Riders compete for recognition and prizes and most of all MONEY. Camaraderie ~ Everyone will have a great time hanging out with their friends and make new friends. We want to see horse and rider perform to their best and be encouraged all along the way. Fort Custer Horse Friends Association is a non-profit (501-c-3) equine trail club that works with the DNR to maintain and improve the trails for everyone. What year was the association founded? Non-profit status since 2000, founded in 1997. What is the average number of members? 80 Does your membership run January to December? Yes. What breed/discipline does the association focus on? We welcome all breeds to enjoy our trails. What events do you hold each year? Two annual campouts, one in May and one in September. We also have ride/potlucks and trail work days. Where are they normally held? Campouts are at the Whitford Lake Event Area in the Fort Custer Recreation Area. The ride/potlucks and work days are at the equestrian trail head. Do your shows have a Nat’l affiliation? N/A Is there a youth or amateur division? N/A Are there daily high points or year end awards? N/A Do you have an annual banquet? Yes, our annual Christmas Party is held in December.

Hungerford Trail Riders Association ‘Dedicated to preserve, protect and expand the equine network’ http://www.hungerfordtrailriders.org/ Hungerford Trail Riders Association (HTRA) is a 501c3 non-pro it organization registered with the IRS. The majority of the association membership include horse enthusiasts from the West Michigan region; but certainly has drawn members throughout Michigan and surrounding states. Our purpose is to enhance & protect horse trails, increase rider participation, encourage volunteers; and provide activities for members and friends to network, while utilizing the trail system. Hungerford is operated by the HuronManistee National Forest and is located approximately seven miles West of Big Rapids, Michigan. Members maintain over 51 miles of beautiful horse trails situated on over 6,500 acres of National Forest System lands. Scenic trails go through heavily forested areas of oak, maple, aspen, and red and white pine. Parts of the trails are suitable for less experienced riders, while other segments offer a more challenging experience. The Beaver Pond located West of Hungerford, is a perfect spot for your horses to take a drink. Memberships include an annual or a life-long membership, which allows the association to work in conjunction with the forest service for trail maintenance, campground improvements and enhancements; along with programming. The by-laws for MHDVA states, in part, that it shall be the purpose of the association to aim for the preservation and maintenance of carriages; carriage literature and related items; the exchange of information regarding horse drawn vehicles and the development of the driving horse; to serve as an accurate and technical source of information for the benefit of its members and the general public; to encourage the use of carriages and other animal-drawn vehicles for the promotion of public interest in their contributions to our cultural, social and economic history; and promote knowledge of, and safety in, horse related activities. Each Membership year is from January 1st to December 31st. New memberships are $35.00. Renewal memberships are $25.00 until March 31 of the year following expiration and then will be $35.00. If your membership has expired in a previous year, you will need to pay $35.00 to renew, but you may retain your former MTRA number. All memberships (individual/family) are “conditional” until approved by the Board of Directors. All “Family Memberships” include husband, wife and children under the age of 18. Pinckney Trail Riders Association (PTRA) is a 501c3 non-profit corporation registered with the Internal Revenue Service and the Michigan Attorney General’s office as a charitable organization. Our purpose is to improve, protect, maintain and expand the horse trails in the Pinckney Recreation Area and surrounding areas for use by horsemen and women, their families and the general public for horseback riding, horse camping and horse related activities. Further goals are to establish and maintain a good working relationship with Michigan DNR personnel and to assist them in their efforts to maintain adequate campgrounds and riding trails. Pinckney Trail Riders Association is recognized as a Friends Group of the DNR. As such, PTRA participates with DNR sponsored equine related activities and has other related equine input. PTRA also regularly provides the DNR with our Volunteer Hours Log, where volunteer names and hours are recorded. Since May, 2009 PTRA volunteers have put in over 1,000 recordable hours. PTRA provides our members with the opportunity to connect with fellow equestrians via our Facebook page and email groups (must be a member to receive the benefit of email group participation). Members also enjoy the many activities planned each year including, but not limited to educational seminars, clinics, picnics, connection with fellow equestrians and other trail groups with information sharing. PTRA encourages our youth to become involved with horses by exposing them to riding and horses. One way PTRA does this is through community events such as the Annual Kids’ Day at the Ranch, held in July and made possible through the support of member sponsorships. PTRA raises funds through donations which are tax deductible, annual flower sales in March, and membership dues to hire contract labor for heavy trail maintenance. Periodic work bees are held for additional maintenance work with cooperation of other user groups (i.e., running and hiking groups). PTRA encourages cooperation between different user groups. Although we support horseback riding, we also know there are those who do not ride but still support the idea of having open space where the public can go and enjoy the beauty of nature. Your membership can help us to protect the land without ever having “sat on a horse”.

The Pontiac Lake Recreation Area, located in White Lake Twp. in Southeast Michigan features 17 miles of bridle trails throughout the park. Bridle trails are maintained by the Pontiac Lake Horseman’s Association.

Pontiac Lake Horseman’s Association Making a difference for the future at Pontiac Lake State Recreation Area Pontiac Lake Recreation Area Equestrian Staging Areas and Horseman’s Campground are located off Teggerdine Road in beautiful White Lake Township. 3,800 acres of rolling woodland glacial terrain supports a variety of activities at the park. The designated horse trails are open year round and the area habitat is a mixture of marshes, meadows and old hardwood forest that offer equestrians some of the best trail riding in Southeast Michigan and is also the home to the headwaters for the Huron River. The rustic horse only campground is open May to October and offers 25 rustic sites with a self-registration center, a hand pump and a vault toilet. The day staging area located off Teggerdine Road, between White Lake Road and Pontiac Lake Road is open year round with access to the horse trails. YANKEE SPRINGS TRAIL RIDERS ASSOCIATION MISSION STATEMENT The purpose of the Yankee Springs Trail Riders Association is to preserve, protect, improve and expand existing horse campgrounds and the horse trail network in the Yankee Springs Recreation Area, and the surrounding areas, for use by horsemen, their families and the general public for horse riding and camping. To develop and maintain good communications and working relationships with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Division, and/or its successors. To assist them in their efforts to maintain adequate horse campgrounds and riding trails and to help generate revenue that will enable horse campgrounds to become self-supporting. To promote horse riding and camping by providing information to the general public on the location of horse campground facilities, horse trails and the recreational benefits available. Our Association was founded in 1989 by a group of riders that had been using the trails for quite some time. They decided that much more could be accomplished by organizing, and we have grown to over a hundred family memberships since then. We are a calendar year organization, offering family membership of $20.00 that runs from Jan. 1st to Dec. 31st. We also offer a lifetime membership as well. As a trail riding group we try to have at least 3 events per year, one being a fundraiser for another nonprofit organization, such as Cancer Families United. We also like to have a kid’s FREE event once a year and then a club fund raiser for improvement's to camp and trails. Our events are held at our Horseman’s Campground on Duffy Road in the Yankee Springs Recreation Area. Our monthly meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday of every month, usually with a potluck and the meeting to follow. Except for our annual banquet meeting, which is subject to new time and location as the board sees to change each year. Newsletters are biannual. YSTRA will continue to improve and create more equestrian trails for our trail system with the help of our public land managers. In 2016 YSTRA became an official friends group of the Yankee Springs Horseman’s Camp. We will continue to work to improve the campground and possibly bring electricity to our horse camp one day. NO HORSE REQUIRED Don’t have a horse? That’s okay. No horse experience? That’s okay too. You just need to be interested in and love horses, that’s all it takes! Volunteering is a great way to learn about horses, no matter your age or experience level. There’s always something to do to help out!
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Volunteering your time can be a rewarding experience. Meet people with the same interests as yourself, and make wonderful, lasting relationships. If you don’t have the time, become a member of one or more horse or trail riding associations, financial assistance is always welcome.
