From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

“Christ is Risen...He is Truly Risen!” For our Eastern Rite Catholics and the Orthodox this is the greeting they offer to each other during the Easter Season. What a wonderful way to greet other believers...to proclaim the Resurrection of Jesus. These are my favorite days of the Church year. Easter is such a reminder of the New Life that Jesus promises. One of the things I love is that the world around us usually proclaims that New Life. If we look around in our gardens, we can see the crocuses and daffodils springing forth from the earth. The world that looked so dead is now bursting with the signs of spring life. Even in our Church, the images, which were shrouded in purple, have now been revealed in the power of the Resurrection. I hope that these days of celebration don’t pass us by without our reflecting on the meaning of Easter. If we truly believe that the Jesus who died on the Cross was raised on Easter, then we have to ask ourselves, “What does it mean for our lives?” Easter is not a celebration of spring or even of chocolate (as much as I love chocolate). It is the promise of Jesus that, even if we die to this life, we have the promise of Eternal Life to come. But Eternal Life is a free gift that must be freely accepted on our part. In being accepted, it requires a response to God from us. That response is turning away from sin in our own lives and embracing God’s vision for our lives. It is participating at Mass each week to be nourished by the Real and True Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. It is also living in truth the Gospel, sowing the seeds of the love of Jesus, and living each day knowing how much we ARE loved. It is turning to God in Jesus even when and especially when the world seems to prefer the darkness of sin and death. So that through faith and the power of the Resurrection, we can bring the healing and loving Light of Jesus to our hurting world. A world that longs for that promised peace. Never succumb to the powers of darkness; you have been enlightened by Jesus…TRUST. Let us reflect and ponder who Jesus is for us and how His presence is lived each day. Be bearers of His message of peace and hope to all you meet. Come to the Table of the Lord! What a joy it is for me to celebrate Holy Week and Easter with you as your pastor. I feel so blessed by God for all He has done for me. I am grateful to my staff for all they do to sow the seeds of the Gospel at St. Mary’s. I am also grateful and thankful for all those who give so much of themselves and yet, at times, seem to go unnoticed. I am so touched by the gifts that we share as stewards, and I know they makes this parish the wonderful community that it is. May we never take our gifts and blessings for granted and may the joy of Easter remain with us long after the flowers have died and the Alleluias have faded into the background. We are blessed and redeemed by a God who loves us. What joy that understanding should be for us! On behalf of myself, Fr. Dominik, Fr. Collins, the IHM and Dominican Sisters, and the entire staff here at St Mary’s, we wish you and your families a very blessed and prayerful Easter.

CHRIST IS RISEN...HE IS TRULY RISEN! In the Resurrected Jesus and Mary, His Mother, Fr. Bob

Sunday of Divine Mercy April 24, 2022 Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament NEXT SUNDAY after the 12:00 Noon Mass. Three Consecutive Holy Hours: 1:00-2:00pm 2:00-3:00pm 3:00-4:00pm (Join in any one). Closing Benediction at 4:00pm.

Jesus’ Message of Mercy is summarized as ABC: A- Ask for God’s Mercy B- Be merciful to others C- Completely trust in God’s mercy. The Five Elements of the Message are summarized as FINCH: F- Feast of Divine Mercy I- Image of Divine Mercy N- Novena of Divine Mercy C- Chaplet of Divine Mercy H- Hour of Mercy

We wish to feature the Chaplet of Divine Mercy this year. Jesus revealed it to Sr. Faustina as a powerful prayer He wants everyone pray. Sr. Faustina was interceding in her own words about a dire situation – to no avail. Then the Lord gave her the words of the chaplet, and as she began to pray those words the hand of the ‘angel of punishment’ was stayed! The Lord directed her to pray in those words, and to teach others to do the same. “Encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given you…Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death…When they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the Just Judge but as the Merciful Savior…Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy…Through the Chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will” (Diary, 687, 1541, 1731). The Chaplet can be prayed anytime, anywhere. The Lord also asked that it be recited as a novena over the 9 days before the Feast of Mercy (Divine Mercy Sunday). We can pray it for our own personal intentions, for others, for the Lord’s intentions. “By this novena [of chaplets] I will grant every possible grace to souls” (Diary, 796). HAPPY DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY! May the Divine Mercy ever bless you and yours! And may you ever come to Him with the vessel of Trust – and draw!

The Chaplet of Mercy Recite this chaplet on the beads of the Rosary in the following manner: First of all, say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and the I Believe in God. On the Our Father Beads, say the following words: Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. On the Hail Mary Beads, say the following words: For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world. In conclusion, recite these words three times: Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

DIOCESE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE OFFICE OF THE BISHOP

Easter 2022 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Christ is Risen, Alleluia! Every Easter, as we celebrate our Lord’s victory over death, we delight in the consolation that all is restored through the Resurrection, and we ponder God’s relentless invitation to live the divine life given at baptism. This is the good news of our faith: Christ has conquered death and we are invited to life. This good news needs to be heard time and again. Even when things are bleak, we remember Christ is victorious and that we have been invited to witness to his victory. As Pope Francis says: “Where all seems to be dead, signs of the resurrection suddenly spring up. It is an irresistible force. Often it seems that God does not exist: all around us we see persistent injustice, evil, indifference and cruelty. But it is also true that in the midst of darkness something new always springs to life and sooner or later produces fruit. On razed land life breaks through, stubbornly yet invincibly. However dark things are, goodness always re-emerges and spreads. Each day in our world beauty is born anew, it rises transformed through the storms of history. Values always tend to reappear under new guises, and human beings have arisen time after time from situations that seemed doomed. Such is the power of the resurrection, and all who evangelize are instruments of that power.” 1 We know well the bleakness that can overwhelms us. How good it is to recall God’s goodness! The Risen Lord moves through the locked doors of fear to lead us, to lead our families and to lead the world to peace. May we never forget God’s triumph over death and our baptismal call to be an instrument of that power. May we show the Risen Lord to all we meet. This Easter, as we rejoice in Christ’s Resurrection, let us remember especially those who suffer in Ukraine and the millions who have been displaced by that tragic war. Together, we pray that the Risen Christ bring light to their darkness and give them peace. Be assured of my prayers for you in these holy and joyful weeks. Happy Easter! Sincerely in Christ,

Most Reverend John O. Barres Bishop of Rockville Centre

The Schools of Saint Mary Elementary School Rallies for Faculty Member

The students, faculty, and staff of St. Mary’s Elementary School held a ‘pink’ dress-down day on Friday, April 1, 2022, to show their support for Mrs. Janine Mullen, who teaches at the school. She was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery that morning. While attending the 9:00 AM First Friday Mass in the Church of St. Mary, the school community included Mrs. Mullen in their silent prayers, and during the Mass Intentions, her name was announced. Let us all continue to pray for Mrs. Mullen’s strength and perseverance on the road to recovery.

Network, follow your heart, have people in your corner you can learn from, and faith is your antidote for fear. These are some examples of advice that upper-level students of Saint Mary’s High School received during the recent Alumni Career Panel. Hosted annually by the Office of Alumni Relations, selected panelists are invited to return to their Alma mater and share wisdom about their educational journey, career paths, stumbling blocks, and successes. This year, st. mary’s welcomed five alumni from different fields, including business, medical, performance, sports, and education.

efore becoming a marketing guy and ‘serial entrepreneur,’ Bill Donohue ’77, a Boston College and Georgetown University Medical School graduate, worked as a hospital ER corpsman and medical product sales representative. Throughout his career, Bill commercialized quality control solutions used in hospitals and clinics to ensure the accuracy of diagnostic analyzers. His current company, CarePoint Solutions, is launching a first-of-its-kind quality management software designed to reduce preventable medical errors – alarmingly, the #3 killer in the US. Words of advice to students included, “God’s got your back,” and knowing this, “It gives you a superpower.” Mr. Donohue also stressed, “you should not make someone else happy with your career, make you happy with your career.” Bill would like to reconnect with old classmates and network with St. Mary’s alumni that are entrepreneurial or interested in pursuing careers in clinical laboratory medicine/medical diagnostics.

A Manhattan School of Music faculty member and Tonebase.com artist, Daniela Bracchi ’00, has a long list of accomplishments to her credit, including her debut at the age of ten at Weill Recital Hall, which received mention in the New York Times, followed by four solo performances. She traveled locally and internationally for competitions, winning along the journey. Her participation in masterclasses and studying under world-class professionals in the field, along with the opportunity to coach alongside prominent musicians, brought her to levels of career success while obtaining a master’s and doctoral degree. She is a sought-after masterclass teacher and competition adjudicator. Ms. Bracchi feels that networking is about “being present” and is critical to success. She

shared that “Saint Mary’s does a good job of forcing you to know different groups of people. How to get to know everybody and get along with everybody.” She encouraged students to show up at an event, concert, or party. “If they don’t know you, they don’t know about you.” Tyheisha Roach ’09, DDS, LT, DC, USN, pursued her Bachelor of Science in Biology at Adelphi University. She earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery from Columbia University College of Dental Medicine while serving in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant and general dentist for almost five years. While on active duty, Dr. Roach completed a one-year military dental training tour in Norfolk, VA. She then served two years in Okinawa, Japan, and will soon meet her service obligation in Norfolk. Tyheisha will enter Montefiore Medical Center’s Orthodontics Residency Program in the Bronx. During the panel, she shared with the students that “faith is the antidote to fear” and “always be thankful – during your hardships and your successes.” Dr. Roach enjoys spending time with her husband and two children in her free time. She travels any time she can. Post-event, she expressed being “so happy to return to campus after more than a decade and be a member of the panel.” Suppose TJ Hoban ’11 knew that singing in the barbershop quartet in Bye Bye Birdie during his junior year at St. Mary’s would ultimately lead him to pursue acting down the road. In that case, his initial path may have been different. Graduating from Providence College with a Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing, he stepped away from his campus DJ position on WDOM 91.3 to enter a diverse sales and promotions career in the Media Industry. His mantra became God writes a straight path with crooked lines because of the various jobs held until recently. While in between work, TJ had the opportunity to be an extra on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. He loved every second of it, realizing that it was time to pursue his dream in front of the camera. Since then, it has been an exciting journey with multiple roles, including music videos, television, and motion picture films. Mr. Hoban encouraged students to keep moving and that it’s ok to be a work in progress, explaining that “everyone is a work in progress.” When it came to rejections in his career, he believes that “every no is the next opportunity.” He shared helpful daily affirmations, including,

Very Rev. Dom Elias Carr, Can. Reg., president of the Schools of Saint Mary was on hand to welcome our prestigious alumni back to campus for the Career Panel held in the Immaculata Hall Auditorium on March 24, 2022. (L to R: Fr. Elias, Ms. Daniela Bracchi ’00, Dr. Tyheisha Roach ’09, Mr. Bill Donohue ’77, Ms. Mei-Lyn Bautista ’15, and Mr. TJ Hoban ’11).

“Gotta love yourself, gotta love God,” along with the acronym “HOPE - help one person every day” as inspiration for the students in their faith, college, and career journeys. TJ noted how happy he was to return to campus, take part in the panel and see all of the exciting changes in the building, like the new lockers! Mei-Lyn Bautista ’15 was a student-athlete at The George Washington University, playing all four years on the women’s basketball team under a full athletic scholarship. After graduating, she spent time playing professionally for the Philippines’ women’s national team in Taiwan for the Williams Jones Cup. After discontinuing her professional career, she pursued a Master in Professional Studies degree at St. John’s University while serving as a graduate assistant for the women’s basketball team. Upon completing the two-year program, Mei-Lyn started a new career in sports and her current position with Madison Square Garden as the Youth Engagement Coordinator for the New York Knicks. Her role handles all Jr. Knicks programming, providing youth across the tri-state area the equal opportunity to play, love, and grow in the sport of basketball. Ms. Bautista spoke candidly about motivation. She has a 19-year-old brother with special needs who is nonverbal. Mei-Lyn is determined to launch a nonprofit sports organization to serve disabled people one day. She emphasized to the students, “Remember, God has a plan for you. No matter how hard things get, He’s got your back.” Faculty member and event moderator, Mr. Brian Stalter, presented questions to the panelists, who had the opportunity to respond and share experiences they encountered that would benefit the students in the audience. Topics ranged from networking, fear of failing, faith, motivation, and how their time at St. Mary’s prepared them for their future. The program is now in its 12th year at St. Mary’s. It serves as a learning resource for current students while providing a great reconnect for alumni to visit the campus, share their experiences and impart career advice to their future fellow alumni. The feedback from the students and faculty in attendance was nothing short of positive. Many of the students remained after the panel concluded to ask more questions specific to their personal goals. We are grateful to all of our alumni for being a part of this year’s Career Panel, especially those who traveled from out of state to spend the morning with us. The stories shared of your time as a student at St. Mary’s, your faith, college choices, and career paths were well received. We are proud to have you as part of our alumni family and school community. We wish you continued success and God’s blessings. Q

Religious Education As Catholics, we know that the Holy Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith: it is the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Pope Francis has called it the “Sacrament of Love.” Among the traditions in celebrating this most special time is the communion banner. We invited First Communicants to display their beautiful creations along the pew aisles at Masses on Sunday, April 3rd. Each one shares their love and joyful anticipation at starting a whole new time in life with Jesus. What a treasure! All received a special blessing from Fr. Bob and Fr. Dominik. We look forward to continuing to partake in the sacramental journey of our First Communicants and Confirmandi. Blessings, Mrs. Granieri

In Session with Dr. Patricia Pitta Betrayed, But Not Broken Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him. Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.” (Matthew 26:48-50) In the Lenten and Easter Seasons we are reminded of the plight and sacrifice of Jesus. He brought and taught love and acceptance to all throughout his life. Judas betrayed Jesus and had him arrested for a crime he did not commit. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, He paved the road to salvation for all of us. Betrayal never comes from a distant source. It comes from someone we love, a family member, or a friend, or a close associate that we hold dear. Its most outstanding characteristic is the loss of trust for someone you held in high esteem and felt had your back. Throughout my career, many people have come to talk about being betrayed. They ask the question, “Why would that person do what they did?” People who betray put their own ambitions and concerns before the other and do whatever they want to satisfy their desires, perceived needs or wants. In doing so, they disrespect you and betray the moral standard of decency. Today, in our very conflicted world, people are feeling betrayed on many levels. We are all overwhelmed with the war in Ukraine and ponder how innocent people could be dislocated, running for safety, and many killed and to what end. As so many suffer, we suffer with them. Our own sense of security is also rattled. There is conversation about nuclear threat.

That is very frightening. Also politically, we live in such a divided society the likes that America never knew. And then, COVID came and wreaked havoc in our families and neighborhood causing much illness (both physical and mental) as well as the loss of life. Betrayal can be accompanied by trauma. When things happen that are so overwhelming to the mind, body, and soul, we feel disoriented and traumatized. We are in shock and disbelief, “How could this happen?” We can feel confused and have difficulty concentrating. We are left in a state of feeling unsafe with the person or situation that brought about the betrayal resulting in feeling traumatized. The beauty of having a relationship with Jesus, our Lord and God, is that through HIS example, we can realize that we can be reborn in our strength and heal from the betrayals that come our way. Jesus is also our armor that protects us going forward. He will never forsake us. We may feel broken for a while, but we are able to repair our hurts by focusing on the love within us and the love God has for us. When you feel broken, surround yourself with people who lift you up and can support you as your build yourself back up. Prayer is a way of connecting with God and quieting the mind and body. Consider joining a prayer or Bible Study group. Take care of your body. The body can feel out of sorts, so take walks, do something different to get yourself out of the monotony. In the pandemic, monotony was a big issue for many. I would tell people who were more isolated due to concerns for contracting the illness, to take up a new hobby that could occupy their

minds and require some physical output. As you feel more in control and remember that we cannot control others, set new limits and goals regarding what you experienced and what can be resolved and what cannot. You can begin your healing journey by creating a relationship with God and HE is ready when you are. HE is always present. Pray, contemplate, and feel the love of God that will guide you as you venture through your next steps. All answers are within you. You need to quiet your mind so you can find them. A relationship with God enables you to find your path to love that will lead you to make healthy decisions for yourself. You can and will heal! Talking with a priest or psychologist might also help. To not heal is to give your mind and body a jail sentence without a way out to freedom to experience the love you deserve and the love you can give to others. Reach out to God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, through prayer for guidance and direction. Below is a prayer you can say or make up your own. Cut it out and pray it when you need a reminder to make your special connection with God. A Blessed Easter to you and your family from the Mental Health Ministry. Dear Lord: You extend your mercy as I trust in you. I know you have love for me and will guide me to build other relationships based in trust. As I awaken each day, I pray that I begin the day in the true love and follow your WORDS in my relationships in actions and deeds. Amen. Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord | April 17, 2022

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Saint Gregory’s Easter Prayer It is only right, with all the powers of our heart and mind, to praise You Father and Your Only-Begotten Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. Dear Father, by Your wondrous condescension of Loving-Kindness toward us, Your servants, You gave up Your Son. Dear Jesus You paid the debt of Adam for us to the Eternal Father by Your Blood poured forth in Loving-Kindness. You cleared away the darkness of sin by Your magnificent and radiant Resurrection. You broke the bonds of death and rose from the grave as a Conqueror. You reconciled Heaven and earth. Our life had no hope of Eternal Happiness before You redeemed us. Your Resurrection has washed away our sins, restored our innocence and brought us joy. How inestimable is the tenderness of Your Love!

Amen.

Talk to your family about organ donation and transplantation. There are currently 10,000 New Yorkers waiting for a lifesaving transplant. Major religions celebrate this as a final act of kindness. In 2014, Pope Francis said, “Organ donation is a testimony of love for our neighbor.” One organ donor can save up to eight lives and heal up to seventy-five lives through tissue donation. Organ donation is oftern possible even with certain health conditions and advanced age (the oldest donor in New York was 93 years old). For more information, visit LiveOnNY. org/info.

He is Risen! Alleluia! I pray you and your loved ones know the peace of our Risen Lord in these weeks of Easter! Last Easter, Pope Francis reminded us of our call to go to the peripheries to find the Face of Jesus in those we meet and those in need. This Easter season, join me in going to the peripheries and helping those in need in our community by making a gift to the 2022 Catholic Ministries Appeal. This year's CMA theme Ͳ Building a Community of Faith, Hope and Love Ͳ answers our Holy Father's invitation to love and support one another, and your commitment to the Catholic Ministries Appeal helps us build a community of faith, hope and love here on Long Island.

With your help, we serve more than 600,000 people each year: pregnant mothers in our Catholic Charities’ Regina Maternity Services; seminarians in priestly formation who will one day serve God’s people on Long Island; people who come to our food pantries; and our youth and young adults who desire a deeper relationship with our loving God. Please remember that 100% of every dollar raised is restricted to fund the objectives, programs, and mission supported by the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Thank you for prayerfully considering a gift to the 2022 Catholic Ministries Appeal and reaching out to those need. Please pray for the success of this year’s Appeal and for those who are supported by the Appeal. You and your loved ones will be remembered in my prayers and Masses. May you and they know the love of our Risen Lord! Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend John O. Barres Bishop of Rockville Centre
