n the inaugural year of our service on the Board, AUTO is unveiling the first AUTO Guidebook titled DISCOVER UGANDA dedicated to serving the interests of tour operators. This guidebook will take a pivotal step in showcasing Uganda’s tourism potential. It is launched to help our members to reach their clients, elevate the Uganda tourism industry and provide AUTO members with new marketing tools and information on new markets for our common good.

Its economy is humming again and its people are thriving in a peaceful land with rich harvests and today, Uganda is drawing regional and foreign tourists once again and it fast developing as the new kid on the block in the wildlife safari experience.

Key amongst these has been restocking and protecting the wildlife and the national parks to ensure that the wildlife that was killed or poached during the tumultuous period are restored. Today, Uganda has an incredible wildlife variety and this has earned the destination one of the best emerging safari destinations in the world. Moreover, Uganda boasts an incredible array of landscapes that range from the snowcapped Rwenzori Mountain range popularly known as the Mountains of the Moon to the majestic hills and valleys of the Kidepo Valley National Park, arguably Uganda’s ultimate wildlife safari destination. AUTO ELECTS NEW BOARD The Association of Uganda Tour Operators, Uganda’s leading tourism trade association went to the polls in July 2014 to elect a new team to steer the organization to new heights. Mrs. Babra Vanhelleputte was voted Board Chair. Before assuming the new office, Babra served as Vice Chair with Mr. Bonifence Byamukama as Chairman. Seven other tour operators were elected to the board to serve for 2 years. These are Jackie Rubuubi of Platinum Tours and Travel Ltd as Vice Chair, Dennis Ntege of Adrift East Africa as Board Secretary, Costantino Tessarin of Destination Jungle Ltd as Treasurer and Felex Musinguzi of
Kazinga Tours Ltd, Rashid Kiyimba of Brovad Tours & Travel, Dona Tindyebwa of Jewel Safaris Ltd and Gary Segal of The Uganda Safari Company as committee members. AUTO brings together all tour operators in Uganda. While accepting her new position as Board Chair to the board of AUTO Mrs. Vanhelleputte promised transparency in her governance and vowed to “represent AUTO with distinction and continue to work with members and other tourism stakeholders to drive forward the tourism agenda of Uganda.”
AUTO MEMBERS TO EXCLUSIVELY SELL GORILLA PERMITS Ugandan registered tour operators have been granted exclusive rights to access, view and sell online gorilla permits. The new directive announced by Uganda’s Ministry of Tourism will go a long way in strengthening the bargaining power of Ugandan-registered tour operators who will further help promote and market other tourist attraction sites in Uganda. According to the Association of Uganda Tour Operators (AUTO), the new move will also ensure that Ugandan tour operators do not
lose out as would have been the case had access to the permits been made available to everyone as tour operators from abroad would have sold the gorilla packages without benefiting Ugandan tour operators. AUTO is Uganda’s leading tourism trade association, with membership of over 150 companies offering special interest safaris, air safaris, incentive travel group safaris, and custom safaris for individual and group travellers as welll as camping safaris both budget and luxury.

UGANDA TRAVEL INFORMATION
VISAS Ugandan visas are issued at Ugandan High Commissions and Embassies abroad and also at all Entry/Exit Points. The Uganda Visa Policy uses the principle of reciprocity, which means that all nations that require Ugandans to have visas are consequently visa prone in Uganda. Visa Fees: Single Entry for 3 months US$50; Multiple Entry for 6 months US$100; Inland Transit US$50; Uganda also issues the East African Borderless Visa which allows movement in Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda unlike the Uganda visa that can only be used for travel in Uganda. GETTING TO UGANDA: BY PLANE Uganda is a landlocked country and access to the country is via the land borders or via the country’s principal airport at Entebbe International Airport. The airport is serviced by regional and international airlines that link Uganda to the region and the rest of the world. Major airlines that fly into Entebbe include Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, RwandAir, South African Airways, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, British Airways, Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Brussels Airlines and Egypt Air. BY CAR It is possible to overland into Uganda from neighbouring countries. Entry into Uganda from Kenya is via the Busia and Malaba border crossings while from Rwanda is mainly the Gatuna border crossing. A Carnet du Passage is required for private

vehicles, including motorcycles. These border points are open 24 hours-a-day. BY BUS If using public transport, there are numerous buses and public taxis that connect to Kampala from Nairobi in Kenya, Juba in South Sudan, Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, Kigali in Rwanda, Bujumbura in Burundi and Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The buses range from luxury coaches to the basic with varying fares. GET AROUND If local travel has not been pre-arranged with a tour company based in Uganda, there are plenty of ways of moving around within the major towns and from one town to the next.
The actual buses run less frequently within the city of Kampala, but mainly shuttle people to other towns in the provinces. They usually leave Kampala early in the morning. There are many companies which almost all leave from the same general area. Some roads outside of Kampala, especially in the rural areas are not paved. Domestic bus travel within Uganda is reasonable and cheap between major towns and is a good choice for backpackers with time. However, there are no established bus schedules so proper planning needs to be done for traveling outside Kampala BY PLANE Domestic flights might be a good and fast alternative to dusty bus rides.

BY TAXI
Boda bodas are motorcycle taxis. They are found in their hundreds in Kampala and other major tows. They are not only a cheap way of getting around, but also tend to be faster to get from one point of the town to the other.
The best way to get around Kampala and the neighbouring towns is by using minibus-type public taxis or matatus. This is the most efficient and cost-effective method of transportation in Kampala and other towns.
However, caution should be excised while taking these motorcycles as they are known to cause numerous accidents many of which have led to serious injury and even death. If you have to take one, better inform the rider to ride slowly.
The fares are normally written on the display boards placed on the roofs of the vans. Alternatively, it is recommended asking other passengers what the fare to your destination is to avoid being overcharged by the conductors.
BY BUS Uganda has a decent bus commuter system. There are two classes of buses. The public taxis which are also known as matatus just like in neighbouring Kenya. These are actually minibuses or commuter vans, which run fixed routes.
There are also private taxis, which are known to the locals as special hire taxis. They are also available within Kampala and other major towns. They do not have a fixed price and you have to negotiate the fare with the driver before embarking on the journey because private taxis in Uganda are not metered.
Single tourist visa: Things to note HOW WILL THE SINGLE TOURIST VISA BE ISSUED? It will be issued upon application at any of the diplomatic representations of Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda, at the Immigration offices of the respective countries or online, where applicable. WILL IT BE DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER VISAS KENYA, UGANDA, RWANDA ISSUE? The visas for specific countries cost $50 but allow the tourist entry into only that country. The EAC single tourist visa, however, works like the Schengen visa from European Union countries. The EAC single tourist visa therefore allows tourists to enter any of the three countries and move freely without having to apply or pay for another visa. The visa is a multiple-entry visa and costs $100 and is valid for 90 days and cannot be extended. Any gainful employment within East Africa on the EAC tourist visa is not allowed. WHAT PREVENTS ME FROM USING A VISA ISSUED BY ONE COUNTRY TO TRAVEL TO ANOTHER COUNTRY? Visas issued for a specific country are only used to travel to that country and not into any other EAC country. Should travel be required to a second or third country, then the traveller needs to apply for that country’s visa and pay the applicable fees. HOW WILL IT WORK WITHOUT STAMPING THEM? You will still be required to fill immigration forms where your length of stay in the neighbouring country will be indicated and it will be logged into the system. ARE THEY ALL NOW MACHINE-READABLE? Yes, the EAC visa is machine readable.

J
inja town sits some 80km east of Kampala and is regarded as the gateway to the Nile. Once an economic giant where Uganda’s manufacturing might was on the runway to take off, the town was turned into a pale shadow of its former self when economic disaster swept through under the reign of former strongman Idi Amin. But Jinja is rising and rising fast. The town is on track to implement a new tourism master plan that is set to place Jinja at the very heart of the tourism industry in Uganda. The town is one of the 10 tourism economic zones that have been identified by the Government of Uganda in its new tourism master plan. MARINE TOURISM Under the plan, Jinja will play a critical role in enhancing and developing a marine tourism sub-sector that will be around the River Nile. While Jinja does not enjoy white sandy beaches associated with other marine tourism destinations in East Africa such as Mombasa and Zanzibar, the town is gearing on maximizing on marine activities on the world’s longest river – the Nile. The plan is to also transform Jinja into a resort city that will welcome business travellers from the region and around the world for conferences on the banks of the Nile. The town will also attract high-end leisure tourists as there are plans of setting up a highend marina on the Lake Victoria. CONTROLLED DEVELOPMENT Physical planners for the project will control development of the new Jinja Resort City that will not have skyscrapers. All buildings in the town will be low-rise to not only enhance the aesthetic beauty of the resort city, but to also help provide clear views of the surrounding hills and landscape where
nature will not have to compete with a man-made concrete jungle of high-rise apartment and commercial buildings. The Jinja Sailing Club, once the best addresses to hang-out in while in Jinja, is also seeking to make a splash as there are plans to set up a new upmarket resort with world-class standards and services. The proposed resort is part of the Madhvani Group who intend of setting up a health club, a sailing or boating club, develop a golf course as well as start a sport-fishing venture at the proposed resort.

To drive marine tourism
WATER SPORTS Already there are some established water sports ventures on the Nile that include white-water rafting and bungee jumping. The 44-meter jump from above the Nile River is the only bungee jumping facility on the Nile. The white-water rafting experience on the Nile is considered as one of the best in the world. The Upper Nile, which includes sections from Jinja down to the Bujagali Falls are some of the raftable sections of the river. There are only two raftable river in Africa – the Nile and the Zanbezi in southern Africa. But the Nile has seven times the water volume found in the Zambezi and hence creates a much more thrilling rafting experience. Jinja offers some freshness and tranquillity that is hard to find in a bigger city like Kampala and with the setting up of the proposed Jinja Resort City under the master plan, Jinja will no doubt be a crowd puller for both business and leisure travellers coming to Uganda.

NATIONAL PARKS Uganda has ten national parks that offer a mix of wildlife experiences, some of which cannot be found anywhere else in East Africa. The parks offer the usual safari drives that afford one an encounter with members of the big five and tops this with what is regarded as a once-in-a-lifetime encounter tracking for the mountain gorillas. Uganda also offers, perhaps, of the most spectacular birding experience anywhere in the world. Moreover, the country plays host to more than 1,000 bird species, most of which are found within the bird-rich Albertine Rift which also boasts some endemic bird species that cannot be seen anywhere else in the world.

ganda’s remaining virgin wilderness has survived many threats. Conservationists have battled with poachers for decades but now the exploration for minerals by big companies is posing a danger. Sandwiched between a mountainous region where the borders of Kenya, Uganda and South Sudan intersect, lies what is today Uganda’s last remaining virgin wilderness. A safari paradise rated as amongst one of the best in Africa. A massive bowl of sun-kissed hills and valleys that open up into majestic wilderness of savannah, acacia, borassus palms and lots of sausage trees, whose alcoholic fruit is a delicacy for the large elephant herd that roams its plains. UGANDA’S BEST WILDLIFE SAFARI DESTINATION This is Kidepo Valley National Park - Uganda’s best wildlife safari destination. In 2013, the globally respected channel, CNN Travel voted the Kidepo Valley National Park Africa’s third best safari destination after Kenya’s Maasai Mara and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana. This is a massive statement for the park which just about two decades ago had its wildlife population decimated by an endless civil war that had rocked Uganda.
IN 2013, THE GLOBALLY RESPECTED CHANNEL, CNN TRAVEL VOTED THE KIDEPO VALLEY NATIONAL PARK AFRICA’S THIRD BEST SAFARI DESTINATION AFTER KENYA’S MAASAI MARA AND THE CENTRAL KALAHARI GAME RESERVE IN BOTSWANA
Today, the park scores highly as a wildlife safari destination due to its spectacular landscape, serenity and wildlife population. Moreover, thanks to concerted conservation efforts of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), the park’s elephant population is amongst the world’s fastest growing herd, this as massive poaching of the jumbos continues to be witnessed in other countries in Africa. The UWA, the agency mandated to protect and maintain Uganda’s national parks and game reserves is seeking to re-introduce other wildlife populations into the park that were killed or driven out of the park during the civil war. These include greater kudu, oryx and rhino. The park had healthy populations of the oryx and black rhino which were wiped out from the pack in the 1980s and early 1990s. LOCALS HELP IN CONSERVATION But what is also commendable in as far as wildlife conservation in Kidepo Valley National Park is concerned is that human-wildlife conflict is at the very minimum because the local people, mainly the Karamojong are known to zealously protect the wildlife in the park. The community even moved out of their villages so that the park’s boundaries could be extended.
Kidepo started off as a controlled hunting area for local communities in the early 1950s. The locals were careful not to kill female wild animals so as to allow reproduction. In the late 1950s, Kidepo was converted into a game reserve and in 1962, it became a national park. The park was expanded in 1963 when the local Karamojog people were asked to vacate their lands to make way for the park’s enlargement. The Karamojong were such avid wildlife conservationists that some were killed by poachers from the Toposa tribe from South Sudan and the Turkana from Kenya. The park honoured these gallant wildlife conservationists and defenders by erecting a cemetery in the park in honour of the brave Karamojong rangers who gave their lives to protect the wild game in the park. SPECTACULAR NATURAL BEAUTY While the park is situated more than 500km from Kampala, Uganda’s political and commercial capital, it offers a deeply rewarding experience for safari enthusiasts who make the journey north. Kidepo offers spectacular natural beauty due to its pristine wilderness and will impress anyone who ventures into its territory that has remained almost untouched for many years. The park is one of the most idyllic locations for anyone interested in experiencing a genuine wildlife safari in Uganda. This is because within the park’s boundaries are about 80 animal species 28 of whom are peculiar to Kidepo National Park only. Amongst some of the wildlife that can be seen in the park include a growing elephant population, a huge population of buffaloes and plain zebras and the kongoni. Predators in the park include the spotted hyenas, leopards, cheetahs and tree lions. The patas monkeys are the only primates found in the park. RICH BIRDLIFE The park has a recorded bird population of about 475 species and is only second to the Queen Elizabeth National Park in terms of bird species recorded. The park boasts some special bird species that cannot be found anywhere else in Uganda. These include some of the region’s rarest birds such as the black-breasted Barbet and the Karamoja Apallis. The park is composed of two valleys; Narus Valley and Kidepo Valley. However due to the varying amounts of rainfall received in these two locations, the vegetation and wildlife population in the park seems to vary between the two valleys.

racking the mountain gorillas in Uganda can be done in two national parks. These include the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in the south-western part of Uganda on the rim of the Great Rift Valley. RAINFOREST The hillsides within the park covered in mist and have for thousands of years sheltered one of the most ancient and biologically varied rainforest of south-western Uganda. The Bwindi Forest is said to be more than 25,000 years old. Bwindi means darkness is the local language in reference to the dense rainforest which hosts more than 400 different plant species. Bwindi is said to host about 300 mountain gorillas, almost half the entire mountain gorilla population living in the wild today. UNIQUE PLANT AND ANIMAL SPECIES The forest also plays host to more than 350 bird species, 23 of which are endemic Albertine Rift bird species and more than 200 butterfly species, about 324 species of trees, ten of which are unique to Bwindi Forest. Visits to this part of Uganda can also include a cultural experience visiting the neighbouring Bakiga and Batwa Pygmies through
guided village walks. MGAHINGA GORILLA NATIONAL PARK Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits at an altitude of between 2,227m and 4,127m. The park was created in 1991 with the main purpose of protecting the mountain gorillas. The park is also an important habitat of the golden monkeys. Mgahinga’s most striking land features are its three conical, extinct volcanoes that are part of the spectacular Virunga Massif, a mountain range that straddles the borders of Rwanda to the South, Uganda to the north and the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. BATWA PYGMIES The area forms the Virunga Trans-boundary Conservation Area of which Mgahinga forms a sizeable portion. Aside from being a critical wildlife conservation area, the park is of huge cultural significance, especially for the indigenous Batwa pygmies. Measuring 33.7 square kilometres, the park is the smallest national parks in Uganda in size. Mgahinga in the local language refers to the small volcanic stones cleared from the farmlands of the local communities living at the foothills of the volcanoes mountains in southern Uganda.

IT IS RECOMMENDED TO USE ONLY DULY REGISTERED AND RECOGNIZED TOUR COMPANIES IN UGANDA TO ARRANGE GORILLA TRACKING AND OTHER SAFARI ACTIVITIES IN UGANDA A Gorilla Trek within the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is, without a doubt, a highlight of all a remarkable wildlife safari in Uganda. We give you some facts and information that would make your gorilla safari experience in Uganda much easier to plan. WHEN TO GO? Tracking for mountain gorillas is Uganda is possible throughout the year due to the favourable weather. However, most people prefer to track for the gorillas in Uganda between the months of June and September and between December and February. These are the high seasons. However, tracking for the mountain gorillas over the low season is also possible and the gorilla permits are cheaper over the low season. A high season gorilla permit costs $600 per person and $350 per person over the low season in the months April and May. WHICH TOUR COMPANY TO USE TO ARRANGE FOR GORILLA TRACKING There are many tour companies in Uganda that offer gorilla tracking services. Most of these companies are members of the Association of Uganda Tour Operators (AUTO) and have been listed in this guidebook. It is recommended to use only duly registered and recognized tour companies in Uganda to arrange gorilla tracking and other safari activities in Uganda. WHERE TO TRACK THE MOUNTAIN GORILLAS Gorilla tracking in Uganda can be done in two national parks. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park. These two parks have two different species of the mountain gorillas. However, most people prefer
to track the gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park because the gorillas are not too far. HOW TO GET A GORILLA TREKKING PERMIT IN UGANDA Gorilla permits are limited to only 72 per day. A maximum of eight people are allowed to visit one gorilla family for about one hour. The process of securing your gorilla tracking permits is straightforward. It starts by first identifying a tour company that you intend to use for your travels in Uganda. Then informing them of the desired travel dates and the number of people coming on the trip. The tour company will then confirm the availability of the permits and accommodation options within the park. The guests are then required to send copies of their passports to secure the permits under their names and also make payment for the permits either through wire transfers or via credit cards to the tour company. It is also important to note that only Ugandan-registered tour companies can access information regarding gorilla permits availability. HOW MANY GORILLA FAMILIES ARE IN BWINDI AND MGAHINGA? Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has 12 gorilla families. Most of these are located in the northern part and southern parts of the park which have a tropical rain forest. In the northern part of Buhoma and Ruhija the gorilla families that live here include Mubare, Rushegura, Habinyanja, Bitukura, Oruzogo and Kyaguriro which is mainly used for research purposes. In the southern part of the park live the Kahungye, Nshongi, Mishaya, Businye, Bweza and Nkuringo families.
Mgahinga National Park has one gorilla family called Nyakagezi. However, this gorilla group is always on the move and hence difficult to track within Mgahinga. WHAT TO WEAR? It is recommended to wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes for the trek. Long pants are also recommended as the trekking happens within the forest that is covered in long grass and thick bushes. A long-sleeved shirt or blouse is also recommended. Warm clothing and jackets are also recommended because the forest gets cold and wet due to its high altitude. WHERE TO STAY? There are a host of accommodation options that range from budget to high end accommodation and are scattered within the park. It is best to book your accommodation through a Ugandanbased tour operator who would also be in charge of arranging your gorilla tracking permits and ground movement. HOW TO GET TO BWINDI Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located on the south-western bottom of Uganda close to the Rwanda border and about 540km from Kampala. The park is about 7 hours by road from Kampala. The park is also easily accessible by road from Kigali in Rwanda. The road trip from Kigali to Bwindi takes about three hours. However, charted flights from Kampala or Entebbe can be arranged. Bwindi is accessible from three airfields at Kihiihi, Kayonza in the northern region in addition to Nyakabande found in Kisoro.

ueen Elizabeth National Park is undoubtedly the most popular destinations in Uganda. This is mainly so because of the park’s diverse ecosystems that include wide open savannah grasslands that contrast sharply to the humid forests in the park.

been dramatically carved into the rolling green hills of the park. While in the park, a drive to higher ground offers panoramic views of the Kazinga Channel which hosts a huge hippo, buffalo and elephant population. The wildlife diversity and density found in the park is incredible. Currently, the park boasts a hippo population of about 5,000, an elephant population of about 2,500 and a buffalo population of about 10,000. With such numbers, visitors to the park are guaranteed a treat to a spectacular wildlife safari. Other common wildlife found in the park include warthogs, waterbuck, Uganda kob and topi, as well as the sitatunga
the fig trees and while away their time here. Aside from the lions, the park also boasts other big cats that include the elusive leopard, civet and serval cats. Solitary leopards are nocturnal and are well camouflaged, thus spotting them is all the more rewarding! The smaller cats are also predominantly nocturnal and are best spotted on night game drives within the park. BIRDLIFE Birding in Queen Elizabeth National Park offers an incredible treat as it contains a variety of habitats that range from savannah grasslands to wetlands to lowland forests. This diversity in ecosystems attracts a huge variety of birds which currently number at more than 600 species. This is by far the biggest birdlife population found in any protected area in East Africa. A majority of the birds found in this area are regarded as famous birds of East Africa and are a must see for birdwatchers coming to Uganda.

he Rwenzoris, also known as the Mountains of the Moon, lie in western Uganda along the border of Uganda with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The snow-peaked Rwenzori mountain range are the third highest point in Africa after the Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Mount Kenya in Kenya. Rwenzori Mountains National Park protects mainly the mountain range and its fragile ecosystem which stretches some 120km in length and some 65km wide. Within the park are more than 70 mammal species and about 220 bird species, 19 of which are endemic to the Albertine Rift. Due to its seclusion and cold weather, the park also hosts some of the world’s rarest plant species. RARE PLANT SPECIES The Rwenzori Mountains National Park is known more for its distinctive flora rather than its fauna as there are few wildlife that can be spotted in the park. On the upward route to the summits of the Rwenzori, hikers climb through a series of distinct altitudinal vegetation zones that include montane forest, bamboo, tree heathers and afro-alpine. The afro-alpine on the Rwenzoris is one of the world’s rarest botanical communities. It is mainly limited to East African Mountains at altitudes above 3800 meters.
MOUNTAINEERING The terrain within the Rwenzoris offer some world-class hiking and mountaineering opportunities in Uganda. For mountain climbing enthusiasts, the challenging steep slopes of the Rwenzori Mountain range would be ideal to tackle. Mountain climbing expeditions to the Rwenzoris can range between nine to twelve days to get to the Margherita Point on Mount Stanley, the mountain range’s summit. It is advisable to bring your own mountain climbing gear for mountain climbing expeditions to the Rwenzoris. The Rwenzori mountain range comprises six distinct mountains. Mounts Stanley (5,109m), Speke (4,890m) and Baker (4,843m) are the highest peaks of the mountain range and all bear permanent snow and glaciers. The snow peaks can be reached by hiking through the Central Circuit and via the Kilembe Trails. LOCAL CUISINE Aside from tackling the mountain peaks, cultural traditions in the nearby village of the Bakonzo people can be arranged. The visits include nature walks within and around the Rwenzori Mountains National Park as well as cultural experiences such as living with the local community and sampling local cuisine.

emuliki National Park sprawls across the floor of the Semliki Valley on the remote, western side of the Rwenzori Mountain range. The park is dominated by the easternmost extension of the great Ituri Forest of the Congo Basin. This is one of Africa’s most ancient and biodiverse forests. The forest is one of the few that survived the last ice age. A TASTE OF CENTRAL AFRICA The Semliki Valley contains numerous features that are widely associated with central rather than eastern Africa. These include thatched huts that are shaded by West African oil palms while the Semliki River, which forms the international boundary between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), is a sort of miniature version of the Congo River. The Ituri Forest also plays host to numerous Central African wildlife species, and the local population includes a Batwa pygmy community that originated from the Ituri. As a result, this park provides a taste of Central Africa without having to leave Uganda. While Semuliki’s species have been accumulating for over 25,000 years, the park contains evidence of even older processes. Hot springs bubble up from the depths to demonstrate the powerful subterranean forces that have been shaping the rift valley during the last 14 million years.

The “male” spring, kn own as Bintente, ha s a diameter of about 12 metres and is set in a lush sw ampy clearing while the “female” spr ing, known as Nyasi mbi, meaning “the female ancestor s”, is a boiling geyser which spurts bubbling water and steam up to two me ters high. The hot spring has a temperature of upto 103° Celsius and the steam cloud that rises from it can be seen from a distance of up to 2 kil ometres away.

urchison Falls National Park sits on the northern edge of the Albertine Rift Valley. The park was first gazetted as a game reserve in 1926, making it Uganda’s oldest conservation area. Boasting a surface area of about 2,840 square kilometers, the park is also Uganda’s largest in terms of size. Murchison Falls plays host to a wide range of wildlife that include about 76 species of mammals and a recorded bird population of more than 450 species. The park is bisected by the Victoria Nile, that flows from the Lake Victoria that plunges from a height of about 45 metres through a rocky opening on the surface of the Rift Valley. The huge water volume creates a magnificent waterfall known as the Murchison Falls. These falls form the centerpiece of the park’s attraction sites. BULIGI GAME TRACKS The river meanders in a slow stream down the floor of the Rift Valley before it empties into the Lake Albert. It is as this stage that the river combines with the ecosystem around it to attract wildgame and hence forming one of the most remarkable wildlife spectacles. The Buligi Game Tracks, that stretch between the Victoria and Albert Niles, provide the park’s most remarkable game viewing locations. Along the banks of the rivers are such wildgame as elephants, giraffes and buffaloes; while hippos, Nile crocodiles and aquatic birds are permanent residents.

UGANDA PYGMIES
The Bambuti are a hunter-gatherer community found in the western side of Uganda. They are closely related to the Batwa pygmies found in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). They are also ethnically related to the pygmies of the Congo, the Ndorobo of Kenya and the Koikoi and San (Bushmen and Hottentots) of Southern Africa. Their average height is about 1.5 meters. In Uganda, the Bambuti can be traced in the present districts of Bundibujo and Kasese. They also inhabit the tropical forests of the Congo River Basin along the Ugandan border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). They are believed to be the original inhabitants of the Rwenzori Mountain areas before the arrival of other Bantu tribes. They are believed to have come from the Congo Forest. Their language is called Kumbuti which is a very complex dialect that is also very difficult to learn. DWELLINGS As hunters and gatherers, the Bambuti are constantly on the move. They move from place to place in search of food and secure places to live. They have a light bronze colour and a beautiful skin complexion. They have the same curly, woolly hair as their Bantu neighbours. They

spot broad faces with wide nostrils and extraordinarily thick lips. The Bambuti build their huts in the same model as other Bantu tribes build their huts. However, the roofs of their huts are made of leaves not thatch. The huts are round and built very short with so small an entrance that they have to crawl on their hands and knees when entering and or leaving the hut. Since they are constantly on the move, their huts are temporary. FOOD Their diet is basically composed of meat that is often supplemented with bananas and sweet potatoes which they obtain by bartering meat for them with other nearby tribes. The Bambuti are known to be a very fierce and aggressive tribe. They are skilled hunters who get their meat from mainly hunting wild game in the forest. They carry an array of weaponry that includes spears, bows and poisoned arrows. They are known to ambush wild game at water points in the forest. It is the task of the Bambuti men to hunt and bring food for their families. The women do normal house chores that also include carrying the family’s possessions when moving from one location to another. DRESSING Their dress is composed of a belt wound round the waist, with a piece if bark cloth attached to the belt in the middle of the back, brought down between the legs and fixed against the belt front. This type of dress suits both men and women but it is not very common for the Bambuti to put on clothes. They usually go stark naked though, occasionally, some of them may be found with a brass-wire bangle.
Karamojong ong The Karamojong is a tribe that lives within the Karamoja region in northern Uganda. This tribal outfit has a striking semblance to the popular Maasai community in Kenya and northern Tanzania. Like the Maasai, the Karamojong are pastoralists, they move with their cattle from one location to another in search of grazing pasture for their prized cattle. The Karamoja region has a cattle culture and the Karamojong are famous for cattle-raiding escapades, especially of neighbouring tribal communities. RETAIN CULTURE Like the Kenyan Maasai people, the Karamojong have managed to retain their traditional culture and practices such as traditional clothing. Again, their traditional dressing mirrors that of the Kenyan Maasai as they don a shawl-like garment that is often in red and black while the Karamojong women proudly wear elaborate beadwork on their hands and around their necks. AGE-SET SYSTEM The Karamojong live in one central settlement called a manyatta or ere. Theirs is a society weaved in traditional practices that are based on a patriarchal age-set system that is led by the warriors, also known as the Gazelles or ngigetei. The young warriors and the general population is advised and headed by a council of elders known as the Mountains or ngimoru. Karamojong men are allowed to marry more than one wife as long as the man is able to meet the bride price of a new bride which is paid for by heads of cattle. The Karamojong are divided into both clan and territorial groupings. There are three main sub-groups which consist of the Bokora, Pian and Matheniko.

he Acholi people of northern Uganda are said to be a product of intermarriage between the Luo and the Madi of Southern Sudan. Their language and culture is similar to that of the Luo and they are closely related to the Alur of West Nile, the Jaluos of Kenya and the Japadhola of eastern Uganda. The Acholi are mainly found in Uganda and number over 1.5 million. There are about 500,000 Acholi in South Sudan. Like other Luo sub-tribes, the Acholi trace their origins in Rumbek, South Sudan and are said to have migrated southwards. Currently, the Acholi inhabit the districts of Agago, Amuru, Gulu, Kitgum, Nwoya, Lamwo and Pader in northern Uganda. This region is also commonly known as Acholiland. The Acholi also found in Magwe County in South Sudan. TRADITIONS The Acholi speak Acholi, a language that is closely related to Luo. The Song of Lawino, one of the most famous and most successful African literary works was written in Acholi by Okot p’Bitek before it was translated into English. The traditional dwelling-places for the Acholi were mainly circular huts with a high peak. The circular mud hits were furnished with a mud sleepingplatform, jars of grain and a sunken fireplace. The walls of the mud huts were decorated with geometrical or conventional designs in red, white or grey. The Acholi were skilled hunters. They used nets and spears for hunting wild game. They also kept goats, sheep and cattle. And when they went to war with other communities, they used spears and long but narrow shields made from giraffe or ox hide. HUNTERS The Acholi practiced various types of hunting. One type of hunting was known as dwar arum, which took place during the dry season when there was no grass. This type of hunting involved a lot of hunters. Another type of hunting was known as dwar obwo. It was an ordinary type of hunting that involved the use of spears and nets. Another type of hunting was known as

kirange. It was mainly practiced during the early rainy season when the rivers would be slightly flooded. The Acholi would drive the game into the rivers and go for the kill in the water. During the rainy season, it was very difficult for the Acholi to go hunting since no form of organized hunting could take place due to the cold and wet conditions. During such seasons, only the okai (trappers) could go out after the animals. The work of the okai was incredibly difficult because they only worked alone. They would use different kinds of traps according to the type of animal they intended to trap. The common traps included okol – which ran a noose attached to a log of wood; tekke - a circular foot trap; twok - the falling spear trap used to kill an elephant and other big game. The trap was passed under the tree from which the spear would be suspended; Bur - a pit trap whereby a pit was dug in the game’s path. SUPREME BEING The Acholi believed in a supreme being called jok. They had shrine for jok was known as abila from where all sacrifices, private and public were offered. The Acholi believed that the spirits of their ancestors would appear near the abila. The Acholi would worship the spirits of the dead so that they could assist the bereaved ones or exercise their power to make hunting successful or scare away evil spirits from the village. To appease the spirits of the dead, the Acholi would offer them meat sacrifices. They also offered simsim and beer during the appropriate times of the sacrifices at the abila. CULTURAL DANCES Like in any other African culture, dance was at the central root of the Acholi culture. They usually sang about everyday incidences while other songs referred to past occurrences within their community. The Acholi had eight different types of dances namely; lalobaloba, otiti, bwola, myel awal (winyela), apiti, ladongo, myel wanga and atira. The lalobaloba dance did not use any drum beats. The people danced in circles whereby the men would form an outer ring and they would hold a girl’s
hand high above their heads. There was no special occasion for this dance, which was mainly performed using sticks. The otiti dance involved all the male dancers carrying shields and spears. The dancers would encircle drums that were mainly attached to a post in the middle of the dancing arena. The bwola dance is the most important dance of the Acholi. It is also known as the chief’s dance and can only be performed on his orders. The men form a large circle and each of them carries a drum. Their dance and movement of the feet matches rhythmically with the drum beats. The girls, on the other hand, dance separately inside the circle. The otiti dance had a definite leader who would move within and without the circle. He would also set the time and led the singing. The otiti dance leader was considered an important person in the community and was traditionally among the very few people in the community that was allowed to wear a leopard skin. The myel awal dance was a funeral dance. The women wail around the grave when the men armed with spears and shields dance lalobaloba. Apiti was a dance for the girls. Men were not supposed to participate. The girls danced in a line and sang. It was usually held in the middle of the year when the rains were good. Ladongo was danced following a successful hunt when the hunters were still away from their homes. In this dance, men and women faced each other in two lines and jumped up and down clapping their hands. In the myel wanga dance, men sat down and played their nanga (harps) while in front of them the women danced apiti. This dance was usually held after marriages or at beer parties. Then there was atira dance. It is now completely outdated. It was held on the eve of a battle. All the dancers were armed and they went through the motions of spear fighting and thrusting.

Bull-fighting Set to promote community tourism THE LOCALS LOOK FORWARD TO THE BULL-FIGHTING DAYS AS IT IS NOT ONLY A FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT FOR THEM, BUT IS SEEN AS A CULTURAL TRADITION THAT BRINGS TOGETHER PEOPLE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY
B
ull-fighting is a new sport that is gaining popularity in Uganda and is seen as a way of entertaining domestic, regional and foreign tourists coming to Uganda with a view to witnessing the mighty bulls take on each other. Bull-fighting is an important sport and tourist attraction in countries such as Spain and all across Latin America. In Uganda, bull-fighting takes place in the Namasho grounds in Bududa District. The show starts as early as 9am every Saturday. Excited crowds gather around the grounds and some people stake out bets on which bull will carry the day. The locals look forward to the bull-fighting days as it is not only a form of entertainment for them, but is seen as a cultural tradition that brings together people within the community. BULL-FIGHTING TRADITION The bull-fighting tradition has over the time gained a lot of prominence and has continued to draw crowds from as far as Kampala. The bull-fighting tradition dates back to the 1950s when locals would bring out their bulls to square off against each other and in the process burn out excess energy in them so they could be calm when in the shed during the rest of the week. The tradition is also believed to have gained prominence in the 190s around the Namasho area after the local people
got entangled in ceaseless physical fights over a salty water source in the area. The fights were so intense and the community called for peace and it was decided that they would equally share the resource. However, they started the bull-fighting as a form of entertainment and a reminder of the importance of enhancing peace amongst themselves. SOCIAL EVENT Before the bull-fights start, the village umpires assess the health and size of the bulls and once given a clean bill of health, the duel starts. The crowds watching the fights average about 1,000 people who not only make bets, but also find time to socialize and catch up. Village elders also come to spectate and also offer traditional prayers for both the bulls and the people watching the fights. The mood around the fights is normally festive as locally brewed beer is plentiful. Up to three rounds of bull-fights takes place and when finally a victor is declared, the owner of the bull gets a small cash prize from the bets made by the people. Access to Namasho is through the town of Mbale from where one can connect to Bududa. As the sport is gaining popularity, there are plans of expanding the sport so it features prominently as a community tourism venture that benefits the local communities.

SAFETY IS A PRIORITY However, no previous rafting experience is required to have a go at it. The rafting companies in Uganda have highly trained and experienced instructors and personnel whose ultimate goal is a safe rafting experience. TRACKING CHIMPS in Kibale Forest T
he chimpanzees are, without a doubt, the star attraction in the Kibale Forest National Park. Here, they roam free and number in their hundreds. Kibale is also home to other primates and is said to host the world’s highest population densities of primates. And this makes Kibale a must-visit destination for primate trackers. With the large chimpanzee population in the park, most trackers are drawn to the park to catch a glimpse of these cheeky primates. However, unlike the big, bulky mountain gorillas, that in spite of their sheer size seem shy and timid, the chimps are the direct opposite. They are not only agile on their feet, but it is difficult to get close to them.

But unlike the mountain gorillas which almost sit still and mind their own business, the chimpanzees are somewhat unpredictable in their mannerisms and a little less approachable. A DAY WITH THE CHIMPS However, the thrill of getting so close and personal with these primates is truly one of those life’s great experiences. The chimps are fun to hang around. There are daily chimpanzee tracking expeditions at the Kibale Forest National Park. The treks start at the park’s headquarters at Kanyanchu and take approximately two to four hours covering a distance of between 3km to 5km. These are mostly guided tours into the forest.
KIBALE IS ALSO HOME TO OTHER PRIMATES AND IS SAID TO HOST THE WORLD’S HIGHEST POPULATION DENSITIES OF PRIMATES PANDEMONIUM They create a pandemonium at the mere sight or sound of approaching humans, even though they are the closest primates to human beings. From the safety of the forest canopy, these mischievous primates tear the silence of the forest with loud screams, laughs and sometimes have the time to make faces as they jump from one tree to the other. However, there are groups of chimpanzees have been habituated to human contact, just in the same manner as some

For trackers keen on getting up close and personal, tracking the habituated chimps is an experience unlike any other. However, the number of people visiting the habituated chimps is limited and are allowed to spend only one hour with the primates. One can also spend an entire day with the habituated chimps in Kibale, but this is limited to only one or two persons per day. Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale costs $70 per person over and above the park entrance fees.

While Kibale Forest National Park is by far one of the most popular locations in Uganda to track the chimpanzees, it is not the only place to watch these amazing primates. Other locations within Uganda include: BUDONGO FOREST RESERVE: The Budongo Forest Reserve is located in the north-western part of Uganda. The forest reserve has dark, dense forests that play host to some chimp families. Here, tracking takes about two hours and trackers are allowed one

QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK: This park is known more for its wide open savannah grasslands where wild game roam free and its tree climbing lions than for its chimpanzee population. However, while the chimpanzee population in the park is not as huge as
this wildlife reserve are known to put on a show for their human visitors as they are known to roam into the wide open savannah plains and stand on their hind legs and walk upright! NGAMBA ISLAND CHIMPANZEE SANCTUARY: Okay, so it’s hardly a genuine wilderness encounter, but if time is limited and you’re confined to the Kampala region then this Lake Victoria island a short way south of the capital, is home to around 40 orphaned or rescued chimps.
