour and Artwork and Stock, Binding and Cost. I then decided to split it down further into 6 booklets under the same headings.

I experimented with a few different designs before settling with my simple resolved A5 format. This got the best feedback in the intial crit with the ‘sliced type’ so this is the direction that I took.

I spent quite a lot of time developing the result of my embossing for the package and the front covers. I played around with different stocks, pressure of emboss, wetness of stock and time left under the press before settling on my final result of off-white watercolour paper which gives the feel of the packet a lot more texture. I initially lasercut peices of wood to create the makeshift embossing templates.

I mocked up both the packaging box and the booklets in black and white. This can give me a final look at what my info pack will look like. On the final mock-ups, I will highlight any last minute changes to the books which will make it so much easier to make them before sending to print.

I wanted the layout to be quite contempoary but also simple enough to easily follow when I, or even other people, would be using it as reference. I wanted to imprint my personal style into the work too.
