A Farewell Message from Father Jude In May 2015, Msgr. Peter Pflomm, on behalf of Bishop Murphy, invited me for pastoral help in the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Providentially, I was assigned to the Church of St. Mary, Manhasset, to work under Fr. Bob Romeo, beginning on September 1, 2015. Initially the term of service was for two years, but due to the magnanimity of the Lord, the Bishops and our Pastor, I have now served for six years plus. I came as a small man to a big place, from the Third World to the First World. I came to the Big Apple, big people, big places, big things. It reminded me of Gulliver’s Travels: he went to the land of giants, where everything was bigger than himself. Then he also went to an island of tech savvy people, who could make their island float and fly! It has been a constant learning experience for me here. You have gone very far! I wondered as I wandered! And I’m so grateful that I was here. But I came not as an African young man to pursue a career, or to pursue the American dream, or to be part of any social cause. I came on a mission. And I was aware that I would have to report “mission accomplished” at the end. And the mission is that of none other than Jesus Christ, his Gospel, his Church. The mission of Jesus, his Gospel and his Church is a big and tough one; so sometimes I spoke big and tough. I came as his priest, prophet and servant. Continuing his priestly, prophetic and servant ministry, I tried to speak His language. You can imagine the tension in this guy struggling between taking in the mysteries of America and speaking up for Christ and His care and concerns. I took a leaf, and a challenge, from three sayings of St. Paul. He says, “I came to you in weakness, in fear and trembling” (1 Cor 2:3). I, too, came to you in weakness, in fear and in trembling. I came utterly aware of my inadequacy and unworthiness. St. Paul also says to his Christians, “When I came to you proclaiming the mystery of God, I did not come with sublimity of words or of wisdom. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified” (1 Cor 2:1-2). I, too, tried to focus on the Lord Jesus, and what He is saying in our day and age, and what He is doing in our day and age. A constant question for me is: Where is Jesus/God in this? Talking to the Christians of Ephesus, St. Paul also says, “I did not at all shrink from telling you what was for your benefit…I did not shrink from proclaiming to you the entire plan of God” (Acts 20:20,27). God’s plan, and what is of benefit, may not always be what people want to hear. Focusing on God’s architectonic plan and what is of benefit to God’s people, I tried to “tell” and to “proclaim.” I may not have always done it well… There is a proverb that when a child is crying and pointing somewhere, something or somebody is there. Sometimes, I have been that child, crying and pointing. Some misunderstood me thinking I was referring to the congregation before me, or the good people of our parish and community, or our state, or our nation. No. It’s about our global village – and our global politics, global society, global economy, global religion, global science and technology, global culture, global control…and where the globe is going. And its implications for Christianity, and especially for Catholics. It’s about the gathering clouds. The response that I always communicate about all that is happening is that of Christ himself. Be aware. Be wary. Be vigilant. Be prayerful. Be not afraid. And the prayer I have always called for is wisdom, grace, strength and courage to navigate the difficult and confusing times, and to remain faithful and trusting through thick and thin.

A Farewell Message from Father Jude (con’t.) I thank God for the blessing and opportunity of my coming to you, being with you, and serving the best that I could. My best is far from the best; I’m utterly aware. I thank their Excellencies Bishop Murphy and Bishop Barres, who asked for me and who employed me in the Diocese, and His Excellency Bishop Ukwuoma, my home Bishop, who sent me. I thank my Pastor, Fr. Bob, under whom I have worked, from whom I have learned many things, and from whom I have received many gifts. I was privileged to witness the growth and development, the increase in the good, the orderly, and the beautiful in the parish and schools of St. Mary’s, under his able administration – in spite of very difficult and challenging circumstances. I thank my fellow Associates, Fr. Chris, Fr. Jiha, Fr. Dominik, Fr. Collins, and our visiting priests; Sr. Teresa, and the ministries I have worked with. It has been wonderful knowing you, working with you, learning from you. I thank all the good people of our parish, and of our diocese, who have been so welcoming and kind to me, and who are resilient in your Christian faith, hope and charity. I thank the Staff of the Parish, and the Faculty, Staff and Students of our Schools. It has been wonderful being with you and working with you and by you. But I think everybody needs to be granted a plenary indulgence for being able to put up with this guy these six years! To all those I offended or riled in any way, I sincerely apologize. Going forward, I would encourage everybody to be an aware person, reading the signs of the times, especially in viewing and discerning where the Lord of History and of Destinies is going and leading versus where the contemporary world and global community is going and leading us to. And now I’m going back to my Diocese, Orlu in Imo State, Nigeria. I have not been assigned or allocated yet. But I will keep in touch. Nigeria is currently in turmoil now, and people are suffering greatly. Kindly keep my country in your prayers. And keep me in your prayers, too, while I keep you in mine. Out of sight will not be out of mind. Best wishes, God’s blessings! Fr. Jude

Reflections on the Creed by Fr. Dominik Wegiel “I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life” After reflections of the Father and the Son, Bishop Barron reflects on the Holy Spirit in the fourth chapter of his book. The first clarification is to state what the Holy Spirit is not. Often, people mispresent the Holy Spirit as like the “force” in Star Wars. Bishop Barron writes, “The Holy Spirit is definitively a ‘who’ rather than a ‘what,’ despite the rather impersonal descriptor” (Barron, 133). Both in the Old and the New Testaments, we read about the Holy Spirit as being the breath and life of God. In Genesis, the Holy Spirit is presented as wind which hovers over the chaos and forms the world. “The earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters” (Genesis 1:2). The Prophet Ezekiel has a vision of a valley of dry bones, where there is no life to be found in the cemetery of the world. Ezekiel hears, “Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live” (Ezekiel 37:4-5). Ezekiel is given a promise that the Spirit will come, like in the beginning, and give new life. Jesus, in the line of Ezekiel, promises to send the Holy Spirit. The Gospel of John states, “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything” (John 14:26). This promise is fulfilled at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit appears as wind and fire. “And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:2-4). Bishop Barron writes, “Those in the upper room were like the dead bones described by Ezekiel, and the Spirit of Jesus stirred them to life, indeed made them a powerful army, ready to go forth” (Barron, 135). The Apostles were hiding because of their fear, but now inflamed by the Holy Spirit, the Apostles go out boldly proclaiming the Resurrection of Jesus. It is often that we are like the vision of Ezekiel. The world is like a valley of dry bones, and we walk like zombies through it. We move from one point to another and perform our duties, but there is little life in us. The Holy Spirit is meant to break through our apathy and monotonous routine. The Spirit awakens our heart, to see reality not like the world, but through the eyes of God.

“Who Proceeds from the Father and the Son” It is important to now bring up the Filioque controversy. This has been a theological issue between Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians for over a thousand years. The original Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed stated that the Holy Spirit proceeded from the Father with no mention of the Son. However, in the Western Church, with deeper reflections on the Scriptures, it is clear that Jesus has a role in the sending forth of the Spirit. St. Paul even refers to the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of Christ. He writes, “The Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him” (Romans 8:9). Even in John’s Gospel, it states, “I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth” (John 15:26). The Third Council of Toledo in 589 added the Latin word filioque (and from the Son) to the Nicene Creed. When King Charlemagne came into power in the year 800, he had the filioque professed in the Western Liturgies. This tweak upset the Eastern Church because for them neither the local council of Toledo nor a secular King had the authority to change the ecumenical NiceneConstantinople Creed. For the Orthodox Church, the addition of the Son seems to compromise the primacy of the Father within the Trinitarian Life. Eastern

Church of Saint Mary | 10

Reflections on the Creed (con’t.) theologians would speak of the Spirit coming from the Father through the Son. However Bishop Barron defends the filioque, “The Eastern concerns about denigrating the primacy of the Father, Thomas Aquinas argued, are unfounded, in the measure that whatever the Son has, including his capacity to co-spirate the Spirit, came forth in procession from the Father” (Barron, 141). ). The theological debate is complex, but overall, Bishop Barron argues that the controversy is not an issue at all, but rather a difference of language which communicates the same truth. Bishop Barron writes, “Everything the West means by filioque is implied in the ‘through the Son’ favored by the East… Both the Orthodox and Catholic traditions believe in the unity of God, the co-equality of the Trinitarian persons, and the unoriginated primacy of the Father” (Barron, 141). Since Pope John Paul II, the relations between Catholics and Orthodox Christians have greatly improved.

“Who has spoken through the Prophets” The Creed states a special relationship between the Holy Spirit and the Prophets. The Old Testament contains a rich prophetic tradition which reveals God’s word, judgment and call for repentance. When we read about Isaiah, Jeremiah, Elijah and John the Baptist, they all seem to be strange and even eccentric people. This is because they are radically different from the world. Bishop Barron quotes Chesterton, “The fool for Christ stands on his head and hence sees everything as upside down. But since this inversion of vision takes place in a world already upside down due to the effects of sin, Christ’s fool actually sees things aright” (Barron, 146). The prophet is in the world, but not of the world. The prophet is seized by a greater power and is transformed. As the famous American author, Flannery O’Connor, said, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you odd.” Bishop Barron writes, “The prophet is someone who feels the feelings of God and then speaks out of that experience” (Barron, 146). The prophet can channel God’s anger, delight, sorrow, and peace, because the prophet is in right harmony with God. As baptized Christians, we too are also prophets. All of us have a prophetic role because we have all received the Holy Spirit. We received the Holy Spirit in Baptism and Confirmation. The breath of God which gave life in the beginning of time has given us renewal. We are not dry bones walking through a valley of tombs. We are prophets filled with God’s love and are called to raise our voices to evangelize and spread God’s word that all may have life in Jesus Christ. Ed. The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time | January 23, 2022

Parish Social Ministry Pope Francis’ Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel) stated very clearly, there is an inseparable bond between our faith and the poor. He asked that we hear the cry of the poor and never abandon them. Please keep this in the front of your mind and consider donating the following to the food pantry this week:

Sugar Ketchup Mayonnaise

Mustard Juices

Donations may be left in the donation box located in the south lobby of the Church or brought to the Parish Social Ministry office located on the ground floor level of the convent facing the east side of the church. Thank you for your generosity and support!

Society of St. Vincent de Paul In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus reads the words of scripture: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor.” Last summer, parishes across Long Island collected over 200 communion dresses and over 80 suits/separates for families in need. We are thrilled to announce that we are in the final stage of our Communion Closet initiative –

The SVDPLI 2022 Communion Closet Distribution Event St. Vincent De Paul in Bethpage will be offering families in need the opportunity to select one of these beautiful dresses and suits/separates during the February vacation week (February 22nd – February 26th) for their child’s upcoming First Holy Communion. Sizes are not guaranteed but are available on a first come, first served basis. Appointments are necessary. We truly believe that this special event is representative of what’s unique about our Vincentian ministry…spirituality, friendship and service…as we distribute clothes in a warm and welcoming environment to families preparing for an important sacrament. Please feel free to reach out to Monique Love with any questions you may have at mlove@svdpli.org or via phone at (516) 822-3132. If you or someone you know needs assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385 ext. 1125 or SVDP@stmary.ws. Rosary Society Our Mission Statement: The Rosary Society fosters devotion to Mary through prayer and good works for causes that would be dear to her heart Invest 20 minutes of your day to pray the Rosary, and see the difference it will make in your life. If you would like the Rosarians to pray for a special intention, please e-mail us at rosarysociety@stmary.ws. FIVE REASONS TO PRAY THE ROSARY This week: # 3. The Rosary is easy to learn, but it will take a lifetime to master its riches. While children can learn the prayers of the Rosary, the deepest mystics and greatest saints recommend the graces that can be gained through it. St. Francis de Sales said, “Let us run to Mary, and, as her little children, cast ourselves into her arms with a perfect confidence.” Fifteen promises (the theme of the 2022 St. Mary’s Parish Calendar) are connected to the Rosary, via St. Dominic and Blessed Alan de la Roche - Living Faith, 2021

Learn to Pray the Rosary! SAVE THE DATE!

Rosary 101 Thursday, February 10th, at 7:00 PM in the Marian Room. ALL PARISHIONERS, INCLUDING FAMILIES AND CHILDREN, are invited to join us as the history of Our Lady’s Rosary is explored, and its prayers and mysteries explained. Light refreshments will be served during this brief presentation.

INTERESTED IN BECOMING A ROSARIAN? New members will be inducted in April. The opportunity to learn more about who Rosarians are, and what we do, will be part of our New Members Breakfast in early March. For questions, please contact us by email at: rosarysociety@stmary.ws.

Religious Education Thank you to Grade 7-8 students who attended my presentation “How God Speaks to Us Today.” Together, we contemplated on the way we hear God’s voice through the inspired Word of Scripture, the holy Church and through our Christian walk with each other. We talked about the importance of quiet prayer, and the beautiful reality that we never pray alone where the Holy Trinity indwells. Every beloved person of God prays together with the Church as members of the Body of Christ. When we read the Gospel, Christ is speaking to us - and we are talking to Him. However, our eyes must be open, and our ears attentive to hear his voice. This is essential if we are to hear God, or take the chance in our hurriedness not to even notice God - who is right there, with us and in us - always. A special thank you to Grade 8 Catechist Mrs. Jervis for her wonderful support. Blessings, Mrs. Granieri

In Session with Dr. Patricia Pitta Making Sense for Our Children in Unstable Times: Through Modeling Mental, Physical and Spiritual Health The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe. (Proverbs 18:10) Happy New Year to all and we pray for a safe, protected and blessed New Year. We are all living in challenging times. Some would call it much more than challenging. There are so many uncertainties in our world. When I think about uncertainties, the first thought is safety and protection. As parents, our thoughts, hearts and actions are focused on our children that we brought into this world. We want to protect our children from physical and mental harm. We want to provide a secure financial foundation that will provide for their basic needs. We want to provide them with the development of inner strength that will accompany them throughout life, and even when they are not with us. We want to impart the strength within that comes from a relationship with God integrated with a healthy home life where parents can handle the stresses presented in a manner that is not overwhelming to parental functioning. When parents can join in unity and direction, their children will follow. If children face tension, anxiety, and discord within their home, their lives will become a reaction to that environment. They will either copy the coping skills of their parents or take a totally different direction. If

their model is not a healthy one, the child’s adaptation can become fraught with anxiety and sadness and expressed in depression, being overwhelmed, panic attacks and many physical ailments.

Showing your children that you have a situation that needs medical or emotional assistance and showing them how to take the steps to heal are important lessons in building inner strength and resilience.

The question is that in these everchanging times when our world is consumed with so much upheaval, fear, and change: How can we model for our children a secure base? One of the gifts I received as quite a young child was that of inner strength. I envisioned a rod of God’s love residing in my inner spine. I really do not know where I learned about this image, but when I think of God’s love, that is where it resides in my body. As I envision this image, I go further and think about God’s love embracing my stomach, gut, and whole being. You have probably heard the saying “the gut is the second brain.”

If your children have fears or concerns, please listen to them. You then create a safe environment where frightening thoughts can be expressed and explored and where understanding and solutions can be created.

So, as parents, how do we model a healthy adaptation in this everchanging world? First, you need to take care of yourself. You need to address your physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Your children will copy your example. Feed them well and protect their health, teach them how to manage stress through your example, and teach them about the love of God by sharing the WORD with them daily. Say a prayer before meals. I know many of us do that at a holiday, but not with daily provisions. Why not? We forget or take it for granted that the gift of God’s love is in every act we do and everything we possess. If you are having trouble with your physical or mental health, get the assistance that is needed to figure out what is going on within you and take the necessary steps to heal.

As you demonstrate having meaning and purpose to your life, your children will learn to value these concepts and apply them to their lives. You can do this by setting realistic goals together about what they would like to accomplish daily and in future days. It is fun to imagine together and set small realistic goals. Important in these interactions is the inclusion of the Lord’s help with everything we do. A small statement like, “Thank God for your help.” creates a homemade holiness in your actions and thoughts and a reminder to have fun together as a couple and a family.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Prayer Before the Eucharist My Lord Jesus Christ,

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Church

I believe that You are really here in this Sacrament. Night and day You remain here compassionate and loving. You call, You wait for, You welcome everyone who comes to visit You. I thank You, Jesus my Divine Redeemer for coming upon the earth for our sake and for instituting the Adorable Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist in order to remain with us until the end of the world. I thank You for hiding beneath the Eucharistic species Your infinite majesty and beauty, which Your Angels delight to behold, so that I might have courage to approach the throne of Your mercy. I thank You dear Jesus, for having become the priceless Victim, to merit for me the fullness of heavenly favors. Awaken in me such confidence in You that their fullness may descend ever more fruitfully upon my soul. I thank You for offering Yourself in thanksgiving to God for all His benefits, spiritual and temporal which He has bestowed on me. Grant me grace and perseverance in your faithful service. Amen.
