Creating Changes Art As Way of Knowing
Art
Therapy
By Theresa Ng
Poet and philosopher George Santayana once said “An artist is a dreamer consenting to dream of the actual world”. What is this actual world that we live in? Do we have the consent to live how we dream of it to be? With art as means of conveying, does this make artists the realists in this world because they are able to communicate in a language of their ideas, aspirations, dreams and emotions? In this world today, our emotions are often neglected and entangled from the many prior roles we play. Very often, we find ourselves stuck in a single role (of being a husband, a survivor of cancer or a mother of three), taking it as “the sum of whom we are”, resulting in the loss of “the richness of our multiplicity” (Allen, 1995). These days, we rely on the capacity of our very limited verbal skills, often defensive and resistant to the most important relationship in our lives – a relationship with ourselves. And what comprises the “you” in this relationship with yourself? What forms your “true self” then? As a practicing art therapist, the creative experiences I share with my clients have never failed to offer, amaze and make me appreciate the value of what the art process has to offer from our sub-conscious; myself included. Very often, people come into art therapy sessions, claiming they are “non-artists”. The main basis of the therapeutic process in using art is to explore and find one’s own self-expression as an appropriate and healthy way to find meaning or awareness of the many roles we play in life, especially, in today’s hectic world itself. Painter Georgia O’ Keefe stated, “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way- things I had no words for” (1990). Through the safety of the art-making process and images, one learns to acknowledge with the facilitation of the art therapist, the discovery and understanding of “the richness and variety of our stories, their shadows and nuances” to who we truly are (Allen, 1995). The flexibility, spontaneity, and creativity in art making gives play to authentic exploration of the many facets / layers of our often indescribable and neglected emotions.

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time” (Merton, 2002). The creative process in art therapy provides all modes for communication and transformation. Art, never intrusive but perspective, allows exploration within containment, be it the forgiving clay that allows for acknowledgment of mistakes and renewal of persevering attempts or, the natural but unpredictable fluidity of free-flowing paints to experiment alternative options. The creative and therapeutic process in art therapy leads one to authentic play in exploration of ideas within one’s self, where there is no right or wrong. Art is a process, as in most cases of artists, that provides a most important avenue in allowing new discoveries of personal and emotional concerns often parallel to one’s daily challenges in life. It is a mean of knowing and accepting oneself.

Handsome: IVSG is a group exhibition featuring 10 artists, each exploring various representations of gender and masculinity. The exhibition has been inspired by the work of Robert Mapplethorpe, and will be shown at The Substation Gallery from 6 – 18 May 2012. Tim Zeelie caught up with Marla Bendini, the curator, to find out more about the exhibition: TZ: Can you tell us a bit more about the exhibition? Where did the idea for it come about? rainbowartsproject (RAP) and I have been thinking about doing a project inspired by the works and legacy of Robert Mapplethorpe for a while. As an artist working predominantly within the 'selfportrait' genre myself, I was drawn towards Mapplethorpe's selfportraits and have since decided to invite 10 male artists to participate in this exhibition. Each artist will be presenting ideas about gender and masculinity in today's context. TZ: Does this exhibition aspire to be as controversial and confrontational as some of Mapplethorpe's exhibitions have been in the past? During the curatorial process, I noticed varying degrees of selfcensorship emerge, within myself and some of the participating artists. I believe all artists work within certain constraints, and it is important to think about the ways in which artists negotiate these constraints, and what strategies they employ to create meaning within them. TZ: What I find interesting about much of Mapplethorpe's work is not its candid phallocentrism, but the politicising of it. Can we expect the same kind of self-reflexivity in this exhibition? Handsome: IVSG will present a perspective that is not limited to the visual aesthetics of Mapplethorpe, but also the causes he

Enchanting ‌ By B. Jane Cowie
In 2008 I had the opportunity to create an art glass installation at HarbourFront Place (near Vivo City) Singapore. It was one of the first major artworks I designed and created for a public space. Previously my arts practice focused on plinth and/or wall pieces for exhibitions in galleries. For larger projects it is important to discuss and present my ideas to the client and find the most suitable art concept for the space. Still it is the physicality of the material and the making that I really love. I made the blown and hot sculptured glass at the Canberra Glassworks in Australia. Due to the size of the pieces I needed to direct a team of glassblowers. We worked tirelessly together for 3 weeks to complete over 170 pieces required for the installation. The scale and excitement of the project immediately turned heads in Australia, as numerous reporters from local papers rushed to see the spectacle, take photos and report on the glassmaking event I was orchestrating. With 9 skilled glassmakers on the hot shop floor at any one time and 2 glory holes burning bright, there was plenty of hot glass action to be seen. The massive job of packing the fragile glass and shipping it to Singapore was next. Once the container was on the sea, I returned to Singapore to make the metal stems to hold the glass flowers aloft. I spent several weeks at Moki Marine, a local Singaporean metal fabricator, to test the weight, height and load strengths of the metal rods as well as develop unique fixtures and fittings. When creating an art glass installation it is necessary to plan and think through every detail. As the installations only come together during installation and it is only then, as the final piece is fixed in place, that I can see the artwork materialize as envisioned. It is a wonderful moment when I finally see the work complete.

I strive to create installations that look effortless, like it was meant to be there, as if it was always there. I carefully consider the surround building structure, the colours of the space and aspects as viewers approach the artwork. At HarbourFront Place, within the tight geometry of the smoked glass walls, the flowers look alive, their metal stems sprouting directly from the building’s foundations. Sheltered by the surrounding building, the artwork is exposed to the rains that fall through the overhead louvers and sea breezes that swirl through the building’s open entrance area. The flowers appear precariously beautiful as they sway in the breeze. The pure beauty of the colours within the glass will never fade. The HarborFront Flowers continue to bloom and enchant visitors to the site. Flicker photographer fanatics try to arrive when the midday sun passes directly overhead to outdo each another with the “best shot” as the glass glows brilliantly with colour against the black marble of the reflection pond. Fast becoming a destination for tourists and locals alike, those who are lucky enough to work within the building complex have the pleasure to see the many subtle changes of colour and light as they pass by the artwork each day. Buddha Meets Ganesha An Aesthetic Congregation of Two Global Icons
03 – 16 May The Gallery of Gnani Arts, #01-17, Tanglin Shopping Centre
This much-anticipated exhibition salutes to two immensely dynamic genres (art depicting Ganesha and art depicting the Buddha) that possess an appeal that is massive and absolutely international, with an undeniable influence over the art market and the heritage sector, regardless of one’s religious or racial affiliation. Indeed, this rare aesthetic congregation commands an objective perspective from the inquisitive viewer. Buddha Meets Ganesha: An Aesthetic Congregation of Two Global Icons is the first art exhibition at the new gallery space of The Gallery of Gnani Arts (founded in 2003) at Tanglin Shopping Centre. The shopping centre is one of the oldest in Singapore and it is undoubtedly a haven for art and antique. Being inevitably encapsulated within the realm of popular images, we are certainly acquainted with the visual possibilities deriving from Ganesha, the popular Hindu god, and the Buddha, the ultimate epitome of divine/spiritual enlightenment. However, this contemporary art exhibition is neither about the recontextualisation of traditional images nor is it about any controversial comparison between religious/mythological beliefs. Indeed, this first-of-its-kind exhibition, which was conceptualised two years ago by curator Vidhya Gnana Gouresan, is about the participating artists' creative yet sensitive treatment of the many perspectives in which the mighty concepts of the two global cultural icons can combine aesthetically on a philosophical, art historical or a purely visual basis. All of the seven participating artists are based in Singapore. J. Kalidass is an Art Educator with Singapore’s Ministry of Education. Upon being trained in the art of painting at LASALLE College of the Arts (Singapore), Kalidass completed his Bachelors in Contemporary Arts at the University of Tasmania (Australia).

“I control liquid, I use colour, and I try to choreograph these different elements together. There’s a lot of internal rigour to the process, but at the same time it is about chance.” ~ Ian Davenport
Former Turner Prize nominee, Ian Davenport is celebrated for his way of expressing the endless possibilities of abstract art. The artist is recognised for his intense and unconventional painting practice, working with a crescendo of colours orchestrated in rows of lines. His distinctive creative process involves the pouring of paint with an industrial syringe over the body of a working surface, allowing the line of colour to ebb and flow into saturated puddles. Within the stripes and sections, Davenport would literally count the seconds involved in each pour of the paint – deeming it similar to a musical beat. Sometimes this entire process takes place in happenstance and other times, under the pressure of a calculated tilt of the surface. Creating diptychs, triptychs, singular works and at the same time enjoying the culmination of a large-scale monumental piece, the artist’s principles are deeply rooted in colour, rhythm, timing, control and chance. As the most prominent contemporary of post-painterly abstraction, Ian Davenport has injected new life to the practice of painting. The artist consistently creates complex colour arrangements in vertical lines of varying widths. Starting out to only have had experimented with monochromatic or subtle hues, he expanded his repertoire and proceeded to work with bright, vibrant tones from animated sitcoms in popular culture – such as The Simpsons. His works are formal and calculated, but also vulnerable to unassailable forces of gravity and chance. Seeking inspiration from Italian frescoes, cars, street signs, and Flamenco, Davenport works by pouring gloss paint from heavy-duty syringes spaced along the top of the working surface, and then tilting it, or simply allowing the paint to overflow and ooze into concentric puddles. The Fountain Of Lamneth A Visual Arts Exploration of a Song
Till 25 May Gajah Gallery In the exhibition The Fountain of Lamneth, seven artists explore experimental methodologies in expressing and showcasing art. The lyrics and architectural form of the song The Fountain of Lamneth by rock music group Rush, from the album Caress of Steel 1975 are freely interpreted. The Fountain of Lamneth is often interpreted as a journey of a person, faced with various obstacles throughout his life; starting from his childhood till death. Through this project, the themes of The Fountain of Lamneth are borrowed as analogies to observe a current inclination in contemporary Indonesian art practice that leads to the excavation of ethereal ideas such as darkness, absurdity, mysticism, immortality, illusionary truth, the conscious mind. The artists involved in this project have shown mature conceptions through their works and how they relate to the song. Each artist elaborates on a section from the main song: Andry Mochamad – Didacts and Narpets; Bagus A. Pandega – In the Valley; Dita Gambiro – Panacea; Henrycus Napitsunargo – Bacchus Plateua; Prilla Tania – The Fountain; Syagini Ratnawulan – No One at the Bridge; RE Hartanto – Overall Impression of The Fountain of Lamneth. Cheong Soo Pieng A Collection of Sketches by One of Singapore’s Most Celebrated First Generation Artists
30 Apr – 27 May artcommune gallery, Blk 231, Bain Street, Bras Basah Complex
This exhibition commemorates the 60th anniversary of the 1952 Bali trip made by Cheong Soo Pieng, Chen Wen Hsi, Chen Chong Swee and Liu Kang. A pioneer of the Nanyang art movement and a leading light in the development of art in Singapore, Cheong Soo Pieng (b.1917 – 1983) has been revered as a dynamic modern artist whose remarkable spirit and oeuvre continue to inspire many. Most noted for his exquisite amalgamation of forms and techniques derived from both the Western and Chinese painting traditions, his bold and inventive compositions of Southeast Asian life in particular, never cease to fascinate critics and collectors. Over the years, much has been explored about Cheong’s artistic journey and his relentless experiments across various mediums and forms. A close examination of the artist’s legacy also reveals that a huge fraction of Cheong’s life was devoted to his travels and sketches. The landmark trip to Bali in 1952 that inspired Chen Wen Hsi, Chen Chong Swee, Liu Kang and Cheong himself to reinvent some groundbreaking pictorial styles culminating to the Nanyang art movement has been regarded as a ‘watershed’ moment in the development of local art. On this trip alone, Cheong amassed an astonishing 300 pieces of sketches. These sketches provided crucial references or were reworked by the artist in his studio. In 1959, Cheong took more than a month’s leave from his lecturing post at NAFA to embark on an expedition to Borneo. Drawn by the unique flavours and life on the island, much of his time was spent collecting drawing materials amidst the longhouses in the jungles where native tribes such as the Dayak resided. Once again, no less than 300 sketches were accomplished before the artist returned to his studio in Singapore. For Cheong, sketching was always more than just an efficient method for capturing the form and essence of a subject. He was a highly motivated and disciplined artist who regarded sketching on paper as an important exercise to sharpen his painting skills. Many of his sketches were products of elaborate planning and decisive executions. As highlighted by Tan Choh Tee, a younger

artist who had embarked on painting trips with Cheong, “He enjoyed sketching while travelling. Whether to Sarawak, Indonesia or the east coast of Malaysia, he produced many sketches. Cheong’s sketches show simple but decisive lines, composition was well thought through, and (he) would return to his studio in Singapore to experiment using these sketches.” Whether it was to record the sights and movements on location or to develop a scaffold for his painting, Cheong would always organise his compositions in the most meticulous fashion before commencing on his sketches. The same sketches would subsequently be converted into full-scale oil or ink paintings. There were even instances when Cheong would decide to combine certain elements or details derived from two or three different sketches in the course of producing one, single painting. All this is evident from the extensive collection of beautiful sketches (and drawings) left behind by the artist, many of which bear almost exact resemblances to their counterparts –the eventual paintings rendered in colours. This also explains why many of Cheong’s sketches look to be complete drawings in themselves. The strokes and lines were always so elegantly and purposefully expressed. Cheong’s sketches were usually executed with a pencil, a fountain or a ballpoint pen, depending on which drawing device actually accompanied the artist. To sharpen his mind, Cheong also developed an important routine of meditation before embarking on his sketch. Friends and family members were used to beholding the familiar sight of the artist perched at his studio’s couch with a pipe in his mouth or between his fingers, immersing in solitude and contemplation.

Dialogue Among Trees Paintings by Terence Tan & Lynn Lim By Terence Tan Chee Wah
11 – 27 May Artists Alliance SG, Blk B, #03-17, Goodman Arts Centre Dialogue Among Trees is a collaborative showcase by two visual artists, Tan Chee Wah Terence and Lim Li Yin Lynn. Terence paints solely with Chinese ink on rice paper and Lynn creates with mixed media on paper to put together their personal expression of trees in nature. While trees, with their unique shapes, represent some of nature's most engaging forms, Terence and Lynn see them in different ways. Terence paints trees luscious with leaves; Lynn inclines towards the ones that are bare, almost stripped off their barks. They, however, share the reverence for space and the feeling it can instill in the viewers. Terence’s series of paintings re-examines the relationship between man and nature. The ideas behind the works go beyond the existing issues of environmental destruction to concern more with the moral and ethical aspect of mankind. The unmanageable chaos in this present world is broadly due to the disaster brought about by humans. The paintings lead the viewers back to the origin, where humans are in harmony with nature. In Lynn’s paintings, she observes the way that every tree transforms and goes through its existence uninhibitedly. She admires that each tree seems to have a beautiful soul of its own and embraces its unimpeded process with much grace and exuberance. Terence obtained his Diploma in Fine Art from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1990 and a Bachelor of Art (Design) with major in Multimedia from Curtin University of Technology in 1997. He pursued his Master in Electronic Arts from Middlesex University in 2004. He learned Chinese ink painting from the Singapore painter Tan Oe Pang. Lynn obtained her Diploma in Fine Art from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Art (Fashion Design) from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. She further obtained an MA Design for Textile Futures from Central St Martins, University of Arts London. The exhibition is open Fri – Sun: 1 – 5 pm, and Mon – Thu by appointment only. Please call Terence at 9683 1579 for enquiries.

Illucynation Opening the Mind’s Eye To Sophie’s World
Till 02 Jul tcc - The Connoisseur Concerto “The Gallery” 51 Circular Road
Three talented Singapore-based artists, Sarah Bridget, Rudy Djoharnaen and Erzan Adam display their abstract illustrations based on the popular philosophical Norwegian novel ‘Sophie’s World’ by Jostein Gaarder. The exhibition is intended to rouse the interest of ordinary teenagers and parents by painting a vivid representation of the book to motivate the public towards living in Sophie’s shell and deliberate slightly more about the seemingly regular world they reside in. While intended for young adults, ‘Sophie’s World’ is an intriguing read for all ages, serving as a reminder or introduction to the intricate essence that is philosophy. The depictions themselves are entertaining, colourful, accessible and most importantly, contain snippets of phrases which follow Jostein’s ethos of writing from a child’s perspective, exploring their sense of astonishment about the world around them. Viewers are encouraged to create their very own interpretation through a workshop and storytelling session, while teachers can discover a highly useful and versatile source for facilitating discussions in regards to philosophical questions.
The artists’ manifesto; a string of thought-provoking verses.

Ian Davenport: Between the Lines. Former Turner Prize nominee, Ian Davenport is celebrated for his way of expressing the endless possibilities of abstract art. The artist is recognised for his intense and unconventional painting practice, working with a crescendo of colours orchestrated in rows of lines. His distinctive creative process involves the pouring of paint with an industrial syringe over the body of a working surface, allowing the line of colour to ebb and flow into puddles. 11 May – 07 Jul

Just This Moment. A stunning collection of mixed media paintings, bronze sculptures and bold line drawings by Melanie McCollin-Walker and Camie Lyons. Camie’s and Melanie’s works, remarkable in their own right, take on a deeper resonance when exhibited together. Together their works are elemental, experimental, extraordinary; a surprising symphony of important ideas about memory and perception. With Melanie in Singapore and Camie in Sydney, the artists worked separately and unknown to each other for their first collaboration; and yet we have a delightful synergy resulting in a contagious sense of joy. 24 – 26 May Meet the Artists. 24 May, 7.30pm

PHANTASMAGORIA. This exhibition features a body of 20 selected artworks by Thai artist Montree Moungkun. With his creative practice grounded strongly in the cultural research of folklore and spirituality, Montree has developed an unrestrained approach of semi-abstraction, using vibrant colours and languid brushstrokes to create layered narratives of the mystical, the naive and the twisted. Many of his large artworks on show, including a 6-meter long scroll, bear intriguing semblance to elements of phantasmagoria and fantasy. As an emerging tour-de-force in Thailand’s contemporary art scene, Montree has since completed his major solo exhibition at the National Art Gallery, Bangkok, and is in preparation for his second show slated with them in 2014. 11 May – 17 Jun

Till 02 Jul
