Creating Changes I Remember By Anna Wong
A group of 8 seniors from a senior day care centre gathered for art making. They were guided on an imaginary walk as they closed their eyes. Then they were asked to put on paper what they saw. Aunt Bee (pseudonym), 85, wasted no time. She dipped her brush into the palette and captured the image. After a busy while, she raised her right index finger and asked for another piece of art paper. She painted again.

As the art making session came to an end, group members were given the opportunity to talk about their artwork. Aunt Bee held up her first artwork (Figure 1) and said, “Rambutans!” and the second artwork and said, “Rambutan tree” (Figure 2). A sense of achievement seemingly prevailed. Pointing to the red image in Figure 1, someone asked Aunt Bee, “But what is that on the right?” It seemed the word was just at the tip of her tongue but she paused. After a moment of silence, Aunt Bee burst out laughing. Her laughter was so contagious, everyone laughed with her. Some laughed till they welled up in tears.

Someone asked again, “But what is that?” Aunt Bee composed herself and said, “… I forgot.” As they shared, some recalled that they have never laughed like that in years. The seniors have become comfortable, making art with one another. They were spontaneous, authentic and more importantly, it was safe. They started with the usual anxiety. Some often said, “I cannot paint” or “I cannot even write my name”. But by the fourth session, they overcame the intimidation of art materials and the blank piece of white paper. They could also speak freely about their artwork. In Singapore, many of us are familiar with children making art. However, it often raises eyebrows when people hear that seniors also participate in art. Weisberg and Wilder (2001) quoted Dr Gene Cohen saying, “The truth is that creativity is not just for geniuses …. Creativity, which I defined as our innate capacity for growth, is empowering. It is the energy that allows us to think a different thought, express ourselves in a novel way. It enables us to view life as an opportunity for exploration, discovery, and an expanding sense of self … and it knows no age.” (p. 23). The creative process of art making is a multisensory experience. Art making creates focus, frees emotions, stimulate memory and keeps seniors lively. It can also reduce anxiety, increases self-esteem and generates confidence (Buchalter, 2011).

Very often, as sessions begin, the seniors relate their lethargy and pains. Frowns and sighs are common. However, as soon as art making begins, you can see them channeling their energy into the thought-provoking task (Figure 3). Encouraging seniors to talk about their artwork, allows time to impart life stories, wisdom and understand further what it all means to them. Along the way, self-awareness can also be derived. As people age, the loss of the freedom of mobility, loss of control and perhaps more than often, the loss of choice, may be commonly felt. Art therapy sessions incorporate opportunities where the freedom to choose, make decisions, be responsible and gain access to control, can be experienced once again. Art exercises stimulate the brain. Following research in neuroscience, mental stimulations can bring about new connections of neurons in the brain (Doidge, 2007). Doidge also mentioned that stimulating brain activities can slow down agerelated cognitive decline and even, improve functioning. Brain plasticity talks about the brain’s ability to change, even among seniors. In the study of Mechelli et al. (as cited in Hass-Cohen and Carr, 2009), brain plasticity is shown to be possible as neuronal activity increases from increased brain usage, thickening gray matter and resulting in heavier brains. It was also found by Allen, Bruss and Damasio (as cited in Hass-Cohen and Carr, 2009) that heavier brains are less vulnerable to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. Local news reported that seniors in Singapore can be “lonely, sad and depressed”, even as they live with their families (Basu, 2012). Art therapy sessions can serve as an opportunity for seniors to have a meaningful activity as family members need to go about

their busy lives. The presence of the therapist provides a ‘safe place’, where trust and security are developed, where feelings are expressed. Art therapy for seniors can be conducted in individual sessions or small groups. Sharing in groups decreases social isolation and increases community connection and interpersonal support. Group sharing develops greater insight to life challenges that in turn helps to reduce depressive feelings and can perhaps instill the sense of hope (Yalom, 2005). Sounding out Joel Ong By Tim Zeelie
Open Call is an annual showcase of visual, performance and sound art at The Substation. Held annually in September to celebrate The Substation’s birthday, this year’s Sound Art Open Call recipient, Joel Ong, has been making a lot of noise in The Substation Gallery lately. Tim Zeelie caught up with him to find out for about his installation, Wagon. TZ: Can you tell us a bit more about your project. What can viewers expect to see, or hear? JO: Wagon is a site specific installation that consists of a number of freely moving sound wagons fitted with sensors that react to the movements of visitors. The first sound that people will hear when they enter the gallery is the 'ring' of the space itself, induced through the amplification of resonant frequencies. As the wagons move around they also interfere with these frequencies, causing interesting changes in the pitch and character of the sounds. Theses sonic changes aren't large scale – they are subtle and encourage a heightened sense of listening. TZ: To what extent has the history of noise, modernism, music and mechanical production influenced your art, and how did you go from having a background in life sciences to making kinetic sculptures? JO: Sound art does indeed have a background too diverse to cohere into a definitive canon. It is obvious that every artist is thoroughly indebted to the advances in modern technologies that have enabled far-reaching innovations in the ways we create, propagate and publicise. My somewhat unconventional background in the life sciences has played a vital role in my art, and it is credit to my ecology classes that I am particularly interested in the interactions between objects and their acoustic environments. I was also mentored by Prof Lonce Wyse at NUS who is himself strategically positioned between multiple academic disciplines; so much of what he finds exciting about interdisciplinary potential has rubbed off on me. Both art and science play a critical role in evaluating our acoustic environments, now not only saturated with the sounds of vehicles and machinery, but also with the amplified, disembodied voices of

The Substation Soapbox radiophonic and telegraphic frequencies. It seems natural for me in the next season of my research to further develop current modes of techno-scientific listening and augmented hearing. With Wagon, we explore the physicality of sound in The Substation Gallery and the effects of our own bodies within it. I have long been interested in works featuring simple uses of pure tones to create audible patterns, so the addition of acoustic feedback also enhances this experience of architectural space. In its developmental phase, this project also incorporates a DIY approach in designing these wagons. To that extent, working under the guidance of prolific sound artist and sculptor Zulkifle Mahmod, who is also the Sound Art Open Call 2012 curator, has been a truly rewarding experience. TZ: Is there something particular about the medium of sound and audio that you prefer over other more traditionally representational mediums? JO: I think one of the main features of the sounding arts is the openness to exploring all sound (not just music) as being intrinsically affective. I like that it’s a medium that’s always present, and can be found everywhere – even within the chaotic sound environment of Singapore's ever changing landscape. I arrived at Bild-Werk in the middle of summer, but it was not as warm as I thought it would be, especially without an operational hot glass furnace. Bild-Werk is an International Summer Academy for the Arts, located in a scenic valley in the Bavarian Forest, Germany. Glass is the focus of the Summer Academy that offers glass blowing, engraving, casting and glass painting workshops. The school also runs oil painting, print making, ceramic sculpture and wood carving classes, attracting artists and art enthusiasts from many European countries. I was invited this year especially to teach glass blowing as part of the 25 year celebration of the Academy’s continued history. However, the furnace had not arrived in time for the beginning of class. Normally, the furnace is the heart of the Summer Academy, yet for some years the furnace had not been in operation, and so this year they had especially organised a new furnace to be brought in for my hot glass course. So there was a chill in the air when I arrived… The chill did not last long as I lit the glory holes and turned on as many kilns as possible (5 in total – mostly all at the same time) to get the glass hot enough to pick up from the kiln and/or using a pasterelli plate. Once picked up, we then heated the glass in the glory hole to a temperature of approximately 900 degrees Celsius to become soft, malleable and HOT. My students were mostly Germany or Swiss, with one student from Brazil. All my students had some hot glass experience and were eager to learn more about working in this new type of ‘hot glass situation’. We picked up pieces of glass, bottles, jam jars, rolled up fused panels and Bullseye plates to create a diverse variety of vessels and sculptural forms.

This new way to work with glass hot – without a furnace – is a technique I have been pioneered in Singapore for the past year. With at least 2 kilns and a make shift glory hole I have conducted a series of hot glass murrini roll up workshops once a month with a small group of enthusiasts. I am always improvising and innovating to create hot glass making exercises for students to practice basic skills and gain knowledge. Working with hot glass is an intensive activity, requiring a good understanding of how to work together, communicate ideas and more importantly have fun. As students became familiar with the facilities, how to move with hot glass and how to move around each other, team working skills and communication increased. Each student came with their unique abilities, personality and creative focus and within the 3 weeks we realised many exciting results. The team assists individuals make their work, while each member of the team has something unique to offer the group. Working within a team means that individuals have the ability to realise their works, to make artworks they could not achieve alone. Slowly personalities unfolded as we found there was a wealth of life experience and creativity within the group. As individuals we can only achieve so much, but as a team we can certainly shine bright – as bright as a gather of hot glass. To see photos of the workshop check out the AGS Education facebook page. ReDot Fine Art Gallery hosts the first international exhibition of the works from Mimili Maku Arts, an indigenous owned and directed art centre. Mimili Maku Arts is located in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, in the far north west of South Australia, where some of the most exciting, fresh and contemporary Aboriginal art of recent years has emerged. The artists of Mimili Maku have been painting for almost a decade but the art centre didn’t gain wider recognition until Milatjari Pumani, a respected senior Yankunytjatjara woman, started painting in 2008 at the age of 80, propelling this remote community into the spotlight of the modern Australian contemporary art scene. Today the art centre works with more than 50 artists, men and women, young and old from Mimili and the four surrounding homelands of Perentie Bore, Wanmara, Blue Hills and Sandy’s Bore. The whimsical works currently being produced at Mimili Maku Arts continue to attract attention with their traditional imagery, symbols and narrative combined with the abstract wild application of colour and texture. Artists retain individual styles, differing modes of application, brushstrokes and colour combinations, but all manage to create fluid pieces depicting mountain ranges, waterholes, caves and other topographical elements of the land, embedded with sacred spiritual connection. Equal in traditional appeal and contemporary resonance, Mimili Maku works are considered some of the most exciting to emerge from the APY Lands in recent years and are found in all important private and public collections in Australia and overseas focused on Aboriginal art. This exhibition showcases superb works by the legendary Milatjari Pumani, her daughters Ngupulya and Betty Pumani, Tuppy Ngintja Goodwin and Kathleen Tjapalyi amongst others. A group of artists and the art centre manager, Ms. Hannah Grace, travel to Singapore to attend the exhibition opening on the 5th Sep. to add their perspective on desert life and the mysteries that are captured within the stories embedded in the 30+ works on show.

Blossoming Where Songlines Meet By Nicolas Rothwell, from: The Australian
RED domes, veiled skies, heat haze, mulga – the country of the Yankunytjatjara holds the patterns and the rhythms of its landscape out of easy reach. Here, in the remote Everard Ranges of northern South Australia, an elusive new phase in the desert art movement is under way. It has been taking shape quietly these past three years, in the small community of Mimili, far off the well-worn art tourism track. Even more than the recent flowerings of new work in nearby communities, the art of Mimili speaks most clearly when read as a pure dictation from the country, a translation of natural language into paint. The initial chapters of this story were modest. For the moment, Mimili Maku art centre still occupies a tiny stone house built in a declivity that floods whenever rain pours off the adjacent rocks. Painting began here almost a decade ago in fitful fashion, but gained momentum only when one of the most striking artists of the desert region, Milatjari Pumani, took up her dotting stick for the first time in 2008, at the age of 80. There is a full-time co-ordinator based in the community, and several of Pumani's ultra-talented children and relatives paint regularly. A new art centre building will be completed in the heart of Mimili by the end of next year. A swift transition, an ambitious blueprint – but art, its production, its control and stewardship, has long been preoccupations of the men and women living in this landscape. Drawing and painting first became popular activities in the rudimentary arts and crafts centre set-up at Ernabella Mission to the west more than 50 years ago. An art studio for the Stuart Highway tourist market opened in the neighbouring community of Indulkana to the east in the early 1980s; but the explosion of art-making at Mimili has proved subtly different in emphasis from other recent "start-ups" of community-based art centres in the desert lands. Mimili's importance rests in the surrounding country and the past: the events that took place in the ranges nearby during ancestral times. The community lies close to myriad tjukurpa or dreaming sites. This geography makes it something akin to a cultural guardpost watching over the land. There is a virtual expressway of interweaving, criss-crossing song-cycle tracks all through the country to the west. Deep in the hills on the horizon is the maku or witchetty grub dreaming. One of the key sites is Antara, a pair of prominent rockholes aligned in parallel that mark the 18

Cover Story passage of creator beings. It is at Antara that increase rituals for the maku are performed – and, unsurprisingly, paired rockhole symbols feature repeatedly in the work of Mimili's most successful artists. On the floor of the main painting room, watched by a pack of attentive camp-dogs, Tuppy Goodwin is putting the finishing touches to a large canvas drenched in colour: pinks, blues, mauves – and once the eye catches the sets of paired waterholes facing out in multiple directions the painting comes into focus as a dizzyingly complex topographic work. Close by, a half-completed piece by Mimili's artistic matriarch, Milatjari, hangs on the whitewashed wall. Beneath it one of her daughters, Ngupulya Pumani, is embarked on a larger version of the same story, hands moving slowly as she traces out its designs in her own close-dotted style. Arc, tangent line, field, rockhole circle – the vocabulary of the canvas is picked out in the dots of different scales, in a mesh of colours that create depth: pale pink on dark pink, sunshine on darker flame orange-red. The technique is a natural refinement of the first works made by Milatjari, which rely strongly on the contrast between dark ground and dot curtain and overcoat of surface pattern in restricted, clearly legible colour sets, so that the story-cycle symbols are present and yet softened, presented as artifice, as an invitation to appreciate tradition as a form of art. And then there's the "puzzle artist" of Mimili, silent, halfleaning against the wall, lost in her work. Kathleen Tjapalyi masks the strength of her symbols beneath veiling, intricate designs. Now

in her early 70s and at the apex of the desert's cultural knowledge pyramid, she began painting only a year ago. She works slowly, painstakingly. Her first canvases were startling. They used colour in an unfamiliar way, putting forward not harmonies of shades but abrupt passages of contrast. There was heavy dotting. The style emphasised the icons in the painting and obscured them, held them back. The emblems – hooks, meanders, bifurcating branches – recalled the work of Amata's most cryptic female artist, Wawiriya Burton; the look and choice in colour had something of the manner of two painters from early days at Wingellina, Nyakul and Alkuwari Dawson, now dead. In a testing commercial environment, with well-judged, eyecharming canvases pouring by the hundred from art centres across the bush, this was something else. It conveyed a message from a distant world. What was that message? The narratives embedded in Tjapalyi's work, like many of the region's story-cycles, had a sombre edge: the tale of the children confronted by a child-eating woman spirit west of Antara rockhole; the tale of the ngura atiya, the nest where a flesh-eating eagle stared out across the landscape, until a left-handed hero chopped it down: all the bones of the raptor's victims are still visible, embedded in the stone around the peak on the song-line running from Carmeena to Sandy Bore. The tone of these stories seemed to lurk in the paint of Tjapalyi's early efforts: they made for overwhelming art. It was almost too much. She damped down her colours and increased the density of her markings to yield the look she opts for today, brick reds, desert ochres, dusty pinks, cast like a shimmer across the canvas and the sky-blue ground. Hard stories, ornate art: the alchemy that transforms culture story into pattern. Such is the business of Mimili Maku, an outpost among outposts, the experimental studio where the desert art journey is taking its latest turn. What next, in the years ahead, as Mimili increasingly becomes an official centre for the long-delayed intervention into the Aboriginal lands of desert South Australia, more and more regulated, monitored, controlled? What next, with a plague of problems mounting across the lands, identified with ever-escalating urgency by a cadre of outside experts? The artists have their appointed tasks, and their forthcoming exhibitions, but the unvoiced question lingers for remote communities across their region. What can beauty on canvas strengthen or help preserve?

The declaration of the Surrealist Manifesto in 1924 by the French poet, André Breton, marked the unification of the artistic, imagination, fantasy, automatism, together with a particular discipline of science, i.e. psychology. The absurd visual construction or the wild imagination and fantasy, is somewhat validated, that there is unconscious spirit that needs to be channelled out through art. Initiated by Breton, followed by other artists, including Jean Arp, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Frida Kahlo, René Magritte, Andre Masson, Joan Miró and a few others, they explored the realm of the “unconscious” to find the basis of the “new language of expression” that can be well articulated. In the next development, “the surrealistic language” has been vigorously flourished and influenced many artists until now, at least in the “language of expression”. The language of Salvador Dali, René Magritte, just to name a few, seems to have been recorded in the memories of many different painters in the world, including in Indonesia. It is a common practice in the art to influence and be influenced by other artists in their artistic creation. However, although the style might be the same but the content might be different. Similarly, the terminology of “surrealism” in the context of Indonesian art should be viewed in this light, as the “surrealistic language” in Indonesia has been influenced by many different factors, including historical, cultural and local knowledge. The beginning of works with surrealist tendencies in Indonesia started in the city of Yogyakarta in the 1990s. of imagination, spiritualism and the myth. Besides these artists in Yogyakarta, there is a group of other surrealist artists working in different cities in East Java. Over the years, these groups of artists continue to work in similar style, while at the same time, there are a few other contemporary artists in different parts of Indonesia working in similar tendencies although using different visual language. REVISITED: 3 decades of surrealist tendencies in Indonesian art aims to highlight and give an introduction to works that portray the “surrealistic tendency” in Indonesian art in the past three decades. Featuring eight art works by four artists that represent the different generations: Ivan Sagita (b. 1957), Sigit Santoso (b. 1964), Putu Wirantawan (b.1972) and Dita Gambiro (b.1986), the exhibition should be viewed as an embryo project to trigger more comprehensive future projects. The exhibition aspires to raise discussions about the following issues. How do you see “the surrealistic language” of the Indonesian artists then and today? Is there similarity or is it different? Is there a significant development that can be seen? How is it in relation to Surrealism in the West? This, hopefully, help form the basic discourse of “the surrealistic language” or the “surrealistic tendency” in Indonesian art and the relevancy of these works in the bigger artistic map of Indonesian art today. ‘Verdant Vistas’ is a solo show by eminent artist Surya Prakash, presented by Fiidaa Art at The Arts House. This exhibition features about twenty of the artist’s works done in his signature style of large landscapes lush with greenery and brilliant reflections on water. Surya Prakash’s landscapes present a perfect bonding between colour and foliage thus creating a stunning panorama on canvas. “To me art is life ... a higher calling. I cannot imagine my life without art. This is who I am; all of my being, every breath I take, every nuance of my life”, is what the artist says about his art. This artist was born in 1940 and has been in the forefront of the art movement in the Hyderabad region, organizing camps, workshops et al. His artistic career spans more than four decades, and has been marked by several solo and group exhibitions held both within India as well as in Poland, Germany, Iran, Czechoslovakia, Russia, Hungary, the United Kingdom, Syria, France, and the United States. His work has found place in numerous forums including the India Triennale and the Paris Biennale. He has been a jury member and commissioner for national and state level exhibitions as well as the fifth India Triennale. The recipient of the National Award and gold medals from the Andhra Pradesh Lalit Kala Academy and the Hyderabad Art Society, Surya Prakash has been honoured with the title "Kala Vibhushan" by the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society in New Delhi. This artist’s paintings have found a home in several museums, corporate houses, banks, institutions and in other private and public collections in India and overseas. The venue of the show, The Arts House at the Old Parliament, opened in 2004 as an arts and heritage centre. The old building was restored, and the furnishings and the design were preserved. The Chambers were converted into a function room where music performances could be held. Art exhibitions and other functions are also regularly held at the gallery, which has Tuscan style columns and cornices. Fiidaa Art was founded in 2006 by Sangeeta Tibrewala. Based in Singapore, Fiidaa Art aims to provide Art lovers and Art investors an opportunity to view and purchase Indian Contemporary Art from all across India. Capturing Paradise Paintings of Bali by Singaporean Artists

A Hindu-dominant island in Indonesia, Bali is often being described as a tropical paradise, and has served as a massive source of inspiration for many artists in the Southeast Asian region and beyond. Since the early 50’s, many Singaporean artists, young and old, have flocked to Bali in search of fresh visual references and returned deeply enthralled by the rustic charms and cultural richness of the island. Having eluded the radar of urbanisation, Bali stands as an accessible site partitioned from modern civilisation. Many are attracted to its beauty and simplicity, and regard the island as an idyllic landscape where the colourful and vibrant indigenous way of life remains relatively unscarred by modernity. As elucidated by one of Singapore’s most outstanding contemporary artists, Lim Tze Peng, “Bali is a paradise for artists. Art is plentiful in the Balinese culture, the architecture and landscape in Bali are beautiful, and the people are simple.” There can be little doubt that the island has played an instrumental role in shaping the artistic oeuvres of many artists in

Singapore. Since the time of Singapore’s 1st generation artists, Bali has often been sought for and captured as an exotic paradise, perhaps no less than how the island of Tahiti might have stood in the eyes of the visionary Post-Impressionist artist, Paul Gauguin. In fact, the landmark trip to Bali in 1952 that inspired Cheong Soo Pieng, Chen Wen Hsi, Chen Chong Swee and Liu Kang to redefine their aesthetic approaches and reinvent some groundbreaking pictorial styles culminating to the Nanyang art movement has been widely acknowledged as a ‘watershed’ moment in the development of modern art in Singapore. In this exhibition, artcommune gallery is proud to present a series of Bali-inspired paintings accomplished by some of Singapore’s most distinguished artists – Ang Ah Tee, Cheong Soo Pieng, Lim Tze Peng, Lim Yew Kuan, Ong Kim Seng, Tan Choh Tee, Tong Chin Sye, Ho Sou Ping and Hong Sek Chern. The works on exhibit range from oil, watercolour to Chinese ink, and include rarely seen elaborate sketches by 1st generation master, Cheong Soo Pieng. This exhibition facilitates an entry point into how Bali has come to influence the artistic endeavours of many Singaporean artists over the years. In supplying rich visual references and exotic motifs, its flavourful iconography has become deeply encapsulated within the evolving oeuvres of these artists. The exhibition also examines how Bali had helped shaped the emergence of what has come to be known today as the Nanyang style of art.

Pameran Poskad 2012 Art in Postcard-Size

Pameran Poskad 2012 is a group exhibition of postcard-sized artworks that is open to anyone and everyone who would like to participate. The fourth installment of Pameran Poskad is presented at Viridian Art House and Galeri Utama with more than 400 artists from 31 countries, including internationally recognised artists such as Jimmy Ong (Singapore), Donna Ong (Singapore), Genevieve Chua (Singapore), BenCab (Philippines), Wilson Shieh (Hong Kong), R.E. Hartanto (Indonesia), Jiha Moon (Korea), Takashi Kuribayashi (Japan) and Ahmad Zakii Anwar (Malaysia). All artworks in this show fit within a postcard-sized sleeve and come in various forms that expand the interpretation of the “postcard.” Works range from two-dimensional prints, drawings and paintings to three-dimensional objects. The artwork size restriction keeps the works small and limits the price range,

allowing the everyday consumer to purchase an original piece of art. Pameran Poskad creates a fun and inspiring environment where people come to appreciate and collect works by artists from all demographics. Not just artists from the international art community participate, businessmen, students and children also submit their creations. While this exhibition includes works by established artists, it also encourages those who never draw or those who do not consider themselves an artist to give art-making a try! The concept behind Pameran Poskad is to make art more accessible to the public, where people from various backgrounds come together to share the joy of making, exhibiting and viewing. With no artwork labels displaying artists’ names, the process of looking makes for an exciting journey of discovery! The Pameran Poskad exhibition in Singapore was initiated in 2005 by Tamae Iwasaki and Eitaro Ogawa, a duo that also goes by the name of “Keyakismos.” For Iwasaki and Ogawa, who are also professional printers at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute, art has the possibility to connect people from various locations, cultures and backgrounds. Each artist’s perspective and style creates a visual dialogue between different communities and also provides unique learning experiences. They share the belief that this gift of creativity and art is something everyone should be able to enjoy. This exhibition is about getting people involved in the creative process either through art-making or through the organisation of the show. Solely put together by passionate volunteers, Pameran Poskad is a “people’s” collaborative show from beginning to end. Pameran Poskad 2012 is organised by Tamae Iwasaki, Eitaro Ogawa, Yang Shihui, Teng Yenhui, Izziyana Suhaimi and Sylvia Tsai.

Everything You Ever Wanted Is Right Here – A Solo Exhibition by Dawn Ng. Dawn presents a series of handcrafted photographic and typography-based collages, which explore the notion of "home". This entirely new body of work is a tongue-in-cheek visual documentary of present day Singapore over a four-month period of photojournalism and interviews with locals. The Peranakan Museum presents a Southeast Asianwide view of Peranakan culture.
Emily of Emerald Hill: Singaporean Identity on Stage. An exhibition about one of Singapore’s best known and most loved plays: Emily of Emerald Hill, written by Stella Kon in 1982. Acclaimed by audiences around the world, the play was instrumental in giving expression to Peranakan and Singaporean identity. This exhibition at the Peranakan Museum examines how the play was created, and the different ways it has been performed over the years. Visitors will gain deeper insights into the story, which was inspired by the author’s own experience growing up in a mansion on Emerald Hill.
