From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners, “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight His paths.” (Matthew 3:3)
These words of St. John the Baptist define the weeks of Advent. As we prepare for Christmas and the celebration of the birth of our Savior, Jesus, this season calls us to take stock of our lives. Are we ready, not only for the celebration of Jesus’ birth, BUT ALSO, more importantly, for His coming in glory? Last week, we heard that Jesus would come like a thief in the night. A thief comes when we least expect it and the hope is that our homes will be prepared and secured to protect us from being robbed. The Second Coming of Jesus arrives the same way. The difference is that we should not lock our Savior out, but rather make sure that our hearts and lives are ready so that we may receive the gift of eternal life.
Today, our Gospel gives us the words of St. John the Baptist: prepare the way of the Lord. The context of that preparation can be seen in the next line: make straight His paths. We all know how much easier and efficient it is to drive on a straight highway than it is driving on a curving back road. The back road usually makes the trip longer and can be filled with elements that can cause problems in our drive. St. John is relating this to our own lives and the paths we have chosen. The Word/Bible/Scriptures and the teachings of the Church give us a direction and path we need to daily embrace…the way of the Lord. Internalizing these through prayer and meditation can keep the path to the Lord straight and clear. In Advent, we are challenged to look inside our hearts and remove the roadblocks and curves that make the way of the Lord to our hearts more difficult.
St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans gives us some great areas to ponder. Are we willing to help others? Are we tolerant and patient? Do we treat all people in a friendly and welcoming manner? St. Paul tells us that our actions toward each other have the power to give glory to God...and the reverse is also true. Our actions can push us further away from the Kingdom of God. So this season is the looking glass that helps us focus on and change those areas that make us unworthy of the Kingdom of God.
Isaiah presents a picture of the Day of the Lord. No one and no thing shall fear another. All will live in peace and harmony. The wolf and the lamb will lie down together and a child will play in a viper’s den. This may seem to be just poetic imagery, but, in reality, it can become a blueprint for the way we are called to interact with others. Isaiah goes on to speak of the day of justice and mercy. We are always called to be the instruments of this Kingdom and to leave no room for the path of the Lord to get lost on the “curves” of our own lives. So, as our Advent days continue to move forward, look at your life. Is the road and path that Jesus has to your heart one that is straight or do the “sinful” moments make it filled with curves and detours?
As part of our desire to fulfill the expectations of the Second Vatican Council’s vision for the Divine Liturgy, the faithful are encouraged to know the Latin responses to the Mass. A few years ago, we introduced the custom of singing the “Holy, Holy” (Sanctus) and the “Lamb of God” (Agnus Dei) in Latin during the Advent Season. Please use the laminated cards in the pews to follow along.
In light of that same directive, you will have noticed that the cantor or lector sings or says an introductory prayer at the beginning of the Mass. This is known as the “Introit” or Entrance Antiphon. These words set the tone and message for that particular Mass. The same is done for the Communion Antiphon. These verses can be found in the missalette for the Mass of the day. You are welcomed and encouraged to join your voice to these prayers.
In Jesus, our long-expected Savior, Fr. Bob

Thursday, December 8th - Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Immaculate Conception is the title given to Mary that celebrates her conception free from original sin. Pope Pius IX proclaimed the Immaculate Conception a dogma of the Church on December 8th, 1854. “The Most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of Almighty God, and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved from all stain of original sin.” He cited Genesis 3:15 where God told the serpent, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, between your seed and her seed.” In Luke 1:28, theologians believed that the angel Gabriel’s greeting, “Hail, full of grace,” meant that Mary was fully favored with an abundance of grace. God’s grace kept her free from sin throughout her life. God chose her from the beginning to be the mother of Jesus and thus, made her worthy and without sin. - Illustrated Book of Mary
“Blessed Virgin Mary, may we imitate your life of humble faith and service. Amen.”

Parish Social Ministry
Share Christmas
This is the 26th year that St. Mary’s Parish Social Ministry will be supporting local families who struggle to provide a traditional Christmas for their family members. Our support for these families, of course, includes providing food for them. But we also like to provide gifts for them and their children. Many of these families rarely have the disposable income to purchase special gifts for themselves or those they love. They are truly struggling every month just to make ends meet, some months they have more success than others.
We are offering a couple of ways for our parishioners to help these families have a less stressful holiday if they choose to.
Marshalls/TJ Maxx Raindew

Our office really appreciates donations in the form of gift cards. This allows us to shop for individuals around the holidays, tailoring their gifts to best meet their needs. Any leftover gift cards are used throughout the year to support these families with needed items. An example of when we would use a leftover gift card is around September for a single mom to buy shoes for her children before school. Suggestions for gift cards that would make wonderful gifts include: Amazon Macy’s Target
If you prefer to shop for gifts yourself, please fill out the form below, and we will send you a “Wish List” created by a specific family or a person in need. You may also email kkosciusko@stmary.ws to get on the “Share Christmas Shopper” list.
Gifts and gift cards can be dropped off to our office Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. They can also be dropped at the Parish Office during normal business hours. Please label any donations with your name and “Share Christmas.” Please deliver all gifts by Thursday, December 15th.
As always, your generosity and the spirit in which you give to those in need are so appreciated. We sincerely hope you and your family experience the beauty of God’s grace this holiday season. We hope you have much joy and peace and many beautiful moments.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
In today’s Gospel, John the Baptist urges us to “Prepare the way of the Lord.” This is what Advent is all about, for we are called to help prepare the way of the Lord by making the real meaning of Christmas come alive in our own hearts, in our family and to reach out to those in need.
Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. Bereavement Ministry
The Parish Social Ministry office at St. Mary’s Manhasset will be offering two weekly support groups for the bereaved and those struggling with unresolved loss starting the week of January 23rd, 2023. Both sessions will run for ten consecutive weeks. The primary goals of the groups are to help the participants learn about the grief process, to develop skills to manage their grief, and to help them adjust to living in a world without the deceased. The groups are open to anyone who has lost a spouse, partner, parent, or sibling. One group will be offered on Wednesdays from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM and a second group will be offered on Saturdays from 9:30 to 11:00 AM.
Wednesday’s session will be facilitated by Tara Barenello and Bernadette Casalino. Saturday’s session will be facilitated by Marie Granieri, Dr. Robert Windorf, and Jordon Rini. All facilitators were trained by Dr. Lou Sabatini who is a bereavement counselor with over thirty years of experience. Tara also has an MS in counseling and an Advanced Certificate in Mental Health, Marie Granieri has a Masters in Sacred Theology, and Dr. Robert Windorf is a long time educator and has worked with the Passionists to facilitate retreats for young adults.
In an effort to meet the needs of all of those suffering with grief from loss, we are offering two different types of bereavement counseling. The Saturday session will be rich with Catholic faith-based tools, using Scripture and prayer to help in the healing process. Marie Granieri will draw from her in-depth knowledge of the suffering of Christ and the ability to find peace and grace through lamentation to help those in need. The Wednesday sessions will be more secular.
There is a one-time registration fee of $10.00 to cover the costs of the course. To register for a group, please send a check made out to St. Mary’s PSM and the requested information below to St. Mary’s PSM Office, 1300 Northern Blvd., Manhasset, NY 11030 by January 5th. For more information on the sessions, please call Kathleen Kosciusko at 917-8642802 (cell) or 516-365-2705 (office). You can also email her at kkosciusko@stmary.ws.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
A PRAYER BY ALPHONSUS LIGUORI BEFORE THE BLESSED SACRAMENT
This prayer before the Blessed Sacrament by St. Alphonsus Liguori, the celebrated 18th century theologian and founder of the Redemptorists order, is a moving and fitting way to begin a visit of adoration and meditation with our Lord there.
My LORD Jesus Christ, Who because of Your love for men remain night and day in the Blessed Sacrament, full of pity and of love, awaiting, calling and welcoming all who come to visit You, I believe that You are present here on the altar. I adore You, and I thank You for all the graces You have bestowed on me, especially for having given me Yourself in this Sacrament, for having given me Your most holy Mother Mary to plead for me, and for having called me to visit You in this church.
I now salute Your most loving Heart, and that for three ends: first, in thanksgiving for this great gift; secondly, to make amends to You for all the outrages committed against You in this Sacrament by Your enemies; thirdly, I intend by this visit to adore You in all the places on earth in which You are present in the Blessed Sacrament and in which You are least honored and most abandoned.
My Jesus, I love You with my whole heart. I am very sorry for having so many times offended Your infinite goodness. With the help of Your grace, I purpose never to offend You again. And now, unworthy though I am, I consecrate myself to You without reserve. I renounce and give entirely to You my will, my affection, my desires and all that I possess. For the future, dispose of me and all I have as You please.
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays
3:00 - 5:00 PM
All I ask of You is Your holy love, final perseverance and that I may carry out Your will perfectly. I recommend to You the souls in Purgatory, especially those who had the greatest devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and to the Blessed Virgin Mary. I also recommend to You all poor sinners.
Finally, my dear Savior, I unite all my desires with the desires of Your most loving Heart; and I offer them, thus united, to the Eternal Father, and beseech Him, in Your name and for love of You, to accept and grant them.

Religious Education
Students are learning about the meaning of Advent. The beautiful time in the Church liturgical calendar to spiritually prepare for the coming of Christ.
God’s people contemplate the Light who is his Son breaking into a darkened world. St. John tells us “He was in the world and the world came into being through Him; yet the world did not know Him” (Jn 1:10).
There has never been a time when Christ was not in the world. As He is one and the same with God the Father, Christ has been drawing humanity to Himself since before the dawn of creation.
And by the Holy Spirit, the sent Son of God takes on the flesh of humanity to carry out the divine mission willed by the Father. The saving mission to reconcile the sins of the world as Redeemer.
It is to the young Virgin Mary that Christ comes first. With perfect obedience, she accepts God’s will not only to be the Mother of Christ, but our Mother too.
May we light our Advent candles wherever we are, Mrs. Granieri

A few study books are available for those who do not have one from our previous look at Revelation. All are welcome.
Children’s
Liturgy of the Word
Sundays at the 9:00 AM Mass
What Is It? After the Opening Prayer, children gather and are dismissed from the church with a blessing by the priest, proceed to the chapel for the Sunday Readings and a short reflection on the Gospel, all on a level that children can understand. They are returned to the church at the beginning of the Creed.
How Can You Help? We are in need of a few more people who would like to help the children understand the Gospel reading for the day. Please consider sitting in on Sunday to see what it’s about and/or email Jane at bulletin@stmary.ws.
