From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,
“And who is my neighbor?” (Luke 10:29) The Parable of the Good Samaritan is a heartwarming story that has taught Christians throughout the centuries the meaning of concern for a stranger. If we could go to the time of Jesus and enter the mindset of His listeners, we would come away with a very different and radical understanding. After answering what the greatest of the commandments is (to love God and your neighbor as yourself ), the Lawyer asks, “Who is my neighbor?” Here is the crux of the parable. Jesus presents four characters: the wounded person, a priest of the Temple, a Levite, and a Samaritan. The significance of the priest is self-explanatory and relates also to the Levite. The tribe of Levi was set aside by God to perform certain rituals and responsibilities in the Temple. Moses and Aaron were of the Tribe of Levi, so we can see that Levites were held in high esteem. The wounded man was headed to Jericho on his way from Jerusalem. So we assume that he had gone to the Temple to worship, which would put him in the category of an observant and faithful Jew. The first two “Good Religious People” pass him by and ignore his plight. A Samaritan sees what has happened and goes out of his way at his own expense, generous as it was, puts aside his own needs, and assists the wounded man. As a story, it surely teaches a lesson of generosity. But to the listeners of Jesus, it was radical and went against the popular mindset of the time. The Samaritans were a hated people. They claimed a lineage from Eleazar, son of Joseph, and worshiped God on Mount Gerizim, not in Jerusalem. This dispute caused a very deep and abiding animosity between the two groups. When Jesus used a Samaritan to represent the “good person,” He caused deep anger and resentment among those who heard His message. The ones they were taught to hate were now represented as closest to the Kingdom of God. Can you imagine how angry the listeners were with Jesus? He has not only taught what true charity is, but also challenged the preconceived notions of a people. So what does it teach us? Well, certainly the call of each of us to never walk away from a person in need, but it also takes us to a deeper level that may challenge our views of people we encounter. I hear very often that we should care first for people in our own nation. While we do have an obligation to help those closest to us, we also need a vision that goes beyond our borders to one that becomes more global. We have a number of groups that come to our parish to make an appeal for the many needs of the world. This, I believe, helps us to go beyond our smaller view and embrace something larger, as Jesus has taught us. But just as the parable invited Jesus’ listeners to something deeper, the beauty of it is that it can do the same for us today. So which groups do we, as “Good Religious People” of our time, perhaps look on with disdain? Who are those we might refuse to help or become angry at when a need is presented because of OUR preconceived images? Who do we define as our neighbor? I propose some groups and ask you to ponder and pray about what would be your first response to helping these people: the homeless on the streets of Manhattan, undocumented immigrants and day laborers, people from Muslim countries where some terrorists have made their home base, persons with AIDS, or any appeal for financial assistance that is presented to us. Maybe there are other groups that we may find hard to be generous towards…think about them. I am sure most of these groups are ones that we can find many justifications to close our hearts to. The popular mindset can, at times, cloud our vision when it comes to certain groupings of people and make it hard to look beyond that. NOW approach it again in light of the words of Jesus. What do you have to do or what mindset needs to be adapted so that you “are not far from the Kingdom of God?” These are not easy tasks because often cultural understandings are based on emotions that are so deeply ingrained, that any challenge to them can shake us to our very foundation. BUT the way of Jesus, as Isaiah the prophet says today, “is not beyond your strength or beyond your reach.” The first step is to ask the question and then relate it to the gently challenging words of Jesus. The Gospels are not supposed to be a burden to us...BUT they are meant to challenge us and bring us closer to the Kingdom of God. Where is God calling you in the power of Jesus’ name? What mindsets cloud your vision? Ask Jesus to enter your heart. He wants you to be an inheritor of what loving people enjoy. Church of Saint Mary | 4
From the Pastor’s Desk As many of you know, the principal of our Elementary School, Sarah Griffin (de Venoge), is pregnant with her second child. After much prayer, Mrs. Griffin has decided she wants to be a full time mom. As sad as we are to lose her, we wish her much blessing. Mrs. Griffin has served the school as a teacher, assistant principal, and for the last four years as principal. She has brought with her great joy, enthusiasm and certainly an extensive knowledge of academics. Her vision and deep faith has brought the school to a wonderful place in our history. Thank you, Sarah, and God’s blessings always. As we enter the summer season, I remind you of the obligation and need to continue to keep attendance at Mass a priority. If you are going on vacation, why not visit www.masstimes.org first and find a nearby Catholic Church? In Jesus, Fr. Bob
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Sanctity of Life My God, we adore You here in the Blessed Sacrament. As we kneel before You, we recognize You as the Creator of all Life. We thank You and praise You for the lives you have given to us and to those we love. Give us a true and lasting respect for all life, for we recognize it as coming from You. We pray for all who have suffered or died as a result of disrespect whether that suffering and death has come as a result of abuse, war, gossip, or abortion. We pray for an end for all disrespect of life. As we kneel before You we ask You to forgive all those who do not respect the sanctity of life. We repeat the words you spoke as you hung on the cross, ‘Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.’
Stay with us
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays
3:00 - 5:00 PM
Stay with us today, and stay from now on, every day, according to the desire of my heart, which accepts the appeal of so many hearts from various parts, sometimes far away. Stay that we may meet You in prayers of adoration and thanksgiving, in prayers of expiation and petition to which all those who visit this basilica are invited. May the unworthy successor of Peter and all those who take part in the adoration of Your Eucharistic Presence attest with every visit and make ring out again the truth contained in the Apostle’s words: ‘Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.’ Amen.

New Bereavement Group Seeks Volunteer Facilitators The Parish Social Ministry Office is looking for two volunteers who may feel God’s call to facilitate a Bereavement Group for the parish. Volunteers would be properly trained over a couple of weeks starting in September by Dr. Lou Sabatini. Those being trained would attend a one hour training session and then attend an hour actual bereavement session following the training. Once volunteers are trained, we will hold a bereavement session at St. Mary’s for those who suffer from loneliness and sadness after the loss of their lovedones. Our bereavement session (running eight weeks, one hour and fifteen minutes per week) could be on any day of the week that works for the facilitators. The facilitators could share the responsibility of the sessions so the time commitment could be a little less. The volunteers do not necessarily have to be people who have suffered the loss of someone close to them, but do have to be individuals who would be able to empathize with those who have. If anyone is interested in volunteering to facilitate this very important session allowing us to build this critical ministry, especially post-COVID, please reach out to Kathleen Kosciusko at kkosciusko@stmary.ws or at 516-365-2705.
Parish Social Ministry Reaches Out to the Elderly and Homebound The Elderly and Homebound Ministry provides a social connection between the parish and the one in need. Society of St. Vincent de Paul In today’s Gospel, when Jesus asks “which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?” the scholar of the law answered, “the one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus then said, “Go and do likewise.” This week you can also “treat the poor with mercy” by putting a gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box. Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws.
