In April 2012, the Idea Generation gallery in Shoreditch, London exhibited around 700 unique seven-inch sleeves created by artists and designers from all around the world. The art was inspired by tracks from The Cure, Florence + The Machine, Bombay Bicycle Club, CSS, DJ Shadow, Noah & The Whale and Ben Howard. This was part of the project, Secret 7”, hosted by Talenthouse. The exhibition had an added air of mystery as no-one knew who designed each sleeve, or which of the seven tracks was housed inside. I designed for the band CSS and track ‘City Girl’. The band then went on to sign the sleeve and it was sold for £40 on the day of the exhibition with all proceeds going to Teenage Cancer Trust.

____Design My design was influenced by collage and vintage photography. I used a photograph of my mum which was taken by my dad in the late 1970’s when they had just moved from a small town to a city. The name of the CSS song on the record is called ‘City Grrrl’. I sliced the image up and collaged to create the album art. I used a couple of images but chose the one on the left to send off to talenthouse.

____Design This was the final proposal for the 7 sleeve. It was an important part of the brief that there was no informtation about the band or song on the cover, as the idea is that each one was be sold secretly as a surprise to whoever picks it up. They would only know who the band is when placed onto a record player.

In April 2013, The event is being held again, and is again raising money for the Teenage Cancer trust through art, which is amazing. This year, I managed to design for the band Public Enemy and their legendary track ‘Harder Than You Think’, which was the soundtrack to the paralympics last summer. I was lucky enough to be selected by the band and again, this will be signed by the artist and will be sold for £40 with all proceeds going to charity.

____Influence This year I was designed for a completely different style than last year and i took direct influence from 90’s hip Hop and 90’s fashion. I wanted to use the infamous ‘Flava Flav’ Clock as an iconic bold symbol in the design and I also wanted to experiment with bold colours and patterns which was used both in design and fashion at the time. I wanted to take all of this and put my own contemporary twist on the design.

____Poster Insert I decided to send a poster along with my entry to the guys at Secret 7”. This way, they can fold this up and slip it inside the vinyl as an extra gift to whoever spends £40 on my vinyl. This is a typography driven poster using the lyrics in the song and based around 90’s kitch style, fashion and Hip Hop.
