Parish Mission Statement We,
A Reflection by Father Charles
Two proposals are laid before the youth: HUMILITY, mentioned at least twice in the text, and then PRIDE.
“God of might, giver of every good gift, put into our hearts the love of your Name, so that by deepening our sense of reverence, you may nurture in us what is good and, by watchful care, keep safe what you have nurtured.”
The first one is that Pride is like a disease that has no cure. The idea is perhaps that it becomes worse over time. The advice to the young man is perhaps that of avoiding it altogether. The second one is like that of an evil plant that has sunk deep roots in the ground. One might cut the shoot, but its roots remain deep. The idea here is perhaps the fact that pride might begin slowly, but eventually becomes uncontrollable and even the desire to remedy it might altogether be too Thlate.e recommendation of the author comes at the end of the text. He says the young man needs to do two things. The first one is to be reflective. To make the right choice demands attention and discernment or, if you like, wisdom, the same virtue that Solomon asked for, to be able to distinguish the good from the bad. The second thing that the young man needs is wise counsel, an attentive ear. No one can resolve all of life’s problems by himself. Therefore an attentive ear will consider the advice given to him by the sages and will enable him to choose correctly. “The mind of a sage appreciates proverbs or parables and an attentive ear is the wise man’s dream or joy” (Sirach 3:31 or 3:28).
It sets the right tone for our reflection on today’s First Reading from the Book of Sirach, also known as Ecclesiasticus, Chapter 3:19-21, 30-31 or Chapter 3:17-19, 27-28). The two slightly different paassages are shown because the versification differs from version to version of the Bible. They depict a father giving instruction to his son. The Book itself belongs to the Wisdom corpus, the great sponsor of which is the quintessential Wiseman, Solomon. The passage we have here in the Third Chapter is cast in the usual genre of Wisdom texts, depicting a father giving instruction to his son, an inexperienced youth.

God Bless, Fr. Charles
Humble Yourself and You Will Find Favor with God
The Opening Prayer (Collect), for the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C, reads:
The young man, following the usual wisdom pattern, is to make a choice between the two. However, the text gives indications of what the good choice would be. The first advantage of the choice of HUMILITY is FAVOR with THE LORD. Favor translates the Hebrew concept of the kind of favor that THE LORD gives, like the one that Joseph had, to have been raised from prison to second in command in Egypt, or that of David, to have been chosen over Saul to be king. That favor, according to the text, will come from two places; first it will come from men; and secondly, it will come from God. The opposite choice is PRIDE. The author uses two metaphors to describe it.
The collection for Sunday, August 21, 2022 amounted to $19,326.00

I love You, O infinitely lovable God, and I prefer to die loving You rather than to live for a single moment without loving You. I love You, O my God, and I long for heaven only to know the bliss of loving You perfectly. I love You, O my God, and I only fear going to hell because there I will never experience the sweet consolation of loving You.
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
I love You, O my God and my only desire is to love You until my last breath.
O my God, if my tongue is not able to say at every opportunity that I love You, at least I want my heart to repeat it to You as many times as I take a breath. My God, give me the grace of suffering out of love for You, of loving You while I suffer; give me the grace of one day breathing my last breath out of love for You and at the same time feeling how much I love You. The closer I come to my final end, the more I beseech You to intensify and perfect my love for You. Amen. Prayer of Love to Our God by St. John Vianney

Dear Families,
To join our growing school, please contact the Religious Education Office at 516-627-4028 ext. 1127.
It is always heartwarming to hear a person share the memory of someone who has made an impact on their life. Frequently, they will talk about a teacher who taught them something that made an impact on how they see the world. In sharing Christ’s Gospel to our young Catholics – this can be you!
Mrs. Granieri
If you know someone who may be interested in becoming Catholic, needs to be baptized, to complete their Sacraments of Initiation (Confirmation and Holy Eucharist), or would like to deepen their knowledge and understanding of our Faith, advise them to call Sister Teresa, Director of Adult Faith Formation. Today, we hear Jesus say to us, “…when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” With love for your neighbors who are poor, crippled, lame or blind, look around your house to see what furniture, household items, and clothing you no longer use…and give it to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
