From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

“The Lord, your God, shall you worship.” (Matthew 4:10)

On Ash Wednesday, St. Paul reminded us of the very important and awesome responsibility that each of us have been given at Baptism. As ambassadors, we represent Jesus to the world. I am wondering if that ministry has been one we reflect upon. Our dealings with all people should always be balanced by the fact that those we come in contact with should see something different in us. As part of the Body of Christ, we bring Jesus to the world. How often sin and selfishness keep us from being true ambassadors. We see the effects of sin and selfishness in our first reading from the Book of Genesis.

Adam and Eve are tempted by the devil. The devil goes right to the nerve that he knows will bring weakness to Adam and Eve. It works; the temptation causes them to sin. It is the way they fall prey to the temptation that reveals their own weakness. They were not content with all that God had given them. They sought more. While it is not a sin to seek to better ourselves by deepening the grace and blessings in our lives, there is a reminder that we are the created and God Himself is the Creator. God sets His law for a reason. While, at times, we might not understand that law, we are still commanded to obey. It is when we make ourselves greater than God that we get into trouble. Our responsibility as God’s children is to give Him our total love and obedience.

This is seen very clearly in the Gospel of St. Matthew. The devil tempts Jesus in the desert. Jesus is tired, hungry, and maybe feeling a little lonely. The devil sees his chance and offers Jesus the wonders of the world...and food for His hunger. Jesus rebukes the Evil One and reminds him that is God alone we worship and serve. Jesus was conscious that He was in a weakened state and uses the Scriptures to strengthen His resolve to serve God. The Word was His defense.

The Word is a great tool to keep us one with Jesus. Temptations are all around us and the Evil One wants us to turn from God to our own way, our own will. Pope Francis has often called the devil the great deceiver and liar. He makes us believe that our sins are justified and hence we depart from the path of God and walk in the loneliness of our desires. Strength and knowledge of God’s path is revealed and strengthened when we pray and reflect upon the Sacred Word of God. St. Paul tells us that through obedience to Jesus we have been made righteous. That righteousness is free gift to each of us. How wonderful our God is. On Ash Wednesday, the prophet Joel so beautifully reminded us “that the Lord took pity on us and was stirred to compassion for His people.” Lent is a great time for us to reflect on how much we are loved by God and turn again to Him. I encourage you to read the Scriptures, attend daily Mass if you can, and most certainly take advantage of the wonderful Sacrament of God’s forgiveness in Confession. These forty days call us to repentance, to leave behind our temptations so that we may celebrate with wondrous joy the Feast of Easter.

Praying the Stations of the Cross is a traditional Lenten practice that goes back centuries. After the Emperor Constantine made Christianity the formal religion of the Roman Empire in 313 AD, pilgrimages to the Holy Land began. The Franciscans, with the permission of Pope Innocent XI in 1686, were allowed to erect the Stations in their churches, for those who were unable to travel to the Holy Land. In 1731 Pope Clement XII decreed that they be erected in all churches. In this prayer form, the faithful walk the “stations” of the last day of Jesus. We will pray the Stations of the Cross at 7:00 PM each Friday in Lent

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament takes place every Monday at 3:00 PM. Exposition ends with Benediction at 5:00 PM. And, of course, as was mentioned, confessions are heard every Saturday at 4:00 PM. The Rosary is prayed after all daily Masses. I encourage you to take advantage of these prayer moments to make Lent that true time of conversion and drawing closer to the Lord.

Let us journey these forty days together. In Jesus, Our Crucified Lord, Fr. Bob The First Sunday of Lent | February 26, 2023

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

THE NEXT

SVDP MEETING IS WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1ST, at 7:00 PM in the Saint John Paul II Room. New members are always welcome!

We invite you to explore the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Church. There are no special qualifications to join, other than the desire to join with others in helping Neighbors in need. As a group, we meet monthly. Come decide for yourself if God is calling you to this special Ministry.

Lent is a call to “give alms for the poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families within walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are, in effect, ringing your doorbell.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

Ministry of Consolation

Have You Considered Becoming a Minister of Consolation?

St. Paul teaches that when one person in the community suffers, so do we all. Thus, at the time of the death of a loved one, we minister to the grieving through the Consolation Ministry and by witnessing to the love of God. Our trained teams help the family to plan a beautiful Mass of Christian Burial including the choices of Scripture Readings, Music, and assisting family members who would like to be involved in the Mass.

All are invited to consider being a part of this moving ministry either as a Greeter, Altar Server, Family Coordinator, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, or Lector. Call the Parish Office at 516-627-0385 or Valery Rodi, Ministry Coordinator, at 516-627-0910 for more details.

As serious needs arise, and with food prices at all time highs, we find our food pantry has become a vital resource for so many people. We distribute food to over 150 people per month. Your continued donations of food to the pantry allows many families to have food especially for their children.

No family should go hungry, and we make sure, with your help, that does not happen. Thank you for keeping our pantry the vital food bank it has become. We are in need of the following items:

Second Collection This Weekend to Aid Those Suffering the Effects of the Earthquakes in Turkey and Syria

Bishop Barres has authorized a voluntary special collection to assist those suffering the effects of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

Last weekend, the St. Mary’s CYO 5th Grade Girls’ Basketball Team clinched the league championship by beating St. Martin’s of Bethpage in the finals at Kellenberg High School. One of fifty-four teams, they finished the year undefeated. The team represented St. Mary’s very well. They had excellent sportsmanship in all games. The coaches made sure everyone on the team got playing time. And there was a prayer said before each game. (Submitted by a proud parent)

We pray for those who have died and for those who are suffering and for those who are assisting in the recovery and rebuilding process. Please be generous.

If you would like to donate online, please visit the diocesan website, www.drvc.org, scroll to “Earthquake Aid for Turkey and Syria Fund” and click on “Join the Relief Efforts.”

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

The Eucharist in Holy Scripture

Where do we gain our understanding of the Eucharist? First and foremost, we learn about Jesus’s Body and Blood…from Jesus.

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” (Matthew 26:17-30)

In John 6:53-57, Jesus further tells us that “For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.”

In the Lukan account of the road to Emmaus, the two men traveling recognize Jesus only when he breaks bread at the table. “Their eyes were opened,” Luke tells us. (Luke 24:31)

Because No Marriage is Beyond Hope

Church of Saint Mary | 14

As we Journey Together in Communion, Participation and Mission this Lenten season, through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, we have a wonderful opportunity to grow together in faith.

Our prayers are joined with our community of faith who are the living Body of Christ. Fasting is spiritual and physical purification; the pangs of hunger remind us of our hunger for God. Through our support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal, we join with our brothers and sisters all across Long Island to hear the Lenten call to almsgiving. One of the central lessons of the cross is compassion; the heavy burdens we carry help us to appreciate the suffering in others. For this letter that I am writing you, I want to focus on almsgiving and the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA).

Your support of the CMA ensures that the ministries will have the funds they need to spread God’s love to all those they serve. Ministries that include Faith formation of our seminarians, deacons and lay leaders; Faith formation for our young adult and youth ministry and our children in religious education classes; Respect Life initiatives; Catholic Charities affordable housing for seniors and people with disabilities, substance abuse programs, food programs and parish social ministry support. All these ministries and more are so vital to the over 600,000 individuals they serve. It is thanks to people like you, that they can support so many in need. Even throughout the pandemic, donors still came together to ensure that these ministries remained alive and vibrant.

I ask you to please join me and all Catholics within our diocese to prayerfully consider making a gift to the CMA. Please do so to the best of your ability-- every gift matters, regardless of the size. Please remember that 100% of every dollar raised is restricted to fund the objectives, programs, and mission supported by the Catholic Ministries Appeal.

Finally, let me remind you, that if you are unable to make a gift as this time due to circumstances in your life—please reach out to the parish at any time, so that we may help you in any way that we can. You are never alone.

May God bless you, your loved ones and our parish as we begin our Lenten journey.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo

Diocesan Priest, Oblate of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart

Montforte Irpino: 11 January 1899 - Rome: 2 May 1934

O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith. Amen.
