Sahaja Yoga has been this ‘Guiding light’ for millions of people in 140 countries across the globe since last 39 years, when the founder of this wonderful meditation technique H.H. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, the Master Herself, started awakening the special energy present in human beings, and such desirous people started to get connection with the all pervading power of the Divine love, touching the balanced state within. Once the inner energy called the ‘Kundalini’ is awakened in oneself, such an individual becomes a bundle of joy and love and all shades of hatred, jealousy, greed, lust and anger slowly drop out of the system, giving birth to a loving and joyous human being, probably just what the today’s world longs for. It is hard to believe but a fact that it has become very easy to attain this new state. One just needs to have the desire for the same, and the rest is taken care if one starts the practice of this very easy yet highly effective meditation technique. Kundalini is beyond all religions and is a loving power. We the humans who often experience the sorrow and grief on listening to the ‘Breaking News’ should definitely give it a try, and become a catalyst in the change process!
Editorial Dear Readers, Welcome to Exciting issue of Sahajayoga UAE Meditation In this modern era, as more and more imbalance creeps into us the humans beings and we become like a swinging pendulum touching the two extremes of emotion and aggression, it seems that the roadmap ahead is just unknown. With this context today, we look at Darwin’s theory of evolution which implies that complex creatures evolved with the process of natural selection & with mutations evolved into higher organisms. In this modern era, we believe that human beings are at an epitome of evolution and if that is so, then what are we truly seeking? Is it happiness, peace or truly a connection with our own inner beings to understand ourselves and integrate ourselves with the all pervading energy? Is there something that can bring us joy and alleviate us from the extremes and bring us to balance?? Perhaps something which can drive away all shades of negative elements of lust, greed, anger and jealousy and can that just happen spontaneously in us. In upcoming issues, we will share how science and spirituality have a deep connection. This issue takes us deeper into the science of meditation and shares insights about effect of the meditation, principles and the need for it. Meditation is a unique way that we build connection with our inner personalities to explore our potential energy. Sahaja Yoga meditation is a spontaneous way to achieve a state of “thoughtless awareness” and where our own dormant energy is awakened and we can achieve our true potential of the conscious mind and establish the balance of the “Yin” and “Yang” energy elements in us. The different schools of thought definitely throws light on ancient and modern beliefs but to say that we can get the harmony & balance in all the extremities of violence, poverty, racism, terrorism & other societal problems is probably by only introspecting within and know our inner selves and that’s when we’d say that we have truly arrived in blossom times. Why Should We Meditate? ‘Meditation’ and ‘Yoga’ are the buzz word of these modern times. One wonders why these words are so prominent today. Well, the answers could be in the essence of their meanings. But first we need to know the reason why suddenly these words have become all important.… ….. What happens in the mind of man is always reflected in the disease of his body..... René Dubos Imagine a person overloaded with work, scrambling to meet a deadline or else stuck in traffic. In such situations, the muscles tense, breathing becomes shallow, person starts to sweat, the heart races and blood pressure rises. Most of the times the person may not be able to fight or flee – the two most natural responses to stress - such as in the case of traffic jam. Thus one would remain chronically tense. Unfortunately, it is next to impossible to live in 21st century and not ever be in a stressful situation. Humans across the globe are becoming more and more prone to this silent killer, called as Stress. Going back to as early as the eighties, it was not without reason that Time magazine's June 6, 1983 cover story was called stress "The Epidemic of the Eighties" and it was referred to as one of the leading health problem; there can be little doubt that the situation has progressively worsened since then. Numerous surveys confirm that adults perceive they are under much more stress than a decade or two ago. ¬ A 1996 Prevention magazine survey found that almost 75% participants feel that they have "great stress" one day a
week with one out of three indicating they feel this way more than twice a week. ¬ 43% of all adults suffer adverse health effects due to stress. ¬ In the same 1983 survey itself 55% said they felt under great stress on a weekly basis. ¬ It has been estimated that 75 - 90 percent of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress related problems. ¬ Job Stress is far and away the leading source of stress for adults. ¬ Stress levels have also escalated in children, teenagers, college students and the elderly for other reasons,
including: increased crime, violence and other threats to personal safety; pernicious peer pressures that lead to substance abuse and other unhealthy life style habits; social isolation and loneliness; the erosion of family and religious values and ties; the loss of other strong sources of social support that are powerful stress busters. Now how does it affect us? Well, these statistics tell us that these problems are common and tomorrow anyone of us can be victim of stress, if we aren’t already. As students, we already know the stress of exams or of giving a speech. We have already experienced stress as a teenager. Later we face stress on the job. Stress can have effects on hormones, brain neurotransmitters, additional small chemical messengers elsewhere, prostaglandins, as well as crucial enzyme systems, and metabolic activities that are still unknown. There is a big possibility of stress resulting in some kind of health disease or mental unhappiness, if we don’t learn how to relax ourselves and increase our threshold for stress. Therefore it is really important for all of us to know how to calm down and increase our threshold for stress. The solution is: Meditation! To understand how meditation solves our problem of stress, it is important to know what meditation is. Meditation is defined as discrete and well-defined experience of the state of thoughtless awareness, the state of being in the ‘present’, away from past and future. This is the state when the excessive and stress producing activity of the mind is neutralized without reducing alertness and effectiveness. Normally our mind keeps working and we keep having thoughts from past or the future as shown in this graph. But as we go into meditation, our thoughts slow down and there is a gap between the two thoughts that keeps widening. This is the gap when we don’t think and our mind relaxes. This is when we are in the state of meditation, which can be achieved when the real ‘Yoga’ happens (the Union). This is the state when we are enjoying the most as there are no thoughts. It is like watching little children play when we just enjoy the moment without any thoughts in our mind. Thus Meditation reduces stress! When we meditate certain metabolic and physiological changes occur in our body. For example, according to the study published in International Journal of Neuroscience: meditation can result in reduced blood pressure; decreased thyroid hormones and stress hormones such as cortisol. These metabolic and physiological changes caused by meditation helps in the treatment of many diseases. For example: Bronchial Asthma (Rai, 1993); Epilepsy (Panjwani et al., 1995). “I am, Treading on to a destination “ And the light of knowledge Give me my discretion When I reach my nation The nation which was my unknown dream And truly my true destination” Darwin's Theory of Evolution is a widely held notion which explains that all life is related and has descended from a common ancestor and that complex creatures evolve from more simple ones. Not only that but this happens as random genetic mutations occur within an organism's genetic code and the beneficial mutations are preserved because they by the principle of survival of the fittest and by the principle of "natural selection." These beneficial mutations are passed on to the next generation and the next until they accumulate and the result is an entirely different organism and hence species evolve. In light of the tremendous advances, we've made in molecular biology, biochemistry and genetics over the past fifty years, we now know that there are in fact tens of thousands of irreducibly complex systems on the cellular level. How does a binary fission happen on its own? How does the spindle activity happen in the chromosomal activity when in the cycle of cell division at the right time and the right way? How does the cell know when should that happen? Does anything govern that principle? Look at another example – our own human eye. Darwin confessed, "To suppose that the eye with all its inimitable contrivances for adjusting the focus to different distances, for admitting different amounts of light, and for the correction of spherical and chromatic aberration, could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest degree." A simple human eye but guess what not the best machines in the world can either imitate one or truly replace one. Molecular biologist Michael Denton wrote, "Although the tiniest bacterial cells are incredibly small, weighing less than 10-12 grams, each is in effect a veritable micro-miniaturized factory containing thousands of exquisitely designed pieces of intricate molecular machinery, made up altogether of one hundred thousand million atoms, far more complicated than any machinery built by man and absolutely without parallel in the non-living world." In the modern age with all our advanced science & technology, we are unable to create a single cell in its entirety; we could only end up cloning or culturing a sample of cells. So think about this that human beings who have evolved from amoeba stage and this has been an incredible journey for the living world and it’s probably time to ponder why has all this happened? And where are we now? What are we looking for further? Is there another stage we can, or are supposed to evolve to? If we were at an epitome of our evolution, then why do we still have problems in social, economic, political spheres and medical aspects? And where are we headed….Its give that we need to give ourselves an introspection moment and ask ourselves where are we headed?

THE TRANSFORMATION (By Yagna Pathange) Glitz and glamour, entertainment, fashions and glory are the way of life today. What I am writing about may not be the source of interest for many of the readers not for a different reason than the aforementioned. None the less, there are people, I am sure, who would want a little rest and think about changing for the betterment academically, intellectually, professionally and physically. This article is for those who seek a transformation. Meditation is a practice that has roots grounded to time immemorial. It is present in the scriptures as old as the Vedas and the Upanishads. Yet, in today's world the meaning of meditation or yoga does not ascend more than its physical counterparts and aspects. Meditation is a practice that has roots grounded to time immemorial. It is worth while to talk about a very effective form of meditation known as Sahaja Yoga, founded by H.H Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi. She has awards, prizes and recognitions won in countries known and unknown and in places heard and unheard of. She has traveled all around the world and personally visited many countries teaching the techniques of Sahaja Yoga meditation. When one starts practicing it, it is amazing to see the subtle transformations this meditation brings about in us. There is something in this form of yoga that is eccentric, most important of which is the fact that it starts from the concept of "Self Realization". In order for us to understand what "self realization" means, there is a need to learn or recollect the way our body functions. There are two sympathetic nervous systems; the left, and the right and a parasympathetic nervous system on the centre. The left and right, in Sanskrit (present in the scriptures), are known as Ida Nadi and Pingala Nadi respectively and the central channel is known as Sushumna Nadi. The qualities of these systems stated both in spiritual science and medical science is the same. The left side is more to do with desires, emotions and past -thinking while the right side deals with future -planning, actions and ego. The centre as the word itself suggests is where we are in balance or equilibrium. Within the Sushumna Nadi (the central channel) which includes the spinal cord and brain there are energy centres known as 'Chakras' (spiritual science) or ‘Plexus’ (medical science). These Plexuses are primarily 7 in number, with each of them representing certain qualities. For instance the first energy centre which governs our reproductive organs is known as 'Mooladhara Chakra' and the qualities it represents are innocence, purity and wisdom. Similarly other centres have such qualities associated with them. The last centre, the area of Fontanel bone on the absolute top of the head is called Sahasrara, the limbic area, having a great significance in our spiritual journey. At the base of spinal cord in every human being, rests a special energy Known as "KUNDALINI". (Those who believe in God may consider it as divine energy, and those who do not believe in God may consider it as energy of Mother Nature). The bone in which this energy is present was called the 'sacrum bone' by the Greeks, and it is known as Coccyx bone in Biology. When this Kundalini Energy awakens within us (it is above the first Chakra), it pierces through the rest of the centers and ultimately touches the Fontanel bone area (Sahasrara), and the state is known as "self Realization", knowing oneself. This is the state of deep meditation in which we are able to attain 'thoughtless awareness' where we are completely relaxed and beyond all thoughts, yet we are aware of the surroundings.

The Transformation
As the Kundalini passes piercing through each Chakra, we attain all the aforementioned qualities respectively. We become dynamic, balanced, fearless and what more, transformed to the effect of fulfilling an ‘ideal’ human being's functions. This 'transformation' does not come about in single meditation but definitely the seed is sown during the first time and when we meditate regularly through Sahaja Yoga method, we can attain the ultimate state. Indian culture and civilization have contributed significantly to humanity's heritage. They are as ancient as any, more ancient than many. Indian civilization is remarkable in its uninterrupted continuity since the misty millennia of unrecorded history. Indic visions in an age of science are a vast subject. Indic visions include profound insights and illuminating thoughts, poetic imagination and flights of fancy, breakthroughs in mathematics, and ethical principles that range from the purely pragmatic to the impractically idealistic. They are reflected in art, music, science, philosophy, poetry, grammar, gourmet cuisine, stories. The guru-shishya tradition is a spiritual relationship as per Hindu mythology where teachings are transmitted from a guru (Master) to a 'si?ya' (disciple). Such knowledge, whether it be vedic, agami artistic, architectural, musical or spiritual, is imparted through the developing relationship between the guru and the disciple. It is considered that this relationship, based on the genuineness of the guru, and the respect, commitment, devotion and obedience of the student, is the best way for subtle or advanced knowledge to be conveyed. The student eventually masters the knowledge that the guru embodies. The principle of master hood not only came from India, but is an age old tradition, practiced all over the world, over hundreds of years. Be it the realms of Christianity, Islam, Judaism, or Hinduism, the effect of revolutionary thinkers, philosophers and teachers has been magnanimous. For example, Moses was an extraordinary combination of military leader, social organizer, and religious teacher. He was the most important individual world teacher and leader between the times of Machiventa and Jesus. Muhammad or 'Abdullah (ca. 570 Mecca – June 8, 632 Medina), is the central human figure of the religion of Islam and is regarded by Muslims as the messenger and prophet of God, the last and the greatest law-bearer in a series of prophets of Islam. Jesus of Nazareth (7–2 BC/BCE—26–36 AD/CE),also known as Jesus Christ, is the central figure of Christianity and is revered by most Christian churches as the Son of God and the incarnation of God. Buddhism is based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, commonly known as "the Buddha". He probably lived till around 400 BC. Buddhists recognize him as an awakened teacher who shared his insights to help sentient beings end their suffering by understanding the true nature of phenomena, thereby escaping the cycle of suffering and rebirth (sa? sara). Among the methods various schools of Buddhism apply towards this goal are: ethical conduct and altruistic behavior, devotional practices, ritual and the invocation of holy beings that help them achieve Nirvana, renunciation of worldly matters, meditation, study and the cultivation of wisdom."Buddha" is actually a title, meaning "Enlightened One" or, more literally, "Awakened One".

One of the greatest philosophers of all times is Socrates. He was a Classical Greek philosopher credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy. Through his portrayal in Plato's dialogues, Socrates has become renowned for his contribution to the field of ethics. Guru Nanak Dev is the central figure in Sikhism, and named as the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. His teachings come down today fore mostly in the Guru Granth Sahib, a vast collection of revelatory verses. Guru Nanak Dev Ji spoke from direct understanding as an Awoken personality and not as a scholar. He encouraged people to worship within their own traditions, but to keep the focus on God's names rather than egotistic considerations. Shankaracharya was one of the greatest philosophers and savants of Bharat. Though he lived for only thirty-two years, his achievement was unparalleled. He propounded the vedantic tenet that Brahman the Supreme and man are of one essence and that all people should strive to cultivate this vision of oneness. He established four spiritual centres in the four corners of the country. Ramanuja Acharya (1017–1137), was a theologian, philosopher, and scriptural exegete. He is seen by Hindus as the leading expounder of Visi advaita, one of the classical interpretations of the dominant Vedanta school of Hindu philosophy.Sri Madhvacharya, (1238-1317 A.D.) also known as Vasudeva, Ananda Tirtha and Purnaprajna, is one of India's greatest theologians. He is the founder of dvaita philosophy, and along with Shankaracharya, is one of the most important commentators on the Upanisads, Bhagavad-gita and the Brahma-sutras. His doctrine asserts that this world is real and that there is an eternal and immutable difference between the individual soul and God. After studying in Udupi,( Karnataka, India) Madhva traveled east to Tamil Nadu and northern India where he continued to meet and debate with scholars. His principle contribution has been the establishment of the idol of lord Krishna in the central temple of Udupi. It is said that the lamp beside this image of Krishna was lit by Madhvacarya himself and has never been extinguished. Moving on to culture, the roots of Indian music originate from the Vedic age. Samveda.,the upanishadic period, samgan in Shiksha Granthas., the epic period & in Ramayana and Mahabharata. The Buddhist period has major influence on growth of music. Music was an integral part of Jainism. Mysticism in Islam and the search for truth resulted in Sufism.Bhakti and music joined hands under the teachings of Baba Farid, Amir Khusro, Tansen.,Raskhan, Rahim. Qutuban and Manjhan.. The contribution of Faizi Brothers is noteworthy. In southern India, evolution of Theism was the pivotal point for music. The Alvar saints and Nayanmar saints,growth of Vaishnavism, Shaivaism supported the increments in musical arenas. The Nayanmars, Purandar Das. Kanak Dasa. Tyagaraja Shyama Shastri Muthuswami Dikshitar. Swati Thirunal were important contributors towards the growth of music in the subcontinent. The Bhakti Movement, Ramanand and his disciples,Kabir, Dadu Dayal, Surdas.. Swami Haridas, Meera Bai,. Goswami Tulsidas and Narsimha Mehta had immense influence on developments in northern India . Krishna bhakti in Maharashtra.Pundalik and Vitthal cult.. Mahanubhav Panth. Pandit Damodar.

Jnaneshwar's contribution to music.Tukaram was a prominent Marathi Saint and religious poet in the Hindu tradition in India. He was born and lived most of his life in Dehu, a town close to Pune city in Maharashtra,India. Tukaram was a devotee of Lord Vittala (or Vithoba) --an incarnation of Lord Krishna, who in turn, considered to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu-- in Hinduism.Tukaram is considered as the climactic point of the so-called Bhagawat Hindu tradition, which is thought to have begun in Maharashtra with Namdev. Dnyaneshwar, Namdev, Janabai, Eknath, and Tukaram are revered especially in the warakari sect in Maharashtra. Shirdi Sai Baba was an Indian guru, yogi and fakir who is regarded by his Hindu and Muslim followers as a saint. Some of his Hindu devotees believe that he was an incarnation of Shiva or Dattatreya, and he was regarded as a satguru and an incarnation of Kabir. Sai Baba lived in a mosque, was buried in a Hindu temple, practised Hindu and Muslim rituals, and taught using words and figures that drew from both traditions.The character of his philosophy had numerous elements of bhakti. The three main Hindu spiritual paths - Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga and Karma Yoga - were visible in the teachings of Sai Baba.

Moving towards more contemporary times, we have Rabindranath Tagore, an unparalleled persona of modern India. Tagore was not only a creative genius; he was a great man and friend to many. For instance, he was also a good friend from childhood to the great Indian Physicist, J.C. Bose. He was educated and quite knowledgeable of Western culture, especially Western poetry and Science. This made him a remarkable person, one of the first of our planet to combine East and West, and ancient and modern knowledge. Tagore had a good grasp of modern - post-Newtonian - physics, and was well able to hold his own in a debate with Einstein in 1930 on the newly emerging principles of quantum mechanics and chaos. His meetings and tape recorded conversations with his contemporaries such Albert Einstein and H.G. Wells, stand as cultural landmarks, and show the brilliance of this great man. Although Tagore is a superb representative of India, his life and works go far beyond his country. He is truly a man of the whole Earth, a product of the best of both traditional Indian, and modern Western cultures. The School of Wisdom is proud to have him as part of its heritage. He exemplifies the ideals important to us of Goodness, Meaningful Work, and World Culture. The field of education has had its own share of pioneers. Throughout the centuries, the process of learning has evolved, from being imparted by word of mouth in the vedic age, to just a "click" away in the present times. Chanakya is considered one of the most important names in the Indic stream of studies and discoveries. Various universities such as Nalanda and Hastinapura, were the epicenters of studies, research and learning in the past era. In modern India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan was the person who stressed on the importance of education in the building of a strong nation . Popularly known as "Rajaji," C. Rajagopalachari, the first Indian Governor General of India, was an ardent patriot, a pioneering social reformer, incisive thinker, profound scholar and author. He was also an eminent statesman and able administrator. He personified the ideal of simple living and high thinking.. Dr. Zakir Hussain was another personality thoroughly involved in the same endeavors. These are the people to whom India owes its present developing status, as they laid the foundation on which our country is built. In the present times, personalities such as Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, entrepreneurs such as Narayan Murthy, Azim Premji epitomize the amalgamation of age old principles with modern, rational thinking. Be it scientists and thinkers, new age politicians, manpower, teachers, pupils, or artistes, all have adopted and incorporated the various schools of thoughts tested over time. The present era depicts a state where there is co-existence of modern thoughts based on the teachings of our forefathers. To increase your inner Power and get negative energy out, one should footsoak everyday. Shri Mataji has recommended that anyone serious about progressing in Sahaja Meditation should foot soak every night. Get a bowl and keep it exclusively for foot soaking. A plastic bowl will do. Fill it with enough lukewarm water to cover the ankles and add a handful of salt. Keep a jug of water and a towel beside you. Sit quietly for a few minutes just looking at the photograph of Shri Mataji. Then as you feel better close your eyes and turn your attention inward. Let your thoughts fade away. If thoughts come, do not follow them. Find the place between the thoughts and stay in the present. Keep your attention on the last chakra Sahasrara at the top of your head. If your attention is wandering or if your thoughts do not stop, say in your heart, “Mother Kundalini, I forgive everyone, please make me thoughtless.� Meditate for about 10-15 minutes. Your meditation should be effortless and pleasant. After meditating, rinse your feet with the fresh water in the jug and dry your feet on the towel. Pour the water from the bowl into the toilet and rinse the bowl with fresh water. If you have a hot right channel or have heat or tingles in your right hand (right-sided), you can experiment with using cool, cold or even ice water. If you have a cold or hot left channel or have heat or tingles in the left hand (left-sided), you can use warm or hot water. For the center channel and in-general use lukewarm water.
