Creating Changes The Light on Art Therapy: Uncovering Shadows By Emylia Safian

In the process of art therapy, spontaneity of the creative process is encouraged. Both the process and the resulting artwork offer opportunities for further exploration and insight for the individual client. Within this context, the role of the therapist is as a companion, one who journeys along with the client without a preplanned agenda, and in an atmosphere of non-judgmental curiosity and acceptance. Yalom (2003) conveyed his idea of the therapeutic relationship as likened to “fellow travellers”. The spontaneity of art taps into the subconscious, evokes memories of the past, and often activates the pain of unresolved experiences. I have witnessed images arising from within the companioned journey acting as retrieval cues for memories, or leading to analysis of the unconscious. As a fellow traveller, I am constantly checking in on the emotive content of my companion’s artwork, listening actively to what is being shared at both verbal and non-verbal levels. Images eliciting positive emotions affirm the creative process and leave the client satiated. However, images created can also potentially elicit memories long forgotten and buried in the deep recesses of the human psyche. Schaverien (1992) summarized the process succinctly – “the picture is a material object, created in the interest of expressing some unarticulated aspect of the psyche. It brings shadow elements into the light, and so a conscious attitude.” Quoting Yalom (1995): "I have yet to encounter the unproblematic patient, the one whose course of therapy resembles a newly christened ship gliding smoothly down the slip into the water". A fellow traveller in the journey of self-exploration allows for elimination of blind spots, and provision of containment during moments of discomfort when journeying deeper to unravel the mystery of the unconscious. It is a humbling experience to be allowed to journey alongside a fellow adult within a trusting relationship. Julie was a healthy adult female aged 40 years old, who utilised art therapy for personal development. Julie was a reflective person and prior to coming for sessions, she seeked answers to life’s challenges through self-help psychology books and her 8

Therapy personal spiritual practice. While I did not make it an intention to analyse dreams in our sessions, an invaluable opportunity presented itself through an image she painted. The symbolism of that dream imagery grew and became pivotal to the following sessions’ explorations, up to the end of our sessions. There were multiple symbols in this image [see Image 1], overlapping and intertwining with the other. Julie paused periodically, distanced her gaze from the image, and saw and developed more and more symbols in the artwork. Most significantly, Julie repeatedly uttered “scary” as she continued further in the process. The image’s emotional message appeared to be so, and amongst other things, the image stirred unpleasant dream memories Julie had had since she was in her teenage years. Julie frequently dreamed of a shadowy, hooded man trying to harm her in different ways. She attributed the symbol appearing in her dreams whenever she got anxious, helpless or insecure about life experiences. The dream symbol had first appeared when she was 14 years old. The hooded stranger, whose only visible features were his eyes, had appeared in the artwork that day. The act of creating in the art therapy session had placed Julie in a position of control. The scary symbol was amidst other symbols of “strength”, “power” and “freedom”, contrasting with her dream state when opposing emotions like “attacked”, “threatened” or “rejected” were evoked by the same imagery.

Our following sessions saw Julie recalling and sharing more of her past dreams with me, with the hooded stranger symbol mentioned in the same emotional tone again. We brought that particular symbol to a deeper discourse, exploring it as a shadow aspect described by Jung as an unconscious part of one’s personality which is least desirable and largely negative. “Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is.” (Jung in Miller, C.J., 2004). Once an image is externalised, transformation begins to take place in the inner world of the artist even without interpretation. After some weeks, Julie came to a realisation that the dream symbol that manifested as a hooded stranger was possibly her disguised self. She accepted it as a part of herself that needed to feel more protected, in-control, confident and secure. With this consciousness of the dream symbol within the artwork, Julie was able to understand herself through a process that could never have been substituted by words alone, and to take the process of individuation to greater heights. Julie ended her sessions with a painting titled “Hope” [see Image 2] and a letter to herself - “Life is like a book, with some pages you want to bookmark. Like a good book, the plot gets thicker. Enjoy life like you enjoy a good book, with a cup of tea and cake.” References Gilroy, A. & McNeilly, G. eds. (2000). The Changing Shape of Art Therapy: New Developments in Theory and Practice. Living Stories By Tim Zeelie

Living Stories is a collection of works, five years in the making, that will be exhibited at The Substation Gallery this August. The exhibition reinterprets the iconography of well-known stories, and in doing so, creates a particular kind of social commentary relevent to contemporary Singaporean society. Tim Zeelie caught up with S. Chandrasekaran, the artist, to find out more about this exhibition. TZ: Despite referring to many well-known old and inhereted stories, your idea for this exhibition feels new and unusual. Can you tell us a bit more about the exhibition? SC: Living Stories brings out the ‘symbolic’ representation of stories that belongs to us. These stories express the societal changes that happen as part of our everyday reality, and these changes are transformed and interpreted through various forms of iconic images. The reinterpreted iconic images reflect the various social issues society grapples with, and these regained meanings reflect the various socio-political and economic complexities of daily life in Singapore. Some of the stories have to do with the ‘predetermined’ conditions in which we live, while others look into how the net-citizens address their tensions and contradictions through social media. This exhibition aims to regain and reinterpret the voice of the society as living stories through paintings, sculptures and drawings. TZ: Roland Barthes, in his book Mythologies, reveals how the symbolism in cultural products often goes unquestioned. Symbolism and meaning is passed off as 'natural', when instead it is socially constructed and embedded in ideology. How does this exhibition relate to Barthes theories, and in what ways are you reinterpreting the semiotics of these stories? SC: I am interested in traditional narratives, in making them relevant to modern society, and in re-expressing them as presentday stories. In the Hindu Epic, the Ramayana, for example, Hanuman the Monkey God depicts his devotion to Rama and Sita

The Substation Soapbox by ripping open his heart, in which images of Rama and Sita are reflected. This sort of devotion can still be seen in modern society and in our social and political system. In one of the works, Riches, Reputation and Devotion a bull-lion opens its heart to express the devotion we have for the system. In this image, though, Hanuman becomes the bull-lion, which is a reference to Singapore’s iconic Merlion. In its heart is a bolt of lightning, and above its head it carries a hammer. The hammer and the lightning bolt are both political symbols locally, and help recontextualise the image, and place it within socio-political conditions. TZ: It's a huge exhibition, and includes bronze sculptures, drawings and paintings. How long has it taken to create these works and why did you decide to use these particular mediums (bronze, drawing and painting)? SC: The paintings and small drawings are all images that depict how the psyche is influenced and manipulated by our socio-political and economic reality. The bronze works depict various iconic forms that I’ve adapted and reinterpreted from Indian mythology. These iconic forms bridge the gap between traditional narratives and our present-day context. I hope that they will allow the viewers to see past narratives reflected in the present, as living in the present. These works were created over the period of five years. Living Stories is on at The Substation Gallery from 3 – 23 August 2012. The Substation Gallery is open daily from 12pm – 9pm, and closed on public holidays. The Substation is located at 45 Armenian Street, Singapore, 179936. For more information visit www.substation.org or contact 6337 7800

Blowing Glass Without A Furnace ‌ By B. Jane Cowie, Glass Artist and AGS Educator

As a glass blower I miss having a furnace. Gathering the first gather of the day is a soothing and wonderful moment. Avoiding the burst of heat blasting from the furnace door as I wind the soft sensuous honey-like hot glass onto a blowing pipe is magic. Making glass without a furnace led me to re-think how I could teach hot glass making in Singapore. Certainly with enough passion and determination anything is possible. Running AGS Education (a self initiated arts program based in Singapore) has been an exciting time. Meeting new people who share a common interest in glass art, assisting them realise their creative talents and watching them learn new skills is fulfilling. Participating in the development of a Singaporean artglass community, nurturing local talent and enriching peoples’ lives through creative practice is a long term goal. One of our students, Michael Conlin, started taking glassmaking classes with AGS Education a year ago. He started with minimal hot glass experience and attended weekly Evening Classes and monthly Murrini Roll Up Workshops. To begin with I was doing most of the hot work, but soon Michael learnt how to complete the hot work to create his own Murrini glass vessels and jewellery pieces from start to finish. AGS Introductory Classes are held Tuesday and Wednesday evenings for beginners. Students then continue to develop their skills by specialising in a particular glassmaking technique such as pate de verre, kiln casting, bead making or hot glass rollups.

Michael exhibited his art glass at the Goodman Arts Centre, Singapore in May 2012. The exhibition was a colourful demonstration of his developed craft skills and love of glass! Combining hot glass, kiln working and cold finishing techniques the exhibition demonstrated that a lot can be achieved without a furnace. With a limited amount of time (Michael works full time, travels often and a family in Singapore) combined with enthusiasm, verve and creative focus Michael have achieved a great body of work. Michael began with lapidary and moved to hot glass to create forms that are soft and shaped while hot. Then, in his own lapidary studio, he uses his stone cutting skills to finish the component pieces he makes with hot glass. Cold working, grinding, polishing and assembling are important when it comes to finishing quality art glass. Working with your hands means you work with the ‘other side’ of your brain. AGS Education students have the chance to ‘mentally rest and mediate’ as they focus on the bright glass colours and think about what they want to make before the hard work begins … Art making they say is 20% inspiration and 80% perspiration, which is certainly true in the equatorial Singaporean heat. AGS Education combines the inspiration and creativity of each individual student with appropriate glassmaking guidance and technical expertise. The 80% perspiration, practice and persistence results in a rewarding experience, creative focus and numerous glass artworks – all made here in Singapore.

What is the Pop Art Movement? Pop art, which is an abbreviation of "Popular Art", seems to have emerged in the 1950s in the United Kingdom. It spread to the United States and the rest of the world over the next few decades. It is this spread and acceptance across the world that was referred to as the Pop Art Movement. Though personalized pop art canvas pieces can be found everywhere these days, the movement which remains one of the major artistic movements of the 20th century, is still not well understood. Pop Art also represented rebellion and being different. For a two decade period before the Pop Art Movement, abstract art dominated the art world, with New York City as its centre. Though abstract art was a well known art form, it presented itself with an air of sophistication that made it inaccessible to the masses. People in general were also getting bored with abstract and other fine art forms and the emergence of popular art at that time was a refreshing change. Not only was it new and distinct from everything else people were accustomed to, its bright and funky colours whether on canvas or on advertising billboards appealed to a broad base of the public. There was no divide between fine and commercial art any longer. The superior aesthetic qualities aside the other aspect of that identified with audiences was its use of everyday items, images and icons to emphasize and redefine certain elements in our culture. It started appearing in the mass media, in advertising, movie posters and even on music album covers. It suddenly became chic and cool and many celebrities started asking artists for their own. Marilyn Monroe's prints by Andy Warhol after her death still remain one of the most iconic prints ever. Due to its association with celebrities and well known icons and objects, Popular Art started to become more glamorous and refined over the years. Though it was mass produced and did not cost much, it did manage to capture essential changes in culture and society.

The pieces by well known pop artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein are now amongst the most valuable pieces in the world. An Andy Warhol silkscreen print called "Eight Elvises" was sold to a private buyer in 2009, for US$100 million, making it one of the top 10 most expensive paintings ever sold. Classic examples of Pop Art are Andy Warhol’s works based on Campbell canned soup images. Roy Lichtenstein was another pop icon who created art which looked like comic strips. Till this day the Warhol Pop Art style and the Lichtenstein Pop Art style are the 2 dominant styles emulated by artists all over the world. Fine Art Book Launch Emily of Emerald Hill by Stella Kon Featuring the Artworks of Kelly Reedy

Cover Story

By Irene Marx

Before the upcoming launch of the new limited edition printing of the Singaporean play, Emily of Emerald Hill by Stella Kon, SAGG editor Irene Marx spoke with artist Kelly Reedy who was asked to create iconic images for this gem of a theatre piece. SAGG: When did you first encounter the one-woman play, Emily of Emerald Hill? Kelly: I first saw the play in 2000 at Jubilee Hall in a production by the Wild Rice theatre company starring Ivan Heng as Emily. SAGG: What impressed you the most? Kelly: My memory of the play over the years revolved around the strong matriarchal character of Emily. I remember it as an entertaining play, full of heart and soul. SAGG: How did you feel when you were asked to create the symbolic images for the fine art edition? Kelly: I felt very honored as this play represents an important part in Singapore’s cultural heritage. SAGG: Where did you begin? Kelly: I began by rereading the play and then I saw Wild Rice’s 2011 anniversary production at the Esplanande. At this point I was surprised by how poignant the play really was. It had its comic moments but by and large it was a drama and a tragedy packed full of calamities and obstacles, which Emily kept trying to rise above. I was very moved by it. SAGG: How did you try to capture the “Peranakanness” of the play? Kelly: What I love about the Peranakan culture is their use of funky colour combinations, turquoise and salmon pinks combined with pastel yellows, blues and oranges. I also love the multicoloured batik sarongs that they would have worn in Emily’s time. I decided to use these colourful fabrics as a base or language to create my images. SAGG: What made you decide to use paper cut and collage for the entire suite of images? Kelly: The artworks where suppose to be symbolic rather than realistic representations of the chosen characters and scenes in the play. Paper cuts lent themselves well to this abstract concept. I also wanted to combine elements from the different cultural heritages that make up the Peranakan world, such as Malay

inspired batik fabrics, Chinese traditional paper cuts as well as references to the British Colonial era in which the Peranakan culture thrived. SAGG: How did you decide which people or moments in the play to depict? Kelly: I read through the play several times and it was very clear to me the people or moments that were the most striking in the text. SAGG: Do you have a favorite image? Kelly: I am most happy with my interpretations of Emily’s favorite son Richard, depicted in Matahari I and Matahari II. Their relationship was the deepest and most complex in the whole play. I like the Malay word “matahari” which denotes the “sun”, literally meaning “eye of the sun”. I felt it alluded to the important place Richard held in Emily’s heart, just as we say someone is the “apple of our eye” or someone is “our sunshine”, so was Richard for Emily. The two images represent Richard and his relationship with his mother over time, the positive and negative energies, that which gives life and that which destroys life. SAGG: Is this play “typically” Singaporean or does it go beyond the local context? Kelly: The power and beauty of this play is that it is both so very local and so very universal at the same time. Stella Kon has created a masterpiece in the Singaporean context, but it is also one that everyone anywhere can relate to when thinking about the intricate relationships of families. For more information on the artist, please visit www.kellyreedy.com Emily of Emerald Hill by Stella Kon, published by Landmark Books and Constellation Books, 2012 will appear in bookstores in Singapore in November.

Shadowlife: Works by contemporary Australian Indigenous artists. Shadowlife is Asialink’s latest touring exhibition in Asia featuring the works of 9 indigenous Australian artists including Christian Thompson, Destiny Beacon, Vernon Ah Kee and the late Michael Riley. Each artist portrays figures of others or themselves, choreographing their own stories through the use of photography and other new media, not just recording traditions of age old cultural practices but also interpreting them in contemporary times, seeking a kind of personal truth and challenge against rooted perceptions of race, culture and creed. 25 Aug – 30 Sep

Shadow Spaces: Photographs of the Old Supreme Court. A new photography exhibition at the Asian Civilisations Museum presents two iconic Singapore buildings in a different light. Shadow Spaces: Photographs of the Old Supreme Court showcases a series of photographs by Los Angeles-based photographer Sean Dungan that capture spaces within the old Supreme Court and a large hangar at Kallang Airport. An enduring part of Singapore’s landscape since the 1930s, these spaces are now in transition. The photographs document a stage between abandonment and alteration. The old Supreme Court is now being rebuilt as the National Art Gallery of Singapore, while there are plans for recreation, retail, and entertainment developments at Kallang Airport. Dungan’s photographs reveal the ephemeral beauty of these empty spaces and convey a nostalgic stillness. The photographs are not concerned with the past, but rather acknowledge that the empty spaces exist in their own time and have a completely separate identity. Till 16 Sep

‘In The Mood For Luxe’ by Andre Tan. Pop artist Andre Tan revisits his obsession with consumerism and the daily bombardment of Western luxury items in this new collection of paintings. Historical Chinese figures which have so far dominated the canvas are now joined by striking dancers and alluring Chinese beauties including an iconic actress clad in the traditional qipao. Andre continues to juxtapose historical Chinese images with popular Western luxury brands revealing the bittersweet nature of luxurious consumption whilst at the same time imbuing these yesteryear images with a newfound current social relevance. All Other Things Being Equal... I could have stayed in bed. By Isabelle Desjeux (France). “All Other Things Being Equal...” is an artist’s attempt at appropriating the scientific process observed in the lab. Focusing on the repetitive practice of the scientists, and the resulting accumulation of detritus, it questions whether when we know we might fail, shouldn’t we just stay in bed? The exhibition includes an idealized scientist’s workspace complete with experimental set-up. It presents insights into the scientists’ mind, as the artist works to understand what makes them get up in the morning and repeat what is usually a disappointing day. Ultimately, the findings might shed light on what drives us all. Isabelle Desjeux attained the title of the Winner of 3rd France + Singapore New Generation Artists (FSNGA) 2011, an annual visual art competition and exhibition organised by Alliance Française de Singapour which aims to feature new generation visual artists from France and Singapore. 17 Aug – 08 Sep

tcc-artshowcase ILLUCYNATION. A collection of illustrations by Sarah Bridget, Rudy Djoharnaen and Erzan Adam The exhibition is intended to rouse the interest of ordinary teenagers and parents by painting a vivid representation of the book to motivate the public towards living in Sophie’s shell and deliberate slightly more about the seemingly regular world they reside in. While intended for young adults, ‘Sophie’s World’ is an intriguing read for all ages, serving as a reminder or introduction to the intricate essence that is philosophy. The depictions themselves are entertaining, colourful, accessible and most importantly, contain snippets of phrases which follow Jostein’s ethos of writing from a child’s perspective, exploring their sense of astonishment about the world around them. Featuring works by Desmond Lui, Ang Siang Lee, Foong Wei Jiet, Lai Weicheng, Lash Tan, Lim Weixiang, Matthew Johnson, Koh Sze Kiat and Juliana Tan. The Asian Prom: Dances of Asia in Visual Art. This exhibition will feature elucidating paintings depicting various dance forms of Asia, by 6 accomplished artists who hail from France, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and India. No doubt, dance is indeed the ruling concept of the exhibition. However, how abstract or how photo-realistic or how symbolic the portrayal in each painting is going to be, is absolutely up to the individual artist. To capture the feel of unpredictable movement, the intensity of emotion or the culturespecific principle of a dance form on canvas, is magical indeed. 25 Aug – 05 Sep

Seeing the Kite Again Series II. This exhibition is inspired by the late master Wu Guanzhong’s metaphor of a kite and how it expresses the connection between an artist, his life and the people around him. By bridging Chinese and Western aesthetics, Wu blazed the trail for the modernization of Chinese art. In 2008, the internationally acclaimed artist donated his largest gift of 113 important works to the National Heritage Board. The current exhibition showcases some of Wu’s most outstanding works produced from 1960s to 2000s in the oil and ink medium. Till 12 Nov

Living Stories By S. Chandrasekaran. Living Stories brings out the symbolic representation of stories that belong to us. These stories reflect social changes in the society, and are expressed through iconic images borrowed from our everyday reality. Even though these iconic images have associated meanings, they will be regained through reinterpretation. In this exhibition eight bronze sculptures, 50 small drawings and 10 paintings will be on display in the gallery. Photo credit: Bull-lion by S. Chandrasekaran. 03 – 23 Aug From ‘don’t sit on me’ to ‘network of pricks’. In March 2011 Cheo Chai Hiang exhibited Don’t Sit On Me at the Tun Tan Cheng Lock Centre for Asian Architectural and Urban Heritage, (National University of Singapore) Melaka. The title was borrowed from a rare graffiti image of a man’s ‘baobei’ scrawled on a seat on an MRT train in Singapore. The project was informed by Cheo’s own idiosyncratic reading of Kuo Pao Kun’s play Descendants of the Eunuch Admiral. Cheo invited friends and colleagues to participate by contributing a discarded chair or stool which they then turned into a five-legged makeshift chair/stool with 3 long and 2 short legs. 70 artists, curators, writers and friends responded to his invitation. In this talk, Cheo will show slides and share his thoughts about the long journey he has traveled whilst undertaking this project, in particular the multiple/overlapping roles he plays as an artist, a project manager, a curator and a commentator. 04 Aug Sound Art Open Call 2012 presents Wagon by Joel Ong. For his work at The Substation in September 2012, sound artist Joel Ong will create a kinetic sculpture that draws its inspiration from both the visual and sonic aesthetics of the engine. The project builds on the historical, social and cultural significance of the engine, particularly on its acoustic refrain within a lineage of iconic soundmarks that are reminiscent of the age of modernism. As an installation, it allows sound to become a gateway to multiple narratives by introducing and engineering full-frequency sound, infrasonic vibrations and interactive elements. In so doing, the act of listening becomes less of a sidelined activity and more of a focused presence that demands its own time and space. 31 Aug – 09 Sep HAO Summit 2012: Culture Sub Culture. The Substation proudly presents the third edition of the HAO Summit – a professional development, mentorship and networking ‘retreat’ programme for young arts and cultural workers in Southeast Asia. The theme of the HAO Summit 2012 is Culture Sub Culture, and looks at how geographies and landscapes have shaped cultural expressions, and how these have evolved over time. 01 – 04 Aug
