Johor Bahru is poised to become a vital gateway between Malaysia and Singapore, creating new opportunities for growth and development in the region. However, the urban condition in the area surrounding the CIQ complex presents a significant challenge. The daily movement of 350,000 people creates air and sound pollution, leading to discomfort and stress. Any new development must address these issues to avoid a negative impact on Johor Bahru’s urban quality and brand equity.

To respond to these challenges, a new structure is proposed that features a smooth, flowing form that stands in contrast to the existing buildings. The design takes inspiration from Johor’s Tenun Johor weaving tradition, featuring dramatic arcs that resemble the movements of a Zapin dancer’s clothing. The building will serve as an iconic symbol of Johor and Malaysia, with its unique design welcoming incoming trains from Singapore and soaring into a 20m high dome at the arrival platform. The plan also includes ample tree planting to create a welcoming environment for new arrivals. By addressing the urban challenge in this way, Johor Bahru can continue to grow and develop as a vital hub in the Asia Pacific region.
