From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
“Do whatever He tells you.” (John 2:5)
It amazes me that many of our Christian sisters and brothers cannot see in Sacred Scripture the role that Mary, our Blessed Mother, plays in salvation history. St. Luke’s Gospel tells us “that every generation will call her blessed.” Today, at the Wedding Feast of Cana, which begins Jesus’ ministry, there is Mary, right in the midst. She is present with a mother’s heart. She sees that the wine will run out and that it will cause embarrassment and pain for the bridal couple and their families. So Mary brings the problem to her Son, Jesus. Mary gives us those most important words, words that defne her ministry for all generations. She tells the wine steward, “Do whatever He tells you.” Jesus is propelled into His own ministry by the prompting of His Mother. Jesus, as a child of the Mosaic Law, would have, of course, been not only obedient, but also open to His Mother’s wisdom. So here we have Mary, the handmaiden of the Lord, continuing the work the Father gave her at the Annunciation.
Tis story is not only important to the bridal couple at today’s wedding, but to all of us for all eternity. Mary says to us what she said to the steward, “Do whatever He tells you.” Tis is Mary’s role; she shows us Jesus and encourages us to discover Him. As His mother, she would have known Him intimately. Tat intimacy came about through her relationship with Him. A relationship of freely giving herself to Him. Te same must be true for us. Like Mary, our relationship with Jesus deepens when we are willing to give ourselves to Him. To know Him through the reading of the Bible and a prayer life that is centered in Him. Mary’s life of faithfulness is a model for us. She gave her life in service and used her gifts for the glory of God.
In today’s second reading, St. Paul reminds us “that there are many gifts but one Spirit.” A wonderful way for us to grow closer to Jesus is to do what Our Lady did. She discovered her gift, a mother’s heart, and used it as a means of holiness. It is this holiness that drew her closer to Jesus. We all have been gifted, not all the same, surely, but all of importance and needed to make the Body of Christ whole. Te difculty can be two-fold. First, discovering what that gift is and secondly, accepting that it is important. We may think that what God has asked us to do or gifted us with is not very important to the working of the Kingdom. We should never downplay what we have to ofer. If it is our gift and it has been given to us by God, then the Father has a plan for it. Be open to the plan; it will help in accepting the beauty of the gifts given to each of us. We are special and what we have to ofer is important. Mary teaches us that. Learn from her maternal love. She wants to show you her Son.
I continue to encourage you to pray for those who may be away from worship. Let the power of the Holy Spirit touch them. Let all of us take advantage of the Mercy of God that is ofered in the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession).
Catholic Schools Week begins on January 26th and continues through February 1st. I encourage you to consider the wonderful blessing of a Catholic Education. We ofer, not only an academically rigorous program, BUT we are also mandated to teach and preach Jesus Christ.
Please join us for the Open House on Sunday, January 26th, for both of our Schools and see what wonderful things Te Schools of St. Mary have to ofer. It is an investment for the future of your child. Please see this bulletin for further details.
In Jesus, Fr. Bob

Cheerful Catholic Academic New Year Begins with Epiphany Blessings
After a joyous and restful Christmas break, Saint Mary’s Elementary and Middle Schools returned to campus and participated in a meaningful Catholic tradition celebrating Epiphany! The New Year began with a faith-filled story of the three wise men completing their journey to visit the infant Jesus. The Kindergarten students watched a video called “Wise Men from the East”, a beautifully animated retelling of the journey of the three wise men, as part of their Epiphany lesson. This was followed by a craft project depicting the wise men presenting their gifts to baby Jesus! Third-grade students learned about the special star that led the three kings to the infant. Afterward, they created their very own stars and decorated them with various items that also guide them in their lives.
The students also witnessed the Blessing of the Doors for Epiphany, a solemn and significant event where the Epiphanytide pattern of 20+C+M+B+25 is affixed to the entryway by chalk or other means representing the calendar year 2025 and the crosses to Christ. The letters C, M, and B stand for the traditional names of the Magi – Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. Fr. Rafal, with his presence and guidance, visited each building and conducted the blessings and sprinkled Holy water in each of the main doors. We are truly grateful to Father for his role in making this special day a beautiful way to enter January with hope and faith for the year ahead.
THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY
Religious Education
Sacramental preparation and Catholic formation are necessary for young people celebrating the Sacrament of Confrmation. In Confrmation, we receive the gifts and seal of the Holy Spirit, and are empowered to spread and defend the faith as witnesses of Christ. Tis year, we are blessed to welcome Bishop Robert Coyle, who will administer the sacrament on April 2, 2025 at St. Mary’s. We are also grateful to our pastor Fr. Bob and parish priests. Tey continue to guide our large student community along the sacramental path.
Volunteer Service Hour Project (Grade 8)
Working together with parish social ministry, the religious education ofce is leading a weekend drive on January (25th – 27th) to collect gently-used blankets, sheets, and towels for donation to the North Shore Animal League. Confrmandi (Grade 8) may place these needed items in size-appropriate plastic bags located in the south vestibule of the Church. Please remember that ALL noise in the south vestibule reverberates throughout the Church. Reverence must be maintained while donating items. Participating students may use the time to donate and coordinate these giving eforts as part of their Confrmation service hour assignment.
“It is evident from its celebration that the efect of the sacrament of Confrmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost.”
- Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1302
May God send his Spirit to bless all St. Mary’s Confrmandi, deepen their faith in the Gospel, and make each an instrument of his love.
Blessings, Mrs. Granieri
Society of St. Vincent de Paul
In the Gospel today, at the wedding feast in Cana, Jesus reveals himself to his disciples and they began to believe in him. Everyday, God also gives us signs of his love and so we also can respond in faith and trust. Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul becomes a sign of God’s love to those who are sufering and you give them reason to believe and to trust.
Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Tank you for your continued support.

St. Mary’s Families Bring Christmas Joy to Tose in Need
Parishioners Matt Karcic and Joel Fleck did it again! Tey organized an extremely successful event to help feed Manhasset’s food insecure population and many of the families served throughout the year by Good Samaritan House. Teir group raised enough money to provide full Christmas meals to close to forty families. Tey also restocked our pantry shelves with our most popular items and they provided gift cards to be used by our families throughout the year. Te most special thing about this event though is the fact that they gather so many from our community to help in the efort. Entire families shopped for and delivered food, teenagers bagged groceries, and more!
Below is a quote from someone who attended the event for the frst time and captured the spirit perfectly:
“What was truly evident at the event as the volunteers assembled was that there was a sense of joy, love, friendship, and brotherhood. Every volunteer that entered had a big smile on their face. It was a true community event and the joy and meaning of Christmas was clearly alive and well in Manhasset.”
Tank you Matt and Joel for your continued support of our low income familes and for providing them relieve over this most special holy holiday!

Daughters of Mary Epiphany Music Day
Te happiness of the Christmas season continued when our littlest parishioners were treated to a delightful musical celebration of Epiphany Sunday. Hosted by the Daughters of Mary, the teenage members of St. Mary’s Rosary Society, the event combined a joyous retelling of the Nativity Story with ten songs featuring the same elements of faith and music education as a Making Music Praying Twice class.
St. Mary’s High School Juniors Caroline Bardi, Emma Alameda and Saoirse McNamara led the narration, music direction, and prayer activities while Daughters from St. Mary’s Elementary School, Kellenberg, Sacred Heart and Marymount High Schools kept the energy high by modeling lively participation in song and dance.
Epiphany Cake and Star Cookies topped of the festivities - a fun and faith flled activity for the children, their parents, and the girls.
Second Collection Next Weekend for Te Church in Need
Te monies collected at this time will be shared among three areas of the world where there is particular need for help. Tank you for your generosity.
Church in Central and Eastern Europe - this collection supports the Church in more than 25 countries that struggle to recover from former communist rule. It also aids communities throughout the region that are afected by the war in Ukraine. Funds support pastoral care, catechesis, renovations, and seminary formation.
Te Church in Latin America - For many in Latin America and the Caribbean, a rising secular culture, difcult rural terrain, and a shortage of ministers all present obstacles to practicing the faith. Your support for the collection provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, and other programs.
Te Church in Africa – Te Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa supports pastoral projects to build the capacity of the Church and foster lasting peace and reconciliation across a continent often marked by division and tension.
