RE: Death of Pope Benedict XVI
FROM: Most Reverend John O. Barres, Bishop, Diocese of Rockville Centre
This morning, upon hearing of the death of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, we give thanks to God with Our Holy Father Pope Francis for the leadership of a great theologian and pope whose holiness and missionary spirit impacted immensely the 20th and 21st centuries.
Growing up in Nazi Germany and experiencing firsthand the bitter fruits of Nazi ideology, Pope Benedict XVI understood that ideas have consequences in history.
As a result, throughout his life, as a priest, professor, bishop, cardinal and pope, he championed the Catholic belief in the harmony of Faith and Reason – a principle that is so critical to the unity of Truth and so vital to Catholic identity, missionary activity, harmonious ecumenical and interreligious charity and peace in the world.
The magnitude of the historical influence and significance of Pope Benedict’s systematic, liturgical and biblical theology cannot be completely known in the present. But it will be great, and it will grow over time like the influence of the teachings of St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. John Henry Cardinal Newman.
For example, Pope Benedict XVI’s biblical theology and spirituality , so beautifully expressed in the three volumes of Jesus of Nazareth , his apostolic exhortation Verbum Domini and his call to all Catholics to read, study, meditate, pray, contemplate and live the inspired Sacred Scriptures are already key dimensions of the New Evangelization.
Echoing his predecessor, Pope Saint John Paul II, Pope Benedict encouraged a new and more integrated maturity in biblical scholarship – a “comprehensive exegesis” rather than exclusive use of one method alone ( Fides et Ratio 55 and the Foreword to Jesus of Nazareth I). The result is a ferment in biblical scholarship and its application in the pastoral sphere that continues to gain ground and momentum.
Pope Benedict called us to a “sacramental mysticism” that is “social in character” and agape driven (Deus Caritas Est 14). Harnessing the power of the Mass, harnessing this “sacramental mysticism,” leads the Church to a dynamic Gospel of Life and Social Justice mission in our globalized society.
In his weekly audiences, Pope Benedict XVI engaged in a “catechesis of prayer” in which he explained how authentic spiritual life and spiritual growth have to be founded on the rock of the objective truths of the Catholic faith – the truths of the Creed, the Sacraments, Moral Teaching and Prayer.
During his pontificate, Pope Benedict XVI invited the universal Church to live three special years: a Year of St. Paul (2008), a Year for Priests (2009), and a Year of Faith (2012).
During the Year of St. Paul, he asked every Catholic to rediscover Paul’s letters, Paul’s Road to Damascus Conversion and his missionary spirit.
During the Year for Priests, Pope Benedict XVI invited priests to deep conversion, deep holiness, deep mission and a devotion to the Patron of all Priests, St. John Vianney, the Cure of Ars.
In this time, as always, the Holy Father echoed the words of the First Letter of Peter in his life and relationship with priests : “I exhort the presbyters among you, as a fellow presbyter and witness to the sufferings of Christ and one who has a share in the glory to be revealed. Tend the flock in your midst…” And h e asked all of us to pray and sacrifice for a new harvest of holy and zealous 21st century priests.
Finally, during the Year of Faith, Pope Benedict XVI asked us to open our minds, hearts and souls to an expansion of the gift of faith in the Digital Age.
Today, we pray for the soul of this great pope and give thanks for how the Holy Spirit led him and inspired us.

Benedict XVI: Exploring his nearly 8 years on the See of Peter
By Veronica Scarisbrick
As the late Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI lies in state in St. Peter’s Basilica, we take a look back over the nearly 8 years of his papacy, starting with the choice of his pontifical name through to his shock resignation. It was the afternoon of April 19, 2005 when white smoke billowed out of the Sistine Chapel chimney to announce the election of a new Pope. Moments later the bells of St. Peter’s pealed loudly in celebration. And the people of Rome heard and flocked to the square in great numbers only just in time to hear the customary announcement ‘We have a new pope’, in Latin. When they heard the name, Joseph and then Ratzinger, they cheered. They immediately recognized a prominent and familiar figure in the Catholic Church. After all, he had been one of the late John Paul II’s closest advisors for over two decades. And when the new Successor of Peter appeared at the central balcony of the Basilica in his white cassock, following in the footsteps of his predecessor who had broken new ground in this respect, he addressed the crowds: “After the great Pope John Paul II”, he said, the Cardinals have elected me, a simple and humble laborer in the vineyard of the Lord.”
Pursuit of peace
But the real surprise came when he announced he would take the name “Benedict.” The last Successor of Peter to take that name had been elected in 1914. Austrian Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, one of the Cardinals to elect him explains: “It was evidently a signal… he drew inspiration from Benedict XV, a pope who pursued peace at a time of war, and from a monk, Saint Benedict, patron Saint of Europe.”
Expert theologian
Who exactly was this German-born Pope? He was born at Marktl am Inn, a small town of Upper Bavaria on the Austrian border on April 16, 1927. His university years had been taken up with philosophical and theological studies from 1946 to 1951, and ended with a doctoral dissertation centred around the notion of the people of God in Saint Augustine and a postdoctoral work on Saint Bonaventure, a Franciscan theologian from the thirteenth century. His theological qualifications led to a teaching position at the University of Bonn, until he was called to Rome in 1962 to attend the Second Vatican Council as an expert. When the Council ended in 1965, he went back to Germany, once again to teach, this time at the University of Tübingen. Then, in 1977, Pope Paul VI appointed him Archbishop of Munich. Later, in 1981, Pope John Paul II appointed him as Prefect of the then-Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), a position he held for over two decades until his election to the papacy.
Familiar figure in the Vatican
It was during these latter years as Prefect of the CDF that he became a familiar figure in Vatican circles, in a special way at Vatican Radio, where he crossed the threshold many times. The future Benedict XVI joined us in our studios first as cardinal to offer us a self-portrait, saying: “All I can say is I come from a very simple and humble family, and I don’t really feel like a cardinal. In Germany I lived in a small town...and there I feel at home.” And then later, as Pope, when less than a year into his pontificate he was back at his radio station once again. It was March 3, 2006, and this time his words were of encouragement: “To help build this great family that knows no frontiers, in which we are all brothers and sisters in the multiplicity of cultures and languages and thus constitute a peace-making force.”
Gifted with words
Certainly, if one had to identify the legacy of Benedict XVI, his extraordinary ability with words both in print and in the spoken form would come to mind. Starting from his homily during Holy Mass to mark the beginning of his Petrine Ministry, on April 24, 2005:
“The Pastor must be inspired by Christ’s holy zeal: for him it is not a matter of indifference that so many people are living in a desert. And there are so many kinds of deserts. There is the desert of poverty, the desert of hunger and thirst, of abandonment, of loneliness, of destroyed love… The Church and all her pastors, like Christ, must set out to lead people out of the desert.”
Then beyond his moving homilies, there were his addresses during the weekly General Audiences and the many speeches he delivered in the public square on Apostolic Journeys. Those to English-speaking countries stand out: the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
And in the written word there were many documents and three encyclicals: Deus Caritas Est (God is Love) in 2005; Spe Salvi (Saved in Hope) in 2007; Caritas in Veritate (Charity in Truth) in 2009; and also publications, to quote but one: the well-known Jesus of Nazareth trilogy.
Shock resignation
The gesture that most astonished the world was Benedict XVI’s resignation. It took place on February 28, 2013, and left the world in shock. No Roman Pontiff had done this for almost six centuries. Since that day he became known as Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. And in the twilight years of his life, he retired within the Vatican walls, continuing to write, and leading a quiet life of prayer and meditation, until his death on December 31, 2022.

The Spiritual Testament of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
The Holy See released the Spiritual Testament of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, dated August 29, 2006.
My spiritual testament
When, at this late hour of my life, I look back on the decades I have wandered through, I see first of all how much reason I have to give thanks. Above all, I thank God Himself, the giver of all good gifts, who has given me life and guided me through all kinds of confusion; who has always picked me up when I began to slip, who has always given me anew the light of his countenance. In retrospect, I see and understand that even the dark and arduous stretches of this path were for my salvation and that He guided me well in those very stretches.
I thank my parents, who gave me life in difficult times and prepared a wonderful home for me with their love, which shines through all my days as a bright light until today. My father’s clear-sighted faith taught us brothers and sisters to believe and stood firm as a guide in the midst of all my scientific knowledge; my mother’s heartfelt piety and great kindness remain a legacy for which I cannot thank her enough. My sister has served me selflessly and full of kind concern for decades; my
brother has always paved the way for me with the clear-sightedness of his judgements, with his powerful determination, and with the cheerfulness of his heart; without this ever-new going ahead and going along, I would not have been able to find the right path.
I thank God from the bottom of my heart for the many friends, men and women, whom He has always placed at my side; for the co-workers at all stages of my path; for the teachers and students He has given me. I gratefully entrust them all to His goodness. And I would like to thank the Lord for my beautiful home in the Bavarian foothills of the Alps, in which I was able to see the splendour of the Creator Himself shining through time and again. I thank the people of my homeland for allowing me to experience the beauty of faith time and again. I pray that our country will remain a country of faith and I ask you, dear compatriots, not to let your faith be distracted. Finally, I thank God for all the beauty I was able to experience during the various stages of my journey, but especially in Rome and in Italy, which has become my second home.
I ask for forgiveness from the bottom of my heart from all those whom I have wronged in some way.
What I said earlier of my compatriots, I now say to all who were entrusted to my service in the Church: Stand firm in the faith! Do not be confused! Often it seems as if science - on the one hand, the natural sciences; on the other, historical research (especially the exegesis of the Holy Scriptures) - has irrefutable insights to offer that are contrary to the Catholic faith. I have witnessed from times long past the changes in natural science and have seen how apparent certainties against the faith vanished, proving themselves not to be science but
philosophical interpretations only apparently belonging to sciencejust as, moreover, it is in dialogue with the natural sciences that faith has learned to understand the limits of the scope of its affirmations and thus its own specificity. For 60 years now, I have accompanied the path of theology, especially biblical studies, and have seen seemingly unshakeable theses collapse with the changing generations, which turned out to be mere hypotheses: the liberal generation (Harnack, Jülicher, etc.), the existentialist generation (Bultmann, etc.), the Marxist generation. I have seen, and see, how, out of the tangle of hypotheses, the reasonableness of faith has emerged and is emerging anew. Jesus Christ is truly the Way, the Truth, and the Life - and the Church, in all her shortcomings, is truly His Body.
Finally, I humbly ask: pray for me, so that the Lord may admit me to the eternal dwellings, despite all my sins and shortcomings. For all those entrusted to me, my heartfelt prayer goes out day after day.
Benedictus PP XVI.
Prayer for Pope Benedict XVI
Almighty ever-living God, who made Pope Benedict XVI a wise teacher of your people, a gentle shepherd of your flock, and a faithful pastor of your Church, grant in your kindness that your humble servant, who in this life believed in you and loved you, may now receive your mercy and rejoice in your presence for ever in the glory of the Saints.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lamenting Suffering in the Light of Christ
January 21, 2023 at 10:00 AM in the Ministry Center
Presenter: Mrs. Marie Granieri
Human suffering comes in a multitude of forms that can be expressed visibly or stay concealed beneath the surface of what the eye can see. In his Apostolic letter, On the Christian Meaning of Human Suffering (Salvifici Dorloris), Pope Saint John Paul II states that “Suffering, like all human things, finds its true meaning in Jesus Christ. And when tethered to the anchor of God’s love, we discover the redemptive meaning of every form of human suffering.”
Drawing from the teaching of Pope Saint John Paul II, the presentation will share insights on:
The quest for an answer to the question of the meaning of suffering. How does human suffering permeate the salvific beauty of Christ in daily life? How can we entrust suffering to God through lament as a spiritual practice?
Uniting one’s suffering to Christ does not come easily. Every personal experience of suffering raises the great question of “why.” But Christ answers this question from the cross, saying “Take up your cross and follow me.” In this way, Mrs. Granieri will share how the salvific meaning of suffering is revealed.
Mrs. Granieri holds multiple degrees including a Masters in Sacred Theology.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Today we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany, where the Magi find the newborn king and offer him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. In the spirit of the Magi, please put your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box so that comfort and peace can once again be given to a newborn child.
Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

St. Mary’s Families Bring Christmas Dinner to Local Families in Need
The Parish Social Ministry office is so thankful to the Karcic and Fleck families for their unbelievably generous and caring effort to supply Christmas meals to many of the families we serve out of the Parish Social Ministry office.
The Karcic’s and the Fleck’s, both active in the St. Mary’s community, have raised over $40,000 in the past 3 years to provide over 130 meals to local families. These meals, averaging $400 per family, consisted of everything a family would need to put together a celebratory dinner for one of the holiest days of the year. The effort was obviously successful but was also unique in the sense that it encouraged many families in the community to gather and truly celebrate the blessed gift of giving to those in need.
Over 40 families met at the grocery stores (kids jumped in to help as well), shopped together, and then spent the evening before Christmas Eve delivering their feast supplies to local families in need. The families they provided food and supplies to were so appreciative and were happy to welcome these donors into their homes for what was an undeniably joyous and kind effort.
One family provided for said, “This year has been difficult for my son and I but, knowing we have your support of people like you certainly helps. Please know, we will never forget your kind and generous gesture. Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts. May God continue to bless your efforts.” Another stated, “I can’t begin to express what your gift means to me and my son. The delivery of the groceries, the time and energy behind the scenes is greatly appreciated and will go to extreme good use. Being a single mother is a burden but your actions have really lighten the load. For that, again thank you!!!”
In addition to this celebratory giving event, the group used the last of the funds to donate non-perishable food items and grocery store gift cards to the Parish Social Ministry Office. Their efforts will continue to help those struggling to put food on the table far into 2023.
The Parish Social Ministry office is extending our sincerest thank you to all of the families who participated in this event and to the Karcic’s and the Fleck’s for organizing this generous and impactful effort!

Religious Education Happy New Year!
Reflecting on Pope Benedict’s life of devotion to Christ, I recall this most beautiful teaching in his book, Pilgrim Fellowship of Faith – the Church as Communion. He states, “Our task as Christians is clear. It is both simple and very great. It is a matter of witnessing to God, of opening up the darkened windows so that his light may shine among us. That there may be room for his presence, for it is true that where God is – there is heaven there – even in the tribulations of our daily living, life becomes bright. The Christian faith is being touched by God and witnessing to Him.”
As we begin 2023 together, let us increase the number of places ready to more deeply receive God’s presence. Leaving the world, Pope Benedict’s words give us the most beautiful expression to offer the Lord when He comes. “Jesus I love you” is a profoundly beautiful way to begin the New Year and every day thereafter.
We look forward to resuming classes with our students, families and Catechists.
May the Blessed Mother of God keep us near her Son, Mrs. Granieri

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
Prayer of Adoration
I adore you, O Jesus, God of love, truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I adore you who has come to your own but were not received by them.
I adore you, whom the majority of mankind rejected and despised.
I adore you, whom the impious incessantly offend by their sacrileges and blasphemies.
I adore you, who are grieved by the coldness and indifference of a vast number of Christians.
I adore you, O Infinite Goodness, who has wrought so many miracles, in order to reveal your love to us.
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays
3:00 - 5:00 PM
I adore you, with all the angels and saints, and with those chosen souls that are now already the blessed of your Father and are all aglow with burning love for you.
I adore you with all your friends, O Jesus!
With them I prostrate myself at the foot of the Altar, to offer you my most profound homage, to receive your Divine Inspiration, and to implore your grace.
Oh, how good it is for me to be here with you!
How sweet to hear the voice of my beloved!
O victim of divine love! A piercing cry breaks forth from your heart here on the altar, as it once did on Calvary; it is the cry of love; “I thirst,” you call to your children, “I thirst for your love! Come all, whom I love as my Father has loved me; come and quench the thirst that consumes me!
Lord Jesus, behold I come. My heart is small, but it is all yours.
You are a prisoner in our tabernacles, you the Lord of Lords!
And love it is, that holds you here as such!
You leave the tabernacle only to come to us, to unite yourself with the faithful soul and allow your divine love to reign within.
O King of love! Come, live and reign in me. I want no other law but the law of your love!
No, no, I henceforth desire to know nothing, neither of this world nor of what is in it, nor of myself; your love alone shall rule in me eternally.
O Jesus, grant me this grace! Break all my fetters, strip me of all that is not of yourself, in order that your love may be my life here below, and my happiness and delight in eternity, Amen.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word Sundays at the 9:00 AM Mass
What Is It? After the Opening Prayer, children gather and are dismissed from the church with a blessing by the priest, proceed to the chapel for the Sunday Readings and a short reflection on the Gospel, all on a level that children can understand. They are returned to the church at the beginning of the Creed.
Get Involved! We are in need of a few more people who would like to break open the Gospel reading for the children. Please consider sitting in on Sunday to see what it’s about and/or email Jane at bulletin@stmary.ws. The Epiphany of the Lord | January 8, 2023
