On August 5th the Catholic Church celebrated the dedication of a basilica in Rome, known as St. Mary Major (Santa Maria Maggiore). It is also known as the Feast of Our Lady of the Snows

Why Our Lady of the Snows?

St. Mary Major was originally dedicated after the Church had confirmed Our Lady’s title as “Mother of God,” in the 400’s A.D. It is the largest church building in the world named in Mary’s honor. Several Popes are buried there, as is St. Jerome. The “snow” comes from a legend of a wealthy couple who prayed to Mary, asking for a sign as to how they could best put forth a donation to the Church. In a dream, Mary appeared to the husband, asking for a church to be built in her honor. Mary promised to identify the location for the new church by sending a snowfall there. This couple approached the Pope (Liberius) with the news, who coincidentally had a very similar dream. And on August 5th, 352 A.D., tradition holds that snow fell in Rome, on the spot where the basilica is now located. Although the feast now celebrates the anniversary of the dedication of the basilica, each year on August 5th, white rose petals are dropped from the high point of the church’s dome during Mass.

St. Mary Major is one of the seven pilgrimage Catholic churches of Rome. Mary, Mother of God, Pray for Us!
