From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

“Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord.” (Psalm 40:5a) Jesus is beginning His first discipleship lesson for the Apostles, the great number of Disciples and the great Multitude. This is the Apostles’ first Disciple Hour lesson. Here in Luke, Jesus begins explaining to His Apostles and to us the radical difference between Kingdom Life and secular life. His point is that if we’re going to be God’s children, we must be properly instructed as to what God desires from each one of us. Our value system used to be that of the secular world around us, but now it has to change. To be a part of God’s Kingdom means that His subjects live differently than they would in the secular world around them. We must have a God-centered worldview. God’s priorities are different than those of the world system around us. God has different purposes than the world has. If we are saved, then God has placed us into His Kingdom and we must begin living by His standards, not by the ones from our former kingdom. Jesus knows this. He also knows that living for God’s glory and by His standards doesn’t happen automatically or come naturally. We all must be taught what God desires from His people and then begin the hard work of conforming and submitting our lives to His sovereign rule. In this first lesson, Jesus is going to pronounce a blessing on those people who are poor, hungry, weeping, and hated. Immediately, we see that there is something radical here. According to the world’s standards, those are the very people who are not blessed. Our culture would say that the rich, full, happy and liked are the folks who have been blessed. Jesus says something else. To make sure we understand that He’s not mistaken, He says the same thing in a negative way. What He does is declare woes, which are the opposite of blessings, on the ones who are rich, full, happy, and liked. They usually have found their strength and trust not in the Lord, but in the things of the world. These things usually fade, corrode or waste away. Jesus is calling us to hold on to what endures and brings a true, deep, and abiding joy. As Jesus continues in Luke’s version of the Beatitudes, we see that all we may have been taught by our culture to hold as true and good is now thrown upside down. This “confusion” should be the impetus for us to re-evaluate our priorities in life. What is it that we hold on to? Where are our energies expended? Scripture reminds us that where our treasure is, there will our heart be. We all know in truth what the answer is. St. Paul tells us so beautifully today in his letter to the people of Corinth when he reminds us that “we have hoped in Christ.” Ultimately, the question is…Will you be happy with the world’s riches or will you hold out for a greater treasure; namely, Jesus Christ? If we choose Jesus, it is not just true happiness in this world that we are promised, but, even more importantly, eternal happiness in heaven. The choice, of course, is ours. Which do you choose? How then do you live out that choice? The psalmist today gives us a hint. “Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.” Can’t get more clearer than that, can it? In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Bob

Stewards of God’s Gifts In the Gospel reading for today, Jesus has encouraging words for those who are struggling in this life. He also has a warning for those who think they have enough without God. Living Stewardship (Pillar of Prayer): Today’s readings warn against living a life far from God. This week reach out to your Father in prayer. Bring to Him your worries, questions and prayers—and listen to Him in silence.

Religious Education This week, I invited Catechists to reflect on this beautiful painting. The anonymous painter depicts the Virgin Mary engrossed in a book. She is surrounded by Saints. To her right, Saint Dorothy is plucking a cherry, Saint Barbara is drawing water from a well, and Saint Cecilia holds a psaltery, on which the Child Jesus is plucking the strings. At the feet of Saint George, there is a small defeated dragon (have to look for it!), and at those of Archangel Michael, a small black demon is chained to a tree. Saint Oswald is leaning against a tree trunk. The little “garden of paradise” is a magnificent representation of God’s presence. Catechists were invited to share and ponder the image with students. Confirmandi will find the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit present - each one a blooming blue iris. First Communicants can see how a “table” is always present where God dwells. As the Lenten season draws near, we devoted time this week to prepare them for the sacrament of First Reconciliation. February is also the month when Confirmandi will be submitting their preparatory assignments for Confirmation. Please be sure to visit the Religious Education page on the parish website to review due dates and other important reminders. We look forward to receiving the information and are here to assist with any questions. As students “set out” to reach audacious goals, we continually remind them of the need to also “look out” to see how God is at work in the world, and in their own lives. Blessings, Mrs. Granieri

RCIA and Adult Faith Formation RCIA Candidates Continue Their Study of the Sacraments The RCIA candidates continue their study of the Sacraments. They will review and discuss the Sacraments of Initiation before moving on to the Sacraments of Healing. They continue to study the readings of each Sunday Mass before they attend the 10:30 AM Mass on Sunday. They have begun to experience Centering Prayer and will soon be introduced to Lectio Divina. Do keep them in your prayers. Sister Teresa can be contacted about our RCIA and other Adult Faith Formation programs at 516-627-0385, ext. 1010. Her office hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10:00AM and 4:00PM and other times by appointment.

Our Parish Has a New Website We are transitioning to a new parish website: saintmarysmanhasset.org. Please visit and bookmark the page for easy reference. Our livestream links and daily readings are available on the site.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament The Prayer of Dialogue St. Teresa of Avila describes prayer as that of a close sharing between friends. Our conversations with the Lord are often motivated by a desire to give thanks, to praise, to ask for something for ourselves or others, or to seek forgiveness. These are all forms of prayer, all seeking, as King David asked, “...a clean heart create for me, God...open my lips; my mouth will proclaim your praise...” (Psalm 51:12, 17) The following steps offer one way to begin a conversation with the Lord:

Enjoy the silence: Focus during this time before the Blessed Sacrament on the prayer of silence. Save conversations for outside the church after you have finished praying. Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Church

Settle into a comfortable position: Quiet your mind. Distraction is the biggest obstacle to prayer; take a minute to clear your mind. Ask God to help you let go of distracting thoughts. Give thanks to God for the blessings he has given you: life, health, work, family and friends.

Call on the Lord for help: Doubt and pride can also hinder your friendship with God. Remember some of the marvelous things Jesus did when He lived among us and trust that He desires to give you joy, goodness and peace; there is nothing that He cannot do when you let Him enter into your life. Ask Jesus to help you open yourself to change.

Ask our Lord’s forgiveness for the times you have not been aware of his presence and for your sins. If you have been away from the sacrament of Reconciliation for a long time or have grave sins, take courage and take advantage of the sacrament at one of the times listed in this bulletin. Trust Him.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul In the Gospel today, Jesus gives us the blessings of serving the poor, hungry and weeping people, for you will then rejoice and leap for joy. But Jesus also teaches us the decisiveness of choice: blessing or woe. Choosing to help those who are suffering will fill your heart with the blessing of Jesus and indeed your reward will be great in heaven. If you or someone you know needs assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385 ext. 1125 or SVDP@stmary.ws. If you would like to make a donation, you may use the collection slots at the doors of the church or place an envelope in the regular collection marked “St. Vincent de Paul Society.” For furniture and household donations, please call 516-746-8250 to arrange for a pick up.
