Dear Parishioners,
“Make your hearts firm, because the coming of the Lord is at hand.” (James 5:8)
Well, here it is, the Third Sunday of Advent, which is traditionally called “Gaudete” or Joyful Sunday. We are more than half way done with Advent and Christmas looms around the corner. Today, the Scriptures still tell us to prepare…but now we see who we are preparing for, Jesus. In the midst of the purple of Advent, we are presented with the One St. John the Baptizer has the people waiting for. So to the purple we add the joyful color of white and hence the pink candle. St. John is in prison and hoping that Jesus will come and release him. The Baptizer himself has to reevaluate his own understanding of Jesus. Jesus reminds him that he is not the Messiah who the people might be expecting or waiting for. His was not a Kingdom of political power or authority, but rather one where the heart rules. Jesus encourages St. John the Baptist to have faith and hold onto the reality of what Jesus came to do. This gives St. John hope and he centers himself on the message. Jesus reminds John to look around…the deaf hear, the mute speak, and the dead are raised. It is the message of Isaiah the prophet that we see continued in our first reading, his vision of hope for the world that centers the Baptist’s mind and heart.
Of all the seasons of the Church Year, Advent has always been the most difficult for me to enter into, as I am sure it is with many of you. It is a constant struggle not to start celebrating Christmas right after Thanksgiving. I try to wait and then I get nervous that I haven’t purchased all the gifts I need for people. So with heart pounding, I run to the mall! Sometimes I wonder why the Church even has this almost forgotten season. But then I see a sign like the one the Knights of Columbus put out, “Keep Christ in Christmas.” Then I remember…oh yeah, it’s not about the mall or the gifts (as important and as nice as they are), it’s about Jesus and my relationship with Him. So I feel my heart steady itself and I start again from scratch spending a little more time before the Tabernacle and the Blessed Sacrament; a little extra reading and meditating on the Sacred Scriptures; maybe an extra visit to my confessor to go to Reconciliation. Maybe you too hear the words of Scripture today, “Prepare the way for the Lord.” Maybe that means for you, some quiet time in prayer, listening to the voice of God; going to Mass during the week; taking advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession), whatever it may be. The most important thing is not to let the time pass without trying to “Keep Christ in Christmas.” The more emphasis we put on Jesus, the more joyful Christmas can be. Give it a try; you won’t be disappointed.
Last week, our Confirmation Candidates went on a retreat at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington led by the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal. The theme was the call of Jesus and they highlighted the life of St. Teresa of Calcutta. The retreat ended with Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. It was a very prayerful time and I am so grateful for the joyful and spiritual presence of the Sisters. I am grateful to our Director of Religious Education, Mrs. Marie Granieri, Fr. Dominik, and the adult volunteers who helped make the day one of prayer and reflection. Please pray for our Confirmation Candidates as they journey to this great Sacrament.
I do encourage you to go to Confession to prepare for the Birth Day of the Savior.
In Jesus, our long-expected Savior, Fr. Bob

“Blessed Virgin Mary, the people of the Americas are filled with joy, for your motherly love revealed at Tepeyac. You are the great sign that appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and her head crowned with twelve stars. Assist us with your prayers that we may love each other as sisters and brothers of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.” --Marian Prayers & Devotions, Liguori Press
Christmas Dinner 2022
Once again, our Rosarians celebrated the season with a festive evening at the North Hills Country Club. Our event included a Christmas Shopping Boutique, fabulous raffle baskets, and over a dozen even more spectacular prizes. Members donated each and every item included in the prizes, which allow the Rosary Society to continue to support charitable causes throughout the parish, especially scholarships to the Schools of St. Mary’s.
Thank you for your generosity in sharing your talent and creativity, your time in volunteering to help in all the aspects of the Dinner, and for supplying so many wonderful gifts. Thanks, too, to those who could not attend, but contributed a donation to the Rosarians.
The Board of St. Mary’s Rosary Society wishes each member, every parishioner, and all your families, a joyful and blessed Christmas! - Marijo Lantier, President

The Schools of Saint Mary National Honor Society Induction Ceremony
Saint Mary’s High School administrators, faculty, candidates and family members gathered in the Church of Saint Mary on November 30, 2022, in reverence to witness the National Honor Society Induction Ceremony. Under the direction of Mr. Joseph DeMerit, who serves as moderator for the Society, the new slate of officers took their formal Oath of Office. They each lit a candle representing the four pillars of the National Honor Society (NHS). Twenty candidates came forth to take their pledge during the Rite of Commissioning. The congregation responded in recognition of the charisms. They encouraged the candidates to be responsible stewards of their gifts and, most of all, to live the Gospel by serving others in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Mr. Michael Tesoriero, an alumnus from the Class of 2011, who earned his MBA from Georgetown University, delivered the keynote address. His curriculum vitae and successful accomplishments are inspirational, and more so, his desire to support his Alma mater, which he credits for giving him the foundation to pursue his business, entrepreneurial, philanthropic, and spiritual interests. Mr. Tesoriero proudly continues to grow in his Catholic faith. He encouraged the newly inducted NHS members to make good use of the educational opportunity. “You were lucky enough to attend St. Mary’s because your family or someone else had to sacrifice something for you to be here; it’s not free. What you do with this opportunity is your gift back to them.”
Thank you, Mr. Tesoriero for sharing your time, wisdom, and talents with St. Mary’s. Congratulations to the newly inducted candidates and officers. We are proud of your academic commitment, character, and spiritual formation demonstrated to bring you to this celebrated point of your educational journey.

Share Christmas
This is the 26th year that St. Mary’s Parish Social Ministry will be supporting local families who struggle to provide a traditional Christmas for their family members. Our support for these families, of course, includes providing food for them. But we also like to provide gifts for them and their children. Many of these families rarely have the disposable income to purchase special gifts for themselves or those they love. They are truly struggling every month just to make ends meet, some months they have more success than others.
We are offering a couple of ways for our parishioners to help these families have a less stressful holiday if they choose to.

Our office really appreciates donations in the form of gift cards. This allows us to shop for individuals around the holidays, tailoring their gifts to best meet their needs. Any leftover gift cards are used throughout the year to support these families with needed items. An example of when we would use a leftover gift card is around September for a single mom to buy shoes for her children before school. Suggestions for gift cards that would make wonderful gifts include: Amazon Macy’s Target
If you prefer to shop for gifts yourself, please fill out the form below, and we will send you a “Wish List” created by a specific family or a person in need. You may also email kkosciusko@stmary.ws to get on the “Share Christmas Shopper” list.
Gifts and gift cards can be dropped off to our office Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. They can also be dropped at the Parish Office during normal business hours. Please label any donations with your name and “Share Christmas.” Please deliver all gifts by Thursday, December 15th.
As always, your generosity and the spirit in which you give to those in need are so appreciated. We sincerely hope you and your family experience the beauty of God’s grace this holiday season. We hope you have much joy and peace and many beautiful moments.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us that the good news can be seen, touched felt and heard through the lives of God’s people. We are now charged to take up the ministry of Jesus’s, but we can’t just ask people to take our word for it; our actions must speak for us. Since Christmas is a time of love and gift giving, please share in Jesus ministry by giving a gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that those who are poor can know the good news of Jesus.
Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@ stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-7468250. Thank you for your continued support.

Parish Social Ministry
Bereavement Ministry
The Parish Social Ministry office at St. Mary’s Manhasset will be offering two weekly support groups for the bereaved and those struggling with unresolved loss starting the week of January 23rd, 2023. Both sessions will run for ten consecutive weeks. The primary goals of the groups are to help the participants learn about the grief process, to develop skills to manage their grief, and to help them adjust to living in a world without the deceased. The groups are open to anyone who has lost a spouse, partner, parent, or sibling. One group will be offered on Wednesdays from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM and a second group will be offered on Saturdays from 9:30 to 11:00 AM.
Wednesday’s session will be facilitated by Tara Barenello and Bernadette Casalino. Saturday’s session will be facilitated by Marie Granieri, Dr. Robert Windorf, and Jordon Rini. All facilitators were trained by Dr. Lou Sabatini who is a bereavement counselor with over thirty years of experience. Tara also has an MS in counseling and an Advanced Certificate in Mental Health, Marie Granieri has a Masters in Sacred Theology, and Dr. Robert Windorf is a long time educator and has worked with the Passionists to facilitate retreats for young adults.
In an effort to meet the needs of all of those suffering with grief from loss, we are offering two different types of bereavement counseling. The Saturday session will be rich with Catholic faith-based tools, using Scripture and prayer to help in the healing process. Marie Granieri will draw from her in-depth knowledge of the suffering of Christ and the ability to find peace and grace through lamentation to help those in need. The Wednesday sessions will be more secular.
There is a one-time registration fee of $10.00 to cover the costs of the course. To register for a group, please send a check made out to St. Mary’s PSM and the requested information below to St. Mary’s PSM Office, 1300 Northern Blvd., Manhasset, NY 11030 by January 5th. For more information on the sessions, please call Kathleen Kosciusko at 917-8642802 (cell) or 516-365-2705 (office). You can also email her at kkosciusko@stmary.ws.
Parish Social Ministry Partners with Christ Church to Serve Those in Need
Our Parish Social Ministry office has enjoyed partnering with Christ Church Manhasset to serve those in need. Jesus said, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.”
The Confirmation Retreat at the Seminary of Immaculate Conception provided Grade 8 Confirmandi with time away from the familiar routines to participate in the highest form of prayer. We remember that Christ brings salvation to the world not only by his exterior activity of teaching, but also by the silence of his hidden life of prayer. Eucharistic Adoration in the chapel brought students the blessed opportunity to be with Christ and experience his real presence. Led by the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal, students also participated in interactive discussions about Christ’s call to sainthood and the choice to center their life on the “Highest Good.” Stories were shared about Saint Mother Teresa, blessed Carlo Acutis and Sr. Clare Crockett. All were reminded that it is in the ordinary life of everyday people loving God above all where we see the fruit of his divine work. Even in the administration of the sacraments, it is by water and oil that we are made pure, healed and transformed in Christ.
St. Mary’s Parish has made this Confirmation retreat possible for many years. It often comes with the challenges of weather, traffic hitches and the need to keep up with all that school demands. Yet, we continue to fill the Seminary with St. Mary students. O’ Lord my God, how great thou art!
Thank you to the Franciscan Sisters and Sr. Lucy Fidelis for their love and great devotion to our students. We are grateful to Fr. Bob and Fr. Dominik for all they do each year to make the retreat so spiritually filled in Christ. Chaperones Mrs. Buckley, Mrs. Fran Hurley, Mr. Anton Bartul and Mrs. Ginny Young contributed so much to our retreat experience. The wonderful support of St. Mary principals Kristen Schreiner and Mr. Buckley began our day - with a smile!
And thank you to all Grade 8 parents who supported our preparation process start to finish. We appreciate entrusting your children to partake in the retreat as part of their sacramental preparation.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Sundays at the
9:00 AM
Mass
What Is It? After the Opening Prayer, children gather and are dismissed from the church with a blessing by the priest, proceed to the chapel for the Sunday Readings and a short reflection on the Gospel, all on a level that children can understand. They are returned to the church at the beginning of the Creed.
How Can You Help? We are in need of a few more people who would like to help the children understand the Gospel reading for the day. Please consider sitting in on Sunday to see what it’s about and/or email Jane at bulletin@stmary.ws.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
A Prayer for Advent
My hidden Lord Jesus, I love You and thank You with profound gratitude for uniting Yourself with fallen humanity. When You first entered into this world, You remained hidden for nine months in the immaculate womb of Your Blessed Mother. She carried You, body and blood, soul and divinity, within the sanctuary of her body. She also carried You within her heart as a result of her perfect love for You and her perfect obedience to the will of the Father.
Precious Lord, as I embrace this Advent Season, please open my eyes to see the great value and blessing of Your Incarnation. Help me to discover Your hidden presence in this world and within my own soul. I desire to see, understand and experience the profound effects that Your Incarnation has on my life and I desire to receive those effects more fully this Advent. May I become a sanctuary in which You dwell so that I, like Your dear Mother, may bring Your presence into the world.
My loving Jesus, I choose You, this Advent, as my King and my God. I abandon myself to You and seek to put all my trust in Your tender care. Draw me close to You and free me from my sin so that I may love You with a pure and holy heart.
Mother Mary, as You carried your dear Son in your immaculate womb, you also carried Him in your heart. Pray for me, this Advent, that I may surrender myself to the will of the Father in imitation of you. You said “Yes” to all that God asked of you and never hesitated to fully embrace His divine will. Pray that I may imitate your perfect example so as to share a deeper union with you and your divine Son.
Come, Lord Jesus, Come, Lord Jesus, Come, Lord Jesus! Amen.
