From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
“He has sent Me to bring glad tidings” (Luke 4:18)
In our First Reading from the prophet Nehemiah, the Israelites have returned to their homeland after years of exile. Tey begin to rebuild and re-establish themselves as a people. Before they continue in the physical rebuilding of their land, they know they need to re-establish the covenant they made with God. So all the people are gathered and Ezra reads the Word of God. But why, when Ezra read from the Law, were the people sad? Perhaps, on hearing the Word, they realized their past failures and sins; sins that brought them into exile in the frst place. Or, maybe previously they hadn’t understood the Word and now they can hear its life-giving qualities and it moves them to tears. Would that we had their hunger to hear God’s Word and, when we did, that it would move us to tears of repentance and gratitude for what we hear God continually ofers us.
What’s challenging about our First Reading from Nehemiah is how solemnly Ezra proclaims God’s Word and the devotion with which the people receive it. “Ten they bowed down and prostrated themselves before the Lord, their faces to the ground.” While that isn’t how we physically respond to hearing the Word proclaimed at our liturgy; still, it does challenge us to attentiveness and devotion to the Word we hear. After the readings are proclaimed, have we ever contemplated our response, “Tanks Be to God?” Are we thankful for the Word that nourishes us? Yes, at times, it may be a difcult challenge, but embracing the Word can change our lives. It is God’s plan for happiness in our lives.
In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus’ frst public words are a synthesis of His ministry. He picks the reading from Isaiah that will defne who He is. It is a life that, for three years, proclaimed hope to those who seem to be robbed of joy. To those imprisoned by their sins and their past, He will ofer freedom. He comes that we may have a new life in Him. As the people in Ezra’s time come with repentance and then joy to hear and LIVE God’s Word, Jesus comes as the embodiment of that joy. Jesus ends His words with “Today this scripture is fulflled in your hearing.” Jesus IS that hope to all who hear. We are the inheritors of the ministry of Jesus. We are not only inheritors, but called to share that message with all we meet.
We are invited and challenged to fnd in the Word the hope, freedom, and joy that God ofers to us. But for us to allow the Word to reside in us we frst have to READ the Word.
Tis Sunday is the Open House for our Catholic Schools. I encourage you to consider a Catholic Education for your child. Not only are our Elementary, Middle School, and High School places of academic excellence, but also, as mandated in today’s Gospel, we preach and teach our Catholic Faith that professes the Lordship of Jesus. Please come and see what we have to ofer; it is an investment in the faith-life of your child.
In these days of cold weather, I ask that you be conscious of the church doors. We certainly want to be aware of those entering or exiting the church after us and hold the door. If there is no one behind you, please make sure the door is closed. Tis will ensure the heat is retained in the church, keeping it comfortable for the next Mass, as well as helping to keep heating costs down. Tank you for your cooperation in this matter.
In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Bob

You Can Be Kind and Right at the Same Time
Lessons for a Relationship: People Can Communicate Respectfully
We have begun a New Year and have almost completed the frst month. Many people have made resolutions and statistics have it by the 10th of the month New Year’s Resolutions are put aside. Now, as you walk through the stores, there are reminders for Valentine’s Day. February is known as the month of love. We all want to feel loved, but when we feel hurt by the ones we love, our feelings of love turn into sadness.
One of the biggest difculties for most couples is they become emotionally charged or out of control when their partner does something they consider wrong. Some yell and scream while others distance themselves and give the other the cold shoulder. Neither way of communicating is appropriate and helpful for creating a connected, loving bond.
Most couples have trouble communicating when emotions run high. Te problem is that when you hear something that isn’t correct about you, or annoying, or hurtful, your anger and anxiety spikes and you are no longer thinking with your rational head. You are responding with your emotions. So how can you change that pattern?
I call it “God and You in Relationship.” When you feel your emotions running high, “Take a deep breath with God” and say to yourself
in an audible voice or quiet voice, “Jesus, help me calm my reactions.” Ten ask your partner to repeat what they just said and listen with a calmer head and heart. It is good for you to discuss with your partner that you are working on calming your emotions and you will be practicing bringing God into your relationship. See if he or she would like to join you.
So, after your partner talks, I want you to repeat in your own words what you heard him/her say. So, for example: Your partner says, “You never put away your dishes and you are such a mess!” You repeat in your words, “You say that I never put away my dishes and I am such a mess. I agree that sometimes I don’t put my dishes away and I do not appreciate that you call me a mess and are judgmental.” Ten say a repair statement: “I am doing too many things at the same time, and I need to work on this.” What you are doing with this type of responding is you are owning your behavior and correcting his/her judgment of you and making a statement about repairing and changing your behavior for your own good and the relationship. You are being kind to yourself and your partner by owning your behavior and you are taking steps to improve your actions so not to cause yourself or the other grief. You are not responding with out-ofcontrol behavior and instead, setting an example for the relationship that is mature and kind.
Tese steps are simple and hard at the same time. Here are the steps spelled out:
1. Partner says something that sets of your emotions
2. You ask Jesus to help you calm your emotions and take a deep breath
3. You repeat what your partner said.
4. You respond to what he/she said and own your behavior and identify what is incorrect or inappropriate in what he/she said
5. Ten you say a repair statement to change your behavior if appropriate.
If you both follow this pattern of communicating, your relationship will become more open, honest, and loving and the tension in the relationship will decrease. Below is a prayer you can both say daily to help each of you get in touch with the love of God within you and that you have for each other. Maybe say it before dinner or before bedtime.
My dear Jesus, I am grateful for how you help me to calm my emotions and my perspectives. I know that I need to take responsibility for my behaviors and that I need not judge or be judged by another. If I ofend, I must admit my actions and change my ways with your guidance and help. Amen.
You can also go on my website: drpatriciapitta.com and listen to the relaxation exercise on the frst page to help you calm your emotions, in addition to inviting Jesus into your relationship to help you calm your emotions.

Prayer to Jesus in the Holy Eucharist
My Lord Jesus Christ, Your Eucharistic presence teaches me how to love as you have loved me. Prayer of Adoration
I adore you Jesus, true God, and true man, present in the holy Eucharist, kneeling before you and united in spirit with all the faithful on earth and all the saints in heaven. In gratitude for so great a blessing, I love you with all my heart, for you are worthy of all praise and adoration. Lord Jesus Christ, may I never ofend you with my lack of love. Going Forth
Lord Jesus Christ, I have spent this time of adoration and prayer in your Eucharistic presence. Fill my life with love, joy, peace, and kindness. Transform me by the power of the Holy Spirit into a living image of your compassionate presence. May I go forth from this hour of adoration and prayer to be your hands, feet, and heart to all those I meet. Risen Jesus, may I be surrounded by the radiance of your love. Amen.

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?
We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith.
Our lives, time, eforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism.
We come from diferent places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.
