Creating Changes From Art to Soul By Clare (Kit Keung)
“Dreams pass into the reality of action. From the action stems the dream again; and this interdependence produces the highest form of living.” Anaïs Nin (1903 – 1977) In July 2011, Professor Dr. Rachel Lev-Wiesel from Haifa University (Israel) planted the first seeds of her dream of expanding the roots of creative arts therapy to Asia. After a year of thorough research and diligent preparation, together with another dreamer, Professor Dr. Bussakorn Binson, from Chulalongkorn University, their common aspiration became a reality in June 2012, when the Asean Music and Creative Arts Therapy Summit in Bangkok received broad participation from international participants. It was also a dream for a newly graduated art therapist like myself, to have the opportunity to attend such a meaningful event, where world-wide experienced clinicians, educators, researchers and creative arts therapists were gathered to share their passion and knowledge on the clinical application of creative arts. Of course, I

Therapy was also thrilled to be reunited with my far-away friends whom I have missed so much since the last international summit in Israel. “Using music [and arts] as a tool of communication, the message we are trying to get across, will not just be better understood, but more importantly, better felt.” Dr. Udom Pejarasangharn (2012)
Figure 2. My beloved friends and mentors, Prof. Rachel & Prof. Binson (Jane)
During the first few days of the summit, Dr. Udom Pejarasangharn along with various presenters set the stage by emphasizing that ‘the world needs empathy’! He recognizes that empathy may not be the immediate solution to all the manmade and natural problems our world is facing today, but confident it is a pathway to love that eventually leads to sustainable world peace. Dr. Udom explained that empathy is important, because it helps us to understand and communicate effectively with our fellow human beings. It is not only about perceiving what others are feeling (cognitive empathy), but also sensing what others are experiencing emotionally (affective empathy). It is also about cultural sensitivity and conflict resolution. Therefore, if we find ways to increase our ability to empathize with one another, we will be one big step closer to the dream of unity. “The best part of life is not just surviving, but thriving with passion and compassion and humor and style and generosity and kindness.” Maya Angelou (Born 1928) Creative art forms, especially music, have long Figure 3. why the medical field has started to pay attention to the use of creativity in addition to medicine and surgical means, to provide individuals with both physical and mental healthcare (holistic) treatments. For instance, after years of devotion in treating cancer patients, Dr. Patravoot Vatanasapt (Bangkok) shared his belief that when medical solutions reaches their limitations to cure physical illness or permanent impairments, the power of music expands its potential to improve the quality of living during the critical survival stages. Meanwhile, well-known musician and professor from France, Dr. Tran Quang Hai (Vietnam) believes that music is all around and within us. He has dedicated himself to teaching how to use overtones, chakra, and sound vibrations within one’s body as a form of music therapy. Indeed, through practicing this technique, many patients who had suffered from throat cancer were able to find their ‘voices’ again. Besides cancer patients, Dr. Pakdee Sudenukarn and his team from Dansi Crown Prince Hospital have been implementing an innovative “1 to 5 Piano” technique tailored for individuals who experience difficulties in learning. By simplifying the conventional music score to a fingers-brain-numbers mapping method, it effectively increases one’s interest, confidence and eventually ability to succeed.
Figure 4. Volunteers were patiently teaching participants on the 1-5 piano method.
“[Love] comes to us in theater in the way we communicate with each other, whether it be a symphony orchestra, or a wonderful ballet, or a beautiful painting, or a play. It's a way of expressing our humanity.” Julie Harris (Born 1925)
Over the following days of the summit, presenters from Bangkok, Israel, India, and Germany continued to introduce us to other modalities of creative arts, including drama, dance, movement and visual arts. It is always an eye-opening and lifeenriching experience to participate in one of these creative therapeutic workshops. Since creativity is very fluid in nature, therefore its improvisational potential to influence different individuals’ body, mind and soul is endless. I personally feel that the soothing effect of music therapy calms my anxiety and softens my heart; while the mirroring technique in drama and movement group therapy simulates life scenarios and

The most impactful moment in fact was during the last session where all the Figure 5. Some of us made music with any tools we had in our hands - some of us sang while some of us danced. And just as Dr. Bussakorn Binson had mentioned at the beginning of the summit, it was indeed a safe and creative place where Figure 6. It was like witnessing a breathtaking performance of an orchestra of humanity. The 6-day summit ended with these joyful sounds echoing in our memories. What follows is the beginning of new ideas, directions, collaboration, responsibilities and challenges in passing on this dream to bring creative arts therapy to every corner of the world. The word ‘world peace’ might at times seem naive and unattainable. However, after this summit, I brought home with me the inspiration, passion and collective belief from all the participants who had contributed in a variety of ways to change vulnerable lives. I am hopeful that one day, we will come to a global awareness of our common humanity, so that the dream of unity will soon become our shared reality. As I said goodbye to all the newly made friends, an old song came to my mind… “Someday we will find the rainbow connection, the lovers, the dreamers and me.” (Rainbow Connection by Paul Williams & Kenneth Ascher, 1979) Figure 7. Susie Lingham By Chelsea Chua
Well known as an art writer, academic, curator and multidisciplinary artist, Susie Lingham wears many hats. This November, Susie presents Turn, a solo exhibiton that captures the different iterations of her art practice. She shares the many aspects of her art making process with Chelsea Chua. CC: What can we expect from Turn? I understand that there will be a performance element to the work? SL: I’m hoping for words, images, and yes, a performance ‘element’ that will figure on the opening night or the Saturday after opening night. This performance is in the process of being ‘conversed’ into being at this time, and will continue to be whittled into formation until the night of the performance. I have invited Sinclair Ang, a multidisciplinary artist and sultan of ‘swing’ and the lindy hop, and Noor Effendy Ibrahim, artistperformer and Artistic Director of The Substation, to work with me on the performance. I will also be inviting a few other musicians to work with me – featuring voice, wind and string instruments. The visual show itself will feature mixed media drawings and text. CC: When was your last solo exhibition, and how do you think your work has evolved since? SL: I don’t believe I’ve had a ‘solo’ exhibition in the conventional sense of the word. In 2004 I conceptualized, directed, scripted, and performed in If the Universe, Between Circle and Ellipse, Slips which was an interdisciplinary performance work held at the same time as the visual show I curated Sounds Like Mirrors. (This was at the now non-existent PKW on Kerbau Road.) My DPhil at the University of Sussex, which was in Literature, Religion and Philosophy, was certainly an intensely ‘solo’ endeavor for me…I completed that in 2008. CC: What is the inspiration behind Turn? SL: My work has always been inspired by ‘turnings’, and ‘becomings’. The word ‘turn’ itself, with all its uncontainable 12

Metaphor helps hold slippery uncertainties just that little while longer. As a verb, noun or adjective, the word turn already ‘spins’, and as an idea, turn is exhilarating. Alchemical. CC: You are well known as an art critic and writer. How does your writing affect your art practice and vice versa? SL: I never think of writing as pure ‘writing’. I think I ‘wright’. Work flows from one medium to another, whatever form ‘takes’ best, given the concept. Words are a beautifully fluid medium, like molten mirrors, and ideas turn and return through language and imagery. My art practice is writing – art for me is a way of thinking and working with ideas.

Working with glass is a fascinating process. It is hot, challenging and great fun, especially when you make something new out of something old. We recently started a series of Hot Glass Workshops with Recycled Glass in Singapore – working with glass jars to make unique drinking vessels and flower vases. We are running these workshops on Saturdays - 10:00am till 2:00pm. Contact AGS Education for the schedule of the next workshop program. During the holiday period AGS will be hosting a series of Children’s Workshops, teaching children about how glass is used in society and working with recycled glass materials to make interesting sculptural wall pieces. AGS Education is very involved in the development of new programs that involve an awareness of glass, the environment and art. Our workshops are predominately aimed at beginners and incorporate a balanced portion of art glass information and hands on experience so students can learn about glass, as well as experience the joy of creativity and the transformation of ordinary glass bottles and jars into extraordinary artworks. Original Prints 2012
Cover Story
15 – 18 Nov Affordable Art Fair, F1 Pit Building
After successful Original Prints exhibitions at Singapore’s two previous Affordable Art Fairs, this year artist and printmaker Marisa Keller of the Art and Printmaking Studio has invited eight fellow artists to create a new print series to launch at the November 2012 Affordable Art Fair. While 2010 and 2011 Original Prints were produced in small editions and based exclusively on printmaking techniques, this year the series encompass etching, aquatint, monotype, woodcut, chine collé and embossing, in combination with drawing, painting and other applications. The result is a suite of six unique mixed media works by each of the participating artists. Original Prints 2012 showcases inventive techniques and reflects each artist’s personal concepts and styles. Frances Alleblas and Kelly Reedy use their own recognizable language in figurative mixed media works that expresses the symbolic content of stories and myths. Etchings by Sally Williams and monotype and ink works by Lin Bao Ling let us experience different fleeting moments and moods of day and night. Through her signature abstract line compositions and a calligraphic woodcut form, Esther Ng combines meanings of text and image. Pieces by Izumi Ueda Yuu display images of daily objects connected by a grid, an arrangement that acts to locate each object’s significance and symbolic content in relation to the others. Alison Wilson and Marisa Keller’s works explore the interaction between humans and nature in highly textured, detailed and sometimes threedimensional etchings and mixed media works. Both the Original Prints 2012 collection and the series from 2010 and 2011 will be on display at stand no 2B11 of the Art and Printmaking Studio from 14 – 18 November. During this period the Studio will run live printmaking demonstrations, providing an opportunity for the public to meet the artists and witness firsthand some of the processes used to create the prints. As Original Prints 2012 brings together a collection of works of mid-career, awardwinning artists for the Affordable Art Fair, any piece on offer may serve as a valuable acquisition for seasoned print collectors or as an affordable entry point for art buyers who are new to the market. Sound familiar? The dawn of the 21st century has us dealing with sensory overload from every quarter. Minimalism, with its emphasis on stripping away the unnecessary and focussing on the essential, might be just what we need to take a step back and reflect. Serial Instinct, curated by Tolla Sloane, comprises works from Michael Lee’s new series of paintings, Dwelling, as well as recent works on paper by Richard Caldicott, whose long and storied career has seen decades devoted to the exploration of minimal form. The exhibition's title refers to the shared desire of the artists to work in defined series, as well as the notion of seriality – repetition, in other words – within the broader field of Minimalism.

Art News
Minimalism, as an art movement, is associated with post– WW2 western, particularly American art. Prominent artists associated with this movement include Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Sol Le Witt and Frank Stella. However, it is rooted in the reductive aspects of Modernism and Japanese Zen tradition and culture. Dwelling, consisting of a series of restrained, monochrome floor-plans of structures built, unbuilt, soon-to-be-demolished, or even fictional, seems at first altogether clinical in character, a detached collection of architectural diagrams. The selection of structures, however, suggests the series’ evocative (or provocative) role in distilling urban memory, ranging from Anne Frank’s house, to 3 WTC (also known as the World Trade Centre), as well as Housing Development Board flats of varying vintages. Rather than encouraging nostalgia, the contrast between the plain appearance of the floor-plans and the emotional or imaginative weight of the structures depicted is designed to fire our imaginations, and encourage us to reflect on memory’s capacity for abstraction, and how our urban environment shapes the way we think about the world. Memory, by necessity, abstracts – in particular, through the involuntary removal of extra details – which is suggested by the abstraction of a structure by way of its floor-plan. Richard Caldicott’s drawings, which are far less representational from the outset, owe a great deal to the traditions of minimalism in music and architecture (which speak of the seemingly paradoxical meeting point of stillness and change). Caldicott’s exclusive use of serial production (collectively identified by categorisation, or series title), far from being changeless, is instead a robust engine of difference, generating subtly infinite variety within repeated grid structures. Beyond simply owing a debt to Minimalist architecture, Caldicott's works may be viewed as objects in their own right. They can be experienced alongside the other objects which constitute our experience of the world, as opposed to pictures, which suggest representation, rather than experience. In the century or so since the dawn of mass production, with our lives currently flooded with identical manufactured goods of infinite variety, it is perhaps more pressing than ever to give full consideration to the possibilities of the minimal. Mere weeks after the 99th anniversary of his birth, it may be useful to consider Mark Rothko’s take on the subject of repetition:
“If a thing is worth doing once, it’s worth doing over and over again, exploring it, probing it…”

Singapore Dance Theatre presents
Sleeping Beauty 13 – 16 Dec Esplanade Theatre
In celebration of the magical Christmas season, a time of love, hope and festivities, Singapore Dance Theatre will enchant audiences with Sleeping Beauty, a ballet often considered as the pinnacle of classical repertoire. Staged by artistic director Janek Schergen, featuring choreography by Marius Petipa, Singapore Dance Theatre will bring this beloved fairy-tale to life at the Esplanade Theatre as a grand finale to the 2012 season, with stunning costumes, spectacular sets and principal dancers of incomparable technique. This is the second time SDT is performing Sleeping Beauty, following the company premiere of the piece in 2010. A treat for all ages, audiences will be captivated by this timeless tale about a beautiful princess, a spell of 100 years sleep, a charming prince and a true love’s kiss which awakens the kingdom’s slumber. Sleeping Beauty is set to a rich score by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, with stunning costumes designed by Tracy Grant Lord. Sleeping Beauty was made famous by the legendary production of The Royal Ballet in London. Their production links directly back to the original performance of the ballet in 1890 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, Russia. The original score was created by P. I. Tchaikovsky especially for the first performance of the ballet. It remains one of the most well-known pieces of classical music in the world today. Sleeping Beauty is a perfect blend of music and dance, combined to become a visual spectacle. Janek Schergen comments, “Sleeping Beauty is the turning point for technique for a company, and is often considered as the finest achievement in classical ballet. It is one of the most demanding ballet productions with over 150 roles, involving more classical dancing than any other ballet. To produce Sleeping Beauty is to declare that the company is mature.” Indeed, staging Sleeping Beauty is exhilarating for Singapore Dance Theatre especially with the large cast essential for the production, the massive amount of costumes involved and dramatic set changes which reflect the transposition of time between acts. Tribal Expressions Solo Exhibition of Photographs by Jaina Mishra
28 Nov – 01 Dec The Arts House, 1 Old Parliament Lane
Tribal Expressions is a series of photographs by Jaina Mishra that are palimpsests of expressions of tribal identity and expressions of human emotion. Tribes express their identity through signature elements of lifestyle that wow the world with their differentness. Their textile arts, their body arts and their adornments are testimonies of their differentiated identity. But beneath these differences, all humans are the same, living life through the same range of emotions and life values. Tribal or urban, we all have similar desires and apprehensions and express our emotions in similar ways. This ‘differentness’ and ‘sameness’ has been presented simultaneously in this series through forty portraits and lifescapes of tribes, gypsies, nomads and minority ethnic groups from Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim, Ladakh, Mewar, Kutch, Karnataka and Goa. ‘The art lies in the content of my photographs – in the people themselves and in their creations. My photographs are merely a medium of transmission’ says Jaina about this series created over a period of three years. Also presented as auxilliary installations are antique tribal textiles created by tribals themselves. Jaina’s fascination with tribal cultures began a decade ago through tribal art and blossomed into a full-time engagement with vanishing cultures. She is a collector of antique tribal textiles, writes for textile collector forums and shares her extensive tribal travel experiences on her blog. Three years ago, she taught herself photography in order to do justice to the transmission of the beauty of these tribes to audiences beyond their isolated geography. In this short span, her photographs have earned awards and selections in Singapore, New York and Arles. She also holds an MBA and is a member of MENSA. More information : www.jainamishra.com

The Art of the Brick 17 Nov – 14 Apr ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands
Play becomes art in the latest exhibition to open at ArtScience Museum – The Art of the Brick by artist Nathan Sawaya. Sawaya’s world is limitless in this exhibition where he builds, creates and explores his imagination using the beloved LEGO® brick as the sole art medium. Deemed as one of CNN's 12 “Must-see Exhibitions”, The Art of the Brick treats visitors to stunning displays of intricate sculptures made from LEGO bricks. Hundreds of thousands of pieces of LEGO bricks have been used for the thought-provoking works, along with new sculptures created specifically for the exhibition run. Sawaya encourages the art movement by using a medium that visitors can recognize and relate to. He explains “I use LEGO bricks as my medium because I enjoy seeing people’s reactions to artwork created from something with which they are familiar. Everyone can relate to it since it is a toy that many children have at home. I want to elevate this simple toy to a place it has never been before. ArtScience Museum’s distinctive architectural structure and creative mission are inspirational and it’s the ideal location to display works that are fundamentally re-imaginations of the world.” Sawaya’s most iconic piece to date is the sculpture Yellow – depicting a man tearing his chest apart with LEGO bricks spilling out. This sculpture, like most of Sawaya’s works, is open to interpretation. To him, Yellow is about the idea that “you’re exposing yourself to the world, you’re exposing yourself to all sorts of things.” One of the pieces on display is an approximately 6-meter long dinosaur skeleton. When asked why he chose to build such a sculpture, Sawya replied “This is one of the largest sculptures I

have ever made. It took an entire summer to build and nearly drove me crazy trying to make it work. After seeing so many kids flock to my first solo exhibition, I wanted to give back something and create a sculpture that children would enjoy. What could be better than a dinosaur?” In another first for ArtScience Museum, Sawaya has been commissioned to build an impressive LEGO sculpture of the iconic museum. The ArtScience Museum LEGO sculpture will be unveiled during the opening of The Art of the Brick. Sawaya has exhibited at numerous distinguished galleries and museums worldwide, which include the MASS MoCA in Massachusetts, Time Warner Center in New York, the Art and Culture Center in Hollywood, the Spot Gallery in Paris and Federation Square in Melbourne. Also showing at ArtScience Museum is Outside In: A Magnum Photos Showcase (through 6 January 2013). The Museum is also one of the five venues to feature 178 works from SIPF’s Open Call (through 25 November 2012) Outside In is a rare showcase that brings together 143 works by three lauded photographers – Stuart Franklin, Mark Power and Jacob Aue Sobol – from the prestigious photography agency, Magnum Photos. Stuart Franklin – known for his photograph of a student challenging army tanks in Tiananmen Square in 1989 – documents Europe’s altering landscape and impact of environmental changes in "Footprint: Our Landscape in Flux". Mark Power's "Sound of Two Songs" is an intimate account of a foreigner’s impression of Poland, documenting the poetic side of the country’s fascinating transition and state. In "I, Tokyo", Jacob Aue Sobol captures his mood and experiences in Tokyo, where he felt overwhelming isolation and loneliness amidst the lack of eye contact in the busy streets and I, Tokyo, Jacob Aue Sobol © Jacob Aue Sobol / Magnum Photos silence amongst big crowds.

Singapore International Photography Festival Gaining International Recognition
Till 17 Nov Various locations
A young, home grown, biennial photography festival has drawn the attention of the international photography community. With just two instalments in its short history, the Singapore International Photography Festival (SIPF) has attracted the participation of the photography world’s biggest names in its third instalment which started 5 October. The 3rd SIPF sees the involvement of Magnum Photos, the world’s most prestigious photo agency co-founded by Henri Cartier-Bresson; renowned contemporary Chinese artist Wang Qingsong; and Italian photographer and artistic director of the Rapallo Contemporary Photography Show Andrea Botto. As well as these prominent guests, the Festival’s core exhibition features 414 images by 50 photographers from 25 countries around the world. They were selected from close to 9,000 images submitted in response to SIPF’s Open Call held from Nov 2011 to Apr 2012, and are displayed at the Alliance Francaise, the National Library Building, the Singapore Management University Gallery, The Substation, ArtScience Museum® at Marina Bay Sands and The Photographic Society of Singapore at Selegie Arts Centre. “This is a very exciting moment for the community of photographers in Singapore,” says Ms Gwen Lee, Director of the SIPF. “We are thrilled that so many photographers from around the world responded to our open call and that we have some of the world’s best photographers taking part in this year’s festival. I believe this is a sign that photographers the world over are starting to see SIPF as a key event they must take part in.” As part of the Festival’s objective to nurture emerging photographic talents, the SIPF, in

partnership with Magnum Photos, has launched the inaugural Magnum Mentorship Singapore. This is the first such programme in Asia for Magnum Photos and is supported by Leica Camera Asia Pacific and the National Arts Council. Another first is the showcase of a monumental 42-metre-long work by renowned Chinese contemporary artist and photographer Wang Qingsong, aptly titled The History of Monuments. At the heart of the SIPF is a firm belief that everyone can enjoy photography. “The SIPF is more than just a showcase of photographic art,” says Ms Lee. “We are about nurturing an audience and adding value to society through public education and engagement.” This year, to promote public appreciation of the art, a shipping container has been transformed into a House of Photography (HOP) – a fully operational mobile darkroom and education centre that allows the public to learn about photography and develop actual photographic prints. It is located at the National Library Building during the SIPF and will travel to various Community Clubs, schools and libraries after the Festival. In addition, a comprehensive learning programme and booklet has been created for educators to guide their secondary and tertiary students through various Festival components. M.O.L.C. A solo show by London-based, Malaysian artist Rajinder Singh. The M.O.L.C. series was inspired by the artist's reflections and observations of his home country from the vantage point of one living abroad, and the way in which Malaysia had been depicted in the media by foreign press over the years. With this underlying theme, the artist explored a 'make believe' world, dreaming up a time when 'Malaya' may have been promoted as a land of living curiosities – foreign, exotic, strange and exciting! – a melting pot of rich and bizarre cultures. Till 15 Nov TRAVEL BUG – A solo exhibition by Jake Davies. In this exhibition Jake considers the concept of the "travel bug". While the term typically refers to someone with the inclination to travel often, the artist, a well-experienced traveler himself, considers how important it is to be culturally aware and adaptable to your surroundings when traveling, much like a bug or virus. 17 – 26 Nov
Hold Me Tight – A solo exhibition by Yuree Kensaku, curated by Loredana Pazzini-Paracciani. While informed by social issues, everyday imagery, and childhood memories, the collage works and prints in "Hold Me Tight" retain a surrealistic quality that seems both familiar and obscure at once. 29 Nov – 23 Dec

The Silence Rode A Donkey Into Town. 13 new works by Dale Frank. Arguably one of Australia’s most well known preeminent abstract painters and recognized for his ground-breaking use of striking colour and tinted varnishes, Dale Frank’s paintings are imbued with his unique vision of nature. The luxuriant tightly controlled poured monochromes and multi-colored figurative canvases capture raw beauty and forceful movement across expansive landscapes that takes the viewer on a journey through the artist’s intuitive responses to the glorious plasticity of paint. With an international career spanning over 30 years – painter, draughtsman, sculptor, photographer, film maker and performance artist, Dale Frank moves effortlessly between his passions. 01 – 30 Nov

Serial Instinct features a new series of paintings, Dwelling, by the criticallyacclaimed Michael Lee, as well as recent works on paper by Royal College of Art Research Fellow, Richard Caldicott. Dwelling depicts the floorplans of structures: structures only dreamed of, structures with uncertain futures, and structures destroyed or demolished. In reducing them to pure linework, from a fixed aerial perspective, at a single scale of 1:50, Lee evokes the roles of reduction, bias, and imagination in the process of memory. In a series produced from 2011-12, Caldicott’s work is strikingly restrained, and reflects his long-running interest in Modernist architecture and Minimalist music. As part of an over-arching, decades-long exploration of line, colour, and form, Caldicott presents a sensory experience that is simultaneously austere and seductive. 01 – 30 Nov

The stunning exhibition by the desert masters marks the 40th anniversary of the incorporation of this ground breaking community art centre from Central Australia's Western Desert. This year's show, ‘Tjukurrpa Ngaatjanya Maru Kamu Tjulkura’ (Dreaming in Black and White), brings together the finest collection of works, executed in the unusual black and white style, from some of the company’s most senior law-people as well as some of the most important emerging artists. This exhibition boldly honours the traditions of the company's founding artists and shareholders of the early 1970's but simultaneously embraces today’s modern contemporary art world. Till 01 Dec

Seeing the Kite Again Series II. This exhibition is inspired by the late master Wu Guanzhong’s metaphor of a kite and how it expresses the connection between an artist, his life and the people around him. By bridging Chinese and Western aesthetics, Wu blazed the trail for the modernization of Chinese art. In 2008, the internationally acclaimed artist donated his largest gift of 113 important works to the National Heritage Board. The current exhibition showcases some of Wu’s most outstanding works produced from 1960s to 2000s in the oil and ink medium. Till 12 Nov

Primal Screams by Angie Seah. Angie has been making drawings of “mouth” icons since 1999 but has only begun to question their meaning and significance recently. In this exhibition, she will revisit this creative process in order to understand how she has derived this constant element in her works. This process will extend to other mediums of artmaking, particularly drawing and voice performance. As part of the exhibition, Angie will work with musicians and a sound artist in three performances that will express different perspectives and metaphorical approaches towards her artworks. 03 – 12 Nov
Turn by Susie Lingham. Susie Lingham’s solo exhibition at The Substation, Turn, is a meditation on the mutability of meaning and metaphor, perceptual and conceptual experience. It is a search for the interface of conceptual- perceptual relations, and what lies between the poetic and philosophical continuum of thought – the sliver of a space where we contemplate the nature of the belief systems that we hold on to, and that seem to hold us in place, in an ever-turning world. A series of works will be featured, including drawings, graphic scores and poetry. 16 Nov – 01 Dec
