A Reflection by Father Charles BE READY! In the Church’s liturgical calendar, any time we hear the phrase, “Be Ready,” it means a lot. Either the liturgical year is coming to an end, or we have entered into Advent, or Christmas, which will eventually lead to the end of the calendar year. Some of us start shaking because we made resolutions and we were unable to meet the requirements. The idea of getting ready for the master’s coming is imperative. Jesus’ teaching on how to be ready for the coming judgment is again highlighted in today’s Gospel passage. We are to learn from the greedy, rich man who became self-centered and arrogated all to himself as if he were an island as recorded in last Sunday’s Gospel Reading. Today, we continue with the same Twelfth Chapter of Luke’s Gospel. The passage is Luke 12:32-48. It is interesting to note how riches, wealth, treasure and possessions and their usage are connected with the Kingdom of God in this chapter. The reading begins with what we should describe as the absolute abandon of all wealth, “Sell your possessions and give alms” (Luke 12:33a). But we see that as it progresses, the discussion changes to a position closer to reality. We need to deal with wealth, but we must deal with it the right way. There is what we call a radical way, and then a not so radical one. Now, the heart of the issue is found in v. 42, where Jesus speaks of the STEWARD. The Greek word is OIKONOMOS; i.e., a household manager or bursar or treasurer. Interestingly, the word OIKONOMOS is used a few times in the New Testament. One of them is found in Romans 16:23, which speaks of Erastus, who was OIKONOMOS of the city. Of particular interest is that the term is actually used not just of a domestic bursar of sorts. In reality, the Gospel presents four types of SERVANTS. The first is referred to as a WISE and FAITHFUL Servant. Again, the term used is OIKONOMOS. The Old Testament provides us with a model of the Wise OIKONOMOS in the person of Joseph: So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, no one can be as wise and discerning as you are. You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people shall dart at your command. Only in respect to the throne shall I outrank you.” (Genesis 41:39-40) Now this description was given to Joseph while in Egypt and so he is the model of the Israelite WISEMAN. Who then is a wiseman in Israel? He is the one who is able to live in a foreign land, but not allow himself to be contaminated by foreign wisdom. He is the one who, even though in a foreign land, is directed by divine wisdom, by God talking to him in dreams. So this is the point St. Luke is making, since most of his readers would have been either SERVANTS like Onesimus or HOUSEHOLDERS like Cornelius or Philemon or Lydia. To tell them to sell their belongings like Barnabas would be totally impracticable. They had to learn to live like Joseph, wise and discreet in the foreign world of money, and yet like servants of God. And so a Christian in Luke’s day does not need to radically follow the injunction to sell everything. He must resort to wisdom. And that is to learn how to live in the real world and yet with his eyes set on the world to come. This is the “Joseph principle.” However, the problem is that not every servant is as wise as Joseph. The second category of servant is what we could call the UNFAITHFUL or UNRELIABLE Servant. The servant described in vv. 45-46 actually starts off well. The problem begins when he thinks that his master has been delayed. The apparent lack of accountability corrupts the servant and changes his attitude.
Church of Saint Mary | 4
A Reflection by Father Charles The third category of servant is the DISOBEDIENT SERVANT (v. 47). He is the servant who right from the getgo has no intention to do as he is told. He has a mind of his own. The problem is that this is the servant who would not just want to abuse his master’s wealth. He would want to be the master himself. The fourth category of servant is what we will call the IGNORANT SERVANT (v.48). Recall that the IDEAL SERVANT is WISE and KNOWLEDGEABLE. How on earth did this servant not know what his master wanted? Did he forget, or he was disinterested? What is clear is that in all FOUR CASES, there will be a time of RECKONING. Sooner or later, every servant will have to account for what he has been entrusted with. Faithfulness will be rewarded; whereas unfaithfulness will be chastised. Being ready is a call to us Christians to prepare to give account of our stewardship at all times. We must therefore live our lives consistently in obedient and moral uprightness beyond reproach. God bless, Fr. Charles
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Eucharistic Adoration Prayers Holy God, I pray that day by day we continue with one mind in the church, and break bread from house to house. Let the Eucharist be an occasion that unites us as we reflect on the sacrifice that You made for us. Let us come together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising You for all that You have done for us. We thank You for loving us so much that You gave Your only Son for us, Amen. (Acts 2:46-47)
Awesome God, the cup of blessing that we bless at the Lord’s Supper is a sharing in the blood of Christ. The bread that we break is a sharing of the body of Christ. Since there is one bread, we believers who are many, are united into one body, for we all partake of the one bread which represents the body of Christ. We thank You for Your body and we thank You for Your blood that unites us, Amen. (1 Corinthians 10:16-17) Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays
3:00 - 5:00 PM
Eternal God, I bless Your Name because You are awesome, and You are holy. I do not take the breaking of bread and the drinking of wine lightly because this is a choice that I have made to serve and accept You. I cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. I cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. I pray that we reflect in our hearts before we partake because we do not want to provoke You to jealousy, Amen.(1 Corinthians 10:21-22)
